Welcome... The hot topic in the local area is local schooling and the future of Rydon Community College. Following the march by Rydon staff and the drop in session at Sullington Parish Hall on 8th July we look at the facts behind the debate, see page 41 and please get in touch with your views. It’s the Chichester International Film Festival this month, 13th - 30th August, and we have an article on this prestigious event’s founder Roger Gibson on page 28. You can also win tickets to see the new Disney film “Inside Out” on page 31. To find out about other local events from fetes to psychic evenings, our packed What’s On guide starts on page 4. “In In Your Garden” page 35 has ideas for garden planning as well as some important jobs to do outside this month. As usual we’ve a delicious recipe - see page 26 and our prize crossword on page 24. 24 Apologies for the problems with last month’s down clues - the gremlins got into our production process! The correct clues are on the ’news’ page of our website. Thank you to everyone who got in touch, it’s good to know there is so much interest! Enjoy August

30 Local People Roger Gibson founded the Chichester Cinema at New Park in the 1980’s, setting up the Chichester International Film Festival the following decade, the festival now in its 24th year. Why does Roger have such an interest in film? ‘I love all the arts but especially film, jazz and classical music,’ he says, a natural extension of his artistic prowess taking place when he was an art teacher at Chichester College. Forming the Chichester College Adult Education Film Society, he discovered many like-minded people who wanted a more permanent cinema with more choice from all over the world, Roger obliging. The society, as it was then, moved to the city’s New Park Centre in 1986, becoming the Chichester Cinema at New Park, the sole cinema within the city for decades until the advent of Cineworld in 2003. Roger, an Art Graduate of the Royal Academy Schools, London, taught life drawing in London before founding a film society at the Working Men’s College then moved to Chichester as a practising painter and teacher of design at Chichester High School for Boys. Forming the Art of Film at the Chichester College of Further Education, the aim was to encourage critical appreciation of the film as an art form. ‘Jo, my wife, was roped in to help and one of my students, now a projectionist in London, was the New Park Cinema’s main projectionist from an early age. He’s now one of the few people left who know how to run a 35 mm film. Digital has taken over but we’re still one of a handful of cinemas able to operate both thanks to our long-term projection staff headed by Mark.’ Roger insists running a 35 mm film is an art form in itself; ‘Two reels pass a roll of celluloid in front of a ray of light at 24 frames per second, creating the 'classic' cinema look.’ In 1990 – in the fifth year of Chichester Cinema at New Park - Roger received an award from the British Federation of Film Societies, the organisation chosen from over 300 national societies, the plaque hanging up on the cinema wall for years. But he is keen to emphasise that now ‘the cinema has been a fully-fledged commercial, aka, an art house enterprise for many decades.’ He would like too to dispel the myth that the cinema is a club. ‘It was one, well, sort of, when we started out but we have been a business for thirty years, hard for some to appreciate the difference as the British love a club!’ But the cinema has a strong membership, some 1,000 signing up for discounted seats and posted programming, some five seasons a year programmed, over 300 films chosen for inclusion. The cinema, run by Walter Franciso, general manager, Henry Beltran, box office manager, three assistants and three projectionists, also offers an education programme, talks and visits by filmmakers. Roger says: ‘We’re slightly unusual as a cinema in that seating is reserved in the main auditorium and we don’t sell popcorn. But you can buy a drink in the bar and bring it in!’
Roger has received Ralph Fiennes in a Civic Award for Two Women, closing Gala Film. his services to the Photo courtesy of community and an Producer Center Horosho Honorary MA Production from University Co Ltd C o l l e g e , Chichester (now Chichester University) and was winner of the Observer Awards’ Biggest Contributor to the Arts in the Community in 2010. He is on the road four times a year to major festivals – Berlin in February, Cannes in May, Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic in July and Toronto in September – seeking out a varied programme. As artistic consultant to the cinema – he was its director until recently – he now contributes all the performance screenings, live opera, theatre, concerts, ballet, as well as special events such as directors’ visits. He also goes to the London Film Festival in November to see previews and other available films. The Chichester International Film Festival has embraced countless movies over its 24 years. From its early days – twelve years ago it boasted 50 films programming is aimed at punters, not the film trade. Every year he manages a formidable one-man tightrope walk trick to amass global riches including Premieres, Previews, New Releases, Docu mentaries, Retrospectives, organising directors’ Q &As plus a wide

Rydon’s Netball Coaching Day On Friday 26th June, Rydon Community College had Mikki Austin a Surrey Storm SuperLeague Netball player come in and coach a large group of girls for the day. The day was aimed to encourage and motivate girls to take part in Netball. Selected pupils from Year 6 were chosen to develop their basic netball skills to enable them to compete and to develop their skills further in the next academic year. The girls embraced the day and learnt a lot of new concepts and skills. Kate Armstrong, year 6 said “It was absolutely fantastic to meet and be taught by a famous netballer. I found out a lot of new skills. Overall it was great.” The year 7 and 8 Netball teams were chosen to take part in a Gifted and Talented session with Mikki to take their skills and tactics to the next level. Mikki, worked on their movement, team work and their understanding of how one player can affect the whole game in a positive
manner. Ally Holway, year 8 said “It was an amazing day to remember, I learnt a lot of new skills I didn’t know before. Fantastic!! Thank you Mikki.” Mikki’s message was very clear, Netball players do not stop moving; there is also a clear difference between someone who has good Netball skills and someone who also has a Netball brain. Everything Mikki explained and got the pupils to do, made sense and was explained in the concept of the game to help develop their Netball brain. The pupils were fully engaged and receptive to the knowledge Mikki Austin had to offer. Georgia Lund, year 7 said “I would like to thank Mikki for a fantastic day that I really enjoyed”. Miss Guirey said “I would like to thank the parents who supported the day, the pupils who took part and gave it 100% effort and demonstrated how lovely Rydon pupils are and a big thank you to Mikki Austin who came and spent the day with us and taught us lots.”
