O

ur first edition in 2015 remains vivid in my memories and I am deeply grateful for the support of those early adapters (gallerists, exhibitors, guests but also collectors and artists) who then made the effort to help us build what we now know as the only photography art fair in the entire German speaking world. Back then, something was set into motion which still strives today. The overwhelming success of the fair pushed us forward to find a larger yet still intimate space – and we now call the Volkshaus Basel our home for the second time in a row for this third edition. We are delighted to renew our partnership with the extraordinary people who run Volkshaus with their small, enthusiastic team, just like ours. This third edition confirms our aim to provide an outstanding and authentic profile of the various contemporary photographic positions – or how Forbes put it in a recently published article about photo basel, “to get a sense of what’s trending in the photography world.” photo basel 2017 is the most international - as well as the largest edition to date - with exhibitors coming from 16 different nations from 5 continents, showing works from far more than one hundred artists. This year’s content is defined by many works strongly identifying with the current world issues and in their aim to bring new reflections and new points of view on current events. Furthermore, we are proud to showcase young, upcoming artists which are brought in dialogue with more established artists; interesting discoveries await you! I am wishing you inspiration and courage, may your stroll through photo basel inspire you to find your true calling – or just an incredible piece of art! Faithfully yours, Sven Eisenhut Founding Director

AB43 Contemporary

For almost twenty years now, we have been closely involved in the art world, working with artists in Europe, North and South America and Asia. Following projects of cultural exchange in Dubai we decided in 2003 to place the focus on the contemporary art scene of the Middle East and the Arab world. We are one of the few galleries with this portfolio in the German-speaking world. Over the years, we have made a name for ourselves and are regarded as trustworthy contacts and experts of the specific art scene of Middle East, the Arab world and especially Iran - not only for Switzerland, but also for our neighboring countries. AB stands for “Across Borders and shows the initiative of Heidi and Franz Leupi to promote a cultural exchange. A richly composed programme of exhibitions and well placed art fairs reflect a wide spectrum of art showing different and unique techniques. Booth: 17 Artists

Baudoin Lebon

The Baudoin Lebon Gallery opened its doors in 1976. Today, in the third district of Paris. The main feature of the gallery is an obvious individuality, sometimes difficult to defend because it is totally outside of trends and fashions. Baudoin Lebon is involved in very different works of art (painting, sculpture, photography, installation), and shows, in its artistic choices, an obvious individuality without any consideration to comfort or conformity. This diversity reveals an unclassifiable gallery, a curiosity and a wide open state of mind. Booth: 19 Artists

Bildhalle

The gallery Bildhalle, founded by Mirjam Cavegn in 2013, deliberately takes on the responsibility of a long-standing Swiss tradition regarding photography and its distribution as an artistic medium. Thus, it represents outstanding classic and contemporary positions with the necessary consequence. In the interplay between selected established photographers of the 20th Century and those of a younger generation that aims to keep extending the medium, Mirjam Cavegn shapes an ambitious gallery program with the objective to positively influence the reception and recognition of artistic photography through solo and group exhibitions as well as international art fair participations. Her previous extensive experiences in developing photo books for an international publishing house and as photo editor for various media companies have helped Mirjam Cavegn as much with the commercially successful implementation of her gallery program as did her confident instincts and her deep fascination with photography in general. She presents the medium in a new light at her beautiful space at Zurich’s Stauffacherquai and, in just a few years, has established Bildhalle has one of today’s most respected galleries for photography in Switzerland. Carlos Caamaño Proyecto Fotografico is an independent initiative created in 2008 with the intention of supporting and disseminating Peruvian photographic creations. Since its inception, the project has been focusing on the production and curating of exhibitions, and the editing of publications. The project is not a conventional gallery. It is however a dynamic horizontally managed platform, which seeks to circulate photographic contents generated by photographers represented through different channels, such as alternative exhibition spaces, cultural centres, art fairs, museums, publications, and digital media. With a visual proposal, which is between author´s documentary and conceptual photography, the thematic focus is based on the transformation of society and collective memory.

France www.galeriedix9.com

Located in Le Marais in Paris, Galerie Dix9 opened its doors by the end of 2007 Helene Lacharmoise, after initially studying political sciences, turned to art and specialized in contemporary art and cinema during her recent studies at the Ecole du Louvre and at the Sorbonne in Paris. Pursuing a consistent and personal line, the gallery puts the emphasis on the artist’s vision and its relation to the medium used. Nevertheless the gallery has a clear photographic bent. The choice of artists is determined by a true fit between them and the gallery. Their canvas is reality. Their work is about the dimension of time, whether in the intimate, social or political sphere, concerned with evolving societies, caught between past and future, delusion and objectivity. Memory and forgetfulness. Image and identity.

Parallel to the exhibitions in the main show room, the gallery presents a different exhibition format in what is called the Cabinet. In this context and in collaboration with independent curators the gallery shows selected positions in the expanded field of photography. Galerie Esther Woerdehoff

France www.ewgalerie.com

Established in an old sculpture studio of the Montparnasse district, the Galerie Esther Woerdehoff is an essential address in Paris for photography amateurs and collectors. Showcasing six to eight exhibitions every year on its walls, the gallery participates in numerous art fairs in France and worldwide, and regularly collaborates for exhibition projects with public and private partners. For 20 years on the Paris artistic scene, Esther Woerdehoff presents her favorites, reveals new talents and cultivates a heritage of great names in modern photography. She recently acquired the Karlheinz Weinberger estate and is promoting the exceptional body of work by this Swiss counter-culture photographer. In the gallery, the classic beauty of René Groebli, Chema Madoz or Monique Jacot’s black and white prints mix with PUTPUT or Simone Kappeler’s experimental researches or the documentary point of view, full of emotion of Thomas Jorion or Martin Essl. Some artists, such as Elene Usdin, Iris Hutegger and Nikolas Tantsoukes go further and ruffle the idea of photography, by designing unique pieces, transformed with embroidery, painting or collage. With an unlimited curiosity, the Gallery Esther Woerdehoff proposes to discover the diversity and creativity contemporary photography can offer.

Galerie Monika Wertheimer

Galerie Monika Wertheimer was founded in 2001. The gallery space vastly improved since those early days, and looking back it is hard to believe that the artists accepted to exhibit in the tiny room that was the gallery space until 2005. That year, Galerie Monika Wertheimer moved to its present day location, a light-filled space in a former brick factory in Oberwil, just outside of Basel. Surrounded by over 70 creative ateliers of all kinds, the gallery has found the ideal place to display emerging photographic art. The aim of the gallery remains to discover and support the work of promising photographic talent (mostly Swiss, but not exclusively), often giving them their first opportunity to exhibit their works at a professional level and to be introduced to a select audience of regional, national, and international collectors. Switzerland www.fhnw.ch/hgk

The Art Institute is an important institution for artists’ education, locally and worldwide. Its name stands for a long and complex history of becoming a place where artists teach artists. A place where practice determines thinking, decisions and conversations around the nature of doing in art. The name also names a very specific way of teaching collectively. The Institute has for decades insisted on the radical re-imagining of art academy conventions positioning issues such as nature, gender and race at the core of our curricula, understanding that all media matter and all languages are alive. The Art Institute pursues a mandate: to probe, question and imagine what the nature of art practice could be on the verge of the next society. Methods appear along this path - they are never there beforehand. Complexity is a substance we embrace.

mc2gallery

mc2gallery opened in 2009 in Milan by an idea of Claudio Composti (gallerist and now Art Director and Administrator of mc2gallery) and Vincenzo Maccarone, young collector and owner of mc2gallery. The gallery was initially situated in Viale Col di Lana, not far from the suggestive Darsena area. The headquarter moved to a former tannery in the fascinating location of Navigli after four years, in 2013. The gallery name takes spark from the Einstein theory E=MC2, in other words the sinergy with whom we create and share the Culture. The gallery has always been very close to the photo field, but it is not prevent in considering other artistic paths such as painting, video art and sculpture. mc2gallery is a reference point in Italy by now, either for well-known international master of photography photographers exhibitions or for the scouting and promotion of young rising Italian photographers. The gallery takes part in Italian and international fairs and collaborates with museums or public institutions and with foreign or Italian galleries to promote its artists.

Photon Gallery

Photon Gallery – Centre for Contemporary Photography was established in 2003 in order to present and promote the contemporary photo and video art from Central and Southeast Europe. In 2005 we established the Festival Photonic Moments – Month of Photography as a biennial event with the average of 30 exhibitions as well as strong side program. In 2013 Photon has expanded its activities abroad and opened a permanent gallery space in Vienna, which recently moved to the central position of Vienna behind the Museum’s Quartier. With the exhibition for photo basel we would like to present three artists whose works are not “classical” photography, but rather derived from photography or serve as a starting point for questioning about the nature of photography and it’s affinities to the other media. Selected and presented works are revealing disperse, diverse creative strategies, relatively remote from the photographic medium. Such “mixed-media” works relate to the photographic medium on several different levels. They explore the ways in which photography penetrates other art fields, mostly painting, sculpture, performance and installation art. Booth: 22

Podbielski Contemporary

Germany www.podbielskicontemporary.com

Pierre Andre Podbielski established Podbielski Contemporary in January 2011 in the heart of Berlin, Mitte. The emphasis of Podbielski Contemporary’s program is to represent a wide range of artists who narrate the geopolitics of the Balkans, the Middle East, Italy and Germany through transcultural perspectives. In the last five years since its inception, Podbielski Contemporary has held 5 exhibitions per year and attended a number of international art fairs, including Rome Road to Contemporary, London Art 13, Artissima 2013/2014/2015, MIA Fair Milan 2011-2015, MIA Singapore 2014, Art Paris 2015 and Context Art Miami 2015. Its main focus is to document geopolitical issues seen from an artistic perspective. Podbielski Contemporary seeks to promote, besides exhibitions, catalogues designed and published for each show and to address its work to international private and museum collections. Its founder strongly believes that a gallery, besides representing artists and promoting their works in the optimal way, should serve as a platform for the exchange of ideas about art and culture. Raffaella de Chirico Arte Contemporanea

Italy www.dechiricogalleriadarte.com

Raffaella De Chirico Arte Contemporanea gallery was founded in 2011 by Raffaella De Chirico who focused her program of exhibits on the production and realization of projects previously unseen in Italy for the most part, focusing on artists under the age of 40 who had already distinguished themselves for their studies and artistic work outside of Italy. The same principle is applied to the historicized artists represented, with particular regard to those whose studies stood out in 70s and 80s. A constant search for the “then/now” is the common thread that characterizes the attention to semantics and conceptual minimalism, looking for new production materials and for photography with a social and current events impression. The end result is the search for a dialogue with the past, determined to unravel the peculiarities of the present in an attempt to stimulate discussion and dialogue. Therefore the development of the gallery’s international program is twofold: it is geared toward participation at international fairs (Basel, Mexico City, New York, London, Paris), as well as toward the collaboration with Italian cultural institutes and foundations while simultaneously working with artists whose international visibility can give added value to the gallery on the national scene. vfg Nachwuchsförderpreis

Switzerland www.vfgonline.ch

The vfg Nachwuchsförderpreis (Award for Promising Talents) is an annual award which is produced by the vfg (association of creative photographers). The award can be understood as motivation and as a stepping stone on the path to the future for Switzerland’s young photographers. Photography as a working field has been going through a change in the last years. While print medias as a classic employer are getting rare, there are new forms and opportunities regarding photography. This transition can also be seen at the vfg award. There are more and more conceptual works and series in the submissions. The catalogues as well as the exhibitions, that are held throughout Switzerland and in neighboring countries, build the centerpiece of the vfg Nachwuchsförderpreis. Through the numerous promising contacts that the organization has, new possibilities arise for the winners. As an organizer who are committed to emerging photographers they do not and cannot - together with sponsors, enthusiasts and friends – afford a standstill. In summer 2017, their number has been increased to over 200: talented photographers which have, after 20 years of continuity of the Swiss Young Photographers Award, received a platform to present their work to a broader public. Every year, a professional jury selects the most promising young photography artists from Switzerland, offering them an artistic steppingstone. Among them are internationally renowned photographers like Sabrina Gruhne (2015), Joël Tettamanti (2013), Andrin Winteler (2013), Audrey Piguet (2013), Matthieu Gafsou (2008),Tayio Orato & Nico Krebs (2006), Reto Albertalli (2003), and many more. Today, all of them are established artists, whose work is displayed in museums and galleries all over the world.

VisionQuesT 4rosso

Italy www.visionquest.it

VisionQuesT was created in 2009 with the sole intent to promote and divulge photography in all its aspects, especially in Italy. It still is the only gallery space in the city of Genoa and one of the few in the country working exclusively with photography. The space officially opened with the exhibition of the famous Italian photographer and photojournalist Mario De Biasi “Ieri, Oggi” (Yesterday, Today). We set up and curate exhibitions, we organize lectures and workshops, meetings with photographers, curators, critics, writers, book presentations, and we collaborate closely with National Museums and galleries. The name VisionQuesT comes from the Native American traditional culture and it is a rite of passage, a cry for a vision. Usually a journey into the wilderness seeking personal and spiritual guidance, an inner revelation - a vision – that grants profound meaning and direction to life. To carry this quest, the same sense of vision, towards a place where different journeys into photography can be seen and enjoyed by all. widmertheodoridis

Switzerland www.0010.ch

Beyond photography widmertheodoridis pursues artistic positions from the broader regional periphery, that have the potential to compete in a national and international environment. Young and established artists from the fields of photography, drawing, sculpture and video present peaceful and provocative works that also receive broad attention at the fairs. The motivation of widmertheodoridis to show exciting and extraordinary positions far away from the urban centers takes on an unusual yet no less interesting relevance. This solitary location emphasizes on the one hand the original profile of the gallery and on the other hand it underlines the uniqueness of the represented artistic works. The new gallery premises consist of a contemporary designed building, an outdoor space for installations and the newly renovated hay barn for installations and video projections. The booth concept for photo basel 2017 comprises three artists who sound out the medium of photography in their own unique way: Simon Kappeler masterly captivates the magic of cyanotype landscapes from the south. Andreas Fux’s stunning large-size hand-knotted carpet depicts the classic beauty of a young man. This project is a cooperation with RUG STAR Berlin.
