“Skn in the Game” CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED GLOBALLY TO COMBAT SKIN CANER
Join your fellow golfers in this critical fight BY CHRISTINE LOOMIS
What you don’t know can kill you. At no time is that truer than when you’re talking about skin cancer, the most prevalent cancer in the world— and the one with the fewest organizations and accessible resources behind it. One group is on a mission to change that, and education, technology and science-based information are the tools they’re wielding. Skn ue is a nonprofit approval is nearing completion working with a host of well-known partners to change dire statistics related to skin cancer—a cancer that’s particularly relevant in the golf industry given that day in and day out PGA and LPGA Tour pros play the game outdoors and often under harsh sun, as do many golfing amateurs and weekend warrior across the globe. Fact: Full sun is not the only danger. Being outdoors on a cloudy day without proper protection is equally high risk for skin cancer. Not only is skin cancer the most prevalent cancer, it’s also increasing. In 2016 one person died every 59 minutes of skin cancer; today, that number is two people each hour, yet skin cancer is the most curable of all cancers. So why aren’t more of these deaths being prevented?

Dan Mechem, chairman and co-founder of SknVue, believes it comes down in large part to education and access to meaningful resources and tools, and that’s exactly what Mechem and co-founder and CEO Randy Wyant plan to put directly into the hands of people everywhere. Although they’re focusing first on domestic outreach, the goal from the start has been to go global, something they say no other organization related to skin cancer has done. They’ve already partnered with the LPGA, and a cadre of industry veterans sit on SknVue’s board, including Dottie Pepper, Nancy Lopez, Juli Inkster, Helen Alfredsson, Andy North and Randy Jones. The organization has also garnered support from skin-cancer survivors, including Charles S. Mechem, Jr., former commissioner of the LPGA and Dan’s father. Eventually the plan is to connect with partners on the European and Asian tours, among others. “We’ll be reaching out to a broad mosaic of partners,” Dan Mechem says. “But we’re putting our domestic program into place first.” The group has already launched its first campaign, Skn in the Game, which aims to get the message out about the danger of skin cancer and how to prevent it. “Skn in the Game is an immediate, urgent global call-to-action campaign for everyone to pay attention to their skin wellness,” Wyant says. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, the perfect time to launch a new fundraising and awareness effort they’re calling, A Dollar A Day
In May. Mechem hopes everyone will give at least $31 (just one dollar a day), which will put free skincancer apps in the hands of five people. Donations of $50 to $500 help provide services for those who can’t afford them, from a telemedicine consult with a skin-cancer specialist to a complete skin-cancer screening and more. This is just the start. It’s too early to talk specifics about future initiatives, but they’ll collectively push to get solid information and cutting-edge technology for skin-cancer detection into the hands of individuals. Mechem and Wyant want to empower golfers and others by providing them with the tools they need to direct their own well-being. One element of SknVue’s forthcoming program is something they’re calling Skn Stories, featuring golf pros and others telling their personal and powerful stories about skin cancer. The organization is working on social media, videos, podcasts and marketing programs to promote these efforts. Mechem is particularly excited about these stories, which he believes can be transformative for the audience. Maybe that’s because for him, skin cancer is very personal. In 2020 his best friend died of the disease, very quickly; he had never even been to see a dermatologist. And his father had several surgeries to remove cancerous cells, which fortunately were caught early. Additionally, Mechem says, “It turns out a lot of first responders from 9/11 have skin cancer from various chemicals they were exposed to. Some have already died and some are dying now.” FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM
Skin cancer is insidious but knowledge can halt its advance. Wyant, who has been in the healthcare industry for decades, points to examples of critical facts many people don’t know. “Some sunscreens have chemicals in them that actually damage your skin,” he says. “Some people think you get benefits from tanning beds and they won’t harm you—not true. There are diagnostic tools used by doctors in other countries that aren’t widely used here because of our fee-based system, meaning doctors don’t get reimbursed for using them so they don’t.” The good news is that technology, programs and resources exist that everyday people can use to protect themselves from skin cancer and the folks at SknVue want them to be available in one easy, accessible place. How exactly that rolls out will be revealed over the coming months but think of it as a survival kit loaded with powerful but simple tools that can keep you from becoming a statistic in this very treatable disease, tools to ultimately turn the tide on skin cancer’s deadly advance. Mechem doesn’t mince words. Our goal with this Dollar a Day in May campaign is to reach out to people and say, “Donate. The Copperhead’s elevation tests the best players in the world each year. The 7,340-yard, par-71 brute, designed by the imaginative architect Lawrence Packard, is one of the PGA Tour’s favorite stops. Paul Azinger, a 12-time PGA Tour winner, called it the best course the PGA Tour plays. The Copperhead meanders through beautiful trees and landscaping with water strategically placed to test golfers of all levels. Innisbrook’s other courses offer an enjoyable challenge as well. Finish With a Flourish: Daytona Beach’s Top 5 18th Holes As you daydream about your next golf trip, here are five of Daytona Beach’s premier finishing holes: 1 With water running along the entire left side, both the tee shot and approach are nervy on the closing hole at LPGA’s Jones Course, a 388-yard (all distances from white tees) par 4.
2 Not to be outdone, the par 4 18th on LPGA’s Hills Course presents an even more significant challenge. The dogleg left plays 374 yards and the tee shot needs to favor the right-center of the fairway, lest players run the risk of having their path to the green blocked by pine trees.
3 DeBary Golf Club’s closing hole is a dogleg right par 4 that plays 401 yards, and a tree-lined fairway demands an accurate drive. The day’s final approach is to a green with sand and water standing guard on the right side, limiting your margin for error.
