Happy birthday to us... Did you know that next year Sutton Centre for the Voluntary Sector will be celebrating its 50th birthday?
To help us mark the occassion we want to talk to anyone that remembers the organisation when it was first set up in 1965. You may have worked for SCVS when it was first formed, or been working for one of Sutton's Voluntary organisations supported by SCVS. Maybe you were our next door neighbours when we first opened. Whatever the reason you remember us, we want to hear from you and we're after any photos you may have, and most importantly, your memories! We'd also love to talk to anyone that remembers SCVS in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s - if that's you, get in touch! You can call us on 020 8644 2867 or email info@suttoncvs.org.uk.

Supporters go nuts On Sat 30th Aug, 22 of Sutton Mencap's supporters got very muddy for them completing The Nuts Challenge.
The challenge wass to complete a 7km muddy assault course which included over 100 obstacles with names like Hell River, Kamikaze and Rats Tunnel! Everyone stepped out of their comfort zone and worked hard to make it round. The girls stuck together and finished in just over 4 hrs, the boys were... quite a bit quicker! Congratulations also to Jason and Farley who also completed the Junior 1km course. The team would like to thank everyone who has sponsored them as knowing they have raised approx ÂŁ2.5k is helping with the aches and pains. On the Scrapheap Sutton Mencap has had a very busy summer! Not only have they raised around £2,500 by taking part in a ’Go Nuts’ challenge (see page 5), their supporters have been busy making the most of a pile of rubbish… Sutton Mencap would like to say a big thank-you to everyone who has donated time, materials and
their talents to help them give our children’s playground a bit of TLC as part of their Scrapheap Challenge. Using mainly recycled/ donated materials and volunteer time they have been able to create some great new play stations which have made a huge difference to the area. Most resources came from a community re-paint scheme, freecycle and supporters homes it’s amazing what you can do with a bit of guttering and some imagination!
Thanks to Doug Jackson from Norden Plumbing for donating plumbing materials for our water play station and to Shane for putting it together.
The new play stations were a big hit over the summer with the children who have loved their new look playground.
Meet the interactive sensory robot created using all sorts including a sausage roller for a neck, a bell for a nose and brushes for eyes!
A team of girls from Overton Grange made a huge contribution to the project. They nominated Sutton Mencap as their charity for a Youth & Philanthropy Project at school and won a competition which awarded the charity a grant of £3000. Some of this money has been used for this project and the team have remained involved by helping to create some of the scrapheap masterpieces.

technology Issuu If you’d like to produce a newsletter that looks more like a printed magazine, Issuu is a good site to look at. It will take your pdfs and turn them into pretty page turning publications (like this Networker) for free. Like Mailchimp you can see how many people are looking at your publication and which pages they are spending most time reading – really useful when planning future editions!
Bit.ly In a nutshell Bit.ly makes really long web addresses, short. Very handy when you’re restricted by the amount of characters you can use in a message, like on Twitter, or when you only have a little bit of space on a poster. What’s also great about Bit.ly is that it stores your short URLS and then tells you how many people clicked on each link, and where they are clicking through from (for example, facebook, twitter etc) www.bitly.com
Hootsuite Do you have several social media accounts you are trying to keep tabs on for your organisation? Using hootsuite you can tweet and post on Facebook all from one place. fundraising
Christmas is coming...
..time to think about your online fundraising
We know you don’t really want to talk about Christmas in September, but for charities it is the most important time of the year for fundraising, and doubling your fundraising efforts in December can really pay off. Recent research by Blackbaud, the software and services firm for charities and not-for-profits suggested that many charities were receiving a large majority of their online donations in the run up to Christmas. In 2010, November and December represented on average 32% of an organisation’s total annual online donations. By 2013 this had risen to 39% of the annual total for the year.
page10
Blackbaud’s analysis also showed that the average online gift in December 2013 was £64.10, an increase of 14% from £56.27 in December 2010. So how do you make the most of people’s generosity over the festive season? Like any good campaign, you need to start thinking about your festive fundraising a few months in advance… so round about… now!
Get social If you don’t already have a social media presence for your charity or organisation, now is a great time to think about getting one. No need to sign up to every social media channel just now - get yourselves on Twitter and Facebook and that’s a great start. Then use the next couple of months to build up your followers

Make it easy for people to donate
Send out Christmas cards
Make sure it is easy for them to donate online. Register with an established online giving site and then make sure that your ‘donate’ button is on every page of your website, linking through to a page where people can donate. Direct people to your donations page from social media – Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and whatever other platforms you are on. Then ask them to share your post – the more people see it, the more money you can potentially raise.
Paying for lots of Christmas cards and putting stamps on them all to send to all your supporters and volunteers can be expensive. Instead, why not send them an email Christmas card using a programme such as Mailchimp (see pages 8-9). Tell your supporters what project you’ll be putting the money you have saved towards and they may feel they want to give a little gift to help your cause.
Be specific If you’re going to ask people for money, say how much you need, and what for – for example – ‘we need to raise £5000 to renovate our play area’ or ‘£20,000 will support one care worker for a year’. If you can break it down even further do – what will £5 or £10 get you? If people can visualise where their money is going, they will be more likely to donate.
Advertise your Christmas events We’re sure a lot of you are planning carol concerts, Christmas fairs and Santa’s grottos among other things to fundraise this Christmas. Make sure you promote them on social media. On Facebook you can even create events and then invite everyone you know, and ask them to invite all their friends too! You could even make a funny video to invite people to your event, publish it on Vimeo or YouTube and then share the link on social media. People will often share things they have been part of or that have celebrities in - so if you can get hundreds of people involved or get a bit of celebrity endorsement it can help!
Round up 2014 The end of the year is also a great time to look back on what you have achieved over the last year and tell your supporters of your plans for 2015. Again, use an email newsletter to do this and you can add a ‘donate’ button to your newsletter linking people straight through to your online

donations page.
And finally… don’t forget to say thank you! Make sure that you say thank you to everyone donating to your cause. Say thank you now and they will feel valued and be more inclined to donate in the future. You can even use your thank you message as an opportunity to get them to sign up to your newsletter, or invite them to an event you are running.

Join the Sutton Time bank Do you have some time to give in exchange for some time from others? Share your skills and in return learn something new - all for free! Run by the Volunteer Centre Sutton, Sutton Shares is a local community that shares skills, time and experience to develop community cohesion. Individuals join the Sutton Shares timebank as members and then for every hour’s help they give to another (e.g. Spanish lesson, mending a gutter, web design) they receive one time credit which they can then spend to receive help from another member (e.g. leg waxing, bike fixing, zumba class). Exchanges don’t have to be a give-take scenario between two people; time banking is a cycle of exchanges that continues on with many time
bank members. Check out the website to see what’s on offer, or contact Matt Little, the Sutton Shares Timebanking Coordinator at mlittle@vcsutton.org.uk 020 8661 5926.
