HOTEL CORRIDOR Asymmetrical Mystery Maze

The project started with an idea to explore the mystery of light that can be created by artificial light sources. Mirror maze in Camera Obscura beacame the inspirational starting point for making the interior of the Hotel Corridor.

Mirror Maze. Camera Obscura. Edinburgh.

Mystery created by Light. 5

HOTEL CORRIDOR Asymmetrical Mystery Maze

Concept: Asymmetrical Mystery Maze shown through the use of perspective light projection from the appertures in the walls reflected in the mirror to create the mystical disguise atmosphere.

Model of the Hotel Corridor shows a play of light creating the mystery atmosphere.

6

Light coming from the apertures in the corridor wallsand the mirrordoors highlight the atmosphere of mystery and enhance the visual texture of the interior. Use of mirroron the front walltotally transforms the atmosphereadding the endless confusement to the interior perception.

7

HOTEL CORRIDOR Asymmetrical Mystery Maze

8

The interaction of light, shadows and reflection emphasizes the instability of the interior presumably created by the up-side-down colour scheme. The main issue for making such an effect and not to have simple stripes look is to find the appropriate source of artificial light. 1. a line of strong spots or projectors can be hidden in the niches/ apertures to produce this effect. 2. Strong LED lightning can be used as I found in street lamps. They can be arranged in lines and easily hidden in the niches/ apertures.

HOTEL LOBBIES Hotel precedent research

Following a new wave of creatively designed hotels in London I was to explore the lobbies distinctive styles, seating groups arrangements and layouts.

11

HOTEL LOBBIES Hotel precedent research

Rosewood hotel is a hotel of unique design and decor. It is the place where luxury things match the contemporary design ideas and decor. The use of expensive finishing materials does not stand loud out of the whole concept. Use of mirrors creates the illusive atmosphere from different viewing positions. Zoning comfortably separates the dining area and reception.

12

13

HOTEL LOBBIES Hotel precedent research

The London Edition Hotel is one of the hotels with luxury design, beautiful decor and expensive finishing materials. Marble, columns, statues, paintings distinguish this hotel from all the others and intrigue at the same time by the use of sophisticated contemporary art objects like the mirror egg. Each seating group is designed differently varying from big sofas, corner sofas and traditional grandfathers armchairs. Dining zone also has variations in seating arrangements always giving the clients the privacy feeling.

14

15

HOTEL LOBBIES Hotel precedent research

Sanderson Hotel represents a shocking mixture of colours, different style furniture and not matching things. The layout of the hotel lobby has the only difference from other hotels by having bar separated from the main zone of reception.

16

17

HOTEL LOBBIES Hotel precedent research

Hoxton Holborn hotel is designed for those people who got tired of traditional luxury hotels and are looking for a fresh atmosphere. It is more than a place to eat, drink and work. You have a chance to be a part of a big city meeting the locals in the bar and participating in amazing events. You will feel different! You won’t feel excluded you will be a part of London and its cultural life. Rough concrete wallsand the use of different textures create the atmosphere of loft and factory look.

18

Linea circulation with dining area and working areaplaced separately to relax and not to be disturbed.

19

HOTEL LOBBIES Hotel precedent research

Blake Hotel Design surprises by great contrast of design between the lobby, restaurant zones and the rooms. You would never expect to find such interesting versatile room decor after entering the dark, narrow and congested lobby. “It is like travelling without a plane.(Graham ) you experience different cultures and atmospheres while walking around it. Dining zone is cleverly set separately downstairs having small tables arrangements and big sofas for chill-outs.

HOTEL LOBBY Lobby as a machine Designing my Hotel Lobby I wanted to go bold and create something unexpectedly huge and rough. I researched the constructivists’ works and their fascination by the machinery design.

Hotel lobby represents steel manufacturing process: 1. Furnace - reception ( movement starts at this point) 2,3. Metal Casting - waiting zone (hotel guests wait at this point before continuing the movement) 4. Rolling mill - dining zone ( different use of cogs and mechanisms to continue working with metal guests dine in couples and in big companies adjusting. The space is working well for both activities.) 5. Casting on upper levels.

HOTEL LOBBY Lobby as a machine Seating group When creating the seating group I looked thoroughly at metal works following step in steal manufacture: casting, rolling mill. Metal rolling is often the first step in creating raw metal forms. The ingot or continuous casting is hot rolled into a bloom or a slab, these are the basic structures for the creation of a wide range of manufactured forms. Blooms typically have a square cross section of greater than 6x6 inches. Slabs are rectangular and are usually greater than 10 inches in width and more than 1.5 inches in thickness.

JOHN BURN’S PRIMARY Assembly and Sport Hall Redevelopment INTEGRATION John Burn’s Primary is one of the ordinary primary school in the UK with a big multinational comunity. School administartion has already put a lot of effort trying to integrate the students of different cultural backgrounds into the school extra-curricular learning process by organizing Family Science Days, Food fairs, etc. The idea of implementing new activity “global learning” into school extracurricular time-table has been a big issue for discussion in British education. After studying thoroughly governmental documentation: Global learning in Primary schools in England, Aims and values in Primary education, I decided to introduce this activity to John Burn’s School. The use of global learning in Primary schools enhances pupils’ awarenessand interactions with diversity, both for schools with a diverse cultural intake and also for those with little diversity.

INTEGRATION is the concept of my project. The aim is to integrate different cultures into the certain school community through implementing a new activity to the school extracurriculum: GLOBAL LEARNING. It implies international food fairs, festivals, sport competitions, international dance, craft introduction. To succseed in it we would need to adjust the space of essembly and sport hall to this need.

Diagram shows that school hall that is used for assembly and for sport is quite spacious and is well lit by the day light coming through the skylight windows. On the other hand, the space is poorly used and organized: - Wall frames are out of date and not apealing to kids to explore and to use. -The hall is filled with sport equipment that is kept at the back of the hall eating up the space that can be used for sport and other activities. -Stage is poorely presented and not movable to give space for sport activities.
