MitigatingRisksandStabilizing Challenges
Theyear2022isalmostatitsend.Ayear wherewebouncedbackfromthe pandemic.Thepandemicasitselfhada majorimpactontheworldandplayedas acatalysatorforrapiddigitalization.More andmorecompaniesaimtohavea global,butcentraldriven,ITsystem,to operatefullydigitalizedand synchronized.Animplementationlike thatcreatesalotofrisksandchallenges throughoutthewholeorganization. Fortunately,riskscanbemitigated throughprojectassurance,whichaimsto reducetheriskstoanacceptablelevelby lookingatthecosts,timeandquality factorsthatinfluencetheproject. Nextto,ormaybeinaccordancewith,
digitalization,societydesirestobebetter preparedinthefutureforsimilar pandemics,inspecificwiththeusageof advancedinformationtechnology(IT). Thisisparticularlydifficultsincemany differentcontrolorgans(bothnational andlocal)comeintoplaywithdifferent functionalities,whiletheyhavetousethe sameITinfrastructure.Besides,one shouldnotonlythinkoutofthe perspectiveofthepreviouscrisis, COVID-19,wherethefocuswason preventingcontaminationthroughthe air,accordingtoMariskadeKort.“The nextpandemiccouldconcernfoodfor example,whichresultsindifferent crucialstakeholders.”Thisarticle

SeekingBalance
Atthebeginningoftheyear,KPMG employeeswerestillworkingfromhome. Gently,peoplearecomingbacktothe office,whilemanyenjoythebenefitsof telecommuting.Corporatesarestill seekingtheoptimalbalancebetween thesetwo.EmployeesofKPMG,suchas KoenCrooymans,arehighlyaffectedby thepoliciesoftheirclients,regardlessof theapproachfromKPMGitself.TheSAP implementationthathisteamis currentlyworkingon,touchestheclient
fully,whichentailsthatthewhole companyhastoadaptandchange.The goalistoadaptbusinessprocesses towardstheimplementation,requiring employeestobetrainedandinformed aboutthenewsystemtechnologies.Koen Crooymans:“Itisreallyhard,oralmost impossible,topreparesuchan organizationalchangewhenhalfofthe peopleareworkingfromhomeon Monday,whiledifferentpeopleare workingfromhometheotherday.”A UserAcceptanceTestaimstoinvestigate whethertheusersarewillingtoadaptto thisnewimplementation.Tobe successful,itisrequiredofdifferent stakeholderstobeinthesameroomat thesametime.Duetopeoplegetting acquaintedtoworkingathome,thiswas almostimpossibletoaccomplish.In contrast,digitalizationprovides companieswiththeopportunityto quicklyconnectwithoneanother. “Peoplecandotheirdutiesfromhome perfectly.But,inchangemanagement youhavetobeabletolookeachotherin theeye.Areemployeessupportingthis change?Howdotheyfeelaboutitanddo theysupportit?”
Accomplishingthebigprojects
ThehealthcareprojectinwhichMariska deKortisinvolved,isexecutedonalarge scaleandoveralongtimespan.Advising modelstoensurepandemic preparednessthroughITinfrastructure isnotsomethingthatisdoneoveraweek. Thedifficultieslieinregulationsand legislationsconcerningwhocanmake specificdecisionsandwhoshould executethem.Forexample,many COVID-19specificissuesconcernthe
municipalhealthcareonanexecutive level.Thinkofvaccinating,whichisnow doneonalocalscale,butstartedmore centralizedforCovid-19.Thevaccinesare providedbyamuchlargernetworkand arepurchasedonanationallevel. Additionally,itshouldbepossibletokeep trackofwhoisvaccinated,infectedand thecontactstheyhad.MariskadeKort: “Asyoucanimagine,manydifferent stakeholdersshouldbeabletotapinto suchinformationwhiletheprivacyofthe citizensshouldbeguaranteed.” Moreover,whenadifferentpandemic occurs,differentstakeholdersshouldbe abletoaccessthesameITsystemand distillthenecessaryinformation,ata muchlargerscale.KoenCrooymans’

clientis,astoldearlier,implementingan SAPsystemindifferentsubcompanies whichwereacquiredoverthelastyearsin ordertoachieveeconomiesofscale.The costsareimmense,reachingvaluesover 20millionperbusinessunit.Justaswith thehealthcareprojectsofMariskade Kort,itisessentialtomapallthe stakeholders,togetherwiththeir interestsandconcerns,inorderto mitigatetherisks.
Clearly,bothprojectshavetheirown challenges.Howdoyougetstartedwith them?MariskadeKort:“Thereare severalstandardmethodsthatcanwork asablueprintforapproachingsuch projects.Butinreality,itisoften

Itisdesiredtoprovidethestakeholderswithconfidenceintheirtechnologicallyadvancedand highcapitalrequiringprojectssincemanychallengesandrisksarise.Itisregularlyexecuted beforethepointwhereexceptionalexpensesarise.Bothhardskills(methods,toolsand processes)aswellassoftskills(trainingemployees,people&changemanagementand leadership)areanalysedwithinthedesiredscope.Ausedtooliscalledthe‘Devil’sTriangle’ whichlooksintothecosts,qualityandtimespanoftheproject.

KoenCrooymansstudiedIndustrial EngineeringattheTUEindhovenabout adecadeagoandisverysatisfiedwiththe applicationsinhisdailyworkinglife. MariskadeKortcouldalsoapprovethe importanceofsomespecificskillsyouget duringthisprogram.Ithasbecome visibleduringthisarticlethatmanybig projectswithinKPMGaffectabusiness asawhole,andthereforetouchmany, differentbusinessprocesses.These
processesareoftenchangingduringthe projectandmustthereforebeunderstood thoroughly.Thefieldsofoperations,HR, andITprocessescanallbecome applicableduringavarietyofprojectsat KPMG.Inordertotacklebigprojectsas theonesmentionedinthisarticle,itis veryinterestingtoknowhowacompany goesfromexecutingitsoperationto makingitfinanciallyfeasible.
Concluding
Inthiseditionandarticle,SCOPE reflectedbackontheyear2022. Althoughitisimportanttoevaluate,it mightevenbemorecriticaltolookahead. TheEuropeanUnionmadevery ambitiousgoalsfortheyear2030.Goals thatcanbesplitintotwomajorpillars: sustainabilityanddigitalization.They formulatethisastheESG-criteria (Environmental,SocialandGovernance criteria)andtheDigitalAge,wherethe focusisondataprocessingwhile guaranteeingprivacy.Thiscreatesmany newchallengesforcompanies,resulting innewchancesforKMPG.Lastyear,and thenearfuture,seemquiteuncertainfor manysectors,butKPMGmanagedto
facilitatetheirclientswiththecertainty theydemandintheirchangingdesires. Theywelcomethenewsocietaldemands oftheEuropeanUnionandarewillingto aidtheirclientswiththesamequalityin thefutureinthesechallenging,but interestingtimes.

VUCA
VUCAisaphrasethatisoftenusedin theUScurrently.Besides,itisrisingin popularityintheNetherlandsaswell. VUCAstandsforvolatility,uncertainty, complexityandambiguity.Thistermis usedtodescribethehighlyuncertain andcomplexenvironmentinwhichwe, asindividualsandorganizations,find ourselvesintoday.Italsoemphasizes thevalueofadaptationatatimewhenit isgettinghardertodevelopdetailed plansforaperiodoffiveortenyears. Rob:“Itisawayofthinkingbywhere youcanassessyoursupplychainon VUCAfactorsandseewhereyouneed totakeextrameasurestomitigatethose factors.”Inotherwords,Jumbo’ssupply chainemploysVUCAfactorstoassess
oridentifyrisks.
Rob:“VUCAhaschangedthewaywe arethinkingaboutworkingtogether withoursuppliers.Wearelookingfor morefixedandlong-termsuppliersto ensuresecurityofsupply,butalsoto improvequalitytogetherandlowercost inthesupplychain.Itisamatteroflow cost,withthebestproduct.Inother words,VUCAinfluencesthestrategy modelintoamorework,grow,improve andfindthebesttogether.”
Missionandvision
InthepastJumbohadasocalled‘single channel’,thesupplierdeliverstothe customerviaansinglesalespoint.Since thelastdecadeJumbochangedtoaso
calledomnichannel.Theideaof omnichannelmanagementwas introducedfiveyearsagoinreactionto theexpansionoftheinternetandthe ensuingchangeinconsumerbehaviour. Omnichannelisanewstrategyto improvetheshoppingexperiencefor customersandaddressanyissuewith singlechannelapproachtoretailing.For Jumbothismeanseitherthecustomers shopphysicallyoronline,the experiencemustbeseamlessand consistentacrossallchannelswith specialattentioninpeople’smindsets.
Rob:“Duetothatthesupplychain deliversdirectlytothecustomers buyinggroceriesthroughtheinternet, weneedtothinkevenmoreaboutend customers.Thus,somethingsmustbe
considered,suchustheNetPromotion Score(NPS)whichishowthe customersexperiencetheservicethe companyisproviding.Allstartswiththe customer.Thewholecompanymustbe organizedaroundthecustomertogive themthebestexperience.”
Intheupcomingtime,Jumbointends todeployadditionalexpendituresto emphasizetheexpansionofthe omnichannelstrategyandthe implementationoffurtherquality improvementintheoffer.Inparallel, thebusinessisupgradingits organizationalstructurewithafocuson streamlinedbusinessprocedures, digitization,andimprovedICTanddata processingtechnologies.Moreover, JumbohasunveileditsnewLong-Term Plan,whichcomprisesatighteningof thecourse,basedonathoroughanalysis

“Weshouldbereadyforthefuture challenges.Thatmeanswelookatthe supplychaininVUCAtermswhereis thesupplychainstrongandvulnerable, andthenseveralstrategiesareapplied inordertomakeJumbostronger.”
Sevenstrategiesareappliedthroughout theJumbo’ssupplychain.Thefirst strategyconsistsofkeepingand improvingtheworkforces.Rob:“Thisis theasignificantone.Attractandkeep enthusiastic,energeticandmost valuableemployees.Havingtheright amountofpeopleandtheright competencescandeterminethefuture ofanycompany,thatiswhythisisavery importantstrategy.”Thesecondstrategy isaboutbeingmoresustainableand efficient.Rob:“Wearelookingto decreaseC02emissionsinthesupply
chainwithallkindsofmeasures: implementingsolarpanels,wind turbines,electrictruckstobealsomore costeffectiveinthefuture.Butalso,this affectstheplanningsystems,making surethatthetruckdrivesasfullas possibleandtrainourdriverstodotheir workinanefficientway.Becoming moresustainableatthesametimeof becomingmoreefficient.Jumbodoes muchmore,butinthesupplychain,we focusonthefuture,customersandfind waystobemoresustainable.”Taking controlofthewholesupplychainis anotherstrategythatJumboapplies throughoutthesupplychain.Thefourth strategylooksforamoresustainable andstableschemelandscape.So,allthe systemsthroughoutthecompanymust beinterconnected.Futureimprovement inoperationsandthusquality,to decreasecomplexityandhaveamore stableprocess.Anotherimportant strategyistheomnichannelapproach, whichwasdiscussedbefore. Operationalexcellencewiththecurrent processes.Inotherwords,havingthe rightstandardsofthedifferent processes.“Eleventhousandpeople workingatJumbo’ssupplychainwith multipledistributioncenters,sohaving anoperationalexcellencewillgive feedback,andimprovetheprocesses.”
Toachievethis,diverseprogramsare offeredtoJumboemployeesinorderto increaseorganizationalculture employeemorale,employee productivity,andemployee performance.Forexample,oneofthe programsisabouthealth,inwhich employeesareencouragedtostop smoking,havingtherightjobatthe rightage,eatinghealthy,anddosports withtheaimofimprovingtheemployee

RobJacobsalsohascompletedmultiple programs,ofwhichoneofthemwas: theSeniorLeadershipDevelopment Program(SLDP)atNyenrodeBusiness Universiteit,whichbroughthimnew ideasonauthenticleadership.Nextto externalprogramsalotofmanagement programswithdifferentkindoflevels areofferedbyJumbototheiremployees. “WhatIhavenoticedwhenyoustart workingisthatyouhavedifferentneeds thanwhenyouarefurtherinyour career,forexample,howtomanage.The mostimportantthingIhavelearned throughoutalltheseyearsis:beopen forfeedback,askproactivityfor feedbackandunderstandwhatyouwant toachieve.Understandhowyouactand behaveunderpressure,whatmakesyou enthusiastic,whatishardforyou,etc. So,onceyouhavesettledthat perceptionofyou,peoplewillnotbe afraidtogiveyoufeedback.Thatisthe mostimportantthingyoumustworkon asaleader.Furthermore,understand thatyoucannotbeanexpertin everything,youmusttrustyour colleagues,supportthemandchallenge them,makesuretheirambitionsare clearandthusstretchyourselfand others.Thus,myroleisinthecompany, support,stretch,trustanddiscipline.So thatwecreateanenergeticenvironment toworkin.”

InNovember2022the27theditionof theUnitedNationsclimatechange conferencetookplaceinEgypt.Many governmentalrepresentativesfromall overtheworldarguedthattheclimate changeproblemsarereallysevereand thatwereallyshoulddosomethingto tacklethismajorproblemverysoon. Thequestionisnothow,butwhois goingtodoit?
Socialentrepeneurs
Socialimpactisusuallytheoutputof veryhierarchicaltop-downdecisionmakingwithinlargeorganizations. Butapparently,thenewgenerationof entrepreneursischangingthisstatus quo.Entrepreneursbeingoneofthose
peoplemostaffectedbyacertainissue appeartobemorefocusedoncreating socialimpactbybuildingsolutions themselves,ratherthanfocusingon solvingproblemsforbeneficiaries. Youngpeopleexperiencingthe problemtheywanttosolve themselves,havethebestknowledge tofixtheproblem.Bygivingpeople theopportunitytosolvetheirown problemsbyprovidingrequired resources,problemscanbesolved morelocallyinsteadofusingold impactframeworks.Alsoitisof importancethatsocialentrepreneurs havetheabilityandspaceavailableto solveissuesthemselves.TheTU/ehas aclearvisionontheintegrationof
challengebasedlearninginour coursesby2030,whichisalreadya goodmethodforsolvingproblems locally.However,stilltheproblemis notownedbytheproblemsolverhimorherself.Thenextquestionis,how canwesupportandmotivatepeopleto designsolutionsfortheirown problemsmosteffectively?
Whentalkingaboutsocial entrepreneurshavingaclearvisionfor theircompanydeductedfromown experience,YvonChouinardisagood example.Asamountainclimber,he knewthevalueofthenaturehewas surroundedwithconstantly,andasa businessmanheknewthenegative
sideeffectsofproducinggoodsina non-environmentallyresponsibleway. Therefore,heintroducedtheterm ‘cleanclimbing’andhefoundedthe privatebenefitcompanynamed Patagoniain1973,whichoffers clothingforclimbersandisalsoawellknownbrandintheNetherlands.Itis seenasoneoftheforerunnersof societalresponsibleentrepreneurship. Thecompanyisknownforitsactivist activitiesandroleintheglobalclimate discussions.Patagoniapresentedits visionas“Patagoniaisinbusinessto saveourhomeplanet”andfrom2002 onwardsitspends1%ofitsbudgetto charitiesrelatedtoprotectionof natureandclimate.
The‘betekeniseconomie’ Someonewhostatesthatamore revolutionarychangeisrequiredis KeesKlomp.Heidealizesa fundamentaldifferentwayofthinking inhowbusinessmodelsshouldbe appliedinordertosolvemajor problemslikeclimatechange.Heis lectureratHogeschoolRotterdamand callsfortheadoptionofthe ‘Betekeniseconomie’;thesocietal trendinwhichthehumandesireto meaningfultradingbecomesmore dominant.Thisissocietal entrepreneurship,beingappliedina broadersense.
Overtheyears,economicgrowthhas becometheultimaterecipefora flourishingworld.However,theflip sideofthatworldviewisthatmajor trendsasclimatechange,lossof biodiversity,growinggapbetweenrich andpoor,increaseofpeoplehaving depressionsandsocietalpolarisation arefundamentallydisruptingsociety. FollowingKeesKlomp,thesetrends allleadtoecological,socialand individualcostswhichareevenso highthathespeaksofanexistential crisis.
Thesolutionforincorporatingthese costsinourcurrenteconomicsystem, isacompletelyneweconomic narrative;the‘Betekeniseconomie’. Here,ecologyisthestartingpointof thisnew(to-bedesigned)economic model.Howthiseconomicmodel shouldbedesignedrequiresa completelynewwayofthinkinganda
changeoftheroleofmoneyinour society.Therefore,itisinterestingto thinkabouttheroleofIndustrial Engineersinthisneweconomic model.Oncewehavetosolvea businesscaseinwhichwehaveto modelandquantifytheeffectonthe levelofbiodiversity,thesocietal polarisation,depressionofpeopleand onthegapbetweentherichandthe poor,ourknowledgeasIndustrial Engineershouldbeusedinadifferent way.Ourroleasmodellerand optimizationexpertwon’tchange much,butthevalueofmoneyandthe respectivevalueoftheearlier mentioned‘majortrends’shouldbe reconsideredinourmodels.

Anotherlayeraddingtothedifficultyof involvingsustainabilityinoperations managementarethechangingissues regardingsustainability.Currently, severalactionsaretakentoreducethe impactonthewarmingoftheearth,but manyotherissueswillneedattentionin thefuture.Wastemanagement,water conservation,resourcedepletion,social sustainability,andenergyefficiencyare justacoupleofexampleswhere concernsonsustainabilityarerealand actionsneedtobeundertakentocope withtheseissues.Althoughtheseare bigissues,everysteptakenintheright directioncounts.‘Sustainabilityisa trajectory.Everylittleproject,everylittle actioncounts’.

thatcanmakeanimpact.Everybody knowsthatswitchingfuelsorsourcesof energyarestepsthatneedtobe undertaken,butthereneedstobeaplan todothis.Tanmentionsquestionsthat needtobeaskedbeforeeventhinking abouttheimplementation;

exampleofhowtheprinciples mentionedbeforehavebeenusedina real-worldcaseisastudyby,among others,TanatPhilips.Tan:‘Through mycontactsinacademiaIcameinto contactwithaprojectonsustainability atPhilips.Philipswasworkingheavily toassessthesustainabilitylevelsofits suppliers’.Supplierswouldbeassessed ontheirsustainability,andviolationsor improvementpointswouldcomeup, whichcouldthenbeimprovedbythe supplier.However,asonemight imagine,notallofthiswastakeninby thesupplierandre-auditswouldpoint outthatthesameissuesarestill present.‘Philipswasfedup,and wantedtofindanefficientsystemon howtoassessthelevelsofalltheir 15000suppliers’.
Sincenotallsupplierscouldbevisited, intensivedatacollectionandon-site visitsforthemostinterestingand importantsupplierswasperformedin ordertoproduceamachine-learning model.‘Welookedatthecharacteristics thatdefinesustainabilityissuesat suppliers,suchasthelocation,thesize ofthecompany,theownership,and otherfactors,inordertocomeupwith amodelthattellsyouwhatsimilar supplierscouldfaceassustainability issues’.Basedonthecharacteristics, certainsolutionswouldbeprovided, whichhasovertimeledtoa50% improvementattheparticipating suppliers.‘Themodeliscontinuously supportedwithreal-lifedata,making themodelsmarter,andPhilipshas beenimplementingit,eventually becominganindustryleader.’This projectatPhilipsshowsgreatlyhowan industrial-engineeringmindsetcanbe usedforvariouspurposes,suchas sustainabilityinthegivencase.
Awareness
Sustainabilityneedsawarenessforitto befullyintegratedinthefieldofwork. Whenaskedwhetherthelevelof awarenessissufficient,Tanrepliedthe following;‘Absolutelynot.Oneofthe biggestissuesistheawarenessasno awarenessmeansnoaction.However,I havebeenobservingashift,especially intheyoungergeneration’. Sustainabilityshiftedfromaside-goal thatwasnicetobeachievedtoagoalfor most,andapriorityforsome.Notonly
aresuppliersgettingamoresustainable mindset,soareconsumers.’10to15 yearsago,therewasnowillingnessto payforsustainability,whilepeopleare nowreadytopaymore,whichmeans thereismoreroomforthebusiness sideofsustainabilitytooperatefroma costpointofview.Thesenseofurgency howeverisnotthereyet’.Tanmentions theconcernsaroundtheParis agreement,wherethegoaltokeepthe increaseoftemperatureonearthto1.5 degreesisnotlikelytobemet.
Awarenessshouldthereforebeboosted, whichstartsineducation.Together withcolleagues,Tanopenedthecourse ‘SustainableSupplyChains’,which incorporatestheviewsmentionedin thisarticletosupplychains.‘Itshould howevernotbejustonecourse,butpart ofeverysinglecourse.Youdonothave tobeanexpertinsustainabilityto incorporateusecaseswithparticular objectives.’Thistransitionstartsatthe professor,whereTansuggestsmore efforttobespentonprovidingmore workshopsandseminarstoactively pushprojectsandcoursestoinclude sustainability.
Notonlyarestudentsmoreawareof sustainabilityconcerns,theirmodels alsobecomemorerepresentativeof reality.‘Customersareaskingforthe incorporationofresourcescarcity, stakeholderpressure,customerand consumerpressure,andthecostsand risksassociatedtothat.Models involvingallthesefactorswillshow betterreplicationsofrealityandthus improveresultsandcustomer satisfaction’.Asidefromconsumers,
regulatoryorgansareputtingpressure
ontheinvolvementofsustainability factorsinmodels,aswellasthe competitivenessofothercompaniesto belabeled‘sustainable’.‘Peoplemight saywearenotoptimizinganymore,but weareoptimizing,maybeevenmore thanwithoutinvolvingthesefactors’.

Asidefromthebenefitsprovidedbya climate-awareviewonbusiness,thereis personaladvantageinthisfieldofwork too.‘Sustainableoperationsareonthe riseinthejobmarket.Bigdataanalysis combinedwithsustainability,likethe projectatPhilips,isgoldenandifyou candodataandsustainabilitywitha master’sdegreeinindustrial engineering,youwillnothavea problemfindingajob’.Withmoreand moreopportunitiesintechnologyfor theswitchtomoresustainableformsof energy,lighting,transport,service,and generaluseofcommodities,this sustainableviewonprojectsand operationswillbecrucialandoffergreat chancesforjobapplications.

Thatafternoon,westartedwitha baseballgameoftheGiants.Thenext day,wevisitedAlcatrazIsland,a prisonwiththemostdangerous prisonerswhereitwas(almost) impossibletoescapefrom.Finally,we wentcyclingontheGoldenGate Bridge,whichwasveryhigh,butthe viewwasdefinitelyworthit! Laterthatevening,wegottoknowthe organizers,ourhostandtheother participants.Itshouldnotbea surprisethatthefirstnightendedina bar.Weplayedpool,sangkaraokeand endedupeatingsomelate-night snacksaltogether:thefirst impressionsweremade.
Thenextmorning,ourfirstlecture wasscheduled.Whiledrinking severalcoffees,welearnedaboutthe Finnishpoliticalsystemand politicians.However,theinteractive sessionattheendwasevenmore interesting.Wegottheassignmentto proposeaplantobecomethenext Finnishprimeminister.People showedawholedifferentsideof themselvescomparedtolastnight. DuringtheICAT,whichisatraining aboutdifferentculturesandthe differencesbetweenthem,Ilearned somuchaboutallmyfellow participantsandtheirpersonal situations.Fromthedifferences betweenallGermanparticipantsto thesimilaritiesbetweenItalian, TurkishandSwedishparticipants,it allsurprisedme.
ThentheshowpieceofeveryESTIEM event:theInternationalNight.Every participantbroughtandpresented somesnacksanddrinksfromtheir countryoforigin.Often,thereiseven
aspecialwayorproceduretodrinkthe drinksoreatthesnacks.After enjoyingthecultureofthe participants,itwastimetodo somethingtypicalFinnish;Relaxing inthesaunaandafterwards swimminginthelake.Something Finnishstudentsdofrequently. Imaginebeinginthesaunawitha bunchofstudentsandsuddenly runningoutsideintoanalmostfrozen lake,thatbeanamazingexperience. Andindeed,itwas.
Withintheweek,Igottoknow amazingpeopleinsomanyways.We formedanamazinggrouptilltheend oftheeventandafterwards.We travelledbacktoHelsinkiairport together,hungoutthere,dranksome lastFinnishbeersandallheadedback toourownhomes.IstronglybelieveI havemetpeopletherewhoIwillsee muchmoreofteninthefutureandat theendoftheeventnoonesaid goodbye,everyonesaid:‘tillwemeet again’.

TEXT JeroenAdams DESIGN MarijnKoningsThebeginningofNovemberofthis yearmarkedthe65thCouncil MeetingofESTIEMwhichtookplace inIstanbul.Thiseditionwasboundto beaspecialonesincethereis someonefromEindhoveninthe ESTIEMboardagain,Max Sturkenboomandfortheveryfirst timeaIndustriaboardmember joined,namelyJensAdriaanse.In total9peoplefromLocalGroup Eindhovenhadthechancetobepart ofthisyear’sCouncilMeeting.
Everyonewasreallyexcitedtodiscover Istanbul,thecityofmosques,palaces, parksandmansionswithitshuge historicalandculturaltextureonthe continentsofEuropeandAsia.The richhistoryofIstanbulhasseen120 kaisersandemperorsthroughout history.Ithashostedthethreegreat civilizationsoftheRoman,Byzantian andOttomanempireandwillbethe centerpieceofthisCouncilMeeting. TheCouncilMeetingisthestatutory meetingofESTIEMandtakesplace twiceayear.Itiscomposedoftwo parts:TheGeneralAssembly,where everyoneisupdatedonwhatisgoing oninESTIEManddecisionsaremade throughvotingandTheWorking Groups,TrainingSessionsand CompanyWorkshops,wheresmaller
groupseitherworktodevelop ESTIEM,orimprovetheirsoftskills. Intotaltherewereabout250 participantsfromover30different countriesalongwithover150 organizers.
TogetherwithJensAdriaanseand JorritvanIersel,ItravelledtoIstanbul. BothhadnotparticipatedinaCouncil Meetingandthereforehadverylittle ideawhatexperienceswouldwaitfor them.Jens,JorritandI,quickly referredtoasthe3J’s,landedonthe AsiansideofIstanbuladaybeforethe eventstarted.Sinceourapartmentfor thenightwasontheothersideofthe river,wehadtotakeataxioverthe BosphorustotheEuropeansideofthe city.Thiswaswithoutadoubtoneof thesketchiestbutfuncarrides everyonehashadbutluckilyweall survived.Themomentwegotoutof thetaxiwegotconfrontedbyoneof thebusiestandhecticcitiesinthe world.Aftermakingaquickstopat ourapartmentweheadedintoTaksim Square,amajortouristandleisure districtandseenasthemoderncenter ofthecity.Whentryingtofindaplace tohavedinnerwewereconstantly approachedbypeoplewhowantedus toentertheirrestaurantandwhoall turnedouttohavefriendsorfamily
fromtheNetherlandswhenhearing wewereDutch.orbypeoplewhowere sellingitemsvaryingfrompacksof tissuestoafunnelyoucould convenientlyalsouseasahat. Whenwefinallyfoundasuitable restaurant,wesoondiscoveredwe weretheonlyonesintheentire buildingwithoutaGalatasarayshirt on.Fortunately,theyjustwonthe derbyagainstBesiktas,soeveryone wasinagoodmood.Afterwardswe wentforadrinkatacaféwherewe triedthetypicalTurkishdrinkRaki.
UnfortunatelyforJens,thedrinkhas astronganisetasteandsinceJenshas hadsomebadexperienceswith sambucahehadahardtimefinishing hisdrink.Inthemeantimetherewere constantlypeoplecomingbywho weresellingitemsvaryingfrompacks oftissuestoafunnelyoucouldvery convenientlyalsouseasahatwhicha guykindlydemonstrated.Afterafew drinksandwiththefactthattheentire eventwasstillaheadofusinour mindswewentbacktoourapartment toatleasthaveonegoodnightofsleep whichwasharderthanexpectedsince Turkishpeopleapparentlythink playingloudmusicandscreaming outsidearegreatactivitiestodoat5 AMinthemorning.
Thefollowingmorningwewent toasmallbarinourstreetand afterfindingoutnoonecould speakEnglishwepointedtothe disheswewantedonlytofind outweorderedeverythingfrom themenu.Afterourextensive breakfastweheadedtothefive starhotelthathostedallthe participantsoftheevent.The hotel,situatedinthesouthwest ofIstanbul,wealreadymetquite someESTIEMersandchoseto investigatetheneighborhood afterwedroppedourluggage. ThisareaofIstanbulwasnotthe mosttouristicpartso consequentlythehighlightsof theafternoonwerealocal graveyardandamuseumwhere almosteverythingwasin Turkish.Whenwegotbackto thehotelwegotsomedinner andmetthepeopleofourvery ownfamily. Sincetherearesomanypeople ataCMitishardtomeet everyonesoyouareputin families-smallgroupsof ESTIEMersfromdifferentLGs anddifferentexperiencelevel, thatyouwillbeabletomeet duringthesomeactivitiesand familygatherings.Duringthe nightaclubwasrentedoutfor allparticipantsandthissparked thebeginningofaweekfullof reallyfunculturalactivities,alot ofbigpartiesandsome importantdiscussionsand votingsthatwouldshapethe futureoftheESTIEMnetwork.
Everymorning,multiplebusses wouldtakeallparticipantstothe placeofthegeneralassemblyat around8inthemorningfrom thehoteltothecampusofYildiz University.Thegeneral assemblywasinahuge conferenceroomthatcould easilyhostthecouplehundred participants.ForIstanbul standardstheuniversitywas reallyclosealthoughthetotal transportationtimestilltook about45minutes.Inorderto makethegeneralassemblyas fluentaspossibleachairperson
iselected.Heorsheisresponsibleto leadthegeneralassemblyandensure thattheagendaisfollowedwhile stickingtothetime.Threesecretaries areelectedaswellwhoareresponsible fortakingtheminutesandlastbutnot leastavotingcommitteeiselected whichwereactuallymeanda Portuguesegirl.Togetherwehadto explainthevotingproceduresand presentthevotingresults.Duringthe dayswemostlydiscussedandvoted uponthenewbudget,motionsraised bymembersandchosenewleaders. Boardmembersanddepartment leaderspresentedwhattheyhadbeen thedoingthelastyearandmembers hadthechancetoaskquestionsto them.Asyoucanimagine,itishardto keepfullattentionduringadayfullof presentationsandupdatessothere wereplentyofenergizersand punishmentsforpeoplewhofell asleep.Thesepunishmentsconsisted mainlyofdoingsillydancesonstage sothiswasabigincentivetoeveryone tostayawake.
Lunchanddinnerwasalsoprovided oncampusinhugecanteens. Everyonehadtostandinlinewith theirironplatetogettheirfoodwhich alwaysconsistedofingredientsthat wecouldneverreallyidentify.After thegeneralassemblytherewastime forworkingclassesandgroupsand evenabigcompanyfair.Afterwards wewouldallbetransportedbackto thehotelwherewehadaroundhalfan houroffreetimewherewecould prepareourselvesforthenightactivity
ofthatday.Thiswasalwaysa hugethemedpartysomewherein acluborbarinIstanbul.These includedaHalloweenparty,neon lightsparty,agalaandofcourse aninternationalnight.During thispeoplebringtypicaldrinks andsnacksfromtheirhome country.Everycountrythengets theirowntablewhereyoucan displaywhatyoubrought. Everyonethenhasthechanceto gobythetablesandtrywhatever drinksandsnackspeoplehave brought.Sincetherewerearound 300participantsandover30 nationalities,onecanimagine howthesenightsendup.

However,asfinancialmanager,next tomyjobaccounting,Iamfinallyable totraveltoanunknownculture.I,in thebeginning,didnotknowaboutIRP asafterbeingpartoftheparentday committeeduringcovidbecameless activeatIndustria.Afterlongmonths sittingathomeIstartedsome committeesattheta,butwas sometimesstillwonderingiftherewas somethingtodoatIndustriaand luckilyIwasaskedtodothisproject thisyear.Ithinkitisoneofthemost interestingandrewardingcommittees todoasyoudevelopyourselfbygetting incontactwithcompaniesinthe Netherlands,butalsobyexperiencing another(work)culture.Likeall previousparticipantsofIRPhavetold me,Iwouldliketotellyou:ifyoucan, joinIRP,youwon’tregretit.

ThethemeofthisSCOPE,‘2022,theyear ofchange’isaveryrelevantone;whata yearithasbeen.Theyearstartedoffin themiddleoftheCoronapandemic. Christmaswasonceagaincelebrated differentlythanwewouldhavelikeditto be,andthestartoftheyearwasstillfull ofCovid-19restrictions.Theeducation wasoftenonlineagain,andeventscould nottakeplace.Whenfinally,those restrictionsweredisappearingagain,and wewereallhopingthatthingscouldgo backtothewayitwas,attheendof FebruaryRussiadeclaredwaronUkraine. Itgoeswithoutsayingthatitwas,andstill is,ahugeshockforeveryonetoseewhat isgoingonthere.Andstillatthismoment, thewarisnotover.
Thewaralsohadmanyother consequences,suchastheinflation. AccordingtohetCentraalBureauvoor deStatistiek,theinflationwasmost
recently11.2%(inNovember),whichis bizarre.Theenergypricesareinsanely high,andmanypeopleworryabout gettingthroughthiswinter. Onamorepositivenote,thisyearalso hashadgreatchanges.Finally,afterafew months,thepandemicwasnotpartof ourdailylivesanymore,andwecould enjoyspendingtimewithourfamilyand friends.WithinIndustria,I–and hopefullymanyotherswithme–have madeamazingmemorieslastyear.For example,wewentonaskiingtrip,we couldenjoyTheVillainitsfullcapacity againandtheGalacouldfinallytake place.Butmostimportantofall,we weretogetheragain.Ilookforwardto 2023,werehopefullymanynew memorieswillbemade!

Theyear2022wasabigoneforme. Withchangesinmypersonal,academic, andprofessionallife,Ihaveseenitall. Oneofthebiggestchangeswas finishingmyBachelor'sandstartinga boardyearatIndustria!InMay2022,I receivedthenewsthatIwouldbethe nextchairmanofourlovelystudy association.Iwasecstatictohearthis, especiallysinceIdidnothaveaclear backupplan.IfIwasnotselectedforthe board,IwouldapplyfortheOML Master,withoutlookingintothisor otherpossibilities.THATwouldhave beenaninterestingchangefortheyear. Nowthat2022isalmostover,itistime toreflectonthechangesandhowyou handledthem.Theseinsightscanthen beusedagainfor2023.Forexample,my lifebecameincreasinglybusywhenI

AttheendofJanuary,thelightslowly startedtobecomevisibleattheendofthe tunnel.Stratumwasopenedtill22:00. TheTU/eopeneditsphysicaldoorsagain. Moreover,thedigitalwarbetween theUnitedStatesandChinais rising,whereEuropewantstostepin aswell.Theseworldpowersallsign chipactstoensuretheirpartofthe marketshare.Itseemsthatchange willcontinueinthecomingyearin manyoftheaboveareas.

Aftergraduation,IjoinedEYasasupply chain&operationsadvisor,whereI helpedmultinationalsinre-defining theirsupplychainoperatingmodel. Thiswasatimewithlotsoffun,asteep learningcurveandlotsoftravel.Butin theendIwantedtounderstandthe supplychainfrominsideout,that’swhy IjoinedFrieslandCampina,acompany withauniqueandcomplexsupply chain.WithinFrieslandCampinaIam currentlyresponsibleforthesupply chain&networkstrategyofbusiness groupIngredients,afterhavinghad2 planningfunctionswithintheS&OP department.
