well as renowned resources. In 2014, mainland Tanzania celebrated 50 years of unity with Zanzibar. The country is an example of peace and unity on the continent. New developments have strengthened economic growth and are creating further business interest with local and foreign investors. Investment is being encouraged through the development of a number of investment perks for industry and tax incentives. Tanzania is a fusion of ancient cultures which intermingled over time. The people of the nation are considered a national asset and exude an entrepreneurial and industrious spirit. The government of Tanzania is determined to nurture and protect its assets and is focussing on developing sustainably.
Tourism
According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, Tourism’s contribution to Tanzania’s GDP in 2013 was 4.5%. It is forecast to increase by 6.2% each year from 2014 to 2024.
Geography Tanzania’s spectacular landscape includes three main physiographic regions: the islands and the coastal plains; the inland saucer-shaped plateau; and the highlands in the north and south. The Great Rift Valley runs from northeast of Africa through central Tanzania, creating another notable landmark of scenic splendour. About 7% of Tanzania’s total land surface is covered by three fresh water lakes bordering Tanzania – Lake Victoria (second largest fresh water lake in the world), Lake Tanganyika (second-deepest lake in the world), and Lake Nyasa (otherwise known as Lake Malawi).

Katavi National Park Isolated, quiet and unspoilt, Katavi is a true wilderness, providing a taste of Africa as it was. Tanzania's third largest national park at 4,471km², it lies in the southwest of the country, within the Rift Valley, ending in the shallow expanse of Lake Rukwa. Game viewing is focused on the Katuma River and its floodplains, such as the seasonal Lakes Katavi and Chada. In the dry season, the Katuma becomes a rare source of drinking water – drawing an abundance of hippos and 4,000 elephants.

Tribes & Culture of Tanzania
The Tanzanian culture is especially significant in Africa, as even though there are around 126 different distinct tribes, this diversity has seldom led to modern conflict. Tribes range from the iconic Masai pastoralists of the Rift Valley, to the Hadzabe hunter-gatherers of the Lake Eyasi basin, to the industrious Chagga agriculturists of the Kilimanjaro footslopes. The most populous tribes are the Sukuma, Haya, Chagga, Nyamwezi, Makonde, Hehe and Gogo, each comprising less than 10% of the total population.

Masai The Masai’s distinctive red attire and customs have made them into one of the most worldrenowned African tribes. They are nomadic herders and warriors living in the wildlife-rich plains of the Great Rift Valley stretching across northern Tanzania and southern Kenya, often referred to as Masailand. The warriors are one of the most respected groups of the Masai and are known worldwide. These men wear draped cloth and carry traditional weapons. The cloth used is commonly red, adding an imposing air to their already impressive tall stature. They are also well-known for their distinctive dance of simultaneous high leaps accompanied by deep rhythmic chanting. Masai women are renowned for their jewellery which they layer around their necks, arms, legs, and ears in an arrangement of colourful beads and metal ornaments. Survivors of a past era, the Masai live in much the same way as their ancestors did for centuries. Unconcerned with the concept of time, their lives are governed by the rising and setting of the sun, the rugged landscape and the seasons. Despite Masai society facing many challenges, they are able to adapt to changing conditions. Their strong traditional customs allow them to live in harmony with their precious surroundings.
Hadzabe The Hadzabe are a hunter-gatherer tribe that has inhabited the Rift Valley in the Lake Eyasi Basin vicinity for the past 10,000 years. Their native tongue is a unique language filled with “clicks” and “pops”. Their entire population only numbers about 2000 and they are among the last existing full-time hunter-gatherers on earth. The women gather berries and pick baobab fruit, while men collect honey and hunt local wildlife using poison arrows. As this is the only way they provide for themselves, they are the only people legally allowed to hunt in the Serengeti. They believe in individual autonomy and have no official leaders or authorities. The Hadzabe tribe is one of the last tribes that have stayed undiluted by tourism and universal globalisation – maintaining the lifestyle of their ancestors for centuries.

Sukuma The Sukuma are the largest group in Tanzania with a population of over five million. They are scattered around the country, living in both rural areas and cities such as Mwanza and Shinyanga. Their traditional lifestyle has been drastically influenced by modern living. In rural areas, they grow crops such as cotton, corn, potatoes and rice or raise livestock. A staple food is ‘ugali’, a traditional East African dish similar to porridge. The Sukuma are divided into two main groups called Kimakia and Kisomayo – with further subgroups. They speak the Sukuma language and Swahili. The Sukuma have many different

Stalwarts of Tanzania Business
The trade winds have long brushed past Tanzania’s coastline and stirred up a spirit of commerce. From simple trades in resources and commodities such as fish, spices and precious stones, Tanzania has nurtured an entrepreneurial society. SMEs constitute a massive percentage of the total number of businesses in Tanzania and a number of trailblazing businessmen and women behind some of Tanzania’s largest companies are tapping into this market and making waves across the African continent.

With the right eye of choosing an excellent team of entrepreneurs, Joseph Kusaga has managed to lead Clouds Media Group into a multimedia company reaching across Africa and parts of the Middle East. Focusing on moving the company into broader reach, Joseph Kusaga has ensured that Clouds Media Group through Clouds TV International is the first media house to have an African TV station in the Middle East and is now only pushing it further into the international market. Being the owner of PrimeTime Promotions, which is a subsidiary of Clouds Media Group, Joseph Kusaga has also made history with various events such as Tanzania’s biggest music tour known as Fiesta. Having had various international artists such Jay Z, Sean Paul, T.I., Lil Kim, Rick Ross, Shaggy alongside all Tanzanian A-list artists, Fiesta keeps expanding as the years go by. Though prior to Fiesta and CMG, during his college years is when the forward thinking Joseph Kusaga had already implemented his passion for event management by being responsible for the hottest events when Tanzania was not yet as exposed to music and entertainment as you see today. All in all, anyone who has had the opportunity of meeting and having a chat with Joseph Kusaga will tell you that after all of the accomplishments he has achieved up to date, he remains to be a very humble man who puts his family first in addition to supporting the many youth wanting to follow in his footsteps.

United Nations and designed under the direction of then President Julius Nyerere. The aim for the city, designed over 1,000 hectares, was to be "the chief village in a nation of villages”. However, most of the initial design never came to fruition, and many government offices chose to remain in Dar es Salaam. The two cities are connected by the Central Railway Line over a distance of 465 kilometres. The city's airport, Dodoma Airport is managed by the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority and the Dodoma municipal authority is also responsible for the upkeep of the nearby Hombolo Dam.
Education Dodoma’s various universities include St John’s University of Tanzania (owned by the Anglican Church of Tanzania), and the University of Dodoma, famously known as UDOM, with about 35,000 students. Both universities officially opened in 2007. Others include Mipango University and CBE. The Anglican Church also owns the only international school in Dodoma: Canon Andrea Mwaka School (CAMS), which was established in 1950.
Sport Football is by far the most popular sport in Dodoma and the city is represented in the Tanzanian Premier League by football clubs Polisi Dodoma and JKT Ruvu Stars. Played on a regular basis, football is the favourite hobby among most young boys in Dodoma. Interest in other sports (such as volleyball, basketball, and even rugby) is also gradually increasing.

National Parks of Tanzania Tanzania is truly an unmatched safari destination with 15 declared National Parks, under the management of Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA).
One-quarter of the country’s surface area has been set aside for conservation purposes – with the world-renowned Serengeti National Park and vast Selous Game Reserve at the forefront of a rich mosaic of protected areas. Collectively these parks harbour an estimated 20% of Africa’s large mammal population. However, they offer so much more than just game drives to view this spectacular wildlife. Some other activities available to visitors include Bird Watching, Boat Trips, Canoeing Safaris, Chimpanzee Tracking, Fishing, Hiking, Hot Air Ballooning, Mountain Biking, Mountain Climbing, Swimming, Snorkelling and Walking Safaris. It is difficult to mentally encapsulate the Tanzanian experience. Images conjured up include those

MAHALE MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK Tracking the chimps of Mahale is a magical experience. Covering an area of 1613km², Mahale Mountains National Park is home to some of the Africa’s last remaining wild chimpanzees; a population of roughly 800. Mahale’s mountain ridge is around 50km in length and runs across the park from the northwest to the southeast. Its tallest peak, Mt Nkungwe, rises 2462m – the highest point on Lake Tanganyika’s shoreline. The western slopes form a gigantic wall that plunges into the Lake, continuing down under the water and creating the lake’s enormous depths. Located in northern Tanzania, Lake Eyasi lies in the southwest corner of the Ngorongoro Crater conservation area.
Lake Manyara Lake Manyara’s alkaline waters cover around 231km² in area. A National Park located in the Rift Valley in northern Tanzania, Lake Manyara is west of Arusha Town. Its main attraction is its tree climbing lions. Together with Lake Natron, Lake Manyara is an ideal breeding ground for soda loving algae, which attracts large flocks of flamingos.
Lake Natron Also part of the East Africa Rift Valley Lakes, Lake Natron is a natural alkaline soda lake. At 57km in length, Lake Natron is quite shallow with a depth of less than 3m. It attracts an abundance of bird life including thousands of flamingos. The area hosts a pristine forest reserve and grass plains that extend into the Rift Valley. The Lake is located in northern Tanzania, north of Ngorongoro highlands and south of the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai.

Secondly we have a wide distribution network that would be the envy of most banks in Tanzania in terms of the network we are building and our association with the
FINANCIAL TRANSFORMATION TPB has been undergoing a financial transformation over the last six years. Revenue has grown by 260% from TZS 20 billion in 2010 to TZS 92 billion in 2016. From 2015 to 2016, revenue grew 24% from TZS 74 billion to TZS 92 billion.

Loans and advances have also grown to TZS 298 billion in 2016 from TZS 65 billion in 2010, growth of 358% or TZS 233 billion. Loans and advances grew by 18% from TZS 252 billion in 2015 to TZS 298 billion in 2016.

Umoja Switch. Further, TPB has built a diverse workforce of the best and we seek to further deepen this pool. Also, TPB is a local brand that our primary markets understand, grew up with and identify with. TPB is now 92 years old since our inception in 1925, we have a long and close-knit history with Tanzania. Finally we have positioned ourselves as a conduit for the breadth of transactions that Tanzanians wish to make. From mobile money we have partnered with M-PESA and Airtel Money, to international money transfers with Western Union, to TRA payments, to insurance payments; we cover the full scope of financial transactions that make life better for Tanzanians.
Profitability likewise has also grown by 1,644% from TZS 0.9 billion in 2010 to TZS 15.7 billion in 2016. Year-on-year, profit before tax has been on a constant upward trajectory like revenue. Pre-tax profit grew by 31% from TZS 12.0 billion in 2015 to 15.7 billion in 2016.
The bank’s balance sheet has grown steadily from TZS 121 billion in 2010 to TZS 401 billion in 2016, growth of 231% or TZS 280 billion. Between 2015 and 2016, total assets grew by 8%.

What is the way to reach Tanzania’s unbanked population? Several things need to happen together to reach Tanzania's unbanked population in terms of how a bank manages its distribution channel. This is a cash economy so the physical presence of a bank matters, so apart from the more traditional brick and mortar approach a bank needs a mix of its distribution network. Technology needs to be leveraged as a means to create low cost, convenient, value-adding products like TPB Popote where customers can use both their mobile phones or point of sale machines. Agency banking needs to be embraced as this creates a "branch" in a customers doorstep which is what TPB is doing. Banks should also look at collaboration with non-traditional
This impressive growth has been underpinned by health growth in balance sheet items over the same period. Total deposits have grown by TZS 228 billion from TZS 109 billion in 2010 to TZS 337 billion in 2016, 209% growth. Growth of 9% was registered between TZS 308 billion in 2015 and TZS 337 billion in 2016.

The bank’s equity has shown real value for the owners having grown from TZS 7.7 billion in 2010 to TZS 51.8 billion in 2016, growth of 573%. The banks shareholders fund grew by 26% from TZS 41.0 billion in 2015 to TZS 51.8 billion in 2016.

banking institutions where partnership and not competition is the way to go as this can be used as a gateway to reach the unbanked. Again TPB has shown the way through its tie-ups with Vodacom, Tigo Airtel and Zantel their mobile money products M-PESA, Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money and Ezy Pesa respectively.
What is your view on Tanzania’s banking sector current situation and possible evolution? The sector will remain very competitive simply because a small section of the Tanzanian population is banked by many banks. Banks will continue to focus their brick and mortar operations in urban/peri-urban areas, margins will continue to be pressed in the short to medium term in regards to historic levels but this
