Can you believe that we are already fast approaching July 2012? Where does all the time go? And how does one slow it down? Scary – very scary! As we come into the second half of the year, there’s an optimistically cautious yet renewed sense of hope for the local economy. Certainly the concept for this magazine was born from my own personal interest in community structures and from having both lived and run a business in this area. I truly believe in getting to know my neighbours’ and getting involved by volunteering and shopping locally…and so it has been a dream of mine to launch a current magazine within the community, for the community. After months of planning, years of dreaming of a goal... the day is finally here, The North Side Magazine has been launched and you are reading it. Together we will learn more about our community, as our magazine will cover the pertinent articles within this quarter and many other stories of interest to all of us in the future editions. Much time and planning has gone into the preparation of this magazine. Our wish is that with the full support of the residents and business owners we will watch it grow as our community grows and prospers. Businesses who wish to advertise in our magazine will also receive complimentary copies for their customers. Advertising space is limited providing more editorial space for readership interest. Current isues can be found in many local businesses. Our advertising rates are available (e-mail mattsmith@icon. co.za) to encourage support as we build circulation. Please call us to confirm your advertising space... Most importantly we ask you to please support our advertisers: take note of their special offers, courses and unique services, and resolve to call or visit them this month. What better way to affect positive change than to support the very people whose ads, advertorials, editorials and news bring you The North Side free each quarter along with some fantastic reader giveaways, see page 65. We should all take great personal pride in our community - we work and live here, our families shop here, attend schools here, we volunteer here, and this is where our families call home. For all of you our goal is that The North Side covers articles of interest and brings you a haven from the pressures of modern living, a chance to slow down and a reminder of the good things in life. Until the third quarter, when we delve into our special feature, Healthy mind, remember that healthy living is green and green living is healthy. All the best

Golf estates abound in South Africa but none can match Zebula, a stunning and totally unique lifestyle destination a mere 2 hours' drive north of Johannesburg in the magnificent malaria-free Waterberg region of Limpopo Province. Located on 1600 hectares of pristine bushveld in the shadow of the Waterberg mountains, Zebula commands a most spectacular setting. Undulating, indigenous treecovered hills and wide-open grasslands are punctuated with frequent dams and waterholes – a diverse landscape that supports a wide variety of game, birds and small wildlife. Upmarket luxury homes are tastefully designed and privately positioned so as not to impose on the surroundings. The Peter Matkovitch-designed golf course respects the environment, following the natural contours of the terrain, a masterful symphony of indigenous bush and landscaped areas. Surprising for its bushveld location, water supply is both abundant and sustainable, ensuring that the quality of the greens is unrivalled and that playing surfaces are always top notch. Naturally occurring game include Kudu, Impala, Blue Wildebeest, Zebra, Blesbok, Red Haartebeest, Giraffe, Eland, Jackal, Warthog, Ostrich as well as many other indigenous species. Visitors and residents are able to walk, run, cycle or drive on the estate and get up close and personal with the wildlife, making a trip to Zebula a true back to nature experience. Those seeking the thrill of the Big 5 can be indulged at adjoining Mabalingwe Nature Reserve. Zebula offers 3hr roundtrip game drives. The Spa at Zebula is a haven for golfers and non-golfers alike. Demonstrate your Corporate Social Responsibility FreeMe An amazing thing about city life is how many wild animals are still present, living amongst humans and their roads and buildings. Many of these animals are seldom seen, such as nocturnal hedgehogs, genets, owls and bats. Other animals which come out during the day are adept at avoiding humans, keeping to thick undergrowth and wild areas. All too often, the time when wild animals are seen is when they need help – perhaps injured by a car or a dog, trapped for the muthi trade, or fallen from a nest. Every year thousands of birds, mammals and reptiles living in gardens or un-developed land become orphaned, sick, or suffer injuries. Most of the veterinarians in the city do not have the facilities to care for them: most of all they need a very quiet, stress-free hospital environment. This is why FreeMe is so important, as a dedicated wildlife clinic and rehabilitation centre. We have a small full-time staff and a group of trained volunteers who donate their time to care for wildlife until the animals are ready to be released back into the wild. We are open seven days a week from 8am to 5pm, with an after-hours hotline, and we welcome calls from the public asking for advice and support. FreeMe relies on members of the public to bring compromised animals to the centre, and for notification if there are wild animals in distress. In emergencies such as oil-spills volunteers may travel to a locality to rescue and assist wildlife. FreeMe is a registered non-profit organisation, relying on the generosity of the public for funding. A lot of our work is done by volunteers - morning and afternoon shifts feed, clean and nurse patients in the clinic and aviaries;couriers bring injured animals from their area to the FreeMe centre; others raise funds, fix plumbing, build cages ... We welcome new volunteers: whatever your talent, FreeMe can use it! Traditional families are fast disappearing off the face of the African Continent. Family units are destroyed by war, poverty and disease. As concerned citizens, we are called to intervene at this time to provide comfort and care to those who survive this onslaught. Each person has a unique purpose, specific gifts and talents, and great potential. Their lives are as precious and meaningful to us as is any other that shares our world. At Just One Child we start with the children; those abandoned by parents, grandparents, society and even government. Our aim is to create blended family units blind to race, gender, colour, creed or health status. Through these families children are loved, nurtured, supported and cared for in a normal environment. Our children are normalized, not institutionalized.

What makes Just One Child different? Just One Child has created blended families in two locations; Clairvaux Infant Haven in Rivonia and Thabang House in Wendywood. Each location is a small non-threatening environment that provides a warm and loving home to an average of six children each.

Make today a day to invest in families

Arbor Month September is Arbor Month, and every year Joburg City Parks hosts range of activities in celebration. JOBURG City Parks plans to plant 10 000 trees during September - and we want everyone to do their bit to make the city green. This year’s Arbor Month also falls during the participation process of the City's Growth and Development Strategy (GDS) for 2040, which is dedicated to creating a city that is smart, liveable and environmentally friendly. Week 7 of the GDS - with an environmental focus - runs from 19 to 23 September. The week will be used to identify environmental issues facing the city and proposing possible solutions. We'll also be working on various projects during Environment Week, including beautifying our different regions and helping clean and reclaim open spaces.

The UN International Day of Families, SOS Children’s Villages raises awareness of the challenges affecting families today. The changes on the global economic landscape and its effects on the most vulnerable, namely children, has been largely overlooked. It is an occasion to bring attention to their plight. In these challenging times those working with over two million of the world’s most vulnerable children and their families have provided a unique insight into the issues that are common to many. SOS Children’s Villages teams across five continents share their experiences and concerns as they provide realistic options for legislators and others who wish to do something NOW to make family life better in 2013. The priority of SOS Children’s Villages is to help families care for children. Regardless of their background, children should live in a family who will support them to reach their potential. When it is not possible for a child to remain in his or her biological family, he or she may find a new home within a family in an SOS Children’s Village. Today, is a day to invest in families SOS Children’s Villages requests that everyone unite and pursue a can-do approach to help families overcome crisis. By understanding “the notion of family,” society can strive to provide parents with the resources needed to live in dignity and to have what is necessary to devote to the full and optimal development of their children. www.sos-childrensvillages.org

The Johannesburg Voluntary mounted River Rangers

Environmental Watchdogs

The Johannesburg Voluntary Mounted River Rangers conduct daily environmental patrols from 2 equestrian bases on the north side of the largest city in South Africa. From Where to Where?

Patrols cover a 17 km stretch of City parkland and river trails along the Braamfontein Spruit and the Sandspruit Rivers. Public parks in Riverclub, Parkmore, Bryanston, Paulshof & Sunninghill are also monitored by our Rangers. Why?

Sewerage spills, illegal dumping, littering and water pollution need to be managed on a sustainable basis. Horses and volunteer riders offer a low-impact solution for observing and reporting these problems to city authorities so that rapid interventions can be applied. Since 2002 the numbers of vagrants inhabiting informal squatter camps along the Braamfontein Spruit have also mushroomed. The River Rangers supply regular updates to the SA Police Services (SAPS), as well as Community forums & Security managers in the above areas so the size and spread of these camps can be controlled. The reporting of fallen trees, fires, flood damage, the spread of invasive vegetation and the illegal pumping of water out of local rivers is also part of the River Ranger mandate. Our patrol horses are stabled on land leased from the Johannesburg Property Company (Propcom). We operate from bases at the Field & Study Centre in Sandton and from Rivonia Riding Club section 21, non profit organization. For more info visit www.riverrangers.org.za

Friends of the Sandspruit A remarkable change has occurred in Sunninghill over the last few years: increasing numbers of residents are beginning to take possession of our public spaces – and that means extending the hiking, biking and horse riding trails along the banks of the Sandspruit. Although numbers are still modest, each additional new user helps make a difference. There was a time when river frontage was the exclusive domain of squatters. This is why so many businesses in the Sunninghill node turned their backs on the spruit and why it deteriorated into a forgotten asset. There remain a few squatters but police raids take place regularly and their home – a disused basement in an unfinished building is scheduled for demolition. A more recent initiative is to establish a monthly weekend market along the riverbank. The potential is currently being assessed and sometime this winter a decision will be made on whether to take the proposal forward. The Sandspruit is arguably Sunninghill’s most valuable natural asset. The Zionist church thinks so. Did you know water is collected daily by churchgoers at its confluence with the Braamfontein Spruit? It is regarded to have special powers and, despite warning signs to the contrary, the water is drunk. The fledgling organisation Friends of the Sandspruit seeks to ensure that one day these ‘healing waters’ will indeed be uncontaminated and available for all to enjoy – churchgoers and non churchgoers alike. The return of the frogs will herald that event. In addition to the commitment to rehabilitate the spruit, Friends of the Sandspruit will seek to protect the existing public land on either side from further encroachment. This body will also help Sunninghill Community raise the necessary funds for regular bush clearing, general cleanups and other improvements – such as the extension of hiking and horse trails. So we call on residents and businesses to join us at our launch fundraiser event – Dancing in the Streets to be held at the Barnyard Theatre on July 13th at 8pm. It promises to be a smash hit! Tickets cost R145. There will be dancing, singing and music! Bring your picnic baskets or order pizza from Barnyard Pizza Deli. A fully stocked bar and coffee station is also available. Tickets are R145 per person.

Book Now – suncommunity@iafrica.com, group bookings available. Contact us for further

details on catering or a map to the theatre. We look forward to seeing you there! But this winter isn’t only about residents enjoying themselves. We haven’t forgotten about the squatters. Because we make a difference in our wider community, in just … weeks Sunninghill Community collected over R15 000. On the 13th June 150 blankets were distributed among poor folk living in a nearby informal settlement. To our residents and businesses we say: ‘Thank you for contributing to our blanket drive so willingly! You rock! It would be truly awesome if we were able to collect an equivalent amount at the launch of Friends of the Sandspruit!’

Public open space at end of Achter Rd

Dear Resident, We have initiated a project with the backing of the PRRA to beautify our area and add value to the communities’ quality of life. Until recently the Public Open Space (POS) at the end of Achter Road (North of the club and adjacent to the stables) has been the subject of much debate as to its future. At a recent meeting with our ward councillor Mrs Annette Deppe, PRRA chairman Brydal Martin, Guy Addison and myself, the subject of the POS was discussed, shortly thereafter Cllr Deppe phoned me to inform me she had 30 trees for the community and would like to see 20 planted in the POS and 10 in the park by the kids playground (Brackenhill Rd) . Based on these few trees, an idea was born I put a proposal together embarking on an ambitious project to turn the POS into a proper park. I secured a further 30 trees from City Parks and approached Lauren Hegele from the Rivonia stables with my idea for the POS – who immediately wanted to be involved and offered compost and labour for tree planting. My neighbour John Brammall who has been of huge assistance in cleaning up the Sandspruit greenbelt, also without hesitation saw the merits of the idea and offered labour to help with this project, John works closely with Sunninghill Community (SC) and manager Kerry Mawson, who also committed to helping in any way they can. From these small beginnings in the last 6 weeks we have managed to form a working

group consisting of those mentioned above, and including Mrs Vivian Alcock (Vice Chairperson of the Johannesburg Volunteer River Rangers). Kerry Mawson (SC) managed to secure a further 140 trees from City Parks for Paulshof (the majority of which will be used in the POS), a number of the trees have been given to the stables (already planted), the other trees are being kept safe and watered at the stables. We have already planted 23 trees along the bottom area of the POS. A copy of the envisaged layout is attached (please excuse my artwork), but hopefully it will give everyone an idea of our vision. Below is the rough outline of the project, the support of the residents is key to the realisation of this project, and any residents wishing to get involved and participate will be more than welcome. Paulshof Public Open Space Project Phase 1 1. A common vision from the working team and how we will achieve it, Stables and Public Open Space (POS) must for all intents and purposes be seen as one (aesthetics). 2. We have secured over R150 000.00 worth of trees for planting in the POS - along the spruit banks 23 have been planted already. 3. We are planting individual trees and some groves (5 trees) around the centre of the POS - for dramatic effect we are trying to secure jacket plum trees to be planted in the centre of 4 African bush willows in each grove, as well as on some borders.

8 | WINTER | NORTHSIDE MAGAZINE | www.thenorthside.co.za

4. The centre area will be left untouched for the plovers, which is a nesting and breeding site. 5. A theme for the POS has been agreed by the working group that will drive the project – hopefully to encourage Jhb City Council to support designating the area as a park. We propose the “park” become a designated “Bird Park” - it is ideally situated on the rivers to attract a large and varied number of birds. 6. A full proposal must be drawn up and submitted to the City Council, this could result in the project being given “Flagship Park” status and budget monies allocated in the fiscus – only ONE Flagship Park is approved each year per ward. 7. We will be raising funds through an “adopt a tree” programme, R200.00 per tree (1 only per household) – this will give the resident a “naming plaque” - Year, name (not surname), the street/area they’re from and eventual bird feeder rights (you will be able to put a bird feeder in your tree). 8. We would like to involve the community in bird spotting and building a data base of birds via the Paulshof website, this will be a fantastic way for the community to get involved. Phase 2 9. De-stoning of the POS (the stone will be kept - if usable, to build some low stone walls, either side of the entrance to the POS?). The centre area where the plovers breed will be left untouched as a feature. 10. The entire remaining area will be re-seeded the with a “park type” grass. Phase 3 11. Have the POS re-designated/classified from Agricultural holding to “Public Park” and offer the city council naming rights to the park (hopefully this will encourage participation). 12. By showing support and getting involved the possibility of the POS being re-designated to a “Park” will encourage the Council to allocate funding to securely fence the “Park” (as they did with Hamil-

ton Dog Park in Petervale). 13. Build a “track” around the outside of the “park” (inside the fence) for cyclists, joggers, walkers and security. 14. Build a “causeway” (1 or 2) across the Braamfontein spruit (approval from council required) with access into the park, gates to be lockable. 15. In the morning/evening – security providers will lock p.m./unlock a.m. when using the trail on their rounds – foot patrol/cycle or quad bike. 16. Possibly revamp the security hut at the end of Achter Rd as an access control into the park or as a permanent station for a foot patrol guard? 17. Install a set of sponsored playground equipment from a local business for the “park”. 18. Install concrete benches into the park. 19. Have the club set up a “Tea Garden” in the park with an access via the bowling greens – revenue could be generated? 20. A clear view fence (1.8m) to be built

on one side of the POS adjacent to the horse paddocks. 21. Parking could be provided at the club? Phase 4 22. Turn the “park” into the community hub for future events – Spring Fair, Craft market etc. 23. A secured/safe (fenced) “theme” park with a horse/cycling/jogging trail (+/- 2km around), will be a great asset to Paulshof, especially being adjacent to the stables and the recreation club, and a draw card for families to want to live in the area – not only will the project add value to your property, but also offer a safe/ secure environment for residents to enjoy. Kind Regards, Simon Priestley Committee Member PRRA simon@spectank.co.za Tel No: 011 452 5525

Eskom reports a sound financial performance for the third consecutive year Thursday, 14 June 2012:Eskom today reported a sound financial performance for the third consecutive year, earning a surplus which will be reinvested in full in the company to support its expansion and service debt. This comes after two years in which Eskom has reshaped its business to position it for better performance and future growth, so that it can fulfil its purpose of growing the economy and improving the quality of life of the people of South Africa and the region. Eskom showed net profit of R13.2-billion for the year to end-March 2012, up from R8.4 - billion for the previous year and only slightly above the R12.8billion which the company reported for the first half of its financial year to end-September. Eskom’s business tends to be seasonal, with most of its profit earned in the first half of the year, which covers the winter months when tariffs for large customers are higher and maintenance costs are lower. The Minister of Public Enterprises, Malusi Gigaba, said: “These are pleasing results which come just as we have celebrated two milestone events in the life of Eskom. Last week, we had President Jacob Zuma visit Eskom’s new Medupi power station to initiate the final phase of the boiler pressure

test on the first unit of the power station, and we are now clearly on track for Medupi to deliver first power to the national grid before the end of 2013. Earlier this week we were in the Eastern Cape to celebrate the four millionth household to be connected to electricity since the electrification programme started in 1991.These mile-

stones highlight the importance of Eskom’s role. Eskom must continue to improve its financial health so that it can invest to support economic growth and job creation and improve the quality of life.” The Chief Executive of Eskom, Brian Dames, said: “We are a different company to what we were two years ago. We have put a strategy in place to transform Eskom into a high performance utility and position it to grow. Although we are not there yet, we have now put the building blocks in place to take the company forward.”

10 | WINTER | NORTHSIDE MAGAZINE | www.thenorthside.co.za

“Eskom’s strong performance over the past two years, and the decision by our shareholder to sacrifice some of its return on equity, enabled us to apply successfully to the National Energy Regulator (Nersa) in March to reduce the average electricity tariff increase for the current year to 16%, from the 25.9% which Nersa originally granted us,” Dames said. The year to end-March 2012 saw significant progress on Eskom’s capacity expansion programme. Two of its three return-to-service power stations, Camden and Grootvlei, have now been commissioned and the third of these stations, Komati, is two thirds complete. Eskom has now installed a total of 5.8 GW of new generating capacity, 3899 Km of high voltage transmission lines and 20 195 MVA of new transformer capacity since the start of the capacity expansion programme in 2005. The programme, which also includes two large new coal-fired stations, Medupi and Kusile, a pump storage scheme, Ingula, and new transmission infrastructure, will ultimately add a total of 17.1 GW to the grid by the time it is completed in 2019. It has also had significant spinoffs in terms of creating jobs and developing local skills and local supplier industries, as well as

boosting the economies of the communities in which the projects are situated. “Our new build programme and the associated skills development programmes are a clear demonstration of how we can use infrastructure development to enable economic growth and job creation,” said Dames. Eskom reports annually on its triple bottom line, providing measures of its socio-economic impact and its environmental and safety record along with its financial performance. Highlights of the financial year included the electrification of 155 213 households, the R72.1-billion of broad based black economic empowerment spending, and the almost 12 000 individuals who are now being trained at Eskom. This includes a learner pipeline of over 6 700 engineering, technical and artisan learners and a further 5 159 learners in the youth programme. Eskom spent R1.4-billion on training during the year, up from R1-billion in the previous year. The company now employs 43 473 people directly and a total of 130 000 within its full scope of activities. The year to end-March 2012 saw only minimal growth in electricity sales, which increased by 0.2% to 224 785 GWh, falling short of the forecasted 1.2% increase. This reflected weaker than expected economic activity and industrial action in some sectors, as well as lower winter demand from large power users. However, the lower demand also reflected success in Eskom’s energy efficiency programmes, which have

yielded accumulated verified demand savings of 3 GW since 2005, equivalent to five units’ worth of the output of a typical six-pack power station. Electricity revenues increased to R113 billion (2011: R90.4 bn), mainly as a result of the 25.8% tariff increase granted by the National Energy Regulator of SA. This translated into revenue per kilowatt hour of 50.3c (2011: 40.3c), while costs per kWh in Eskom’s electricity business were 41.3c (2011: 32.8c). Costs rose as Eskom put initiatives in place during the year to manage a tight power system. A 29% increase in the cost of primary energy per kWh was the main driver of higher costs for the year to end-March, with coal burn costs rising by 20.8% per ton and Eskom spending R3.3-billion to buy power from independent power producers (IPPs). Eskom has contracted 1 008 MW of installed capacity from IPPs and municipal generators on a short or medium term basis, at an average price of 77c per kWh. “We have kept the lights on since 2008 and we are resolved to continue to do so despite a power system which will be tight for at least the next two years,” said Dames. “But we cannot keep the lights on alone, and it is costly: we urge all our customers to work with us and use energy as efficiently and sparingly as possible, especially during the evening peak this winter.” Eskom has a R300-billion funding plan in place to finance its capacity expansion

programme out to 2019, and 78% of this funding has now been secured. Eskom’s total borrowings stood at R182.6-billion at end-March, up from R160.3-billion at the previous year-end. The total is expected to grow to over R300-billion over the next three years as Eskom draws down on the loan agreements it has in place to complete the capacity expansion programme. “We have a healthy liquidity and funding position and we have managed to maintain our credit ratings, even though the outlook has been changed from stable to negative, in line with the sovereign rating,” said Eskom’s finance director Paul O’Flaherty. No dividend was declared for the year. Eskom’s shareholder, the Department of Public Enterprises, has waived its right to a dividend given the capacity expansion programme, enabling all surpluses to be retained for investment in future expansion. Keeping the lights on for South Africa will continue to be a priority for the 2012/2013 financial year, as will improving safety in Eskom’s operations. Eskom will also focus on delivering on the build programme, with a special focus on Medupi. It will also pursue programmes to enhance the efficiency of its operations and the reliability of its power stations, and continue to focus on transformation of the organisation to support South Africa’s broader macroeconomic objectives. Eskom will apply to Nersa later this year for a new multi-year price determination which will take effect from 1 April 2013.

Price: R480.00 From: www.wantitall.co.za www.bidorbuy.co.za www.kalahari.com Their unique design and slim dimensions make them two of the most advanced business tools available today.

Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch Price: R1499.00 Buy it: From www.bidorbuy.co.za www.wantitall.co.za Book-loving peeps who've held off on buying an e-reader will appreciate a Nook Simple Touch, which boasts a large library, an impressive battery life, and comes without pesky ads. With a compact, 6-inch touchscreen, the Simple Touch isn't a big device, so it's a great e-reader to take on the train or bus for dads who commute to work. Barnes and Noble’s Nook overcomes Kindle’s DRM shortfall Barnes & Noble’s new “Nook” may finally knock Kindle off of its ebook pedestal. Not only is it the same price as Kindle-2, but it comes with a multi-touch colour screen instead of Amazon’s monotone chiclet-keyboard, and runs on Google’s Android OS. While built-in wifi, 2GB of storage and MP3 are awesome features, it’s the ability to share the ebook with your friends that makes the Nook revolutionary. DRM and copyright management for online ebooks made it impossible to legally lend a book to your friend. With the DRM, at least for Kindle and the Amazon Kindle store that is, you’re not really buying a book because it doesn’t have the first sale rights. The first right of sale gives the buyer of intellectual property the right to resell or transfer the object without the permission of the copyright owner. Because the DRM of Amazon has limited the first right of sale, it means you cannot legally give the ebook away or sell it (even if you remove it from your Kindle and load it onto someone else’s Kindle). You also can’t lend it to someone else without lending them your Kindle. Even if you upgrade or buy a newer model of the Kindle you may not be able to re-retrieve or re-download previously purchased books. This technically means that you’re not buying anything when you download a book from the Amazon Kindle store. You’re obtaining temporary rights to possess the intellectual property.

Victorinox Slim and Victorinox Slim Duo These high performance portable data storage devices not only provide up to 128GB (2x64 GB for Slim Duo) of detachable storage for your important files, images, and presentations but also secure data encryption technology that can only be accessed through your personal password. When you are travelling for business and you need a secure backup for an important presentation, the bladeless Victorinox Slim is at your service. Besides being lightweight, protected and portable, this bladeless version is permitted to be carried on airplanes. Victorinox Slim Flight is available in a series of stylish colors.

A Tablet in Every Room: How to ‘Think Different’ About the Future One of Apple’s most interesting marketing slogans was “Think Different.” By Tim Bajarin

Steve Jobs purposely used this phrase to get people’s attention (some have questioned whether it uses correct grammar or not) and drive home a message about looking at the world from a different perspective. In this case, Jobs was pushing one of Apple’s key ideas that people can change the world. And if you know anything about Apple’s history, you know that Jobs and his team believed Apple’s own mission was to use technology to change the world. To Apple’s credit, their technology has been world-changing in the sense that products like the iPod, iPhone and more recently, the iPad, have made technology easier to use, easier to access and delivered personal computing in new ways to people of all walks of life. In fact, the iPad is literally redefining what personal computing is about and, along with the iPhone, has succeeded in making computing extremely personal. While the iPod and even the iPhone have been groundbreaking in their own right, it is perhaps Apple’s iPad tablet that may have the most profound impact on the world of personal computing since it is the first computer that is truly portable and

easy to carry with you everywhere you go. Yes, the iPhone and smartphones are more portable, but because of their small screens, their computing capabilities are limited. But with their larger screens, the iPad and similar tablets deliver much of the power of a laptop (minus the keyboard) and almost as much flexibility as you can get from bigger portable computers — but in a much smaller package. Tablets are on track to probably be the most ubiquitous portable computers we will have in our homes and offices in the future. But to see this future, we need to “think different” about them. Today we see tablets like the iPad and similar ones from companies like Samsung, Acer and others

as being operating system (OS) specific and brand specific. That is today, but in the future, that may not be the case. If you look at any tablet when turned off, what do you see? It’s a blank screen. In this state, it is pretty worthless. But when turned on and connected to apps and the Internet, it comes alive and has great value. Many people will be willing to pay to have a specific OS and brand if they get extra value from what these brands offer them. But there is another scenario that could possibly be quite interesting for the mass market. Because of my company’s consulting work, we have around 10-12 tablets hanging around the office or in our homes at any given time. Recently I found that I

had about six of them around my house. They ranged from iOS-based iPads, Android-based tablets and even a Windows 8 pre-beta test unit, and they were in different rooms in my home for various reasons. One was at my bedside, one in the kitchen, one in the family room, one on the coffee table in the living room and two in my study. At various times when I needed to use a tablet, I just picked up the one closest to me at that time. And while all had different operating systems and apps, they all had one important common denominator: a web browser. Multiple surveys show that when it comes to tablets, 50% of the time spent on them is using the tablet’s web browser. Now think about how many apps you use that also have web app versions: apps like Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and others. While localized apps are great, if you have a connection to the Internet, the browser apps will work just as well. Yes, there will be apps like games and others that will work best on dedicated OS models, but web-based tablets could represent the real future of tablets, and they will be so cheap you could have one in every room of your house if you wanted to. The reason they will be so cheap will be because of something called subsidization. We already have a good example of this with Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet. The Kindle Fire sells for $199, but sources tell us that the bill of materials (BOM) for the Kindle Fire is at least $215. Amazon is willing to sell it at $199 price because they expect a Kindle Fire buyer to purchase perhaps at least 10 e-books, rent at least five movies and buy various products from the Amazon store that the Amazon can amortize against the actual cost of the tablet and actually make a profit on it. But Amazon doesn’t have a patent on this idea. For example, Walmart has many of the things needed to do what Amazon does: an e-commerce store for all of their products, digital movie rentals, and digital music sales. And in Walmart’s case, they also have the physical storefronts to back this up. They may count on the fact that their users will buy even more products from them if they own a Walmart tablet that makes it really easy to buy e-books, music, movies and products from their online store. They can also use it as an advertising vehicle for special offers. And in Walmart’s case, maybe they sell their own subsidized tablet for $99

— or in some cases even give it away for free with special promotions. Take Proctor and Gamble as another example. They have over a hundred products they would like to sell you through their retail partners. What if they could get a reasonably priced P&G tablet built and branded for them, and then use it to drive promotions to users to help subsidize part of the cost of such a tablet. From the users’ standpoint, the web apps drive their broad content and apps needs, but by offering the tablet at a very discounted rate, P&G would have a captive audience willing to get ads in exchange for the discounted tablet. Now this won’t happen anytime soon, since for this to work, component prices will still need to come down and inexpensive ubiquitous connectivity will have to be in place so the tablets can work inside the home as well as when away from Wi-Fi connections. Even with these low cost options, a product like Apple’s iPad will continue to thrive because of its versatility. And of all the options out there, it would perhaps be the top of the line model users could choose from. But if you “think different” about tablets, you might be able to see a future where families could have four or five scattered around the house at their disposal — some subsidized by various vendors so that owning more than one is the norm. And while the operating system may still be important to handle localized apps for some users, the most-used feature will be the web browser and web apps tied to the cloud where most of your personal digital life will reside. That is at the heart of Google’s vision for its own tablet that’s rumored to come out in July. I expect it to be low priced and to some degree subsidized by Google ads tied into their web apps like Gmail and search, which will be key to the Google tablet experience. The bottom line is that today’s tablets are great and thanks to Apple, the role of tablets in our lives is being broadened now. But if you “think different” you will see that the tablets of the future will just be screens that use web browsers to connect us to everything we need from the cloud, and thanks to subsidization, they’ll be cheap enough that each room in our homes can have one. When you need to use a tablet, you’ll just pick up the one that’s closest to you.

Trending now, luxe gold married with crisp white Ultra–luxurious yet perfectly tempered without being over the top All that glitters may or may not be gold (in fact, it is usually polished brass), but it certainly is a hot design trend right now. Mind you, this isn’t your mother’s 1980’s era brass. You know, the kind that was used for overly ornate faucets and accessories to go with the Laura Ashley wallpaper and the little pink soaps in the guest bath? Instead, gold is now the accent of choice to warm up that other trending “colour” – crisp white. Although gold can also be used to great effect with navy blue, chartreuse, and blush pinks, it is white that really begs for it. If you want to try out this design trend, try accessorizing with brass planters or bowls you find at a flea market or second hand shop. Just be sure that they have simple, modern forms, and can be polished up to a high shine. Or find some silly ceramic figurines that could be improved with a solid coat of gold paint, then group 3-5 of them together for a fun and trendy look. The ongoing trend for the use of metallics in interiors manifests itself this season as a combination of both gold and silver. Broad bands of gold and silver interspersed with crisp white stripes create

a simple yet luxurious style in a modern setting. Modern interior design trends help find a fresh appreciation of existing homes, see properties through new eyes and find comfort in old rooms, decorated in chic style for 2012. Current economic situation forces people to stay where they are, adding more comfort to their home interiors and creating luxurious and relaxing rooms with impressive, personal and interesting decorating ideas. Comfortable design, elegant style, luxurious materials and bright colours are back in favor. Choose exotic materials, unique colour combinations and exciting Pure white interior design ideas for very framework personal, with a touch of peaceful and golden glam… modern home decorating. The next level of creativity will allow you to enjoy a new freedom to use bright and dark colours, mix exotic, traditional and luxurious materials, combine simple lines and adventurous interior design ideas, that exciting modern trends offer. Liberation brings unusual colour schemes and materials combination, that create modern interior design trends. Interesting and personalized interior design ideas will include shiny fabrics, sleek and glossy surfaces and vibrant colours, combined with elegant and classy gray, white, golden and silver tones.

Winter interior design Be very excited because this winter season, it is all about the traditional, mixed with flea-market finds. The decree for decorating this winter is: there are no rules. The joyful anarchy that prevailed last year – “it’s your home, do as you please” – continues, with increasingly eccentric prints, fabulous florals and bigger, bolder patterns. Alongside individualism, the key theme of the winter 2012 interior is “heirloom”. Nips and tucks in our household budgets mean that we’re craving timeless pieces that will look just as good a decade or two down the line, and retailers are granting our wish with handmade accessories and collections of stylish classics based on traditional fabrics and furnishings.

To DIY or not? The first tool of successful design is to know and embrace your own limitations! There are limits to what each of us is capable of doing. Accepting your limitations is key to a successful outcome. Contractors make better than usual money cleaning up jobs gone wrong – and sometimes people get hurt or worse. Embracing the humility to know your own weaknesses makes creation of the job plan a lot simpler – so tip # 1 – know yourself and what you can do! I personally will not: • interact with roofing, electrical, or gas connections • super-heavy lifting • plumbing • carpet installation. • Wooden flooring These occupations best left to the professionals. Some of you may be able to do some of these things, but I cannot – my budget will reflect these limitations.

What Colour is Your Home Office? Do you have a home office? If so, you should think carefully about what colour you paint it. There are always distractions when working from home, yet studies show that while some colours divert from tasks at hand, others can significantly increase a person’s productivity, concentration and motivation. Think about your job and what kind of environment you want to create. Blue can be calming and can lower your pulse rate while increasing productivity. Green creates a serene, soothing atmosphere, which can relieve stress. Red and orange promote excitement and enthusiasm. Purple is thought to promote artistic creativity. Yellow is cheerful. Light browns and greys deliver a feeling of serenity. Darker browns provide a stoic, earthy atmosphere. If you can’t decide, the safest choice might be green wich is the most popular colour for home offices. Considered to be the most balancing hue on the colour spectrum and the easiest on the eye, green is restful yet rejuvenating. While I love green, when I had a home office (my current place is so small it’s all my office!) I painted it cream. I found it relaxing, calm and the least distracting.

Winter Warmers: Bed Throws Let’s turn our attention to bedrooms and look at cost-effective ways to add warmth. Bed throws have to be the easiest winter warmer when it comes to bedding. Look out for the latest faux fur styles which are soothingly tactile and a great way to keep warm. Use your usual duvet covers sets and as the name suggests, simply throw an additional layer over the top. Opt for extra large bed throws, one size bigger than your bed, for example if you have a standard 4’6” double bed then use a king size bed throw. This will allow for plenty of overspill with the throw and help stop cool areas arising – this idea is also great for those who have to fight for their fair share of the duvet each night! Many bed throws are available in a wide range of sizes, so there’s no need to scrimp on size to get the style, pattern and colour you want. Look out for coordinating scatter cushions in faux fur to give your bed a very warm and inviting look this winter. If your feet are always cold neatly fold a bedding blanket across the foot of your bed or resort to the humble hot water bottle to keep your feet toasty warm!

5 Tips on Making an Art investment in 2012 If you’re thinking about making an art investment, 2012 is a good year for it. One can always “invest confidently in art, because an artwork will never be bankrupt.” My own advice to collectors is this: if you love it, buy it. If you choose well, one day you will be able to sell it for a profit. And if you choose very well, you won’t want to. ‘Abigail R. Esman, contributor

Not only did the art market perform better than the equity market in 2011, but it has also gone more mainstream, becoming this more accessible for investors not familiar with art investments. An art investment in 2012, though possibly rewarding, is not going to be easy. Here’s some advice on how to go about it. 1. It takes time to resell art. As an illiquid investment, an art investment requires your long-term commitment. While sometimes you can manage to sell an artwork or a painting that’s in demand in a matter of weeks, it usually takes at least a few months to resell art. 2. The art market is, ultimately, fickle. While good art from good artists tends to endure the passing of time, it’s usually the art that’s in vogue that brings the highest returns on investments. And what’s in vogue changes suddenly, and often, unexpectedly. 3. Auction houses are expensive. Buying and selling art through auction houses

in South Africa is a costly business. There are always some fees that you have to pay. Sometimes these fees are as high as 10-15% of the total price of a purchase or a resale. 4. Buy what you admire and enjoy. Investing in a painting that you would not hang on your living room wall for all your guests to see may not be a good idea. That’s because the best art investors are motivated. Owning art that doesn’t inspire you means most likely that you won’t be willing to devote much of your time buying and selling it. 5. Value is found not only in the artist, but in the quality of a given work. Always buy the best you can afford – and to do so, of course, requires, again, understanding and a certain amount of expertise in the artist’s oeuvre. Lacking this, find a very good art advisor – and by “good” I mean not only “knowledgeable,” but also one you trust. If you plan to make an art investment, 2012 is a great year to Invest.

Selecting and displaying art is an art in itself. You will definitely be appreciated for the time you invest by finding more satisfaction both in the art and in your home. If you regularly visit galleries and museums, you probably already have a good sense of what kind of art appeals to you. Having a clear idea about your art preferences is definitely a boon.

How to Select Art for Your Home Edited by Lynne Taetzsch Select art by size to fit a particular space. Art that is too large will overwhelm and art that is too small will be lost and look out of proportion. The bolder the art, the more room it needs to breathe. Measure the space you want to hang the art and leave enough “white space” so that the painting will not feel crowded. Choose one that harmonizes with the colour of your room. When selecting a painting to match color, select one or two of the boldest colors in your room and look for art that has those colors in it. You’re not looking for an exact match here. Picking up one or two of the same colors will send a message that the painting belongs in this environment. Opt for paintings that matches the style of the paintings in your room. If your house is filled with antiques, for example, you’ll want to use antique-style frames on the paintings you hang there. If you have contemporary furniture in large rooms with high ceilings, you’ll want to hang large contemporary paintings. Amend your room if the painting doesn’t suit, if you find that when you get the art home and place it on a wall or pedestal, it doesn’t work with its surroundings. If you bring a painting home and it clashes with its environment, first try hanging it in various rooms on different walls. It may look great in a place you hadn’t planned on hanging it. If you can’t find a place where the art looks its best, you may need to make some changes in the room, such as moving furniture or taking down patterned wallpaper and repainting in a neutral color. The changes will be worth making in order to enjoy the art you love. Hang correctly. As a rule, paintings should be hung so that the centre of the painting is at eye level. Sculptures may sit on the floor, a table, or pedestal. Rules should be considered guidelines only, however, so feel free to experiment. One collector hung an acrylic painting on her bedroom ceiling so she could better view it while lying down. Make the painting the centre of attraction of your room of your house by playing down the other design elements such as window coverings, carpeting, wall coverings, and even furniture. A room crowded with other colors, textures, and objects will take the spotlight away from the art. Experiment to learn what pleases you and what doesn’t. Selecting and displaying art is an art in itself. You’ll be well-rewarded for the time you invest by finding more satisfaction both in the art and in your home.

Art that is too large will overwhelm and art that is too small will be lost and look out of proportion. Measure the space you want to hang the art and leave enough ‘white space’ so that the painting will not become a part of the crowd. As a rule, paintings should be hung so that the centre of the painting is at eye level. Sculptures may sit on the floor or a table. However, you can always experiment keeping in mind the art work. The art work should become a part of your house. It should not stick out as a sore thumb. Placing art in the wrong place takes away its very essence. If you prefer to do the room first and then find the art, size and colour are the two major criteria for selecting art to fit its surroundings. For any particular space, art that is too large will overwhelm and art that is too small will just lose its relevance and presence. If you want to make art the centre of attraction, go easy on the other elements in the room like carpeting, wall covering, furniture. A room too crowded with different objects, bold colours will take away the sheen from your artwork. So, keep this in mind while putting up an art work. And remember, sometimes less is more.

Fashion

The new rules of winter fashion Consider this your official Winter wish list. Here’s how to dress for the big freeze with style – and stay warm. ioned from a large scarf or pashmina, makes for a rather fashion-forward look. Plus it’s a bit Queen’s jubilee too, which is really rather ontrend this year.

Wellies are a goner In style terms at least. To recap: the past decade saw the rehabilitation of the wellington boot. The welly went through a fashion narrative that included Kate Moss, Glastonbury, Cath Kidston, Hunter, Jordan and Jimmy Choo. But the story has finally ended with a whimper. No one cares about wellies now. Snow boots have replaced them. They’re just lovely with a skinny jeans and a tailored coat. As for Uggs, they’re were holding steady as an acceptable basic, but this week they have had a boost. A school in Pennsylvania banned them because school kids were hiding contraband phones inside them, which sort of makes them the new hoodie. Call 011 022 9309 for suppliers in the area

Looking good when it’s freezing is a niche wardrobe art. But judging by the background chatter this week – on Twitter and Facebook only a few of us are sure about what to wear when the temperature drops. Did you know that wellies are now a bit wincey? Exactly. You’re going to need our guide.

Headscarves are the new trilbies Not the most useful directive if you are the sort of woman who always feels like a plum in a hat. But after exhaustive research (looking at lots of pictures of ineffably chic women leaving the couture shows in Paris last week) I’ve concluded that an impromptu headscarf, fash-

Parkas should be worn with red nails. Or similar. Henceforth to be known as the Rashida-Jonesat-Sundance style rule. Jones wore a big parka with a furry collar in the snow, but rather than giving in entirely to the practicality of her look she had painted her nails red. The message was: “I’m relaxed enough about my look to adapt to the weather but I’m still totally fabulous.” The take-home lesson – wear last year’s padded jacket but pimp it with a spring look you couldn’t resist in Zara. Think peplums with parkas.

Embrace ‘the pile-up’ Scarf update: if you make a loop with your scarf and pull the ends through you are on a fashion hiding to nothing. “The pile-up” is the way to do scarves in 2012. Trend forensics might wish to know that the trend initially

30 | WINTER | NORTHSIDE MAGAZINE | www.thenorthside.co.za

came from menswear where Louis Vuitton designer Kim Jones showed whopping great scarves that had more looped height than length. Stylish women are at it too if the Paris Vogue set at the couture shows is anything to go by. Take a scarf as broad as a blanket and pile it high. Failing that, wear two.

Leather gloves add oomph You may have bought a coat late last year with some sort of contrast leather detailing. Be it on the sleeves or the collar. If you didn’t, then don’t bother trying to fish one out from the dregs of the sales. They were kind of flash-inthe-pan and Kerry Katona (much as I’m fascinated by her for lots of other non-sartorial reasons) has started wearing one. But leather gloves, on the other hand, make a tailored wool coat look extra sharp. Plus they’re warm, which makes them worth choosing over their woolly cousins.

Lace, one of winter’s chicest trends Look to lace blouses and mini-dresses for a glam look by day or night. This season however lovely lace doesn’t just come in traditional black – or navy for that matter – but pale shades like cream and white and the prettiest pastels – icy blue, mint green, yellow and fairy floss (al la Louis Vuitton’s stunning Autumn/ Winter 2012 collection). Or if you’re feeling really adventurous go for gilt.

Luxe leather, the Lisbeth Salander effect Tough leather - and lots of it – is set to rock the winter radar. Work the look in black, or go for luxe shades of chocolate and tan. A leather motorbike jacket, leggings, go on be brave, a chic 3/4 skirt (the new length), or even a leather shift dress will give you serious fashion cred.

borsadimoda Emerald green makes for a glamorous jewelled statement The shade of the season! Livening up the winter landscape, a bold shot of emerald courtesy of a tailored jacket, trench coat, satin shirt, or any all-out frock screams on trend.

Colour pop It’s no secret classic shades of black, grey and brown prevail in winter, but no wardrobe is complete without the necessary pop of colour. Brighten up your outfit instantly – and avoid overkill – with the help of a poppy bright scarf - go sunny yellow, bright orange, hot pink or green. Rainbow coloured jeans – think red, cobalt, orange and pink (still going strong for winter) will also help you fly the flag for colour.

In the trenches What woman doesn’t covet a classic trench in enduring camel? A can’t-live-without winter staple – whether you cover up with a fashion favourite trench, a tailored jacket, a cute pea or a sexy swing coat, there’s only one colour – camel.

emerge for this season is the peplum. Not to be feared, this new incarnation is an ever so subtle detail on dresses, jackets and skirt and top sets. Big on impact, but totally wearable even the Duchess of Cambridge has adopted the look– and when it comes to style wherever Kate treads the rest of us will be sure to follow.

Cozy knits It wouldn’t be winter without beautiful knitwear. Moving on from the bulky boyfriend styles, this season knit comes long and streamlined. Look to luxe yarns like cashmere and merino and consider a long cardigan a great alternative to a tailored jacket. Or add a take you anywhere knit dress to your wardrobe.

Camouflage Consider army accents your canvas when creating your winter wardrobe. Army greens, khaki, camel, brown and grey are the key shades for basics like slouchy pants, cargo and cropped jackets, while military inspired pieces – think satchels, pea coats, belts, boots and accessories like sunglasses will help you win the war on fashion.

As they love to say on planet fashion if you only buy one thing this winter make sure it’s ... an ankle boot. Practical but with a fashion forward edge, look for your bootie in luxe leather or chic suede (black or tan is the way to go – or why not both?). A hint of a heel (wooden will break things up) is seriously chic. Oh and in case you’ve missed it, the other boot to covet right now is the posh gumboot (yep really!). How to get great service in a restaurant every time I am often asked how I am able to get great service from waitstaff when I go out. By brandstrategy.co.za

Let me assure you it is not because they have my picture posted on the notice board under “Big Tippers” or “Friggin Blog Writers” it is because after almost 20 years of working in and with the restaurant industry I have been able to work out “What makes waiters tick”.

Hint Number 1:

Sure, big tips make for happy waiters but big tips come AFTER the meal and I want a smile and good service during the meal. So what is the secret? Actually it is not a secret at all and you are welcome to try a few of these the next time you go out.

Hint Number 2:

Smile. People simply do not smile any more. Most of the time they look bored or angry or both. Look your waiter right in the eye and smile with a bright, genuine smile. Genuine, because his or her presence means you are about to enjoy a meal– which is a whole lot better than standing in the queue at the door.

Be polite. Some people feel it is their God given right to be rude to waiters and others in service positions. Stand out from the crowd by treating your waiter with common courtesy. Say ‘please’ when you

32 | WINTER | NORTHSIDE MAGAZINE | www.thenorthside.co.za

order, and thank you. A polite ‘excuse me’ to gain attention works wonders compared to an across-the-room ‘HEY!’ Simple manners are one of the best ways of obtaining great restaurant service.

Hint Number 3: Be respectful. Diners often treat waiters as lower class citizens. This is the wrong approach, since service does not improve with condescension. Think of your waiter as an important person whose expertise you seek. Respect goes a long way in motivating good service.

Hint Number 4: Remember to empathise. Your waiter has been standing for several hours and has endured sore feet, rude guests and a hot kitchen. This person looks forward to the end of the shift. Make a comment that shows you empathize. “Wow! You guys are really buzzing today. I hope things calm down for you,” or “Gosh my back would hurt in this job. How do you do it?” This small nod to his feelings shows you see him as an equal, rather than a servant.

Hint Number 5: Use a little bit of charm. Don’t over do it, just a little twinkle. . If the waitress anticipates the need for extra napkins, thank her with a smile. If she has pretty earrings, say so. Find at least one thing you can genuinely praise. It is not a difficult task, but many of us have forgotten how to give compliments. Your waitress will appreciate receiving one.

“Big Tippers” or “Friggin Blog Writers”

Hint Number 6: Tip well. Most wait staff rely heavily on your generosity. Their livelihood depends upon tips, and give the ‘standard 10 percent’ for mediocre service. Tip good service 15 percent, and exceptional service much more. Odds are you will be back and servers remember good tippers! And one final point to ponder… before you decide to show everyone at the table just how rude and condescending you can be to a lowly waiter, REMEMBER he handles your food when you are not looking! (For me that is a good enough reason to smile and be polite).

Chocolate ‘may help keep people slim’ People who eat chocolate regularly tend to be thinner, new research suggests. By Michelle Roberts

The North Side’s Red wine for Winter

The findings come from a study of nearly 1,000 US people that looked at diet, calorie intake and body mass index (BMI) - a measure of obesity. It found those who ate chocolate a few times a week were, on average, slimmer than those who ate it occasionally. Even though chocolate is loaded with calories, it contains ingredients that may favour weight loss rather than fat synthesis, scientists believe. Despite boosting calorie intake, regular chocolate consumption was related to lower BMI in the study, which is published in Archives of Internal Medicine. The link remained even when other factors, like how much exercise individuals did, were taken into account. And it appears it is how often you eat chocolate that is important, rather than how much of it you eat. The study found no link with quantity consumed. According to the researchers, there is only one chance in a hundred that their findings could be explained by chance alone. But the findings only suggest a link - not proof that one factor causes the other. Lead author Dr Beatrice Golomb, from the University of California at San Diego, said: “Our findings appear to add to a body of information suggesting that the composition of calories, not just the number of them, matters for determining their ultimate impact on weight.”

This is not the first time scientists have suggested that chocolate may be healthy for us. Other studies have claimed chocolate may be good for the heart. Consumption of certain types of chocolate has been linked to some favourable changes in blood pressure, insulin sensitivity and cholesterol level. And chocolate, particularly dark chocolate, does contain antioxidants which can help to mop up harmful free radicals - unstable chemicals that can damage our cells. Dr Golomb and her team believe that antioxidant compounds, called catechins, can improve lean muscle mass and reduce weight - at least studies in rodents would suggest this might be so. Mice fed for 15 days with epicatechin (present in dark chocolate) had improved exercise performance and observable changes to their muscle composition. They say clinical trials are now needed in humans to see if this is the case. But before you reach for a chocolate bar, there are still lots of unanswered questions. And in the absence of conclusive evidence, experts advise caution. While there’s no harm in allowing yourself a treat like chocolate now and again, eating too much might be harmful because it often contains a lot of sugar and fat too. And if you are looking to change your diet, you are likely to benefit most from eating more fresh fruits and vegetables.

Travel July to August: This period is very dry in the bush with very cold night temperatures and therefore chilly during the early morning and late afternoon game drives. Game viewing is generally fantastic as the visibility is good and the game is concentrated around any water source. July to October is the end of the dry season and the malaria-carrying mosquitoes are dormant. July Temperature: (+/-) 9 - 26 °C August Temperature: (+/-) 12 -28 °C

If you are looking for a short getaway a little closer to home, try the Kruger National Park. Steeped in legend and history, the iconic Kruger National Park in South Africa is waiting for you to explore its vast landscapes and spectacular African wildlife. Enjoy thrilling game drives and walking safaris – find out what it is like to be close to a pride of lions, feel the excitement and intensity of a South African safari in Kruger National Park.

By mid-May most South Africans are already experts at complaining about the cold weather. But who can blame us? Having had sunshine for 6 months of the year, we’re a little bit spoiled. The scary part is that we are, just now, heading into the thick of winter, with June and July 2012 promising to deliver their best. Like being on a diet, the trick to keeping warm is keeping yourself occupied, and we don’t mean by doing your taxes. It’s no coincidence that some of SA’s best game viewing happen at this time of the year and other than heading up to the Kruger National Park there’s no better way to keep warm (and stay entertained while you wait for summer)

Although some visitors might prefer the lush vegetation of the summer months, the best time for observing African wildlife in Kruger National Park is the dry winter season. The bushveld is more open allowing for better visibility. The grass is low, the bushes and trees are sparsely leaved and because it is so dry - with no rain - the wildlife will migrate towards the water. Water holes, dams and rivers become a hive of activity and you are more likely to spot wildlife in the morning and evening as they come for a drink of water. The day temperatures in winter are pleasant but it can get quite chilly during the night-time so make sure you pack something warm when going on your afternoon/night game drives.

Own one of the finest views of the Kruger National Park ….Forever.

August & September are one of the best months of the year to

travel, particularly to the Mediterranean where conditions are perfect, with air temperatures settling down a bit, but the sea still comfortably warm enough to swim in. The best thing about this time of year is that the crowds disappear and prices tumble. There are no traffic jams or queues to get tables at restaurants. Suddenly, waiters and taxi drivers are pleased to you again. That beach that was crowded a few weeks ago – now you have it almost to yourself.

So where to go on holiday in September? Here, we guide you to the best places. If you want beach holidays, there are plenty of places in the Med where you can find perfect spots. We recommend Costa de la Luz in the south-west corner of Spain and the tiny, sleepy Greek island of Paxos. Many tour operators offer cheap holidays in September so it’s worth keeping an eye on deals. The French island of Corsica has great beaches, along with beautiful mountain countryside and authentic villages, while the Ile de Ré off the west coast of France has endless white-sand beaches, small harbours, cycle paths and great seafood. It’s one of our top holiday suggestions for September. The Balaeric islands of Mallorca and Ibiza are not known for their quiet beaches but once you get away from the big resorts you can find beautiful stretches and beautiful rural villages, quiet beaches and great villas. Puglia is in the south of Italy and has great beaches, and along with beautiful hotels and luxury self-catering trulli with pools. The islands of Sicily and Sardinia are also great for beach holidays in September. We recommend Forte Village in Sardinia and Verdura Resort in Sicily. The beaches in North Cyprus are amongst the wildest and least spoilt in the Med. Because it lies outside the Eurozone, prices are lower than in equivalent destinations. Try the Pia Bella, one of our favourite hotels, near Kyrenia. If you want to go further afield, Bermuda is beautiful in September with long sunny days, brilliant blue skies, pink sand beaches and superb hotels such as the Elbow Beach and the Fairmont Southampton which is great for families.

The Health Benefits of Drinking Lemon Water I remember first learning about the health benefits of drinking lemon water probably twenty-five years ago. By Nancy Hearn

At that time, I was told that drinking lemon water first thing in the morning was especially good for cleansing the liver. Since then, I’ve learned as a nutritionist, that lemons are also a good source of citric acid, potassium, calcium, phosphorous and magnesium. Recently I was given a large bagful of fresh, hand-picked Arizona lemons. In addition, another person asked me, “Are there any health benefits of drinking lemon water?” I took these two synchronistic events as a hint that I needed to know more about lemons. It was time to do a little more research. What I found is truly amazing. The following is a brief summary of a few of the key health benefits of drinking lemon water regularly. Medicinal Values In his book Back to Eden, Jethro Kloss explains some of the medicinal values of a lemon:

• It helps prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria and the decomposition of tissue • It assists in “cleansing the system of impurities” and will help prevent disease • It is effective at dissolving uric acid (often the cause of pain and inflammation in joints) and other poisons in the body • It can help reduce symptoms of malaria, rheumatism, gout, rickets and tuberculosis. Liver Benefits Kloss also states that lemon is an excellent stimulant to the liver, thus confirming what I had learned as a twentysomething. Lemon water liquefies the bile and helps control excess bile flow. For liver complaints, Kloss recommends drinking warm lemon juice one hour before breakfast.

42 | WINTER | NORTHSIDE MAGAZINE | www.thenorthside.co.za

A.F. Beddoe, author of Biological Ionization as Applied to Human Nutrition, writes that the liver can make more enzymes out of fresh lemon juice than from any other food. He says the primary purpose of the lemon is to: • Provide a natural strengthening agent to liver enzymes when they are too diluted • Help fix oxygen and calcium levels in the liver, which ultimately affects blood oxygen levels. Digestive Aid One of the most important benefits of drinking lemon water regularly is its effect on the gastrointestinal tract. Lemon water assists in the process of digestion and elimination. Lemon juice is similar in atomic structure to saliva, hydrochloric acid, bile and the stomach’s other digestive juices. The digestive qualities of lemon juice help to relieve symptoms of indigestion, such

as heartburn, belching and bloating. For the relief of heartburn, Kloss recommends taking a teaspoon of lemon juice in half a glass of water. Lemon water will also help to eliminate waste through the bowels more efficiently, thus preventing or alleviating constipation, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal disorders. Colds and Flu Bacteria and viruses that cause cold and flu symptoms thrive in an acidic environment in the body, due to excess stress and unhealthy foods and lifestyle. Drinking lemon water has an alkalizing effect on the body. Increasing body alkalinity is one of the key benefits of drinking lemon water. In addition, because of its antibacterial properties, lemon water will help control unhealthy bacteria. For a sore throat, Kloss recommends gargling frequently with lemon juice, diluted half and half with pure water. Gargling with straight lemon juice would be more effective, if tolerable.

However, frequent use of straight lemon juice can ruin tooth enamel. Thus it’s a good idea to rinse the mouth with pure water after gargling with straight lemon juice. Other Benefits of Drinking Lemon Water Just a few more significant health benefits of lemon water, according to Kloss and Beddoe, include:

An apple a day …

There are many delicious apple varieties available at fresh produce markets. Make it a point to try a new variety every week. Apples contain carbohydrate for energy and fibre, and are an excellent source of vitamin C. Remember the old saying …

• Helps purify the blood and will also control a tendency to bleed • Assists in lowering high blood pressure • Reduces the amount of phlegm in the body • Relieves symptoms of asthma, allergies and other respiratory problems • Nourishes brain and nerve cells due to its potassium content • Helps dissolves gallstones, calcium deposits, kidney stones, and pancreatic stones • In pregnancy, it will help build strong bones in the child.

Dreading Winter? Take Action And Feel Great Most of us dread this time of year as it means less light and colder weather. By Rosa Coelho

We quickly feel the urge to curl up at home, drink far too many cups of tea, eat more sugary foods and do very little activity. All of these changes combined often lead to a change in our mood, we don't feel quite as cheerful, we tend to socialise less and generally feel unmotivated.

It doesn't have to be this way. Take control and feel good this winter! In the months leading to summer we all hit the panic button as we realise we can no longer hide behind bulky winter clothing, we want to look good; leading in to winter you might not worry so much about looking good but what about feeling good? Do you not agree that your mental health is just as important as your physical health? Of course it is, it's even more important. This winter work on feeling good! How you wonder? It's not as difficult as you think. Simply take the following actions:

Action 1: Get Moving Studies show that anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour of exercise every day can have a positive impact on our mood. When we exercise our body releases endorphins that help us to feel happy. Action 2: Set Goals Setting goals will keep you motivated and achieving them will empower you. If you enjoy running, sign up for a race in the early spring and spend the winter training. Once you've set your goal write it down before the clocks turn back and put it somewhere where you'll see it every day; achieve your goal and be proud of your accomplishment when the clocks spring forward. Action 3: Socialise: Exercise with your friends. It will make your sessions more enjoyable and exercising with someone helps us to put in a bit more effort. Even better join a new club and meet new people. Action 4: Watch what you eat. Eat foods that are high in protein and fibre as they make you feel full, therefore less likely to reach for those sugary treats. Weight gain often leads to poor self- image; therefore the key to staying positive is maintaining or even losing weight. Don't let this winter be a repeat of the last. Take action and feel good! Feeling good in the winter will help you to look good in the summer.

7 tips for winter health How to keep your energy up, your immune system strong and your body healthy all winter long. By Dr. Joey Shulman

In winter, the sun sets earlier, a chill fills the air, and we spend less time outside being active and more time inside eating starchy and sugary foods. Our hibernating instinct doesn't keep us healthy. Rather, our immune system takes a hit, allowing winter colds and flus to grab hold.

environment for illness to strike. Turn to naturally occurring sugars found in fruit for some sweetness. If you crave chocolate, go for dark chocolate (minimum 70 per cent cocoa), which contains plant phenols that have been shown to lower blood pressure.

Luckily, there are certain things you can do to keep your energy up, your immune system strong and your body healthy all winter long.

3. Avoid added sugars In addition to causing weight gain, refined flours and sugars can suppress immunesystem function. In other words, if there is a flu or cold circulating and you go a little crazy on the white sugar (cookies, pop, candy, etc.), you're creating the perfect

6. Favour fruits and veggies A recent study showed that the majority of us eat fewer than five servings of fruits and vegetables a day — the study recommends eating five to 10 servings per day. One serving is equal to: • 1 medium-size fresh vegetable or fruit • 1/2 cup (125 mL) fresh, frozen or canned vegetables or fruit • 1 cup (250 mL) salad • 1/2 cup (125 mL) juice

1. Drink healthy fluids Sugary and caffeinated beverages can suppress immune-system function, not to mention cause weight gain and dehydration. Drinking six to eight glasses a day of water or herbal tea can keep your digestive system healthy, your weight down and your energy up. This is especially important over the winter months to help flush the system. Green and white teas are also wonderful antioxidant-rich options to keep you healthy throughout the season. 2. Get some z's Sleeping is one of the most effective ways to refuel after a stressful day. Make sure to sleep in a dark room to ensure your body properly secretes the hormone melatonin, which is believed to help repair the immune system.

system. Get adequate amounts by eating oysters, liver, lean beef, pork, turkey, lamb, lentils, pumpkin and sesame seeds, garbanzo beans and yogurt.

7. Move it Don’t succumb to inactivity this winter -- hit the yoga studio, run on the treadmill or suit up and head outdoors. A brisk walk burns calories, gets the blood flowing and increases energy.

Cut up squares and store them in your freezer. Grab one or two when you need a sweet treat. 4. Go for garlic The sulfur-containing compounds in garlic help increase the potency of two important cells of the immune system, T-lymphocytes and macrophages, which in turn help battle colds. Eat garlic raw or cooked for an immune-system boost. 5. Eat zinc-rich foods Zinc helps prevent a weakened immune

And don’t forget to watch your stress levels over the winter -- when we don’t get enough sun exposure, mood and energy tend to fluctuate. Journaling, meeting with friends, enjoying “me” time and meditating are all wonderful ways to keep yourself healthy and happy.

Develop good drinking habits

To get you into the habit of drinking water, keep a jug of water and a glass beside your bed. Make every effort to drink at least one glass before bed and one glass in the morning. Gradually build this up to two glasses, then three …

Preventing Winter Sports Injuries Tips to Stay Safe During Outdoor Sports

reflectors are intact and use safety lights or headlights whenever possible. Be aware of surroundings and remain attentive.

Sports injury advice often focuses on treatment, but prevention makes better sense. Sports injuries can happen anytime, but during the winter months, sports injuries and accidents are more common. People tend to go to extremes during the winter months; either they’re couch potatoes, or they race outside at the first nice day to go for a run. This may result in injuries or accidents. These tips, based on tips released by the SL University Medical Center offer advice for experienced athletes as well as anyone participating in winter sports.

Stay Hydrated

Reflective Clothing Is a Must for Runners, Joggers, Walkers and Cyclists Many people head outdoors after work to run, jog, walk or cycle after a long day at work. During the summertime, there’s enough daylight left to enable drivers to see people along the shoulder of the road. During the winter months, when the sun sets around 4:30 or 5 o’clock at night, chances are people are out along the road engaging in their favorite activity in the dark. Be sure to wear bright, reflective clothing. Leave the iPOD or MP3 player at home in order to hear oncoming cars, car horns, and other potential dangers. Run or walk along sidewalks whenever possible. Cyclists should be sure their bike

water bottle and drink water religiously during summer workouts, but when winter comes, they head out without thinking about hydration. Winter winds and exercise do indeed use up fluids. People who drink a lot of caffeine and alcohol may be slightly dehydrated even before they begin their exercise regimen, since these liquids are diuretics. Drink plenty of water before and after a workout, and if engaging in a vigorous workout outdoors, take along and drink water.

Avoid Sports Injuries For people who love to exercise outdoors, winter may force them inside. When switching sports,

Winter may be a great time to try a new sport. If the extreme winter weather prevent cycling or running, how about focusing on flexibility and core strength instead of cardio and endurance? Yoga, Pilates and tai chi offer gentle yet effective exercises. Swimmers who yearn for the fun summer days at the pool may find an indoor pool offering aquatic aerobics, or may find that strength training compliments their summer regimen. Try something new during winter. Exercising outdoors in winter is a pleasant way to enjoy the winter scenery and keep up fitness levels. Follow these tips and take precautions to avoid accidents and injuries.

Story from a Sunninghill Striders Running Club Runner: How I successfully completed the Comrades after turning 60 & going on pension (I had never run any race before 2012)

It all started – We were celebrating my daughter, Deborah’s running of the 2011 comrades & after a beer or three a “dare” came about between myself & Sean, that it couldn’t be that hard & that we would do it the next year. (2012). I attempted to do some running in December after my 60th birthday. My knees hurt like hell & I could manage about 100 meters before having to walk. Deborah had my running stride etc professionally evaluated by Mike SBR & bought my first “real” pair of running shoes. This was January 2012. I joined a gym & signed up with a trainer in February. Slowly my running picked up to 5km without my knees shouting at me. March, I ran an 8km time-trial one evening at Florida AC and completed the distance without walking once. April, I had to qualify for comrades. I had been entered in the 42.2km Elands Valley race & actually qualified in 4hrs 42mins. I then stepped up my training & ran 2x 10km & 1x 20km run each week. I estimated that in total I had run 300km since retiring from my desk job. Comrades. We split the 90 km into 9x 10km sectors, each having a time to achieve which calculated to an 11hr40 run. I completed each sector on time & finished the event 3 minutes ahead of my scheduled 11hr40 & never felt better. I landed up with a very sore right ITB, a few blisters, but thoroughly enjoyed the run. One point I must mention is the support that was offered me at the “30km to go” point from the Sunninghill Striders’ support team manning the gazebo. Thanks guys for a great experience & a big thanks to Deborah & her positive attitude. Sean who teamed up with me helped prove it was possible with limited experience. In total I ran a 1x 8km time-trial, 1x 42.2 km qualifier & 1x 89 km Comrades. Howard Bates - No19382 NB: Howard’s daughter achieved 08h38 in this years Comrades.

Is it time to sell your car? by Interest.com

Life is sweet, but it would be a lot sweeter if our cars and trucks would warn us when heart-stopping repair bills or inevitable replacements lay in wait just around the corner. Most of us, however, need help recognizing when it's time to get rid of our ride - whether it's a 13-year-old Mazda convertible, a three-year-old Toyota Corolla, or brand-new MercedesBenz CLK. That's why we've come up with five smart moves to help you make a hard but satisfying decision. Smart move 1. Do a lifestyle reality check. "Our homes reflect who we are, and our cars reflect who we wish we were," so the sad (but true) saying goes. Here's where a cold look in the lifestyle mirror can go a long way. Ask yourself (or better yet, ask a friend), "Is what I drive serving my current needs?" Your Mazda MX5 convertible may have made you the King and Queen of Cool when you were single, but when you started adding little princes and princesses to the castle, that tiny two-seat sports car became royally impractical. Suck it up, daddy, and get a midsize Toyota Fortuner. Smart move 2. Do an economic reality check. Make sure you own a vehicle you can realistically afford. Factor in every expense, not just the monthly payment. Include the price of insurance and maintenance, broken down to a monthly average, and don't forget to calculate the terror of fuel costs. Total them up and you've found the true cost of owning your car. If you can realistically meet this number without breaking a sweat or missing a meal, month in, month out, bravo.

But if you're struggling to keep up with the bills, and spending R5000 or more a month on your car or truck, you should replace it with a new ride that costs more like R3 000 a month to own. When making this decision, follow a simple rule of thumb: Monthly payments shouldn't exceed 8% of your gross monthly income. If, for example, that's R20 000, then your payments should be no more than R1 600 a month.

Smart Move 3. Pay heed to the "GutWrench-In-Its-Presence" Effect. If merely thinking about driving your car threatens to double you over in pain, get rid of it. No joke. There is no case to be made for accepting 25 000 km’s of anger a year. If you hate your vehicle -- really hate it -- and have no practical considerations that trump your decision making, then dump it, sell it, or trade it in. Life is still too short. Smart move 4. Beware the "My Mechanic Knows My Credit Card Number by Heart" Syndrome. If your car has been to the shop three times over the past year for repairs -- even legitimate repairs -- it's not a normal, healthy vehicle.

We live in the glory day of automobiles, where virtually every model offers breathtaking quality and reliability. The cliche is that there aren't any bad cars anymore, but the truth is there really aren't even any average cars anymore. Planned obsolescence, the automotive industry's dastardly plan to design and build cars to last only as long as the warranty, is a myth. Bad luck, however, is not. Your vehicle may be a "Monday morning" car or an early production run of a new model (never a good bet for high quality -- new models always need time to get their teething problems out of the way). For owners of older, very used cars, this is the rule to follow: If you must make three repairs during any 12-month period that add up to the resale value of the car, cut your losses and run. You can find out how much your car is worth visit www. autotrader.co.za or your nearest dealership. Smart Move 5. Keep an eye out for the two symptoms of big trouble. Just remember: Blue smoke = Bad news. Blue smoke out the exhaust means you're burning oil, which very likely indicates the oncoming need for an engine replacement. Never cheap. Another major symptom worth paying eyes-wide-open attention to is when you notice a bit of slipping between gear changes in the automatic transmission. If you notice the engine revving without any appreciable increase in speed, that's what a slipping transmission feels like. This problem is not quite as urgent as the engine, nor quite as expensive, but transmission replacements are never a bargain. Either one means it's time to sell.

Parent’s Place

The Top 10 Things Children Really Want Their Parents To Do With Them too many activities and are in turn becoming less in touch with themselves and their families. In addition, my students told me they really wished for more time to “just play”. Of course many of them enjoy their extra curricular activities, but it is not necessary they said to be allowed to do everything. What they enjoyed most, and what made their hearts happiest was when their mothers did simple things for or with them. Here is a list of the top ten things students around the world said they remembered and loved most about their mothers.

What do you think matters most to your children? You driving them to lessons and practices, or is it the smile and hug you greet them with after school? If you guessed the latter, you are correct. Sixteen years of teaching and giving the same assignment every Mother’s Day has led me to the exact same conclusion. You see, every Mother’s Day I would ask my students to give me advice on being a mother. They were to think about things their mother or guardian did for or with them that made them feel happy or loved. The classroom would go silent as the students wrote intensely for longer than they had ever written before. Often smiles would appear on their faces as they reflected on the happy experiences they were remembering. After reading their responses I would add

to my list all the ideas they mentioned. Surprisingly, many of the responses were the same. Year after year, in every country I taught, and in every type of demographic, the students were saying the same things and had the same message: It’s the small things that their mothers did that meant the most and that they remembered. Many moms today feel as if they are not good mothers unless they are racing around, shuttling their children from lessons, to practices and back to lessons again. I’ve had mothers tell me that they want to give their children every opportunity they did not have. While this thinking might bring the mother some comfort, it really does not do the same for their child who is potentially feeling overextended, stressed and tired. After speaking endlessly about this topic with my students, it became clear to me that children today are involved in

1. Come into my bedroom at night, tuck me in and sing me a song. Also tell me stories about when you were little. 2. Give me hugs and kisses and sit and talk with me privately. 3. Spend quality time just with me, not with my brothers and sisters around. 4. Give me nutritious food so I can grow up healthy. 5. At dinner talk about what we could do together on the weekend. 6. At night talk to me about about anything; love, school, family etc. 7. Let me play outside a lot. 8. Cuddle under a blanket and watch our favorite TV show together. 9. Discipline me. It makes me feel like you care. 10. Leave special messages in my desk or lunch bag. Children are incredibly wise and tend to see the world more simply than we do. Perhaps it is time we start taking their advice. Maybe we would all feel a little less stressed and be satisfied with the fact that doing little things really is… good enough.

Lunch Boxes for Winter THERMOFLASK

Invest in a good Thermoflask as you can use it for a variety of things this winter – make sure it does not leak. • Warm hot chocolate, Milo, Horlicks, tea on a cold winter’s morning when you drop your child off early at school. • Leftover soup from the night before that your child can just sip on during school in the morning. These soups are obviously smooth soups like Tomato soup, butternut & sweet potato, potato & leek, carrot & orange. • If your child is sick this winter then send them to school with some freshly squeezed lemon & honey in the flask, this will ease the cough and chest. • Smoothies – if you are in a rush in the morning make a smoothie and your child can drink that on the way to school. This is always a fabulous way to get the fruit in for the day.

Movie Reviews Mad Buddies The latest comedy adventure motion picture from South Africa’s legendary prankster, Leon Schuster, is “Mad Buddies”, a sidesplitting romp directed by Gray Hofmeyr from a screenplay co-written by Leon Shuster and Gray Hofmeyr, and produced by Helena Spring. Schuster heads up the cast that includes his long-standing co-star, Alfred Ntombela (“Oh Schuks I’m Gatvol”, “Mama Jack”), as well as Kenneth Nkosi (“White Wedding”, “Tsotsi”) and the beautiful Tanit Phoenix (“Spud”, “Straight

The incompetent buffoons not only botch their mission, but also cause each other physical harm when Beast accidentally shoots off Boetie’s toe, and Boetie has Beast chased into a pit by a lion. Years later, when a limping Boetie encounters Beast at the wedding of the daughter of the Minister of Tourism, “Mda” (Alfred Ntombela), they release their pent-up anger and the commotion ruins the wedding. Before we know it, hours have slipped by without us accomplishing anything beyond downing a cup of coffee, dashing off a few emails, and dishing with our coworkers around the water cooler. By the time the workday wraps up, we’re so exhausted and defeated that any motivation to accomplish something in the evening has vanished. But according to time management expert Laura Vanderkam, mornings hold the key to taking control of our schedules. If we use them wisely, we can build habits that will allow us to lead happier, more productive lives. Drawing on real-life anecdotes and scientific research that shows why the early hours of the day are so important, Vanderkam reveals how successful people use mornings to help them accomplish things that are often impossible to take care of later in the day. I can’t do that.’’ Gareth Cliff likes to shoot from the hip. Whether on air or judging a trembling Idols contestant, he’s always quick with a point of view. In Gareth Cliff on Everything, Gareth throws caution to the wind and writes about all those subjects that make him glad, sad or simply mad. • Cows? The perfect steak-making machines. • Tarts? Good to have around, even if there’s no conversation to be had. • Our President? A bargain-bin, most-things-to-most-people, least offensive compromise • Nigella Lawson? She’s gotta go before there’s an orgasm on set • Ancestor worship? Outdated and primitive • Wine expo? A boring waste of time: can you imagine how devoid of meaning your life has to be before you decide to spend FIVE HOURS with the most pretentious people on earth. • Death? Hey, we’ve all got to go sometime! • BEE? Next subject • Children? No thanks. Only when I have my own. • The British Empire? Sorry, it’s fallen. • The Pope? You better read about it. Want to know more? Dip in to where Gareth takes on all comers with his brash, iconoclastic and pointed musings. It’ll engage, enrage and derange you all at once.

Sunninghill – A prime location By Andy Speirs

The property broker’s mantra ‘location, location, location’ could have been especially penned for Sunninghill. Situated close to one of the country’s most important ‘spaghetti junctions’ – the Buccleuch Interchange where two of Africa’s busiest roads intersect – supplied by no less than three separate off- & onramps serving the highway network, Sunninghill is located plumb centre in the South African heartland. Since the recent highway network upgrades, it’s now even more accessible than before. But that’s not all. With the envisaged completion of the K60 – part of the provincial road network – accessibility will further enhanced. So it’s hardly surprising to find that greater Sunninghill is also one of Eskom’s fastest growing areas. And, in the midst of these burgeoning suburbs, is to be found Eskom’s corporate headquarters. Eskom is not the only company to lo-

cate its South African headquarters in Sunninghill. So too has Massmart, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Fluor, DRA and a host of others. You may then be forgiven to assume that Sunninghill’s success will inevitably be

at the expense of the very same natural environment that made it such a sought-after area for weekend retreats early last century. Not so. That’s where Sunninghill Community comes into play. Sunninghill Community is more than a residents’ association. It’s a proactive organisation supported by wide community interests that seek not only to support the South African economy by

maximising our area’s locational attributes but is committed to conserve our natural assets and promote their responsible usage. That’s why, in partnership with City Parks, we’ve planted over 3 000 indigenous trees over the last two years. That’s why we’re clearing up the Sandspruit. That’s why we’re partnering River Rangers to help increase security along the spruit. That’s why we are determined, in partnership with our friends in Paulshof, to turn the area around the confluence of the Sandspruit and Braamfonteinspruit into a community park of great note. Not only does Sunninghill attract businesses, young upwardly mobile couples, but also retired folk. We are a diverse community. This is what enriches us. And it’s only by continuing to work together that we’re going to make our community even greater. Sunninghill Community will be putting forward various exciting initiatives in the months to come. Rawson director sees first signs of an

Upturn in the Residential property Market The many property trend watchers looking for signs of an upturn in the market will be encouraged by the data published in the latest FNB estate agents’ survey, says Sean McCauley, a director of Rawson Properties. “Much of what this survey has to tell us,” said McCauley, “is exactly the news we were waiting for: in the last quarter (as compared to the previous quarter) the average time that houses have been on the market has been cut from 17 to 15 weeks; the number of houses sold at less than the asking price is now 88% as compared to 91%; the average difference between the asking and the achieved price has improved from 13% to 11%; and first time homebuyers now comprise 25% of the total, the highest we have seen for a long while. These are all highly encouraging “pointers”.” Similarly, said McCauley, agents are for the first time in several years now reporting stock shortages which, it can be assumed, are due to increased demand as well as an increased reluctance to sell (a sure sign that tough economic conditions are easing up). Latest figures from State organisations, said McCauley, also point towards an upturn taking place, albeit slowly: consumer confidence is now up and levels of employment are now rising. Asked how his Rawson franchises are faring, he said that they report that the banks, although still very careful, are easing up on their lending criteria and there is a new willingness to buy rather than wait and see. Other encouraging signs of a revival, said McCauley, are that attendances at show houses are almost twice what they were last year, there has been a noticeable upswing in the number of buy offers received and Rawsons’ sales figures in the first quarter of 2012 were 30% up on the average for 2011.

Our goal is to sell your property at the right price, in the shortest possible time.
