Welcome... It’s February and many people will be buying cards and presents to give to loved ones on Valentine’s Day. Read about the origins of this annual event and who Saint Valentine was, in a light-hearted article ‘Is Romance Dead?’ by Cat Knowles-Fitton on page 17. Gay Richardson helps us sort out our wardrobes - the perfect job for a damp February Saturday - see our Style feature on page 24. Take advantage of the dry days to get out in the garden. Phocas lists the main tasks for February on page 27 along with his weather predictions. Our recipe this month on page 22 is a perfect Valentine’s Day dessert and is very simple to make too. We’re always pleased to publish items free of charge for local groups and charities. So, if you need help or want to spread the word about a good cause, please do get in touch. Anything non-commercial and of interest to our readers will be considered and if you can send a photograph as well, so much the better. Send your contributions to info@sussexlocal.net by 7th of the month for the following month’s magazine. We are also looking for photographs of local scenes for our covers. A small fee will be paid for any used. Have a great February, Kristina Words of Wit “Getting divorced just because you don't love a man is almost as silly as getting married just because you do.” ZSA ZSA GABOR

Award winning Gardens Monthly home & garden issues with Louisa Bell of City & Country Landscapes
E
ach New Year brings us a whole set of new gardens for the season ahead. It’s a really exciting prospect when we go out to meet new clients and look at their house and garden and listen to their ideas and plans. Sometimes a new conservatory or extension is going to make an impact on the garden. Other folks are just fed up with looking at the same old garden that they’ve had for 30 years and other new clients decide not to move and ‘do’ the garden instead. We can only build so many gardens in a year and it’s wonderful when some of these gardens are friends of previous clients and have come via recommendation. We still keep in touch with so many of our old clients – advising on plants, meeting them for lunch, talking about shrubs and trees we planted and marvelling at how everything has grown (of course, we did know that things would get to this size!). Gardens are such personal things. As a designer, I’m always determined that a garden should belong to the client, and be the culmination of the things they’ve most wished for – even if they didn’t know those wishes at the outset. Being a good designer means making the most of every single part of a garden, having reasons to walk around, areas to discover and wonderful plants that provide colour and structure throughout the year. The pictures that you see in magazines are gardens that are eminently possible for you to own too. When you think ‘Oh isn’t that lovely’, that could be your garden. As landscape contractors we were delighted to win a National Landscaping Award in December for construction excellence. This was awarded to us by the British Association of Landscape Industries. Unfortunately we couldn’t get to the awards ceremony in London as it was the ‘day of the snow’ and no trains were running and the roads were impassable. The guys were all dressed up in their suits (something we don’t see very
often!) and it was a great shame that we didn’t get there. I’m mentioning this just to show off really, because once you’ve told your Mum and your sister there aren’t many others to tell! Anyway, it proves that we really do know what we’re doing so you’ll be in safe hands when you decide to take on that wonderful garden make-over. When we take our portfolio out to clients, they always like to see the ‘before and after’ shots of gardens. I must admit, some of them are quite amazing, even to me. We usually go back to gardens we’ve built the following June with a professional photographer. We visit some gardens for years and watch them grow and mature. We have had some lovely testimonials from clients, which you can read on our new and updated website. It’s so wonderful to know that the gardens are being used and loved by whole families. If you would like to know more about the process of having your garden professionally designed and built, then please give us a call so that we can visit you and walk around your garden with you. I love it when a client says “I would never have thought of that!” It means we’re doing our job properly. I remember when we had an architect look at the possibility of extending our office and he came up with some wonderful ideas that I would NEVER have considered. See, that’s what it means when you hire a professional. Now, if only I could find a plumber..........By the way, I really do need a Person Friday in the office one day a week, hours to suit. The work will be varied and we do have a biscuit tin. If you’d like more details or an application form, then please drop me an email at louisa@wonderfulgardens.co.uk.

The club is always looking for new playing and social members, and anybody interested in playing cricket is invited to attend pre-season nets which commence in March at Chanctonbury leisure centre. Full details and contacts are available on our website www.storringtoncc.com. We’d also be interested in hearing from anybody who is able to assist in coaching youngsters. There is a keen
Croci in bloom for Polio Campaign Dozens of people in Storrington, Pulborough, West Chiltington & Ashington have taken part in the Rotary club of Storrington’s event to plant 3,500 crocus bulbs in various locations around the area in late October. Staff and pupils from Storrington First School joined forces with the Rotary club to plant 300 crocus bulbs together with people in the following areas –
Pulborough – approx 400bulbs were planted
Storrington –1,700 bulbs found their way into Planters in the High Street arranged by the Storrington Greenfingers and the Parish Council; others were planted around the village pond. Storrington Conservation Society arranged for planting on the Green area opposite Storrington Cycles, and Whitehorse Court took delivery of 700 bulbs.
West Chiltington - in St Mary’s Churchyard & around the Green near Hayling Pond, where volunteers planted 800 bulbs.
Ashington - 300 around the pond at Broadbridge Farm to be appreciated by walkers & ramblers alike. Thousands of Rotary members linked up with schools, businesses, organisations and individuals to hold hundreds of fund-raising events to meet the £1 million target for Rotary Day on Tuesday 23 February 2011 (Rotary’s 106th birthday). As a
SUSSEX LOCAL social side to the club and our bar is open during and after matches on Saturdays and Sundays. If you live in or close to Storrington, whether you be new to the area and looking for somewhere to play cricket, someone who has lived in the village for years and never really known about the cricket club or someone who is just looking for something new to do on weekends please contact us or pop down to the club on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. You’ll be very welcome. prelude to this massive campaign, the challenge was on to raise money and plant as many giant purple crocus bulbs as possible all across Great Britain and Ireland. Rotary invited everyone to plant bulbs in the autumn so that they bloom during February when Thanks for Life will reach its peak. The colour denotes the purple dye used to mark a child’s finger to show they have been immunised against polio. Each planting site will be clearly signed in February, to remind the public of the real reason behind the swathes of purple. Polio is a crippling, and sometimes fatal, disease and is still a terrifying reality for children in parts of Africa and Asia. However, it still threatens children everywhere. Being highly virulent it is only ever an air-flight away from the UK. Every £1 raised in this campaign will pay for five doses of the special anti -polio vaccine – that will protect children against polio forever. Storrington Rotary Club president Mike Webster said: “We are absolutely delighted to have planted 3,500 bulbs and want to thank everyone for getting behind our campaign so enthusiastically.” Rotary has been fighting to end polio for 25 years – and the world is now tantalisingly close to achieving that goal thanks to the joint hard work of organisations and governments. Anyone who has contributed funds will be able to say: ‘I helped to eradicate a disease completely for only the second time in history, after smallpox. Not only did I prevent children from dying or being maimed – I helped change the world’. “Any donation, however large or small, really will help to make a difference – and every penny will go towards the continuing efforts to destroy this dreadful disease. A polio-free world is just around the corner.”
