LOVE2LINE MEETS ESMERALDA VAN DE POL Ive always beein into fighting sports I started with Karate, after that I did Aikido and Samurai all from being a child. I never dreamed that I would come to enjoy dancing but at the age of 33 I did just that and started to dance. Now it's a real passion and wish I had started years ago. But i completely intend to make up for it by enjoying every dance class, social and event.

Love2Line gets to know Esmeralda Van De Pol Dance Instructor and Choreographer talks to us about her love of dance and passion for choreogrpahy

I begrudgingly went to a line dance class with my parents when they invited me one day and i never thought for a minute that i would enjoy it. How wrong could I be. For once I started I never stopped!

I had so much fun every week I could not wait to go. Then my daughter started coming with us and she wanted to attend more than one calss a week so we searched for more classes in the local area.

This was more modern line dancing and I enjoyed it just as much if not more. My daughter quit when she met her boyfriend but not me ! After five years I was given the opportunity of running a dance class but that was 45 minutes drive away from my home. I later started up a group in my home town and that became Esmeralda-Dancers. I choreograph to music that 'grabs me' but I started choreographing 6 years ago sometimes songs give me goosepimples and my first dance was 'when love takes but I can't write to those as I am too over' Its strange to watch this back as distracted and 'dream away.'. it seems so long ago. Every year in November I host an event where I mix live music and DJ. My next years event I have Natalie Thurlow coming over. I also have regular socials bi monthly on a Saturday.

The dance Im most proud of to date is “ Freaky” I won with this one, dance of the year, at another club in Holland. And “Waka Waka 2010” this was a song for the World Cup Soccer. I got a nomination for this one, as improver dance of the year in Las Vegas

Line Dancing has shaped my life. I met my partner on the dance floor 10 years ago and we are still very happy and my two best friends Audrey and Ilona I also met on the dance floor. Through curiosity and passion you want do more, and go to different countries and I have been fortunate to go to England and Spain where I have met some great people. Don’t have to manyaspirations for the future just to enjoy the moment wherever i may be and appreciate every opportunity I get in life. My motto above all is to 'be yourself'

WELL I NEVER This is our little spot for you linedancers who have a passion for trivia. Maybe you love taking part in pub quizzes. Here at Love2Line we just find trivia fascinating and isn't it great learning something new every day? Here we go then with our fascinating facts:1. . Arachibutyrophobia is the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth - (Ellvie says - ah yes but it is so good with jam on a butty)

2. 50% of today's 13 - 19 year olds have never written a letter. - (Ellvie says and therefore will never have had the dubious pleasure of licking a stamp.)

3. 2 hours and 13 minutes is reckoned to be the amount of time we spend thinking about food every day, whether planning what to eat or whether we want that second chocolate biscuit. (Ellvie says errrrrm I think about chocolate more than 2 hours 13 minutes and that's for sure)

4. 3,400 passengers will be able to sail the oceans in Edwardian luxury when Titanic II, an almost exact replica of the doomed original, launches in 2018. (Ellvie says - let's hope they stay away from ice-bergs)

5. The Ghost Train at Blackpool Pleasure Beach is said to be haunted by a real ghost called Cloggy. (Ellvie says - wonder how you know if it is a real ghost?) 6. 7-Up was originally sold as Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda. (Ellvie says - Wow I'm glad I don't have to go in a shop and ask for that!) 7. Edward Jones broke into Buckingham Palace and stole Queen Victoria's underwear in 1838 (Ellvie says - Oh dear, I bet she was NOT amused!) Hope you enjoyed our fascinating facts. Make sure you read our next issue for more facts to make you go 'well I never.'

LINE DANCE EVENTS & HOLIDAYS This event that we attended was with Karl & Daniel. We actually booked on a 7 night package holiday and bought a weekend pass to the event. The event comprised of morning & afternoon workshops on Saturday & Sunday What better way than to combine your with Socials on both evenings. two passions, Line dancing and holidays, and even better if you can do it in the sun. Some of the Love2Line team attended one of Julie's Line dance events over in Benidorm last month. Here's what we found out! Julie started line dancing way back in 1996 in Dartford in the UK at Temple Hillbillies. It was there she took part in the ISTD Country n Western dance exams in bronze silver gold in 1999 and One of the evenings had an optional dress 2000. up theme with over 140 dancers in In 2003 she started her new life in Spain attendance. moving too Villajoyosa in Sept 2003. Julie has always had a passion for Line dancing and it has always played a large part in her life. Despite running her own business in Spain, Julie's first experience of events in Benidorm was when Alison & Peter came in 2011. Julie has worked with many choreographers in Benidorm Rob Dances taught at the event: Fowler, Willie Brown, Ria Vos, Craig Bennett, Daniel Whittaker and Karl Harry Pregunta (Karl, Daniel & Julie) Winson. Singing in the rain (Daniel) Take it off (Karl) Slip away (Karl & Daniel) A little love trip (Julie) Saturday night fever (Oldie recap) (Karl) Dirty Mind (Daniel) Rock on down (Karl) Pop that Lock (Karl)

Another of the benefits of attending a large line dance event is you get to meet up with people from all over the world. People that you have met online and now get a chance to meet in person. Benidorm is one of many line dance holiday destinations and whilst visiting you can find plenty more line dancing teaching and socials with Andrea & request dance nights with Paula.

Whilst Julie has many forthcoming events in Benidorm she is also providing short line dance breaks in the UK. A chance to take a break with your favourite choreographers.

Walking up to the couple the young salesman coughed discreetly. ‘Good morning, sir, madam. My name is Paul. May I help you?’ The woman turned to him and with long slender fingers started adjusting his tie. ‘Well, Paul.’ She purred. ‘That depends on what you are offering. ’

Coffee Break Fiction Welcome to Love2Line’s fiction corner where you can sit down, relax and enjoy reading a story inspired by the title of a line dance. 'One Shot' The young salesman watched the couple walk into the store. The woman looked to be in her early 40’s, slim, blonde and very attractive. Her partner looked younger, possibly late 20’s. Tattoos covered his well-developed biceps and his head was shaven. The salesman had no doubt that under his Metallica T-shirt he would have a well-defined six-pack. Definitely not the kind of man you would like to cross.

The young salesman’s cheeks reddened. He glanced anxiously at the woman’s partner noticing how he was clenching and unclenching his fists. Jumping back he stammered. ‘I….I’ll be over there if you need me.’ ‘Why do you have to keep doing that Jen? You know how jealous I get when you flirt with other guys.’ The woman laughed out loud. ‘Just keeping you on your toes babe. If you don’t come up to scratch I might have to trade you in for a younger model.’ She looked across at the salesman and winked, making him blush again. ‘Anyway, come on, we need to choose a new mattress.’ The man followed her, dragging his heels. ‘We don’t need a new mattress. It’s a waste of time and money. She turned round on him angrily. ‘For goodness sake, it’s like shopping with a child. Just be quiet and help me choose one.’ She found a bed and jumped on it, bouncing up and down. ‘I like this one, it’s really comfortable. Mmmm it’s memory foam, moulds itself to the shape of your body. Good for your back as well. ’ The man glared at the bed. ‘Our old mattress was really comfy. It had a lovely dent in the middle.’

She turned and looked at him with contempt. He really was thick. Sometimes she wondered why on earth she stayed with him. A smile played on her lips. He was good in bed; very good in fact. ‘Come on babe,’ she laughed. ‘Try out this mattress. After all you’re the one who’ll be bouncing around on it with me.’ A big grin appeared on his face and he leapt onto the mattress making her squeal. ‘You big dope.’ She laughed. ‘This is the one for us. I’ll just find that cute salesman. He can help us load it into the van.’ Half an hour later, the couple sat in their van enjoying a cigarette before their journey home. The man drummed his fingers on the steering wheel impatiently. ‘I still think it’s a waste of money buying a new mattress. I need some new gym equipment.’

‘For God’s sake Billy, just shut up. It’s your fault that we had to get rid of the old mattress in the first place. He turned to her sulkily. ‘We could have cleaned it up. Wouldn’t have shown under the sheet.’ She lost her temper and shouted at him. ‘If you had done the job properly we wouldn’t be having this conversation now. When I asked you to kill my husband, I meant for you to strangle him not to blast him at close range with a gun.’ She banged her fist down on the dashboard. ‘Did it not occur to you that once Dave is reported missing, the police will come round to mine sniffing around. I think I would have had a hard job explaining the extremely large blood stain on the mattress.’ She took a deep breath. ‘Now babe, this conversation is ended. Let’s go home and try out our new mattress.

SECRET DIARY OF A LINE DANCER

Like so many line-dancers, when there are no classes I get exercise withdrawal symptoms. Many dancers go to Yoga, Pilates, Zumba etc to top up their exercise regime. I did enroll at the local gym but often found myself next to a size 0, athletic looking girl in designer Lycra who hardly broke into a sweat. It didn’t help that the gym had wall to floor mirrors and when I caught sight of myself in baggy tracksuit, wild frizzy hair and a face redder than a chili pepper, I decided to bow out gracefully.

I didn’t have to worry about what I looked like. It didn’t matter that I wasn’t wearing designer gear. Hence, my first go on the cross-trainer found me dressed in a pair of big knickers that Bridget Jones would be proud of, plus an old vest that was well past its sell-by date. To complete my outfit, I wore some of my other half’s ancient socks that had holes in the toes and to keep my hair out of my face I had to wear my Snow White headband as I couldn’t find anything else. Okay, I guess you are trying to get this image out of your head. I know it wasn’t a good look but it was comfortable and that was the main thing.

I eagerly jumped on the cross-trainer but was careful to ensure I started slowly gradually speeding up. It wasn’t too long before I found myself on a roll, the calorie counter was whizzing round and the miles were clocking up. I had my headphones on listening to music on my mp3 player and was singing along at the top of my voice, which I couldn’t have done at the However, I did enjoy using the gym gym. equipment so I thought, if I can’t go to the gym, I will bring the gym to my Everything was going swimmingly until I house. With that in mind I went out heard an ominous cracking sound. I and purchased a cross trainer. It had wasn’t too worried; after all it was a new everything I wanted, calorie and step machine, what could possibly go wrong? counter, mile measurer, it even So I carried on at full pelt but then disaster registered your heart rate. In fact it struck. The machine suddenly began to did everything except talk! Perfect, disintegrate throwing me to the floor. A now I could exercise when I wanted, tangled mess of arms, legs and in the privacy of my own home. machinery.

If you’ve ever watched The Terminator where the metal robot morphs into a human, well that’s what I must have looked like. I called out for my better half. He came running when he heard the commotion, took one look at me lying on the floor, arms and legs stuck out at strange angles, Snow White headband now lying across my nose and said, ‘don’t move.’ Well that was an understatement wasn’t it? He flew out of the room with the speed of Usain Bolt and came back with, would you believe, a camera? “This is in case we need evidence,” he said. I cannot possibly repeat what my reply to him was but it did have something to do with inserting the camera where the sun doesn’t shine. Luckily I didn’t sustain any injuries, well, only to my pride. The offending machine was duly returned where it was found to have a faulty fitting. I never did get another cross-trainer. Instead I opted to purchase a rowing machine. I thought that it was a safer option being much nearer to the ground. I also make sure that I am dressed in my best bib and tucker when on my rower – just in case of emergencies you understand.

ANNUAL LINE DANCE FESTIVAL IN HOLLAND

On the 23rd and 24th January this year a huge line dancing event called the Western Experience came to Holland. It is the largest all round Country and Western Festival in Europe held at the conference centre Brabanthallen in the Netherlands. We have been fortunate to speak to Esmeralda Van de Pol who was involved in hiosting the event this year with Ria Vos.

They told us that this event has live music with bands coming from all over the world including the U.K. and America. There are two dance floors, one is a mixed floor and one for modern line dancers. This event is held every year around the same time and attracts over 20,000 people from all over europe, Germany, France, Sweden Denmark. The event kicks off on the Saturday from 10.30 am until 9 p.m. and on Sunday it is from 10.30 a.m. until 6 p.m. It is such a big event with loads going on. There are shows including Indian dance groups, lots of workshops, even a big hall with horses so there is something for everyone to enjoy even competitions to take part in. There are plenty of hotels in the area so no problems with accommodation for those who choose to attend this wonderful event. Esmeralda told us that this year she was involved and was asked to host the room with the modern line dancers. She hosted an joint workshop with choreographer Ria Vos and her partner helped out as D.J.

Here are some of the dances danced at the event : Catch & Release, Used, Supergirl, About Feelings, The Bite, Diva, Kizomba, Try Me, Water Under The Bridge, Ticket To The Blues, Ain't Misbehavin, Adorable, Hit The Base, Witness, Countrified Soul, La Gozadera, The Bomb, Get Up Get Down, Pop 'n Drop, Believe in Dreams, And Get It On, Love Me Like You Do, WTF, Alvaro, Your Loving Arms, I'm Ready For This, We Only ive Once, Battle Scars, Uptown Funk, Shades of Passion, Gypsy Girl, Ain't What U Do, Young Blood, If you fancy a holiday with a bit of dancing thrown in this event comes highly recommended. Dance Reviews Dancing Kizomba

Dirty Mind

32 Count 4 Wall Intermediate

64 Count 2 Wall Low Advanced

Music: "Dancing Kizomba" by Aliz Velix (Spanish Version)

Choreographer: Jose Miguel Belloque Vane(NL), David Hoyn(AU), Rebecca Lee (MY), Yeo Yu Puay(MY), Lily Iguchi(JP), Tomohiro Lizuka(JP), Sobrielo Philip Gene (SG

This is one of my favourite dances at the moment. 32 Counts no tags no restarts. The music really makes you want to move and you can add your own flare to the steps and body rolls. Labelled intermediate but I have also taught it to my mixed level class and everyone mastered it and enjoyed it. I love the simplicity yet effectiveness of this dance and I am sure it is going to be a big hit on the dance floo, I hope it does well.

Music: "Dirty Mind" by Flow Rida ft. Sam Martin

Choreographer: Daniel Whittaker

One of the most popular dances at out club at the moment. I learnt this in Benidorm with Daniel and I've taught it to all my intermediate classes. Nothing too tricky in the steps and thankfully it's 2 wall. Don't be put off by the Low Advanced label I am sure it is because of the 2x 16 count tags. These are quite fun and fit to the music really well and have not phased the class members at all. Give it a go you may love it! If you dont like the music first time persevere, my class tell me it's a 'grower' but I already love it!.

Young Stupid

64 Count 4 Wall Intermediate

Morocco 64 Count 2 Wall Intermediate Music:

Music: "Young & Stupid" by Travis Mills

Choreographer: Fred Whitehouse & Jose Miguel Belloque Vane

This seems to be a marmite dance but most of our dancers seem to like it. Some have said that the music takes a bit of getting used to. The choreography is great with some unusual steps. I particularly love the weave with the shoulder pop and step half flick and also the slide hold, ball cross step. There are no tags or restarts and so that is a bit of a relief. I must admit that I do like the music, it is very funky and the steps fit well with it. I really think this dance deserves to do well.

Choreographer:Alexis Strong (UK), Heather Barton(UK) and Rep Ghazali-Meaney (UK

This dance is popular with our dancers. It is quite fast so not a lot of time to think about what you are doing. However, there are no tags or restarts for you to worry about. Some really interesting steps in this dance, like the cross forward, side, hitch point side with a half sailor step. Quite fast but effective and looks good. The music is unusual as well with a haunting flutey sound at the beginning. Although the dance is fast, once you have learnt the steps it does become easier and so is worth persevering even if you feel you are floundering at first. Definitely a dance worth learning.

Here are our Hot picks and recommended dances for the month. This month we have split the scripts into levels to make it easy for you to choose a dance.

&

JASZMINE TAN I started dancing at the age of 11 years when I was in primary school At school, I pick up some cultural/ traditional dances such as Chinese, Malay, Indian, Spanish, Japanese etc & also enjoyed taking part in team performances. My dancing interest developed and I started to venture into modern dancing took part in a couple of team competitions and won a few prizes.

I was born and live in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Malaysia is a multi-racial, multi-cultural country with a population of about 30.4 million people.

I find line dancing quite interesting as it has various dance steps & genre ie country, cha cha, rumba, samba, waltz, night club, funky, pop etc. The best of all you do not need a partner to dance. One can dance according to the steps and flow with its lyrics or music together in a group. Thats how I best describe it and there is no better feeling.

I first discovered line dancing in 2001 in a local church hall. I guess that is similar for many people. I also started attending socials and found them lots of fun. I put a lot of time and effort into learning line dancing and I started teaching in 2004. My first choreography was in 2010 May and by 2011 I was competing in choreography competitions. Took part in the Asia Pacific Dance X'plosion Competition (APDX) Choreography competition and won a 2nd placing for dance "Don't Let Go of Me" in year 2015. I regularly organise and am invited to teach at several events during the year. My choreography can be found here

I'm so proud of my dance "I still love you" who got # 4 in Copperknob Most Popular list. It was choreographed to a Korean song. It's a pleasure to see dancers enjoying my dances. I like most genre of music but I prefer dancing to funky pop music.

The One That Got Away Ellvie’s Escapees - Teacher & Dancer for over 20 years, she shares her passion for line dancing and finds hidden gems long since forgotten or never discovered.

This month's 'one that got away' has to rate as one of my all time favourite dances and yet I never see it danced anywhere. 'Why not?', I cry as I shake my fist at the computer. Now I bet you are really curious to know what dance it is that has me so fired up. Well it is 'Hey Brother', a 64 count, 4- wall, intermediate level dance, choreographed by Gudrun Schneider and Martina Ecke. The music is 'Hey Brother' by Avicii which is also one of my favourite pieces of music ever and so the dance was in my good books even before I learnt it. I came across the dance by accident when I fell in love with the music and looked to see if a dance had been written to it. ‘Hey Brother’, actually became popular in our dance class and even now we occasionally do it but, as I have already pointed out, I have not seen it done anywhere else. Sacrilege

Yes, I agree it is not an easy dance being, what I would call busy, but to be honest, once you learn the sequence there is nothing there to catch you out. The choreography fits so well with the music that it really is a pleasure to dance. There are some lovely steps such as the point and point touch and heel switches and point turn followed by coaster step and kick ball change. Yes, there are restarts, three of them altogether but once you know the music they are easy to pick up. Wall 2 and 6 restarts are on the back wall and wall 4 facing the front. I can honestly say, hand on heart, Scouts or Brownies honour etc. etc. that I absolutely love dancing this and have never got tired of it. So it is with a heavy heart that I am sad it never really seemed to get off the ground. So come on all you teachers and dancers, get 'Hey Brother' out on the dance floor and make me a happy bunny once more. Until next time, happy dancing to everyone out there.

HI there Folks and welcome to the Western Partner Dance section of the magazine, plenty happening around the dance circuit at the moment with all the festivals starting at Easter, plenty of new dances being written and taught so it looks like a busy year on the Dance Floor. We have just started to add 2 Step Instruction into our classes , giving the people a chance to have a go at it and learn to do some freestyle dancing instead of the patterned dances that we usually teach. Hopefully it will start some more people getting interested in this very popular side of Partner Dancing. We have sent up a couple of Dance Scripts for you to have a go at. One is a nice steady partner dance called “ How Could I “ choreographed by Ann Williams and danced to a track called “ How Could I Love Her So Much “ by Jerry & The Ruff-Nex, this is also the same song as sung by Nathan Carter that has a couple of Line Dances to it. The other dance script we have sent up to the magazine is called “ Mayflowers “ it’s an interesting dance as it is based on the 2 Step Pattern so gives dancers another insight into learning 2 Step, This one is choreographed by Dave & Lesley Mather and is danced to a track called “ Mayflowers “ sung by Ashley Monroe, both of these dances have videos of them on our website , just go to the RECENTLY ADDED MEDIA section and you will find them in there. Website http://alan-and-sonia.webs.com Both of these dances have been taught recently at our classes and they both went down well with the dancers. Hopefully by introducing Partner Dancing into the magazine it has helped some of you get into Partner Dancing and have a go, we try wherever possible to encourage both Partner & Line to be on the dance floor at the same time as it always looks great at festivals & socials when we are all dancing together.

LOVE2PARTNER DANCE

A lot of the Partner Dances are now being done to Line Dance music tracks so that helps in keeping the floor full. We shall be aut and about on the dance circuit again this year and are pleased that we are working alongside Dan & Kelly Albro when they come over from the USA ( Mishknock Barn ) to teach at Liverpool in June this year, as they are teaching both Line & Partner whilst they are there we will be able to publish the dances that they taught in the magazine. Please look out for us at the festivals as we quite often teach at Line/Partner Dance Festivals working alongside some of the top Line Dance Choreographers, and have a lot of fun wherever and whenever we teach. We always believe that fun & laughter on the dance floor is as important as the dancing and teaching, it stops it being a long drawn out procedure when you are teaching. So if you see us there at a festival or event, please come up and introduce yourselves

As with all new ventures it is a case of trial and error and ironing out teething problems. We hope that our magazine will entertain you and help maintain your passion for line dancing. We would love to hear from you about your line dancing experiences. Tell us how you got started. How do your family and friends feel about your dancing or do they share it with you? Have you been on any dancing holidays and would like to share your memories and adventures? Have you any questions that other line dancers may be able to help with?

This magazine is for you so don’t be shy, we would love to hear from you.
