Welcome... The results of our survey last November indicated that many Sussex Local readers are wildlife lovers. So, we are pleased to be able to include an interview with Dr Tony Whitbread, Chief Executive of the Sussex Wildlife Trust in this month’s issue. Read what Dr Whitbread has to say about the recent government proposals to sell off Britain’s woodlands and other wildlife related topics starting on page 17. By the way, many congratulations to Beverley Mallett who was the winner of £150 in our reader survey prize draw! Ten other lucky readers also won £25 each. March is one of my favourite months, the weather tends to brighten up and the first spring flowers make an appearance. Phocas has “Spring fever” and is keen to get you working hard out in the garden see page 26. We’ve also got the lowdown on this season’s trends from Gay our style guru, see page 24. Gay is also looking forward to styling our January Style Makeover winner Doreen Harbour from Ashington. Look out for Doreen who will be appearing ‘before’ and ‘after’ in next month’s magazine. There’s plenty of events in our area this month too so keep our What’s On guide to hand, see pages 4 - 7. Enjoy March, Kristina Words of Wit “Two wrongs don’t make a right, but they make a good excuse.” PHYCHIATRIST THOMAS SZASZ

A new season By Louisa Bell of City & Country Landscapes Au revoir It’s that wonderful time of year. The garden centres are full of seed packets and tiny incubators. I can’t help but feel the pull of the garden and last weekend we bought all the exciting vegetables that we’d like to grow this year. We have such high hopes. You look at the pictures on the packet – not a hole, a whitefly, a crooked carrot in sight. Yes, you think. This year, those will be our carrots. As a new season begins, we also look at our advertising budgets for the year. We cover quite a large geographical area as far as design and construction are concerned: Most of Sussex, some of Surrey and parts of London. We need to advertise in all of these places and so I’ve reached the decision that I have to move my advertising pound onto pastures new this year. I’ve loved writing for Sussex Local as we’ve met so many great clients. We’ve designed and built several gardens in Storrington, West Chiltington, Thakeham, Pulborough and Nutbourne, and what lovely garden owners too. This is, after all, our local area and we are really happy to work and support any aspect of gardening close to home. I’ll still be putting articles onto our website, if you’d like to keep up with our garden ideas. Also, we are ‘blogging’ now – mainly because our website company says we have to, and from no strong desire to tell the world our business. We shall also tweet and do other things that make Google love us. At the same time, I’ll still be listening to The Archers and thanking God for the old fashioned way of life. (Although I must say, I still haven’t forgiven
Vanessa W for Nigel’s demise – Archers listeners only!) On April 5th, I will be giving a talk about gardens to the University of the 3rd Age in Rustington at the Woodland Centre and on April 10th, Parham House are having a wonderful Gardens Day and I’ll be there too. Parham have kindly asked me to give a number of talks about garden design in their Seed Room during the day, so if you’d like to come along, I’d love to see you. The talk will, hopefully, be of interest to all gardeners – whatever the size of your estate!
We are still here to design and build your gardens, and please remember our website at www.wonderfulgardens.co.uk. You know that we are happy to come out and see you, free of charge to all of our Sussex Local readers, and talk through ideas, hopes, dreams and – more sensibly – budgets to build your new garden. We’ve had a lovely start to the year with diverse projects – at the moment we’re in a pond in Nutbourne. Literally. We’ve just laid land drains on a waterlogged site in Chailey. We’ve tendered for new school grounds in Worthing and a housing development in East Preston. I saw a wonderful house in Cranleigh today with 47 acres, and had a call this afternoon from a landscaper in Holland Park. We’re working on designs for stream banks, lovely woodland gardens in West Chilt, boundary disputes in Storrington and the gardens of a listed building in Bolney, plus planting up gorgeous borders around a pool in Fittleworth. I am so lucky to have a job working with plants, people and their passions. Even if you want a low maintenance garden and plants terrify you, we can make the garden look stunning and work with you for years to come, making your dreams come true. I hope, if nothing else, my passion for gardens has come through in my column each month. I’ve been doing this for a long time now and I so truly believe in the professionalism of our industry. Thank you to all of you who have read this page in the magazine. I feel like I know you when I write each month. At first I thought only my Mum read it, but then I would bump into people who would tell me that they like reading it and that was a lovely feeling. Please keep in touch. If you ever have any garden queries, you can email me at any time and I’ll help wherever I can. Good luck with your gardens too. It’s nice to know that we all share that same passion for growing something wonderful. Louisa x

Mopping up Spring Cleaning has never been so easy! Are you (or your teenagers!) planning a party but can't face the thought of the morning after clean up? Does the inside of your oven resemble a coal mine? Or are you just too busy to get down to the thousand and one tasks needed to keep your home in tip top condition? Help is at hand in the form of Miss Mop, a domestic cleaning company operating in and around Billingshurst, Storrington, Pulborough and Petworth. Proprietor Debi Jones (above, right) started her company from scratch in the Autumn of 2009 when she decided that she wanted to run a business whilst maintaining her commitment to her family and the demands of her lively toddler, Megan. Miss Mop is dedicated to providing a high quality service from thoroughly reliable and trustworthy cleaners. As every home is different, Debi visits her customers initially to assess their requirements. She pays close attention to the individual demands of her customers maintaining constant contact to ensure that they are completely satisfied. Her cleaners are interviewed
in their own homes and carefully vetted before being accepted and she takes great care in matching each cleaner to the client's needs and lifestyle. The growth of her company is proof that this combination leads to success as Miss Mop now supplies a regular service to around 100 customers. As well as regular domestic cleaning for £13 per hour, Miss Mop can arrange for major spring cleans, end of tenancy cleaning or tackling the mess left after the builders have been in and all for between £13 and £15 per hour. Her cleaners will undertake any aspect of domestic chores, including ironing, laundry, window cleaning or sorting out cupboards – you only have to ask! Judging from the messages of appreciation from satisfied customers, the Miss Mop cleaners are heaven-sent. www.missmopdomesticcleaning.co.u www.missmopdomesticcleaning.co.uk g.co.uk

Take the Downs Link Challenge! This annual bike ride of up to 30 miles across the stunning scenery of the Sussex Downs is a great, family friendly event. This year the ride starts at Bramber Castle at 8am on Saturday 21st May. Cycling is a great form of exercise, and there are lots of health benefits associated with regular cycling. Your cardiovascular fitness will improve and this means you’ll lower your risk of heart attack and stroke. On average, 350 calories an hour are burned off during leisure cycling so it’s a good way to lose weight. Pedalling is low impact, so you can improve muscle tone without stressing your knee and ankle joints. The Downs Link Challenge has the advantage of being mainly off road, following the route along the old dismantled railway line between Bramber and Christ’s Hospital. The countryside is beautiful and the wildlife is plentiful. The Downs Link Challenge has raised over £30,000 so far for Chestnut Tree House, the only hospice for children in Sussex. Every penny is vital to this valuable service so, get on your bike and see us on 21st May 2011!

anterbury’s skyline is dominated by the stunning cathedral, the oldest in England with its origins dating back to 597 AD when St Augustine established his seat in Canterbury.
“Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?” The best known event in the Cathedral's history was the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170. When Becket was made Archbishop of Canterbury by King Henry II in 1162, he changed his allegiance from the King to the Pope and the Church. Henry had expected his full support, and there were many conflicts between them, the final one being Thomas Beckets' excommunication of the Archbishop of York and the Bishops of London and Salisbury. In 1170, King Henry had his son crowned as his heir by these and other bishops, usurping a long standing right of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Four knights, overheard the King's rage and took seriously his shout of "Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?" On 29 December 1170 Thomas Becket was persuaded to enter the Cathedral through the Cloisters and into the North West Transept. Vespers was in progress when the knights burst in, and found Thomas kneeling at the altar. According to Edward Grim, a monk who watched the murder, Thomas refused to absolve the Bishops and told the Knights that "for the name of Jesus and the protection of the Church, I am ready to embrace death." It was not long before he did so. The knights wielded their weapons and administered three mighty blows, the last one breaking off the tip of a sword. Three days after his death, there began a series of miracles attached to his martyrdom. These are depicted in the miracle windows of the Trinity Chapel. In 1173, Becket was canonized by Pope Alexander III. Pilgrims began to flock to Beckets' shrine in the Cathedral; a year later Henry, in sackcloth, walking barefoot, was among them. Canterbury has been a place of pilgrimage for thousands of people ever since as famously told by Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.
