DECLINATION
INCLINATION
With its two poles, North and South, the Earth is like a huge magnet. As a result of this polarity, the red end of the compass needle will always point to the magnetic pole, which is not the same as the geographic (true) pole. The angle between these two poles is called Declination.
The vertical intensity and direction of the Earth’s magnetic field, the inclination, influences the horizontal plane of the compass needle according to the latitude where it is used. Because of inclination, compasses must be balanced for the Northern and/or Southern Hemisphere.

DIRECTION ARROW
After you choose the direction from the map, the arrow shows which direction to go.
With the compass hanging around your neck, it’s always available when you need it. The snap lock makes it easy to detach the compass when determining the bearing from the map.
Map scales
CONTROL MARKING
These are round and triangular holes for making markings on the map. In sport orienteering they are essential.

LANYARD
THE CAPSULE
The capsule is oil filled to guarantee fast and smooth settling of the special steel needle, which is hung on a sharp pivot. All Suunto compasses feature the jewel bearing system, which lengthens the lifetime of the compass, as the needle moves freely. In all Suunto field compass capsules there are also North-South lines marked with two colors, red indicating North.

MAP SCALES
The base plate features hot-stamped scales, which correspond to map scales. These measure the distances from the map. 1:10,000 = 1 cm on the map is 10,000 cm / 100 m on the ground. 1:24,000 = one inch on the map is 24,000 inches (2,000 feet) on the ground.
