Changes

By Will Writer Emma Wells MIPW I’m very aware that despite the current situation I have been fortunate enough to be able continue with my work, albeit over the phone and via Zoom. When speaking to my clients there has be two resounding themes, the first is that they wished they’d got their affairs in order sooner. As we have all rather brutally discovered, you never know what is around the corner. The second theme is the sense of positivity and togetherness that this dreadful situation has highlighted. Despite the current hardships, the people I have spoken to have such positive outlooks. I’ve spoken to grandparents who had previously shied away from technology and now embrace video calls to keep in touch with their grandchildren. I’ve heard stories about neighbours who barely spoke before fetching shopping for the vulnerable on their street and I’ve laughed about how Thursday is marked by clapping for our NHS and how riled up it makes the seagulls! It’s been inspirational watching businesses like

restaurants and bars adapt so quickly to the changes thrown at them. I’ve enjoyed seeing local sports clubs find ways to keep their teams in contact and coming up with new ways to keep the kids active. Teachers have been great supporting children’s learning from a distance. On a personal level I’ve been astounded at how well my three children have adapted to the situation. They’ve accepted home schooling without (much) fuss and despite spending every waking minute in each other’s company, not seeing their friends or going to their usual clubs, they have been so kind and decent to each other. How incredible has watching Captain Tom Moore raise millions of pounds for the NHS been?! Truly humbling. This time has really shown just how resilient and considerate human beings can be and rather than lingering on the negatives I’m choosing to focus on the positives. On the other side of this I hope we keep up some of our new habits like speaking to neighbours, donating more to charity and continuing to be kind. If you would like to talk about making your Will or arranging Lasting Power of Attorney whilst keeping to social distancing guidelines please get in touch: emma.wells@nsure.co.uk or 01903 821010

34 Recipe

Cinnamon Eggy Bread

In lockdown my kids Archie & Willow have developed this month’s recipe. They expressed creativity, teamwork and enjoyed the results! Ingredients - serves 4 Ingredients available to pre order @village_larder • 1 Small Chewy Brown Loaf, cut into 6 thick slices • 2 eggs • 60ml milk • Pinch of salt • Half a tbsp cinnamon • 60g sugar • 2 tbsp salted butter • Serve with Sussex Honey and Caroline’s Dairy Vanilla Ice cream Method 1. Cut the crust of the bread and slice into three equal finger shapes. 2. Add the eggs, milk, and a pinch of salt into a shallow bowl and whisk. 3. In a separate shallow bowl combine the sugar and cinnamon 4. In a frying pan, melt the butter over a medium to high heat. 5. Coat the bread fingers in the eggy mixture shaking off the excess and place in the frying pan, rotating the bread until golden brown, this can be done in two batches. 6. Once golden immediately transfer to the sugary mixture and coat. 7. Serve warm drizzled with Sussex honey and a generous serving of Caroline’s Dairy ice cream Village Larder is open for a ‘PRE ORDER NO CONTACT COLLECTION SERVICE ONLY’. See our website and social media for how to order and shop updates. www.villagelarder.co.uk

38 Parish Council news

Ashington PC Neighbourhood Plan update With lockdown restrictions in place you may not have had a chance to visit our new commemorative bench and soldier silhouette on land beside the Parish Church. We are incredibly grateful to the Armed Forces Covenant for the grant to purchase these items. The Parish Council hopes to add to this area over the years as funds allow. We have completed Regulation 14 stage of our Neighbourhood Plan in May as the last piece of information that we needed was received from Historic England. All documents have been sent to HDC for checking and, once lockdown restrictions are lifted sufficiently, there will be another consultation process, known as Regulation 16. Having seen HDC’s Local Plan Review and the Neighbourhood Plan at Regulation 14 stage you will be more aware of just how detailed the planning process is and why it takes so long to prepare a Neighbourhood Plan. The lockdown restrictions saw changes to the way our Wardens worked, where their primary

focus became helping the elderly & vulnerable and those who were self-isolating. This was alongside the activities of the Parish Church ‘community hub’. Our Youth Worker was able to take youth activities online and held Zoom meetings with youngsters on a regular basis. Even the Parish Council embraced technology and held its first ever Zoom meeting. We saw more residents out and about for their daily walk, run or cycle. It was lovely to see families out exploring the village & local countryside. When restrictions are lifted, I hope that people do not retreat back into their homes and cars but continue to enjoy the beautiful countryside that we live in. To keep up to date with Parish Council information & activities check out our Facebook page (Ashington Parish Council). www.ashingtonpc.org.uk

40 Parish Council news

Storrington Parish Council Only meeting if necessary Statement from Storrington Parish Council As the Parish Council has not met during lockdown, the minutes of the extraordinary meeting in March are the most current ones to refer to for Council decisions and news. There are plans for a remote meeting later this month (May) and Councillors will be discussing content and distribution options for the next newsletter then. In the meantime, other relevant information relating to local responses to Covid-19 is being shared through the Parish Council website under the Covid-19 menu and on the home page. In order to prevent duplication or mixed messages, there is also a link to Horsham District Council’s website which provides all the information about what help and support is available to residents across the district. Website statement Storrington & Sullington Parish Council is planning to hold its first remote meeting on 27th May 2020 and this will be the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council. In the meantime, remote

meetings will only be arranged if deemed absolutely necessary or if a matter of public interest is to be discussed. Details of any remote meetings arranged will be published on the Parish Council website and on the village notice boards so that any members of the public wishing to participate can register to do so. Whilst the Parish Office is closed, the Clerk and Deputy Clerk are still available to answer any enquiries via telephone or email. However, if you have any issues that you consider require public discussion by the Parish Council, please contact us. www.storrington-pc.gov.uk Meanwhile a message from the Storrington community Partnership. If you are unable to leave your home the Storrington Community Support Hub can help you with picking up shopping, medication, or with a friendly phone call. Call 07514 118678 9am to 2pm, Monday to Saturday. If you are having problems contacting the Volunteer Hub or you have concern for a neighbour, call Horsham District Council on 01403 215230.

Parish Council News / Business Directory

Thakeham PC While writing this article, at the start of May, the country is still in lockdown. Hopefully by the time you read this life may have returned to some degree of “normal”. If you still need support, either with shopping, prescriptions or just someone to talk to you can find details of organisations and local volunteers on or website: visit www.thakehamparish.co.uk and look for the COVID-19 Support Page, which will be updated as the national guidance evolves. Village Shop We know residents were delighted by the longawaited opening of ‘Meadows Stores’ village shop on the Abingworth development! After many delays and the challenges of fitting-out the shop during the current CV-19 situation, shop owner Simon and shop manager Jane opened their doors to customers at the end of April. The independent business aims to stock local produce as well convenience-store essentials. When restrictions have been lifted the intention is also to offer a café service. The shop is located by the new Village Hall on Abingworth Crescent, with ample parking.

Planning objection overruled On 21st April Horsham District Council’s planning committee (south) voted narrowly in favour of approving the developer’s latest Abingworth Phase 3 plans, overruling the Parish’s strongly objection to the proposal to increase the house numbers from 25 to 75. We must now look ahead to the future, to secure the community benefits that the scheme has yet to deliver (particularly the new allotments) and focus our energy on resisting further excessive housing within the parish. You can find out more about the progress of this development on our website. Virtual council meetings Until our meetings can resume physically we are trialling virtual Parish Council meetings, sticking to our original schedule (see our Council Meetings web page). Residents can attend by emailing clerk@thakehamparish.co.uk (or calling 01798 815305) by noon on the Friday before each Monday meeting. Virtual meeting invitees will be sent an email link to join, with guidance on taking part. The Village Hall and Parish Office at Abingworth unfortunately remain closed for the time being, and we are having to conduct most business – including planning matters – electronically. www.thakehamparish.co.uk
