Pedro becomes CapTain America 4 KIDS The world of line dancing is full of talented, innovative and amazing characters. One of these is Pedro Machado. A stalwart amongst line dancers he is a renowned choreographer and in 1997, 1998 and 1999 he achieved becoming World's Line Dance Champion in the Showcase, Renegade and Superstars Divisions. Apart from these accolades, Pedro has gone the extra mile and is very committed to his fund raising activities, raising money for the charity SuperHeroes4kids. He can frequently be seen dressed as his alter-ego 'Captain America', travelling around entertaining both young and old with his huge personality.

Inspired by the late 'Baltimore Batman' Lenny B Robinson, Pedro Machado strives to bring happiness to children becoming Captain America as part of his new charitable venture SuperHeores4kids.

We asked Pedro how he became involved in his fund raising activities. He told us that he was inspired by Lenny B Robinson who was known as the 'Baltimore Batman.' Sadly Lenny was tragically killed in a car accident in August of this year. He was a remarkable man who visited sick children in hospitals dressed in full Batman costume whilst distributing toys and memorabilia to the children. Pedro says that he wanted to be involved in doing this type of charity work and, as a result, 'Captain America' was born. Pedro has been extremely busy and has been involved with many charities, one has been Dream Flight, which enables seriously ill, or disabled children, to have a holiday of a lifetime in Florida. It seems that Captain America's feet are hardly touching the ground due to his fund raising and line dancing commitments.

This weekend Pedro tells us he is in Spain presenting a Choreography show. In March of 2016 he flies out to Malaysia and then goes to Singapore in April for LDF fund raising. In May he is travelling to Australia. What a globetrotter this man is! Truly a super-hero

Pedro told us that he is eager to get more bookings and says, 'No goals, no glory.' Back in the United Kingdom, he is just as busy. He is based in Leeds and back in November was involved in a campaign to get people to donate blood. He has recently toured Scotland with fellow super-hero 'Iron Man', and some classes have been lucky to have been able to see the super-heroes in action on the dance floor. At the present time, Pedro is doing a mini tour of Essex and Kent. After all this touring Captain America will top things off by attending Christmas parties at Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, The Royal Marsden Hospital and a hospice Pedro told us that, at the moment, everyone is pitching in and local classes, such as Jean Webb's in Blackpool, have been busy collecting and wrapping toys ready for distribution. Always eager to raise funds, Pedro says that 'if ever a time was needed for a kids' hero....it's now.' If you are interested in finding out more about Pedro and his fund raising work, visit SH4K.ORG or http://www.gofundme.com/CaptainAmerica4Kid. Keep up the good work Captain America.

TERESA & VERA

The Only Way Is Essex for Teresa & Vera, our well known and well loved duo. Where were you born? Vera and I were both born in Plaistow, East London Where do you live now? Vera lives in Brentwood, Essex and I live in Laindon, Essex How old were you when you started dancing: Vera was aged 38 and I started when I was 28. The classes that Vera attended were mine. How did you come across line dancing: Through my aerobic instructor. He started going to one in Essex called JD’s. Vera saw an advert in the local paper. I started teaching 20 years ago and Vera 19 years ago. We are IDTA qualified instructors.

, I had started private lCHOREOGRAPHERS, DANCERS & TEACHERS TERESA & VERA TALK TO LOVE2LINE sons and competed in

When did you first begin choreographing dances? My first was in 1999 What was your first dance? ‘A Touch Of Heaven’ was the first, to Gloria Estefan. My second was Quando

Of all your dances, which one makes you the proudest? We are proud of all of them as they mean different things to us. Some were written to raise money for charity such as ‘I’m Already There.’ Others were gifts to people to celebrate special occasions like wedding anniversaries such as ‘I Said I Love You.’ Mainly though it is the music that inspires us to choreograph. Are there any new dances in the pipeline? Not at the moment but we will certainly let you know the next one LOL Where does your inspiration for choreographing dances come from? From the music and the words of the song. Then we choose a level that we think would suit it most. We both have a wide selection of musical tastes. We see you like to have lots of fun in line dancing. Yes we hold three weekends a year and really love doing them. We decorate the hall and make everything look as perfect as we can. We enjoy having fun, just like one big family. We do promote anything that’s going on and never found it to be an issue. Why not support what we all enjoy doing. People will always choose what classes and when they can go to suit them. It is good that they have the knowledge to be able to do this.

Has your line dancing and choreography taken you to any places, countries and who have you met along the way? We have been so very lucky as we have met so many people who all enjoy the same thing. We have been to Australia, Spain, Tenerife and all over the U.K. We have had such a good time with everyone.

What are your future aspirations in dance?

If you weren’t a dancer and choreographer, what would you be doing now? I would be back in medicine but would retrain as a nurse and Vera would return to being a driving instructor.

We would love to host a massive weekend to celebrate everything we have achieved over the years and have everyone there who we have taught. It would be amazing. We would like to thank everyone for their support and friendship. As a club, we raise money for charities and currently we are doing superheroes4kids, collecting toys for Pedro to give out to children in hospices and hospitals all over the U.K. We have arranged for him to attend Great Ormond Street Hospital with over 2000 people attending and also Little Havens Hospice in Rayleigh. It is such a superb charity and every toy puts a smile on a child’s face. We always like to do our bit but we also do it as a club and that means everything to us

The ancient Christmas tree had seen better days. Most of the branches had been broken off. Chipped baubles and faded tinsel hung limply, whilst the poor Christmas angel had lost both wings and her halo had slipped down over her face.

Coffee Break Fiction This month’s Love2Line is a bumper issue combining November and December. Because of this, in this month’s issue there is an extra fiction special. For this story I was inspired by the title of the very popular line dance Black Magic, choreographed by Alison Biggs and Peter Metelnick. Find out why Emily is so frightened of taking part in the office Secret Santa. I usually say, sit down with a cup of coffee and a biscuit but as it’s Christmas, why not put your feet up with a glass of wine or sherry and a mince pie and enjoy the story.

Black Magic The office Christmas party was in full swing. Raucous laughter and excited voices rang round the, normally, quiet office. Music blared loudly.

Emily sat at her desk sipping a glass of cheap, vinegary tasting, wine. She smiled at the antics of her colleagues as alcohol and festive spirit unleashed their inner demons. Office lothario, Ross Miller, had disappeared into the stationery cupboard with blonde siren Becky Jones. Emily hoped they were careful, as Becky was the latest squeeze of the boss, Tony Bird, or Big Bird as he was called behind his back. Katy, the young office junior was sitting in the corner crying. She had thrown up three times in the ladies and was being comforted by Madge, the office matriarch. Emily wasn’t a party person but Big Bird had insisted on everyone attending. He called it team building. As Emily looked at her rowdy colleagues she thought it was more like team destruction. Just then the music was turned down and a booming voice echoed round the room. “Right folks. It’s Secret Santa time.” Everyone cheered enthusiastically. Emily stiffened. This was what she was dreading. She refused to take part in the Secret Santa. Her colleagues thought her odd and mean spirited but they didn’t understand. How could they? She watched as gifts were exchanged. Paper, and colourful bows littered the room. Emily sighed. This time of year was difficult. It had been for years.

Suddenly something was thrust into Emily’s hands. She was taken by surprise and gasped in horror as she saw that she was holding a gailywrapped box. Looking up she saw the smiling face of office temp Hayley. “I know you don’t like all this Secret Santa stuff but you’ve been so kind to me since I started here that I got you this gift as a thank you.” Emily opened her mouth to speak but the room started to shake and everything went hazy. She found herself in a street. It was dark and people were pouring out of a nightclub, laughing and in high spirits. Christmas lights twinkled and people were singing Auld Lang Syne. Hayley was there with friends. They started crossing the road to the taxi rank but when they were halfway across, a car hurtled round the corner. It ploughed into Hayley throwing her into the air like a rag doll. “Are you okay?” Hayley’s concerned voice brought Emily round. “You’ve gone white.” Emily grabbed Hayley’s arm. “Don’t go out on New Year’s Eve. If you do, take extra care crossing roads. Do you hear me?” Hayley looked scared. “I don’t understand. Are you drunk?” She shook herself free and ran back to her friends. Looking at the gift in her hands Emily remembered the Christmas when she was aged 12. Her mother had given her a parcel; it was wrapped in gold paper with a red ribbon. Emily eagerly started to open it but her mother stopped her. “This is a special gift handed down in our family for generations. You, in turn must pass it down to your first-born child.

I feel that you are old enough now to receive it.” Emily excitedly opened the present but when she looked inside it was empty. She was puzzled. “There’s nothing in here.” Suddenly the room began to shake and everything went hazy. She was in a hospital ward and was shocked to see her mother lying in bed. She was deathly pale and very thin, just skin and bone. A doctor was standing at the side of the bed. “She’s gone”, he said to the nurse next to him. Emily felt herself trembling and her mother’s voice brought her out of the nightmare. “The gift is seeing the future. It only happens if someone gives you a present. Sometimes the things we see are good but unfortunately, mostly, we usually foresee death. If possible we must warn people but in most cases they do not listen and think we are strange. The gift can be a curse but it is our family’s heritage and we can’t change it. Just use the gift wisely child.” An angry voice cut into Emily’s thoughts. It was Madge. “What’s wrong with you? You’ve scared the life out of Hayley. Look I’ve heard about you and your weird visions. You need help. Leave her alone, okay?” Madge stormed off. Emily sighed. The gift was a curse. People thought she was weird. A long time ago she had made a decision not to have children. Being the last surviving member of her family, Emily decided the gift and its curse would die with her. She raised her glass to the motto pinned on her wall which read, “It is better to give than to receive.”

LOVE2LINE COFFEE BREAK FICTION

In this month's Love2Line coffee break fiction spot I have decided to write something a little different. Instead of a short story I have written two poems. As we celebrated Bonfire Night on the 5th I have kept the firework theme. The first poem is a humorous take on Guy Fawkes and what I believe the poor man thinks every year when he is unceremoniously chucked on the top of a bonfire. The title is influenced by the very popular dance My Guy, choreographed by Julie Lockton to the music 'My Guy' sung by Mary Wells.

So why must I continue to suffer every year, this ritual degradation, I feel is so severe?

I'm taken all around the streets, people donate money. Squashed up in a wooden cart I don't find very funny. Last year was appalling, caused me much MY GUY distress. They couldn't find men's clothing so put God's bones, that time of year again, I really me in a dress. hate this night, stuck up on a bonfire, before I'm set alight. It wasn't all my fault you know, others This treatment is unwarranted and played a part. certainly not fun. Yet I'm the one remembered as a traitor It really is unpleasant with branches up my and blackheart. bum. Bad things you hear about me, none of it is true. I paid my dues so long ago when death to They had to find a scapegoat and anyone me was ordered. would do. To tell the truth it isn't nice to be hung, drawn and quartered. So when you make my effigy, I hope you will take care. Please make me look respectable, dashing, debonair. No rockets up my backside to send me way up high. Just remember something, I'm a decent kind of Guy.

Poor old Guy Fawkes, November 5th is definitely not his night. My second poem is more serious and I got the inspiration from watching a harrowing news report on television one night. It has a firework, fire theme but not in a good way. It also has a twist in the ending. The title comes from the line dance 'Fly High' choreographed by Maggie Gallagher to the music 'Let Me Go' sung by Gary Barlow. FLY HIGH Explosions rocked the city one sultry, summer night. Sparks, like jewels, showered down as buildings set alight. The missile, Satan's firework, was accurate and cruel, no mercy did it show to either hospital or school. He gazed down at the mayhem, sadly shook his head. Watched them tend the wounded; mourn over their dead. He heard the women sobbing, men's angry helpless cries. It seemed that hell had come to earth, as fires leapt to the skies. Fear gripped his body tightly, chilled him to the bone. There was no safety anymore in this place once called home. It wasn't wise to stay here and raise a

Time to go and start again a peaceful happy life away from this cruel city full of endless strife. As fires raged all around him, his heart was filled with grief. The little bird flew to his nest to tell his mate to leave. Hope you enjoyed the two poems and that I caught you out with the ending in the second one. The news report I saw showed a pigeon on a roof staring down on the devastation caused by a bomb that had fallen. It was a touching thing to see. Until next month Ellvie x

Dance Reviews Big Blue Tree

Painkiller

32 Count 4 Wall Beginner

64 Count 4 Wall Intermediate

Music: "Big Blue Tree" by Michael English

Music: "Painkiller" by Jason Derulo (Feat. Meghan Trainor)

Choreographer:Ria Vos

Choreographer:Robbie McGowan Hickie

This dance should be very popular because there are no tags and restarts. The choreography is not too challenging, therefore it is a dance that is achievable for most levels. The music is catchy and in our class we found ourselves singing 'Hi De Hi, Ho De Ho,' as in one part, the music resembles the theme tune of the comedy show 'Hi De Hi'.

Okay this dance is not for the faint hearted but what a great dance it is. Right from the start the music makes you want to get out on that dance floor. The choreography is interesting and in line dancing it is always good to have a challenge. All the turns and directions do make it tricky but it is well worth persevering with it

64 Count 2 Wall Intermediate

64 Count 4 Wall Improver

Music: "Always On My Mind" by Big Ali Feat. Mohamed Lamine

Music: "Only You" by Anderson East

Choreographer:Daniel Whittaker & Simon Ward

This has to be one of my favourite dances at the moment. The music is great, eastern influenced mixed in with hip hop - it's certainly different. The choreography is interesting and certainly not too challenging and so it is a dance that could appeal to many levels. Let's hope that we see more dances on the floor doing this one.

Choreographer: Robbie McGowan Hickie

This dance seems to becoming very popular and I notice quite a few local clubs have already learnt it. There are some lovely steps in the choreography. I particularly like the side behind step with a dip - very elegant. There is only one bridge in the dance which comes on wall 4, this can be a bit tricky to remember at first but you soon get used to it and I think it is a nice touch in the dance. The music is good and makes you want to sing along.

A FUN WEEKEND AT TIFFANY'S HOTEL WITH

I was privileged to attend a Christmas Masquerade Ball event in Blackpool at Hotel Tiffany's at the weekend organised by Myra and Sarah, who run The Broken Heelz club / classes from Swinton. This was an excellent weekend reason being, from start to finish it was such a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. everyone seemed to be having a fabulous time all I saw all weekend was smiley faces!!

Sarah was our DJ for the night we all know what a hard job this can be, keeping everyone happy with their requests and she had enough requests to last a week I'm sure, but she managed to keep the floor full all night. Saturday morning up for breakfast again good quality food & service from staff not an easy job 100 people at one time !! Around 11-am we started our first Workshop with social dancing till 1-00pm First to teach was Myra who taught Neville and Julie's 'Boy Girl Thing' an easy level dance for everyone to manage .

On arrival a Champagne reception was offered if you wanted to partake, then off to rooms to get ready for our first excellent 5 course dinner. The hotel staff were all so pleasant and couldn't do enough to help, even catering for our gluten free friend. After dinner the evening social started around 8-00pm until midnight. Second was Val O'Connor who did a great job teaching her new dance Take Back, an easy Intermediate dance. She also gave an alternative track to the dance. Third dance taught was from Sarah, who taught Maggie Gallagher's Intermediate dance Second Hand Heart which again was well received.

MYRA & SARAH BY JULIE CARR After our workshop , we all have some free time do do our own thing. I'm sure some slept but we ventured out into Blackpool ( blown to bits) , but we had great fun Christmas shopping and lunch. Saturday evening greeted us with a Christmas Dinner followed by Myra and Sarah 's Masquerade Ball The five course Dinner was excellent with a gift for everyone from Santa . I thought this was such a generous thought from our hosts. 100 gifts takes some doing !! Social started around 8-00pm. What a night! Many dancers dressed up, some amusing some glamourous but this all added to the fabulous atmosphere and another great night of dancing.

Sunday morning we were up early for another delicious breakfast before attending our second workshop of the weekend which was a revision of the dances taught on Saturday along with plenty social dancing. By 1pm it was time to say goodbye but not before booking for next year November 25th-27th. We can't wait!

Here are our Hot picks and recommended dances for the month. This month we have split the scripts into levels to make it easy for you to choose a dance.

The One That Got Away Ellvie’s Escapees - Teacher & Dancer for over 20 years, she shares her passion for line dancing and finds hidden gems long since forgotten or never discovered.

No doubt some of you attended bonfires on the 5th November, and with this in mind, this month's 'one that got away' has the appropriate title' 'Without Fire.' This is a 64 count, 4 wall, intermediate level dance, choreographed by KarlHarry Winson to the music, 'No Smoke' sung by Michelle Lawson. It is quite a recent dance from 2012 but apart from dancing it at one of the classes I go to it seems to have, regrettably, dropped into outer space. Why do I like this dance? Well first of all the music is great, very catchy and it has a really strong beat which is always a winner in any dance. Karl has choreographed some lovely steps which fit in so well with the music. I particularly love the side hold, ball hold touch and the step kick, step points.

The choreography lends itself to those of us who like to put in extra flourishes such as shimmy's and hip shaking. There is only one restart to worry about, which is an added bonus. It is a great pity that this dance has disappeared because with the great choreography and brilliant music, what more could a dancer ask for? Again, I have had to resort to doing this dance in my lounge, so come on teachers, get this lovely dance revived and dancers, pester your lovely teachers to do this at your classes. Happy dancing. Ellvie

As with all new ventures it is a case of trial and error and ironing out teething problems. We hope that our magazine will entertain you and help maintain your passion for line dancing. We would love to hear from you about your line dancing experiences. Tell us how you got started. How do your family and friends feel about your dancing or do they share it with you? Have you been on any dancing holidays and would like to share your memories and adventures? Have you any questions that other line dancers may be able to help with?

This magazine is for you so don’t be shy, we would love to hear from you.
