Building progress
16th August 2013
Aesthetic design created by nailing Oregon finish to formwork and pouring the concrete against it. After around 2 weeks the wall is stripped
11th October 2013
Reinforcement mesh provides tensile strength to cocnrete, lessening the likelihood of cracks forming
Concrete steps at the entrance of pavilion
Timber formwork maintains shape of concrete while it sets
Steel I-beams supporting roof structure
Steel Z purlins as secondary roof support: light, easy to install with corrosion-resistant zinc coating. Steel Frame: while expensive, enables precise and fast construction Steel window mullions
Laminated timber columns supporting steel I-beams. Used for aesthetic purposes with similar strength properties to steel.
*Main structure
Stained Laminated Veneer Lumber external fireplace wall adds to aesthetic appeal of the building. It is created using the tongue-and-groove lining. This method of connecting timber slats is tight fitting, aesthetically pleasing and has enough surface area for adhesives. Laminated Veneer Lumber is beneficial in terms of economical decisions about the building as it is cheaper than timber. However, the toxins in its glues are flammable and therefore are not very fire resistant which raises a concern in using this material as an external fireplace wall.
