Welcome... At the time of writing, summer seems to have arrived in splendid style. Let’s hope the month with the longest nights continues to be warm so we can all enjoy plenty of outdoor activities and alfresco dining. We love live music and this month we’ve two great music competitions for you to enter. The Madehurst Big Night Out is back next month with ‘Rumours of Fleetwood Mac’ headlining the show. You could be there, see page 42 for full details. There’s another great weekend of live music at the Chichester Priory Park Festival where you can also enjoy poetry, performance arts and children’s entertainment. We’ve got a pair of tickets to give away, see page 43 for how to enter. Launched in Brighton earlier this year, food sharing app “OLIO” tackles the problem of leftover food. Read Lynn Smith’s interesting article and download the app to get involved, see page 28.

Sussex Snippets A new Parish Council grouping has launched to provide a strong and unified representation for this area in discussions with Gatwick, NATS, the CAA, the Department for Transport, airport and airlines over aircraft noise issues. APCAG (Association of Parish Councils Aviation Group) has been endorsed by six founder member parishes, representing over 10,000 residents: Pulborough, Wisborough Green, Kirdford, Loxwood, Plaistow and Ifold and it is planned for more to join; and as an organization comprising democratically elected bodies, APCAG’s feels that its voice is more likely to be heard than the voice of a protest group. Contact: peter@drummond.co.uk ‘This is my Theatre’ invites you to celebrate Shakespeare's 400th anniversary with their telling of his famous love story Romeo and Juliet brought to life in Brighton’s oldest building, St Peter’s Church on the edge of Preston Park; and in the rural Tortington Church on the outskirts of Arundel. SUSSEX LOCAL West Sussex County Council is considering making changes to Household Waste Recycling Sites – and is holding a public consultation to find out what people think – you can take part in the consultation online until Sunday 12th June. The County Council has reviewed its Household Waste Recycling Sites because of a need to make £18.6m in savings across all council services next year. www.haveyoursay.westsussex.gov.uk/waste management-services/hwrs Sullivan’s Heroes is a new charity, which has been set up to help fund home adaptations for disabled children; the idea for the charity was born during the process of Fiona and Richard Smith adapting their own property for their disabled son, Sullivan. As well as fundraising to provide grants for families towards their child’s home adaptations, where the costs exceed that of a council grant awarded – a situation which happens all too often; the charity also provides a website platform where families can set up their own fundraising towards the building costs. www.sullivansheroes.org Teenagers who need help with mood swings, body image and anxiety can now look to their local West Sussex library for support. Shelf Help is a new collection of books that have been reviewed and selected by clinicians and young people to help with a wide-range of mental health issues, the collection tackles top tackles topics from life pressures and depression to self-harm and exams, and includes books such as ‘Stuff that Sucks’ and ‘Mind Your Head.’ www.westsussex.gov.uk/libraries. Visiting Littlehampton for a family day on the beach has turned into an expensive exercise and that’s before you’ve bought the ice creams. Your editors went with friends from out of the area over the May Bank holiday, and were astounded to find, on parking up, that the charge for East Beach car park was £7 for any stay over two hours. To add insult to injury, the machine doesn’t take cards! We later found out there is an “app” you can download to pay, not that this was apparent from any signs, and just what you want to be messing about with when you have several small children wanting to get on the beach on a boiling hot day. Littlehampton won’t be getting our business in future, when Worthing charges £1 an hour to park, and Goring Gap is free. Feedback? info@sussexlocal.net

Storrington Business Club Southern Water wants to work with businesses in

SUSSEX LOCAL Storrington to keep sewers running clear in the South East. Last year there were 23,000 blockages in drains and sewers in the Southern Water region, about twothirds of which are caused by fat, oil and grease being poured down the kitchen sink; or non-flushable items being flushed in the toilet instead of being put in the bin. The wastewater treatment works in Storrington has been identified as one of the worst in the region for becoming blocked with fat, oil and grease. Southern Water’s customer team is visiting all food and catering outlets in the village to offer advice and make sure they have suitable products and processes in place. They are also working with Environmental Health to support the necessary education exercise. As a last resort Southern Water is able to take legal enforcement action. Manley’s Hill roundabout: The petition is still active on Storrington’s website and Facebook page, and with some local organisations. A high proportion of signatories have added supportive comments. The meeting agreed that the petition should be presented at the next Chanctonbury County Local Committee. A recent meeting between council representatives about the district’s car parks was inconclusive, with contradictory views on the mechanisms for operating the car parks and payment. There is a concern that residential streets will become even more congested as business employees use them for free parking – the situation in Church Street confirms that people will avoid even relatively inexpensive car park charges by parking on the street. Storrington In Bloom: It was agreed that it would be helpful if businesses could make their contributions to this year’s In Bloom by bank transfer, without having to be pestered. It was requested that traders unable to make contributions this year let In Bloom know to save unnecessary visits. Storrington Business Club storringtonbbc@gmail.com

Storrington Conservation Society The seasonal work at Fryern Dell has come to an end to avoid disturbing nesting birds, and the Society is now embarking on its summer programme, besides bank restoration, they plan for footpath improvements at The Glade and clearing the Riverside walk, amongst other items. The work party on 4th June meets at 10am at The Glade, to clear the paths of brambles etc., and improve the walking surfaces. Volunteers ready to wield shovels and wheelbarrows will be greatly appreciated. For details of the Thursday work party on 16th June, at 2pm, please refer to the website. 26 Recipe

Easy Meatloaf Some dishes are eternal family favourites, here’s one of ours... Ingredients (serves 8): 450g minced ham 450g minced beef or lamb Juice and rind 1 large orange 1 medium onion, chopped 75g fresh white bread crumbs 1 egg 2tbsp chopped parsley Salt, Black pepper and ground mace To serve: Fried onion in rings 25g dry roasted peanuts

Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/gas Mark 5. Mix all the ingredients together, in a food processor if you wish. If you need to mince the ham do this first, then add the rest of the ingredients.

Don't over process as it is far nicer with a good rough texture. 2. Pack the mixture into a 1.2litre terrine or loaf tin. Cover with foil or greaseproof paper and a lid. Bake in the middle or lower middle of the oven for 1 hour. 3. Remove from the oven and serve hot or cold, topped with the onion rings and nuts, with a good spicy sauce. Food Sharing A real world response to a first world problem Globally more than a third of all food produced goes uneaten, and households are responsible for half of all of the UK’s food waste – binning over £12billion of edible food each year, at a staggering cost of £700 to the average family. A horrifying statistic when you consider that a third of the UK’s families live below the poverty line. However, no matter how hard you may try not to overbuy, the supermarkets tempt us with clever offers – buy three for two, buy one get one free – that make buying more food than you need almost a default position.

Tessa and Saasha - (c) Annabel Staff

However, there is now an alternative to the rubbish bin for those finding themselves with a surplus of perfectly edible foodstuffs. OLIO is a free app designed to connect neighbours with each other and with local independent shops and cafes so that surplus food can be shared rather than thrown away. This could include food nearing its sell-by date from shops, cafes and markets; spare vegetables from the allotment; cakes from an amateur baker; or groceries from household fridges when people go away or move home. As long as it’s edible, it can be shared on OLIO.

OLIO is the brainchild of close friends Saasha Celestial-One and Tessa Cook, both of whom grew up in rural families and had instilled into them a strong aversion to waste of any kind. What Saasha describes as ‘the light bulb moment for Olio,” came some years later: ”Tessa was moving country and found herself with good food that she just couldn’t bring herself to throw away. After failing to find anyone to give it to, she ended up having to smuggle it back into the UK, and thought there had to be a better solution! And so OLIO was born.” Launched in London in December 2015, the app has been following a roll out strategy across cities in the UK, Saasha describes the app as “Our response to the massive and unsustainable problem of food waste,” going on to explain that, “Ultimately, we're all about trying to create a scalable platform that others can take and use in their local communities to stop good food from being thrown away.” And the process does seem very straightforward. Once the app has been downloaded to a mobile phone – OLIO is currently supported by the iPhone

through the door

29

30 Living iPad, iPad Mini and is optimised for the iPhone 5 and higher – then the user can add items to OLIO or browse the listings and request an item. Some people will only add items, and others will only request items, whilst many will do both. How the items are collected depends entirely upon personal choice, if individuals donating items would rather not have the food collected from their own home then they have a range of options – a public meeting place, or dropping off the item at the home of the person who requested it, or by delivering/collecting from an OLIO drop-off point or Drop-Box. OLIO’s website, which is easy to use and has a friendly, vibrant feel, offers plenty of information on how to get started and also provides a useful list of guidelines for those using the service. Launched in Brighton in March this year, there are already nine drop-boxes in Brighton and Hove, in independent shops and cafes, with the organisers already looking for more businesses to host dropboxes across Sussex. Saasha stresses that even though there may not currently be a drop-box in your community at present then as long as you are able to download the free app, then anyone can use OLIO, anywhere in the county. Although, she explains: “Of course the experience is better the more people in your area that are using it, so it’s a good idea to encourage your neighbours and local shops to get on board, too.” One of OLIO’s Ambassador’s is Claire

SUSSEX LOCAL

Tymoshyshyn, manager of Brighton’s Angel Food Bakery and Kitchen, who explained: “I love that instead of throwing away fresh food that I wouldn’t be able to use or give to a food bank, I can simply take a photo and offer it to the whole community with a click of a button. OLIO has also enabled my bakery to raise money for a local charity by asking for a small donation when we share leftover cakes.” Although users can choose to charge for their items, nearly all of the food posted on the app is free – OLIO’s guidelines state that if someone does choose to charge for their items then that charge should be at least 50 percent off the original price paid. For those concerned about food safety, Saasha explains

32 Living that, “OLIO is fully compliant with all UK food law. This is a very important area for us and so there are a couple of things that our users need to be aware of. First 'use by' dates refer to the safety of the product, and retailers cannot sell or give away any food after this date. However, there is no such legislation governing what individuals can or cannot do with food past its use by date, yet we very rarely see items past their use by dates on OLIO.” In fact, the first guideline listed on OLIO’s website is “Good enough for you,” namely that users should only add food that they themselves would be willing to eat. Saasha also explains another term often seen on food labeling: “The other thing to consider is the 'best before' date. This refers to the date at which the item is optimal for freshness and taste, although most items can be eaten deliciously for weeks, months and even years after this date. We see lots of items past their best before date on OLIO, and they are generally requested very quickly. We also have the ability for our users to report any item to us should there be any concerns; however we've not yet had any item legitimately reported to us for health and safety reasons. Finally, we do ask that all our users describe how the food has been stored and packaged when posting food on the app, and that the person picking up the food ask any questions needed to satisfy themselves

about the conditions in which the food has been kept.” The website also refers users to a number of useful links to safety and hygiene standards set out by The Food Standards Agency’s website, and reminds users that there are controlled substances that cannot be sold on OLIO, such as tobacco and alcohol. However, if someone holds a license to sell alcohol then they can sell alcohol on OLIO, so long as it is discounted by at least 50 percent. Individuals without a license can only add alcohol that is available for free. OLIO’s journey to date has been relatively short but already demand has taken the app UK-wide and Olio’s founders have had people from other countries respond to their idea, and they plan soon to take their model into other markets. In Your Garden Monthly gardening ideas and tasks by Andrew Staib of Glorious Gardens Love your Shade Sometimes I hear people despair that their garden is too shady. However there are wonderful designs and planting combinations you can do in shady areas. After all shade is a natural part of the landscape and plants and wildlife have adapted to these areas. Indeed some plants can’t thrive without dappled or deep shade.

might want to enliven the area with bright flowers or even a bright metallic sculpture.

Japanese Anemone

Rather than fret about the darkness you can embrace it and go for a woodland theme, choosing traditional English or European woodland plants. With a nice thick bark mulch over the soil amongst your new plants you can create a space that could have been there for decades full of mystery that invites you towards it. You can even create a path of bark that runs through the planting. You can make the shady part of your garden a place of lush coolness and simple life where your eyes, tired from looking at screens, mobiles and lists of things to do, can relax and dream of the forests.

Bright Spots Because darkness absorbs the light the shady borders, especially if there are trees above, often appear deeper and further away which can enhance a garden’s size. But if that is not a consideration you Dicentra

Japanese anemonies are brilliant for creating sparks of light in the gloom and they also tolerate dry soil. If your soil is moist you can go for the delicate heart shaped flowers of Dicentra or Astillbe or the proud early and late season red and pinks of Cyclamen which can be planted between the roots of craggy old trees. If you wish the area to have a civilized, classical look you could purchase some great Cretian terracotta urns that will catch any light going which will contrast with the deeper darkness behind. They will also tie in the area to any hard materials in the rest of the garden like paths, patios and the house itself.

Planting Up

Astrantia

For perennial planting there are the bullet proof choices of Alchamilla Mollis, Astrantia with their papery flowers, Epimedium (Bishop’s Hat), Hellebours and the purple flowering Geranium phaeum. As well as checking out the moisture content of the soil make sure you check out the soil acidity. If you are lucky enough to have acid soil you can try Rhododendrons and Azaleas. Bulbs are great in shady areas and often thrive as they can come and go before the deciduous trees have come into leaf. As well as obvious contenders like Narsissi and Blue Bells you could try the weird dutch hats of Erythronium as well as Chionodoxa and Scilla. For ground cover try Euphorbia amygdaloides (if you have a larger space and don’t mind them spreading about), plus Persicaria superb (flowers forever it seems), the achingly delicate Corydalis plus Ajuga and Violas. With a little research (garden centres will often have a shady plant section) and good plant combinations you can turn this often neglected area into one of the main features of your garden.

Places to visit in June If you haven’t been to Great Dixter gardens then you are in for a beautiful surprise. It is a garden that regularly comes up as garden design professionals favourite garden and for years has been a horticulturalist’s Mecca. Surrounding a 15 Century House these gardens were developed by Christopher Lloyd, gardener and garden writer, over a 40 year period and are now in the hands of the Great Dixter Charity Trust. Situated in Northian, near Rye, they re open from 115pm and as well as having a varying degree of day and week long courses on plants and design, have Behind the Scenes days and Meadow Gardening educational days. From 2-5pm each day the medieval part of the house is open to the public. www.greatdixter.co.uk

Gardening Tasks for June 

A quick hoe each week of all your beds will save HOURS of knee crunching effort having to pull them out by hand – get yourself a lightweight ‘swoe’ (right) and you will be a contended gardener  Pinch out the little side growing tips of your tomatoes so that they grow nice and tall and their energy remains focused into producing fruit rather than leggy stems  Also keep sowing lettuces and radishes every two weeks for a continuous supply throughout the summer

Water any plants you put in this year

Deadhead the old sweet pea flowers to encourage the plant to keep flowering

Prune shrubs that flowered in the spring so that the new growth of this year, which they will flower on next year, is contained.

Lastly if you mow your lawn every week rather than every fortnight you will have a summer of pleasure looking out at your neat green space rather than living with a shaggy lawn for half the time. See it as free gym membership.

Rydon Closure Unanswered Questions By Richard Evea

I am writing this in two capacities. Firstly I am a member of Storrington and Sullington Parish Council and secondly I am a recently retired secondary head teacher who spent twenty years as a Head Teacher working closely with West Sussex County Council (WSCC)on behalf of children to improve their schooling and their subsequent life chances. The Parish Council welcomed my offer to work on their behalf to try to ensure that our aspiration for an 11 – 16 secondary school became a reality, as identified in the parish Neighbourhood Plan. The Governors of Rydon were similarly pleased to accept my offer of free consultancy in their bid to become a Rydon Community College 2015 secondary school (c)Gayle Bardgett once again within the local authority’s consultations on the restructuring of schools within the so-called STARS area. I have been joined in this work by two further consultants, and we share over sixty years of secondary headship experience in eight very different schools. In addition to this, one of us has experience as a national leader of education, another as senior advisor to WSCC, and the last as Regional Leader with The National College of School Leadership. This experience was on offer to WSCC at the recent Select Committee hearing on the proposed changes to the STARS schools, but was refused. This left what evidence was presented unchallenged and allowed assertions favourable to the Council’s plans to be presented as fact. Consequently I welcome this opportunity to ask some questions that I believe parents and the wider community deserve to have answered.Prior to asking these questions I would like to express my deep sadness and my professional disappointment at the tactics pursued by a Local Authority that I worked closely with, and held in very high regard, for twenty years. The apparent bias, lack of transparency, use of misleading language, misuse of research and avoidance of financial detail have all contributed to what I consider to be a flawed decision to close

SUSSEX LOCAL Rydon Community College and leave the children of the STARS area with what will at best, be a second rate secondary school experience.

The Unanswered Questions I would like to see published answers to the following questions: How much funding has been offered to Steyning Grammar School (SGS) to run the Storrington annex site ? We know that SGS currently receives nearly £185,000 grant per annum to support the running of their Church Street site as an annex to the main school. This money is in addition to the usual funding per pupil and is recognised as a necessary extra cost to fund schools which are spread over two or more sites, (known as “split site” schools). The Church Street site is within a very short walk from the main school and has enough children to generate the funding for a significant number of teachers. How much more will it cost to run an annex 7 miles away that will be too small to generate sufficient staff to offer an experience equal to that enjoyed at Church Street? Or even that enjoyed by the Ofsted judged outstanding schools nearby? The costs haven’t been disclosed to date. What is the actual cost of transporting children from the STARS area to Steyning Grammar? A “guesstimate” has been provided at different times, but this has been so qualified by untested assertions that I doubt their accuracy. WSCC claim that it is in the region of £300,000 a year. I have been given an estimate which I understand to be reliable, of £600,000. The children are taken out of their community daily because there are no school places for them locally. The cost of this transport should be taken into account when WSCC argue the case that an 11-16 secondary school at Rydon is not financially viable. What will be the cost of replacing the temporary buildings at SGS? There have been reports that a grant totalling several million pounds has been allocated to West Sussex to convert temporary classrooms at Steyning which a currently provide for 300 children. Coincidentally, two year groups of Rydon children, years 10 and 11, total 300. To spend millions of pounds to build classrooms for children who have to be bussed 14 miles every day to use them, is questionable at best. What will be the true cost of relocating Thakeham First School within the Rydon campus? With on average only 5 children per year group living in Thakeham, has a proper cost/benefit assessment been carried out? West Sussex officers estimate a total cost of some £4 million to adapt Rydon to accommodate Thakeham First School. Are WSCC officers able to demonstrate how they are satisfied that the children due to attend the Stey-

Rydon

through the door ing Grammar (Storrington Annex) will receive a good Key Stage 3 experience? This is a responsibility that the Officers have not yet met. I do not accept that it is enough to trust our children’s futures to the untested or validated assertions of Steyning Grammar in this regard. I do not question the current head teacher’s integrity - I am sure that he will do all in his power to make this experiment work but the simple fact is that it is just that – an experiment. Ten classes of children in the Storrington annex do not generate sufficient funding to provide enough teachers – including specialists - to teach all the subjects of the National Curriculum Key Stage3 . Without very significant numbers of extra teachers, a good and effective timetable cannot be written whilst maintaining the current outstanding extra-curricular and enrichment programme. Large numbers of classes will have to be taught English, Maths and Science by more than one teacher and it is likely that the teacher sharing the class will not be a subject specialist. This is not the case for children at Rydon at the moment. If it were I doubt that Ofsted inspectors would have been as positive about the good progress that the children currently make. An additional concern is that if it is not future-proofed, subsequent head teachers may not have the same commitment to a community some seven miles away. There have been six heads at SGS since I took up my first headship in West Sussex in 1988. How have the WSCC officers arrived at their housing projections? The Health Service are quoted as projecting a very large population growth as part of their argument for a larger doctor’s practice in Storrington. They must be using a very different tool to that employed by the officers at WSCC. In the submission to the Scrutiny Committee, they say that only 217 houses and 14 flats will be delivered in the STARS area by 2031! It is interesting how different protagonists will ensure that inconvenient facts will not impair their carefully crafted proposals. A brief survey of Parish councils and a look at local neighbourhood plans and the relevant sections of the Horsham District plan indicate that the figure could be over 800 in the STARS catchment area and a further 2000 in the Steyning and Weald School catchments. This does not include any speculation over the future of the Shoreham works or the aftermath of the addition runway decision when it is made. Why has there been no consultation on the proposal to change Rydon to an Church of England aided school? I may be wrong but I believe that since SGS is a voluntary aided school the Storrington annex would immediately, on day one of opening, become governed, managed and led as a Church of England establishment. Surely this should have been included as part of the consultation process.

Academy Application The Governors intend to appeal to the Schools Adjudicator regarding the decision to close our “rural” school and by the time this is published will have submitted their initial Academy bid. The application is progressing, and there will soon be opportunities for the Rydon Governors to gauge local support for this. Plans are being drawn up for a public meeting and the date for this will be published soon. A petition is being signed and details of this will be widely shared.

The Process At the time of writing there has still been no written communication from Louise Goldsmith, Leader of WSCC, direct to either the Head Teacher or the Chair of Governors of Rydon regarding her decision to close their school. I am certain that I am not alone in finding this appalling. To learn that your school is about to close from the safe distance of a press release is not good enough. The school, the governors, the head and her staff have been through two very good Ofsted inspections. It is my considered opinion that they have been shamefully treated by West Sussex officers and others throughout the entire process. That said, our fight to secure a decent secondary school and choice for parents of children in the STARS area continues. You can keep up to date by searching for the “STARS Schools Future” group on Facebook. Editor’s note The WSCC document “Planning School Places 2015 calculated an increase of 3,414 total school places in Horsham District by 2031 . The 2016 version revises the increase o 4,506. The document outlines ideas of how this shortfall could be covered up to only a maximum of 2,870 places. Other points from the 2016 document include: Page 49 “Pupil numbers in (Steyning/Chanctonbury) at both primary and secondary age have remained fairly static in recent years. We are now experiencing a rising trend similar to that which has been experienced in more urban localities in previous years”. Page 53 mentions the “aspiration to provide a dedicated secondary school to serve Southwater”. Following Select Committee’s decision there will be a further 28 day period of consultation. The council stress this is only for any “new information” which has not already been considered. Whether they will consider an alternative view to their house building forecasts remains to be seen. At the time of going to press, WSCC were unable to say precisely when the 28 day period would start, but advise to keep checking their website. Your feedback is welcome - please email us an info@sussexlocal.net

Rydon Closure - how much was that again?

After a widely discredited consultation process, West Sussex County Council rubber stamp the decision to close Rydon - but say it will cost £4 million more than they originally stated. Jeff reports. If your employer is planning to put you out of a job, accepted practice is that you go through a consultation process, and at least have a personal interview to hear the bad news. In a final act of total disregard for, at the very least, common courtesy, the spreadsheet-wielding apparatchiks of West Sussex County Council advised Alison Murphy, Rydon’s embattled Head Teacher, that her school would be closing in just over a Alison Murphy year’s time - via a general (c)Sussex Local press release. If that wasn’t bad enough, the people we entrust with our children’s education - and who tell us that every decision they take is with only the best interest of that education - pushed out the news just days prior to the Rydon Year 6 pupils taking the (widely-derided) SAT tests. Louise Goldsmith, Conservative Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “...we have listened very carefully to the opinions and arguments from all sides before endorsing this officer recommendation. “Having weighed up all the information and fully discussed it with the Cabinet Member for Education and Skills (Conservative Richard Burrett) I strongly believe this reorganisation will offer an improved education to current and future generations and will protect them from the negative effects which occur when pupils transfer between different schools. “ Many people might think that both these statements are somewhat removed from the reality of how Ms Goldsmith’s council has actually operated. For example, 1,241 respondents were against the proposed closure of Rydon, and 384 supported it, so it isn’t immediately apparent how much “weighing up” of that information Ms Goldsmith did, but it certainly reinforced the view of many that this was a foregone conclusion from the outset. As for protecting from the negative effects of a transfer between schools, all this has done is brought that transition forward one year. Pupils will still have to change school, even if they are wearing the same uniform. Indeed, WSCC stated policy is to “minimise the amount of times children have to transfer from one setting to another”. From the original consultation onwards, the mantra from WSCC has been that the education of our children was at the forefront of these proposals., and that the process was even-handed. Yet their attitude in practice has been the promotion of the proposals

from the point of view of the closure of Rydon, in favour of Steyning Grammar. Jay Mercer, opened his address to the meeting of the Select Committee by introducing himself as the Director of Education and Skills - he isn’t. He is the “Interim Director” and a self-employed hired consultant brought in to push this process through. He told the meeting that the main reason for his objection to Rydon becoming an 11-16 school, was that the “extra places which would be created would not be justified by the housing projections”. (That’s funny the original reason for all the changes, as stated last July, was supposed to be about achieving the best possible education for our children). In his report to the committee, those projections state that between Amberley, Ashington, Storrington, Thakeham and Washington, they were counting just 217 houses and 14 flats to be built from now until the year 2031. No wonder he said he didn’t want to go into detail on camera. Let’s do it for him. In his words - “If the housing mix remains unchanged from the current approved planning applications.....” Mr Mercer is assuming that no new planning applications will be proposed for the next fourteen years. At the same time, others are telling us that the Glebe Surgery is expecting an uplift in patients from 12,000 to 16,000 by the year 2020. So now apparently it’s not so much about education but housing. Hold on though - didn’t the hapless Jeremy Hunt, previous Cabinet Councillor for Education, tell us last October that Rydon’s extensive playing fields the issue was pretty (c)Sussex Local much all about the general £72m deficit WSCC had to find next year? Indeed, we were told how little it would cost to fund the proposals - just £2.1m. Now, hidden away at the end of Annexe 2 of the proposal, are the words “the recommendations....are estimated to cost an additional £1.120m for the primary school works and (an additional) £3.018m for the secondary school works ((additional) total £4.138m)”. So from £2.1m to £6.2m. That’s a 200% increase in six months. Rydon governors say they could provide an 11-16 school for around £2m, so that, together with the primary school works, would total just over £3m. In other words, half the cost of closing Rydon. You figure it out - because it makes no sense to me.

Shall we dance? Children’s dancing in Storrington The physical and mental benefits of dance have been well documented and people have enjoyed dancing since time immemorial. Now Lucy Peacock has brought her Dance Hut to the Chanctonbury Leisure Centre in Storrington and told Sussex Local that having danced since the age of three, she is dedicated to bringing the joys and rewards of dance to local children aged three and over. Lucy is a mother of a three year old and realised that a gap existed for dance tuition for the under fives in this area. The Dance Hut was born in February this year and offers lessons in tap, modern, freestyle and street plus drama and theatre-craft. Lucy explained that her classes are designed to be friendly and fun and she strives to instil a lifetime love of dance and music in the children. Do you know your margins? “If you know your margins you can increase your profits” says Sarah from Monks Chartered Accountants, Storrington Understanding you gross and net profit margin is important when running a business as you can then consider ways in which to improve them. Gross margin is what is left after subtracting the cost of goods sold from sales. So if you have sales of £125,000 and the cost of the goods sold is £75,000 your gross profit is £50,000 and the gross profit margin is 40% (profit divided by sales). It is from the gross profit that all remaining overheads are paid (rent, salaries, insurance, taxes, etc). What’s left over after all overheads are paid is net profit. In the example above if you have overheads of £20,000, then you would be left with a net profit of £30,000 which is a net profit margin of 24% (net profit divided by sales) It is important to look at both margins and the “spread” between them as changes in pricing, business practices, repairs, etc. will impact one or both. Reviewing the margins made on individual jobs will help indicate the contribution made to the overall business position (some you may find are loss making and not worth actually doing!) Once you know your margins you can then look at ways to improve them. For instance can you get a better deal or buy in bulk from suppliers? Can you

raise your sales prices? Both will increase your gross profit margin. Can reduce your insurance costs or phone costs which would increase your net profit margin? Having an up to date and robust book keeping and accounting system in place can enable you to review these margins periodically and with ease. News from Storrington & Sullington Parish Council by Anna Worthington-Leese – Parish Council Chairman Storrington & Sullington and Washington Neighbourhood Plans

The 2016 SADCASE Classic Car Show

By the time you are reading this, we hope to have an action plan in place to address the issues raised by the Examiner so that our Neighbourhood Plan can be resubmitted later this year. As reported last month, we are working closely with Horsham District Council to ensure that the amended plan will be approved for referendum later this year. If you would like any further information about the process, please contact the Parish Council offices on 01903 746547.

Just a reminder that this event is being held on Sunday 31st July at the Hurston Lane recreation ground. There will be a large display of classic and sports vehicles along with live entertainment, food and drink. Please come along between 10 am and 4 pm.

Annual Parish Meeting The Annual Parish Meeting took place on Wednesday 4th May where we welcomed 30 members of the public. Items discussed included the future of the Glebe Field and doctors’ surgery and the problem of poor mobile phone reception in the village. There has been a suggestion that the Parish Council should investigate the possibility of the installation of a mast in the village and we would be grateful for your opinions on this subject.

Village Day 2017 The Parish Council is hoping to reintroduce Storrington Village Day for 2017 and we would love to hear from anyone who would like to get involved with the preparations for this event. Please contact the Parish Clerk on 01903 746547.

through the door STARS Schools – decision by WSCC The Parish Council is very disappointed that despite objections from the majority of parents (and this council) the Leader of West Sussex County Council, Louise Goldsmith, has endorsed the decision to close Rydon Community College in 2017 and reopen the site as a two-year annexe of Steyning Grammar School. This Parish Council believes that we and our neighbouring villages deserve a fully fledged secondary school and we support the governors of Rydon in their endeavours to apply for Academy Status.

Ashington Parish Council Neighbourhood Plan & Village Surveys Many thanks to all of you who completed your Village Surveys. We will be analysing the results and planning the next stage of the Neighbourhood Plan. You may have seen posters and adverts asking for landowners, developers or agents to bring to our attention any land in the Parish that may be available for development in the future. This is a normal part of any Neighbourhood Plan and, indeed, Horsham District Council conduct their own ‘Call for Sites’ across the District annually. Rest assured that the Neighbourhood Plan process requires full planning assessment of all sites (to see if they comply to HDC’s planning policies) and full public consultation (with Ashington residents and other stakeholders) before any are approved or rejected. The site selection process will not happen for some time yet as the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group have much work yet to do to identify what residents vision for the village is and what its needs are.

They can be reported by telephoning 01243 642105 or visit their website www.westsussex.gov.uk Ashington Parish Council cannot repair potholes and reporting them to the Parish Clerk simply adds delays as she then has to report them to WSCC.

London Road Parking The Parish Council is addressing the issue of parking on London Road verges near the Co-op. It is applying to WSCC (as the highway authority) for a licence to install bollards and then use its own funds to purchase and install the bollards. Can we please ask residents not to park on other verges in the village as it makes the village look a mess and we’re sure residents don’t want to pay for bollards to be installed everywhere!
