Introduction CDEM commissioned Ohana Writing Services to undertake a tourism asset inventory of identified rural communities in Manitoba in the Summer and Fall of 2019. A tourism asset inventory template was created utilizing references from the Manitoba Tourism Education Council template, the Medicine Hat Tourism Asset Inventory Template, and Tourism BC Template. The template was utilized for each community visit and was standardized to capture common categories in the different community during the field visits and for reporting purposes.

La Chapelle Ste-Thérèse

In 1946 and 1947, many young Manitobans were affected by polio. Sister Marie-Joseph (Antoinette Bergeron), then principal of the local school, promised to set up a grotto in honor of the parish if it was spared from this epidemic. The youth of Lourdes were saved.

The Pioneers and Chanoinesses Museum The Pioneers Museum offers a great display of artifacts describing depicting life in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Learn about the first doctor, the first veterinarian and the founder of NotreDame-de-Lourdes. With models of the train station and a 1920’s kitchen, step into life from another time. Half of the museum is dedicated to the “Chanoinesses”, better known as “Les Soeurs du Sauveur”, an order of religious women who came from France to help establish our flourishing community.

Fort Maurepas A fieldstone cairn in the Sagkeeng First Nation, on the banks of the Winnipeg River, commemorates the former site of Fort Maurepas. Established by one of the sons of La Vérendrye between 1739 and 1749, after the abandonment of the original Fort Maurepas on the Red River, both the North West Company and the Hudson’s Bay Company built fur-trade posts in this area in 1792.

Community crosses

Davidson Barn

Three locations in La Broquerie where these crosses were used to mark important sites or events

The Manitoba Dairy Farms Limited was established south of Marchand, in the RM of La Broquerie, by American entrepreneur Watson P. Davidson.

Project des Lieux-Dits

In 1909, he began to buy land, eventually holding some 100,000 acres of marginal land previously considered unsuitable for agriculture.

Six historical plaques in the lobby of Hylife Center’s arena

Davidson purchased three “walking dredges” to dig 121 miles of ditches over a period of 15 years to drain the area, and constructed roads to access farmland. Over the next thirty years, he spent some $3,000,000 in land improvements.

St. Adolphe Roman Catholic Convent and the Miracle Room In 1922, a miracle was reported at the St. Adolphe Convent. Sister Julie Pauline, 42 years old, was sent to the convent by two physicians who diagnosed her with terminal tuberculous peritonitis. While Sister Pauline laid in pain, she prayed the novena: nine prayers a day for nine days. During the third novena, she awoke, miraculously cured, pain-free. The Vatican recognized her recovery as a miracle.

St. Adolphe Roman Catholic Church In front of the church, is a small monument for the centenary of the St. Adolphe Parish, celebrated in 1996. A cemetery is situated behind the church, and a convent stood immediately north of it. Ste. Agathe Roman Catholic Church

Saulteaux First Nation originally inhabited this region of the Seine River. Taché is on Treaty One Land. Notre-Dame-de-Lorette Church and Cemetery

The Crucifixion mural behind the altar, dated 1999, was created by Robert Freynet. Painting of the Holy Family, dated 1948, is by local artist Noella Gauthier-Yoeman. Cemetery dates from 1873.

Began in 1894 and opened in 1900. Renowned artist Louis Monty spent two years of his life, from 1900 to 1902, decorating the church with beautiful paintings. The first burial in an associated cemetery occurred in 1873.

Municipal Seal Significance La Municipalité de Taché, the original French name, was incorporated in 1880. The slogan – “Fluctuat Nec Demergatur is the latin phrase meaning “tossed by the waves, may she not sink”, a phrase echoed by the image of a ship’s anchor, signifying stability and Faith. The Taché logo is a big fishing anchor, an unlikely symbol in the middle of the prairies, but one that honours Monseigneur Taché’s birthplace. Kane’s/ Hamblin’s Barn Considered one of the largest barns in the province, was built in 1915 for American land developer John H. Kane as a demonstration farmstead to show new farmers how to work the predominantly clay-rich soils of the region. The large L-shaped barn originally housed cattle on the lowest level, horses on the second level, and hay storage on the third story or loft. St. Jean Convent The oldest rural convent in Manitoba, is a provincially designated historic site. It was

built between 1897 and 1898 on a design by architect J. A. Senecal. A replica of the grotto of Lourdes was erected in 1952. St. Jean Catholic Church and Grotto Was constructed in 1927, based on a design by Montreal architects Viau and Venne, to replace an earlier structure from 1877. A north wing was added in 1910 by the partnership of Senecal and J. A. Hudon. It served as a convent, girls’ school, and boarding facility before closing in 1992.

There was a battle by Fairford. The Ojibway teamed up with the Cree and pushed the Sioux back. There was a huge battle in a field near St. Laurent where they buried their dead. It is proof that the Sioux were here. The Canadian Government never signed treaties with the Sioux. Currently no signage.

École Théobald Museum

The Centre was built in 2004. It features four interactive galleries in both French and English: salamanders, wind power, birds, living green

The Theobald School District was founded in 1879 with the help of Father Theobald Bitsche, parish priest of St. Léon. Named for him, a one-room wood frame school operated on the northwest quarter of 9-5-9 west of the Principal Meridian on two acres of land donated by Edouard Labossière in the RM of Lorne.

Located by Round Lake, which is part of the Trans Canada Trail.

A new schoolhouse erected in 1918 was used continuously until 1959. After its closure, students in the area went to school in the town of St. Léon, either the Consolidated School No. 1425 or the Richard Consolidated School No. 1092. The former school building was moved to a museum in St. Léon. A monument commemorating it was erected on its original site on August 15th, 2004. GA L L E R I E S , C R A F T I NG OR WOR K S HOP S

The Crosses of St. Malo

In July 1896, with the help of some parishioners, Noret began working on the project. Brush was cleared and hollows were filled. A small chapel was constructed on the south bank of the river.

The Cross at the Louis Malo Pioneer Site, just north of St. Malo, is the most visible of the four.

By 1902, the chapel was replaced by an actual grotto built with fieldstones from the area. Noret, working with David Morin and Léger Lambert, completed the stone walls and the niche of the Madonna.

The large crosses that define historic entry points in the region.

Desrosier Farm House

Monument to commemorate 75 years of the founding of Caisse Populaire (a credit union now called Caisse Groupe Financier)

The Desrosier Farm House in St. Malo, features several of the new trends in largescale buildings in rural Manitoba at the time.

St. Malo Dam

It is known as a Four-square. The house is large and spacious and its style reflects its square plan and box-like form. Like other houses of its type, the Desrosier house features a large pyramidal roof with gabled dormers that allow light into the attic.

Functioning dam that controls water levels in St. Malo Lake. Built by the Prairie RE La Fournaise Log Home Built in 1872, the La Fournaise House is one of the oldest buildings in the area, and a rare surviving connection to the area’s pioneer roots. Its construction of oak logs, locally cut, reveals early architectural forms and building technologies. Its construction by Gabriel La Fournaise, who married a local Cree woman, is a vital expression of Métis culture in the area. In recent times, the house was carefully dismantled, the logs marked, and then in 1978 reassembled and set it in an oak stand on the property. The Maynard House A good example of an L-shaped plan with intersecting gambrel roofs.

S T. M A L O

H E R I TAG E S I T E S

The construction of the walls of the house reflects an interesting aspect of Manitoba’s architectural history from this period. Built with formed concrete blocks, from a distance, the walls give the appearance of a grand stone building. The use of formed concrete blocks, also called “imitation stone,” was fairly popular technology between 1890 to 1910. Wooden Silos The Roger Dandenault Barn and Silo on Rat River Drive in the R.M. of De Salaberry, shows the traditional gable-roofed barn and in the background the new gambrelroofed barn so popular with farmers in the early decades of the 20th century. There are three such barns and silos in De Salaberry: Rat River Drive, Curé Farm and Turenne Farm. In 1943, Hector Dandenault and Joseph Curé put up an impressive wooden silo at the Dandenault Farm.

Wooden Silos Used to store corn for the dairy operation. This kind of construction required careful attention to detail and a definite comfort with heights. The Turenne Farm Silo, built in 1935, is the oldest of three remaining wooden silos in the R.M. of De Salaberry, and only one of a handful of the traditional wooden silos that still stand in Manitoba. Built for Theophile Turenne and his son Philippe, this evocative farm building was used to store corn, a staple in any area of dairy farming. Like the other De Salaberry silos, the Turenne structure is a very good example of a building technology thought to have been imported from Wisconsin, the heartland of dairy and cheese production in North America. In this version, called the Scantling type, unsheathed walls are formed with overlapping 4”x4” timbers that are about six feet on each of the eight sides and which soar about 40 feet high. Rat River Farms This plain-looking barn from 1950 is possibly the first facility in Western Canada to be associated with artificial insemination, an important development in agricultural technology. Between 1950-62, on Émile Hébert’s farm, Holstein bulls owned by both federal and provincial departments of agriculture were

126

T O U R I S M A S S E T S I N V E N T O RY

housed to collect semen, which was then tested, stored in vials and packed in dry ice for shipping. Pankiw Honeyland Farms Honeyland Farms (also known as the Pankiw Honeybee Farm), established in 1920, was one of the first commercial honey operations in Western Canada. It features a distinctive round bee storage building (from 1936) as well as several other structures, including a building where honey was extracted. Roblin Barn Roblin Farm 1929 – these words appear on a wooden sign on a barn in the Dufrost area. It designates the family home of two notable politicians, both Manitoba premiers: Rodmond and Duff Roblin.
