Dowstartedoffasasmallchemical companyfoundedin1897byHerbert HenryDow.Thebusinesshassincethen growntobethethird-largestmaterialsciencedcompanyintheworld,thriving inmaterialsciences.Dowisabusinessto-businesscompany,meaningthat mostoftheproductsproducedendupin theproductsproducedbyother companies.Dowproducesforvarious differentmarkets,suchasfood packaging,materialsforpaintand coatings,carbatteries,cleaning products,withatotalofover10.000 differentproducts.Themanufacturer wantstomaketheworldabetterplace withtheproductsitcreates,notonly throughinnovation,butalsothrougha sustainablemindset.

Dowasasustainablecompany Dowoperatesitscompanythrough4 ‘pillars’;Innovativeness,customer centricity,inclusivityandsustainability.

JensWitloxmentionstheimportanceof thesepillars.‘Firstofall,wehave varioussegmentswithourcustomers, andwealwayswanttogetthehighest customerexperiencepossible.Itisone ofourmainKPIs.’Thismindsetsetsthe toneforproductionandfillrates,andin thesechallengingenvironmentsthe innovativenessofDowcomestothe surface.‘Weareabusinessthatworksin challengingenvironment,andasa cyclicalcompany,adjustmentsto productionratesandotherfactorshave tobemade.ThecyclicityofDowisone wayinwhichtheyshowtheirfocuson sustainability,aswellasthroughtheuse ofthe4R’s.Michael:‘Wemakesurethat ourproductsarenotsingleuseproducts usingthe4R’s;Reduce,Reuse,Recycle andRecover’.Reduceisallabout reducingtheamountofmaterialusedin asingleproducts,suchasreducingthe numberoflayersabagofcrisps requiredfrom12toultimately1.

Reusingiswhatthewordsays;reusethe stuffthatweuseinotherproducts. Recyclinghastwocomponents; mechanicalrecyclingaswellas advancedrecycling.Accordingto Michael,‘thelatteraddsathirdstream ofmaterialtotheproductionlinewhich isrecycledwastebeingputbackintothe frontofthechain’.Ifthereisreally nothingelsethatcanbedone,atleast makesurewegetsomethingoutofit, whichcouldbeheat.

Dowisalsofocusinggreatlyonreducing theamountofCO2theyemit.One exampleMichaelmentionsislightweighting.‘Light-weightingmeansthat theamountoffuelrequiredfor transportisreduced.Takeabottleof CocaColainglass,andoneinplastic, samevolume.Sincetheglassoneis heavier,thetruckrequiredfortransport, requiringmorefuelandthusmore emissionofCO2intotheair.’Notonly

theirproducts,butalsothemeansof transportarelight-weighted.‘Ifmetal partsinanyvehiclecanbereplacedby alternatives’,mentionsMichael,‘the lighter-weightvehicleconsumesless fueltooandisthereforegreener’.Other impressiveprojectsaroundminimizing emissionsaretheplanstobuildthefirst net-neutral-CO2plantinCanada,aswell astheplanstoeliminatealltheCO2 emissionsattheirsecond-largest productionplantinTerneuzen.Michael: ‘thiswillneverhappenovernight,there isalotofresearchtobedone,butwefeel itisachievableto,by2050,reducethe emissionstoamaximumof5%,while theultimategoalis0%.

WhyisDowsopassionateabout sustainability?Michaelmentionsthe importanceofittothebusiness,as companieswilldieifsustainabilityis notanissue,butalsomentionsthe awarenessofitwithintheentire company.Michael:‘Especiallywithour newCEO,thereisatruepassiontowork onsustainability.Intheend,wenever wanttoleavetheworldasaworseplace forourskidsthanitistoday,anditis thereforereallydriventop-downfor everyonetohavesustainabilityastheir maindriver’.

DowasanIndustrialEngineer

IndustrialEngineersarerequired everywhere,butwhatwillyoudowhen youstartatDow?Firstofall,wehaveour functionininvolvingsustainability. ‘Withalltheknowledgeyourfacultyhas, wecanreallyapplysustainabilityina beneficialway.Takingitintoaccount efficientlywillbeverygoodforbusiness, andthatiswhereweneeddeterministic modelstocomeintoplay’,Jens mentions.Dowinvestsalotinto students,havingprojectsasagood

example.Jenshasbeenworkingona projectwithstudentsandcolleagues involvingwastecollection.‘Wearebusy doingfulllife-cycleassessmentsof projectsandoperations,toreallyseeour productsoverthefulltimeline.Thatis whereIndustrialEngineerscomein, whoareall-roundplayers,cantakea stepback,lookatthefullprojectsand takethebiggerpictureintoaccount’. OperationsatDowareinnovative, completeandcomplex,andthusrequire thoroughoperationsanalyses.‘Weneed thosebrightmindstocomeupwithnew solutions’saysJens.Sincetheyareso complex,alargeteamofbrightmindsis required,withdifferentcompetences. Therefore,ateamatDOWisalwaysa combinationofdifferentpeople,allwith adifferentbackground,suchasa mathematician,combinedwithadata scientistandanindustrialengineer.

DespitethefactthatDowisamaterial sciencedcompany,whichisnotexactly

inthefieldofIndustrialEngineering, everycompanyhasfunctionsthat industrialengineerscanfulfil.As Sophiementions:‘Youarenotalone.We workinteamswithcomplementary skills,andeveryoneiswillingtohelp you’.AnexampleofthisisSophie’sfirst projectinplastics.‘Someonefromthe teamwasinameetingwithmeforan hourandahalfandlow-levelexplained alltheprocesses.Managersandleaders weretheretohelpmeandconnectme withpeople’.Also,Dowdoesalotinthe fieldofresearchanddevelopment.Jens: ‘Annually,wespend2%ofourrevenue onresearchanddevelopment,whichis doubletheindustrystandard’.

Dowisaverylargecompany,butthat doesnotmeanthattheatmosphere throughoutaregulardayfeelslikethis. Michael:‘Themaindriverformeisthe people.InEnglishyoudonothearit,but aroundtheofficeyouwouldsay‘jij’or

Thedigitaltransformationworkthat Atosdoesallhasonecommongoal: improvingcurrentbusiness operations.However,themore

precisegoalcanvaryfromcompany tocompany.Thiscanincludecost savings,qualityimprovementor shiftingtowardsservitization.Asa consultingcompany,Atosfocuseson problemanalysisandoffers improvementpossibilitieswhichare implementedthenmaintainedand optimized.Theselastpartsarenot donebytheconsulting compartment,butbyotherentities withinAtos.ThisallowsAtostooffer end-to-endservicesandguideits clientsthroughouttheentiredigital transformationjourney.

Atosprovidesconsultingservicesto

Regardingthesecondpillar,Kuitems statesthat“sustainabilityistwofold inourorganization.First,how sustainableisourowncompany?We havemanytraditionaldatacenters thatconsumeenergy,whichweare currentlytryingtoreduce.”

Bywayofexample,hepointsoutthat allcarsleasedbyAtosare100% electric,showingthatAtosfocuses onimprovingitsownsustainability, aswellasforitsclients.

“Forourcustomers,wecalculate theirexistingcarbonfootprintand lookforopportunitiestoreduceit,” saysKuitems.

Dorhoutadds,“Withinourindustry, wehaveoneofthehighestranksin theDowJonesSustainabilityIndex. InEurope,Atoswasrankednumber oneoutofallcompaniesinour industryin2021.”

Inthethirdpillar,collaborations betweenscientificinstitutionsand universitiesplayalargerole.The AtosScientificCommunityfocuses onhowtheindustrywillchangein comingdecadeandbeyond.

”Wehaveagoodrelationshipwith theUniversityofTechnology Eindhoven,”saysKuitems.“Wehave oneprofessorthatworksonedaya weekinourteam,butwealsogive lecturestoMaster’sstudents,sothis collaborationgoesinboth directions,”headds.

FromstudenttoAtosconsultant

Asmanyindustrialengineering studentsexperience,theireducation

isbroad.Dorhouthadthesame experience,afterfinishinghis Master’sinInnovationManagement inEindhoven.

“Honestly,Iwasstrugglingbecause Ihaveknowledgeinmanysubjects, makingitdifficulttochoosea directionorpositionmyselfwithin anyindustry,”saidDorhout.“Idid notwanttolosemybroad perspective,whichiswhyIshifted myfocustowardsconsultancy.In anyconsultingfunction,yougetthe opportunitytoexperiencemultiple companieswithinashortperiod, whichgivesyourlearningcurvea boost.”

HowdidDorhoutfinallyendupat Atos?Byspeakingtodifferent companiesandfindingthebest connectionathiscurrentemployer. InDorhout’sexperience,Atosisa “nononsense”company,where directcontactwithyourmanageris thenormandanopenatmosphereis created.

Kuitemsagreesonthisopen atmosphere.“WhatmakesAtos different?”heasks.“Inourculture, wedon’tworkaccordingto predeterminedsteps,andwearenot tiedupinhierarchy.Thereare endlesspossibilitieswithinAtos,but theywillonlypresentthemselvesif youtaketheinitiative.”

Theseendlesspossibilitiesallow employeestostartadditional projectsbasedontheirown interests,oropportunitiesthey discoveredoutsideoftheir assignmentsforcustomers.“Thisis howwestandoutfromthecrowd,” saysKuitems.

Adayinthelifeofaconsultant

AccordingtoDorhout,thereisno suchthingasa“typical”dayfora consultant.“However,Icangiveyou ageneralideaofwhatadayatAtos lookslike,”hesays.

“Myfirstcustomerassignmentwas toimprovethecompany’ssecurity, whichIluckilydidnothavetosolve onmyown,becauseeverynew consultantatAtosispairedwitha seniorconsultantthathasmore experience.”

“Mydaystartedwithpreparing sessionsfortherestofthedaywith myseniorconsultant,andalso endedtogetherwiththesenior consultant,todiscusshowtheday went,”Dorhoutexplained.“Thisis oneofthemainreasonsIreally enjoyworkingatAtos,thatyouget theopportunitytobementoredby moreexperiencedcolleagues.”

Asmentionedbefore,inadditionto clientassignments,thereisspacefor individualprojects.ForDorhout,it meantthatduringthattime,hewas busycreatinganinternalstart-up focusedonsmartagriculture.“My customerassignmenthadaegoal, butIhadthefreedomtostartmy ownprojectinternally,makingmy daysmoredynamic—evenmore dynamicthananaverage consultant,”herecalled.

Kuitemsadds:“Ingeneral,a consultantmustbeajack-of-alltrades.It’sapositivetraittohaveas aperson,butyouwillalwaysrun shortoftime.”

theoreticalproblemandextendedita little,withisgreatifyouonlyhave academicambitions,buttherearebig advantagesofhavingactual implementationimpact’mentionsTan. Anambitiontohelpthesocietyforthe better,andthegrowingimportanceand interestforsustainabilitycausedTanto switchhisfocusonsustainabilityinhis fieldofinterest.

Togettherequiredresults,industrial engineersmusthavetheproper aptitudeandexpertise.AnIEshouldbe abletoeffectivelycoordinateefforts withotherdepartmentsandworkas partofateam.Basstatesthat:‘AnIE shouldhavestronganalyticaland conceptualskillsandhavetheabilityto performcomplexdataanalysisand drawconclusionsfromtheresultsin ordertodriveprocessimprovements’. BasGielen,DirectorContinuousImprovementandSupplyChainSystemsstudied IndustrialEngineeringandsubsequentlytheMasterofIndustrialEngineeringand ManagementSciencefrom2001until2007attheTU/e.Afterhiseducation,twopotential jobopportunitieswerethere:ASMLandFootLocker.Asatravellover,FootLockerwas chosen,whichprovidedhimwithabroadermind,travellingacrosstheAtlanticOceanand achievingbackgroundsfromavarietyofareas.Basdescribesthathisstudywasinthefield of‘quality/reliabilityengineering’,inordertoensurethatabusiness'sequipmentlivesup tostandardsofqualityandreliabilitytopreventanyfailures,profitloss,orworkstoppages. Tinydecisionswemakeorthingswedo canresultinbigthings,whichmewaynot seebeforehand,butwhichmakeperfect senseinhindsight.Myrandomsemester inBerlinisaperfectexampleofthis. IwenttoanESTIEMeventinaremote cabinclosetoBudapestinFebruary2022.I wenttherealoneandcamebackwithnew peopletovisitinEurope.Theeventwas aboutpersonaldevelopmentandsetting goalsforthefuture.Weweren’tallowedto haveourphonesordrinkalcohol,sowe hadtotalktoeachotherforreal.Aswe werediscussingourdreams,Itoldsome peoplethatIwouldliketoliveabroadfora while.AfterlivinginEindhovenforaslong asIcanremember,Ifeltthedesiretogo somewherenew.Maybeaftermy bachelor’sinagapyear,andotherwisein mymaster'sdegree.Iwasn’tthinking aboutitanytimesoon,becauseIthoughtit wouldbeimpossible.

StudioinBerlin

Thenafewdaysaftertheevent,Igota messagefromagirlImetattheevent.She wasgoingabroadandshewaslookingfor someonetotakeoverherrelativelycheap studioinBerlinforasemester.Shethought ofmebecauseItoldherduringtheevent thatIwantedtogoabroad.Itsounded perfectandIwasimmediatelyinterested, butIdidn’tknowhowtoarrangeitwithmy studies.Aftersomethinking,Idecidedthat IcouldjustgoandstudyfromBerlin.I chosecoursesthatmostlyconsistedofselfstudyandIonlyhadtocometoEindhoven totakeexamsonceinNovember.After convincingmyparentsofthisamazing, well-thought-outplan,Isaidyestothe studio.

FirstFriend

Amonthbeforemyplanneddepartureto Berlin,Iwenttoafestival.Iwasonthetrain backwhenmyphonediedandIdidn’t knowwheretogo.Iaskedagirlonthetrain howtogetbacktoEindhoven,andshe happenedtogothereaswell.Wesat togetherandstartedtalking.Itoldher aboutmyrandomsemesterinBerlinand tomysurprise,oneofherbestfriendsjust

TheninSeptember,itwastimetogoto Berlin.Movingtoacityofalmost4million peopleofwhichIknewonlyone,withouta jobandauniversityisthemostrandom thingIhaveeverdone.Itsoundslikea terribleplan,whichisexactlywhyit interestedme.Ifoundajobonshortnotice atastart-upwhereIgottoknowmany people.Withyoungandinternational coworkers,anddrinksandpartiesatthe companyeverynowandthen,itwasavery nicecompanytoworkfor.

Tomeetotherstudents,IwenttoErasmus drinks(nooneseemedtocarethatIwas indeednotanErasmusstudent).There,I metpeoplewholateronalsointroduced metootherpeople.Withthesmallfriend groupImade,Ididmanydifferentthings. Wewalkedthroughthecityandwentto parkswhentheweatherwasstillgood. Later,wemostlywenttobarsand restaurants,andofcoursetomanyofthe technoclubsandpartiesBerlinhastooffer!

Doyouknowwhat'sbetterthanhanging outwithyourfellowIndustriafriendsin Eindhoven?Hangingoutwiththemin Bucharest!AspartofESTIEMNetwork, IndustriaisconsideredasLocalGroup (LG)Eindhovenandwecanarrange severaldayslongexchangestoanother city,meettheIndustrialEngineersofthat city,learntheirculture,historyandof coursetheirfamousdrinks.Muchlike howwewenttoKrakowduringthe Christmasbreak(AskourdearIndustria Boardforthedetailsastheysureenjoyed it),thistimewedecidedtoarrangean exchangewiththestudentsfrom PolitehnicaUniversityofBucharestand hadthechancetovisitthecountryof Romania.Sinceunfortunatelythe capacityofthetripislimited,wepicked the15studentsthatwerethequickestto reachouttousandwealsotriedtomake thegroupasdiverseaspossible.From several"sjaars"first-yearstomaster students,from"tappers"ourVilla'sown bartenderstonotactivefellowmembers, ourgroupwasasuniqueaswecouldget. Rightafterwelanded,peoplefromour exchangewerealreadywaitingforusand tookustoourplaceofstay.Aftersettling inweallwalkedtogetheralongthe Dâmbovițariverandfoundacozybar wherewecanbothgettoknowourgroup moreandalsoourtourguidesfrom Bucharest!Theygaveusaquickoverview ofthescheduleoncemore(wehad receiveditalsobeforehand).Togiveyou myfellowreadersabitoverview,themain eventsweretheThermeBucharest,City Tour,LanguageSession,International NightandofcorusenightlifewhichIwill explainallbelow.

Ofcourse,weendedourdayattheuni withthefamousInternationalNight! TaiwanhasbeenoftenbeenthetopicofdiscussionintheDutchmediaoverthe pastyear.Manywerewonderingifthesituationwassafeenoughtogothereas pressurefromthePeople’sRepublicofChinaseemedtobeincreasing.Moreover, theboardershadalreadybeenclosedforovertwoyearsduetocovidwhenI neededtodecideonthelocationformyexchange.Nevertheless,theideaofliving therehadbeeninmyheadforseveralyearsalready,soIwasdeterminedand decidedtoapplyanywaytogothereformyexchange.Icanalreadytellyouthatit wasthebestdecisionever.

Steppingoutsidemycomfortzone& intoTaiwan

AlthoughIsignedupinMarchtogothe NationalTaiwanUniversity(NTU)in Taiwan’scapitalcityTaipei,Ionlyknew mid-Augustthatitwasactuallypossible. Theuncertaintyduringthemonthsin betweendefinitelywasn’tfun,butI preparedmyselfasmuchasIcouldto beabletopackmysuitcaseandleave last-minute.Fortunatelyitpaidoff. Taiwan’sborderswerestillclosed,but duringsummertheydecidedtoadd exchangestudentstothelistof exceptions.OnAugust17thIgotmyvisa andonSeptember1stIboardedthe planetoleavefortheunknown.Iarrived

lateduringtheeveningatTPEairport. Whatfollowedwasawholeprocessof pre-covidmeasures.Itwasabizarre experienceincludingmeandmy suitcasesbeingsprayedinalcohol disinfectantfromtoptobottom.A specialquarantinetaxitransportedme toTaipeianddroppedmeoffatmy quarantinehotelwhereIneededtostay for8days.Quarantinereallymeantto stayinyourroomandnotputevenone footoutthedoor.Acrazyexperiencebut alsoareallyboringone,solet’shope thisliterallywasa“onceinalifetime” thing.

OnceIwasallowedtoleavethehotelI hoppedinataxiandwenttostraightto myhomeforthesemester. UnfortunatelyIdidn’tgetassigneda roominthestudentdormatNTU,butI wasabletofindaroominashared apartmentthroughFacebookbeforeI left.Thelocationturnedouttobe excellent,inbetweenGutingand DongmenMRTstation.(MRTmeaning MassRapidTransit,akatheTaipei Metro,andit’samazing).Moreover,two ofmyflatmateswereTaiwanese,sothey couldhelpmeunderstandtheirculture andhabitswhichwasveryhelpfulinthe

Apartfromthefoodthereismoreto loveaboutTaipei(andTaiwanin general).IhaveneverfeltassafeasIdid inTaiwan,evenwhenwalkingonthe streetlateatnightbymyself.Moreover, everythingisverywell-organized.Asan example,GoogleMapseventracksthe buses,trainsandMRTs,sowhereverI wantedtogoIjustneededtoplugitin intheappandIwouldbethereexactly attheexpectedtime.Moreover,there’sa 7-ElevenorFamilyMart(aka conveniencestore)oneverycornerof thestreet,andtheyprovideyouwith reallyanynecessityorservicethatyou canthinkof.Furthermore,Taiwanhasa subtropicalclimate,soIfeellikeI skippedwinterandit’sdark,cold,short daysthisyear.Evenmid-DecemberI laidonthebeachandswamintheseain thesouthernpartofTaiwan.This certainlywasoneofthereasonswhyI decidedtogothere.Duetoitsclimate thefloraandfaunatobefoundin Taiwanisverydiverseanddefinitely somethingdifferentfromtheDutch landscapes.JustoutsideofTaipeiyou’ll findloadsofwaterfallsandnaturalhot

springs.Therearealsomultiple NationalParksinTaiwan,ofwhich TarokoandKentingarethefavoriteones thatI’vevisited.IalsolovedGreen IslandandLambaiIsland,twosmall islandslocatedjustoffthecoastof Taiwan.Moreover,apartfromTaipei therearealotofotherfunvillagesand vibrantcitiestovisit,ofwhich Kaohsiungwasoneofmyfavoritesas thevibeactuallyremindedmeof Eindhoven.Inshort,thereisjustso muchtoexploreinTaiwanthatIdid evennotleavethecountryuntilthe semesterendedasIneverranoutof placestodiscover.

Ofcoursetheinitialreasonforgoingto Taipeiwastostudyandobtaincredits formymaster’sprogram.Thestories youalwayshearaboutcoursesbeing easierabroaddefinitelyholdsforNTU aswell.However,whatisspecialabout NTUisthekindofcoursestheyofferfor credits.Icouldchooseanycoursefrom anydepartment,soIdecidedtodothree coursesthatweresomewhatrelatedto businessandindustrialengineering, andtwocoursesjustforfun.Thefirstof thesetwowasICL(International CompanionsforLearning)whereyou getpairedupwithalocalTaiwanese studenttodoaSkypecallonceaweek withagroupofkidsfromaprimary schoolsomewhereinTaiwan.Mykids werecalledMason,WilsonandXavier, andtheyweresuperadorable.Wetalked aboutourownlife,culture,interests, playedsomeonlinegames,andjusthad

alaugh.Thesecond‘funcourse’was calledtheScienceofJoyfulLiving, wherewedidthreehoursofyoga, meditationandothermindfulness practiceseveryThursday.Something completelyoutofmycomfortzone,but that’salsowhatgoingabroadisfor, right?It’sstillcrazytothinkthatIgot12 ECTSforbasicallyplayingPictionary withkids,anddoingyogaand meditation,butthisispartofwhythe wholeexchangeexperiencewasso great.

Surroundingyourselfwiththeright people

Piplabwasfoundedin2020,right beforethestartofthepandemic. ThehardwarecomponentthatJeroen andhisteamhavecreatedistheHSIbox.ThefirstfocusoftheHSI-boxis themeasurementofdustparticleson windows.Institutions,suchasthe TU/e,mightatthemomentdo periodiccleaningofalltheirwindows, whilesomemightnotevenbedirtyat all,andsomewaytoodirty.TheHSIboxsendsalaserbeamtothewindow, andbytheamountoflightthat reflectsfromthewindowthedirtiness canbedetermined.Inthelive dashboard,customerscanseehow dirtytheirwindowsareandeven decidewhentobenotified.Youmight imaginethatthewindowsontheside ofthebuildingwhereatraindrivesby every5minutesaremuchdirtierthan thoseontheotherside,orthat companiesdecidethatthereception mustbeascleanaspossible,butthe 12thfloorcanbemoderatelyclean. Usingthelivedashboard,companies canreallyactontheirneedsand thereforeprofitfromtheunique solutionsofHSI

Currently,theirpatentapplicationis pendingwhichwilllegallyprotectthe start-up.Nexttothis,HSIislooking forinvestmentstofurthercontinue theirresearchintothetechnology. Theirstrategywillbetofirstenrollon theDutchmarketwithapotentialof 40.000boxes,followedbyCalifornia andNYCwhichholdtheopportunity forplacinguptoonemillionboxes.In ordertorealizetheirgrowth estimationsthestart-upisseekingfor fundingwhichissomethingJeroenis currentlybusywith.Inordertorun thecompany,Heimdallisrenting officespaceinbuildingAlphaatthe TU/ecampuswhichistheidealspace forpreparingmeetingsand discussingthestrategicdecisionsthe companyhastotake.

AfterthatImadeatransitiontoGartner, whereIworkedasseniorresearch director.CurrentlyIworkasan independentadvisorinsupplychain planning.Iamalsoactiveasacoachand boardmemberforsupplychain startups.FromtimetotimeIwriteand presentabouttrendsinsupplychain planningandbusinesstransformation. Thegreatthingaboutmycareeruntil now,isthatIhaveworkedinalmostall partsoftheend-to-endsupplychain, gainedexperienceinmanydifferent industries,andgottoworkalloverthe worldandhadtheopportunitytomeet manyinterestingpeople.

BynatureIamcuriousandalwayslike tolearn.Thatiswhyitmakesmehappy whenIcanworkoninnovativetopics, gathernewinsightsandworkin differentenvironments.Thatisalso whyregularly,myassignmentsstart withacontentdrivenquestions. However,veryoftenthequestioncomes tothetableonhowtodrivechangeand

howpeopleshouldbehaveinthat.Itis greatifIcanbuildtherelationshipand trusttohelpwiththesequestionsas well.Itisreallyrewardingtohearfrom peopleonhowyouhavehelpedthemby askingquestions,providingthemwith honestfeedbackorreflectingontheir challenges.

Whatwasthemostimportantmoment inyourcareerandwhy?

Themostimportantmomentinmy careerwastostartmyowncompany. Itwasscary(andsometimesstillis)to giveupthecertaintyofafixedincome andcontract,andnottoknowwhatI willbedoingin3monthsfromnow.

Butitalsochallengesmetoget outsideofmycomfortzoneandthat isreallyrewarding.Icanexperiment muchmorethatIwasusedtoin previousjobs,forexample developingnewpropositionsonhow Icanworkwithdifferentcompanies. ThesuccessofwhatIdoisforlarge extenddependingonmyowneffort. Italsohelpsmetobalancemy professionalandpersonallifeina betterway.Andthemaybethebest thingofbeingmoreentrepreneurial istogetincontactwithinspiring peoplethatoftenprovidemewith newinsights.

IalwaysthoughtIwasgoingtohave acareerinabigcorporateof consultancyfirm.Andthatisalso howisstartedoffmycareer. However,thefurthermycareerwas advancing,themoreIrealizedIwas doingthingsIdidn’tgetenergyfrom anymoreandfeltcomfortablewith. SometimesalsoIfeltconstrainedby theboundariesoftherolesIwas doing.

Icametotherealizationthatmy strengthareinchallengingthestatus quoandhelptodevelopinnovating waysofworkinginthesupplychain. Ifoundthatformeitworksmuch bettertodothatexternalsparring partnerbeingfullyindependent, moreobjectiveandbringingexternal insightsthatIgatheredthroughout mycareerandfromothercustomers Iworkwith.Comingtothat conclusionhasbroughtmealotof peaceofmind.

Whatyoulearninuniversityisoften sofaraheadofwhatpeoplearedoing inbusiness,thatyou’vegotplentyof timetofigureouthowtoruna companyinthemeantime.
