The Gulf Coast has long been known as a golfer’s paradise, with weather that’s favorable for year-round play. Home to three championship courses, 320 days of sunshine a year, and an average temperature of 74 degrees, PCB is no exception. Whether you’re a beginner, an amateur or a seasoned professional, you’ll find a course to fit your skill level. And thanks to affordable green fees and year-round tee times, you can enjoy golfing in paradise, complete with 162 different chances for a hole-in-one.

“Golfers from all over the country continue to

visit Panama City Beach for its challenging, beautiful courses and endless sunshine,” says President and CEO of Visit Panama City Beach Dan Rowe. “With greens and fairways that never disappoint, visitors always come back for an unparalleled golf vacation at the Real. FUN. Beach.”

Between the challenging marshlands of Bay Point Golf Club, the forgiving fairways of Holiday Golf Club and the historic surroundings of Signal Hill Golf Course, you’re sure to find the perfect greens for your getaway. And afterward, stick around for the drinks, dining and expert-level pro shops.

BAY POINT GOLF CLUB AT SHERATON PANAMA CITY BEACH GOLF & SPA RESORT

The Nicklaus Course at the Sheraton Panama City Beach Golf & Spa Resort is the first and only Nicklaus Design course in Northwest Florida. Recognized for its premium conditioning and risk-reward opportunities, the Nicklaus Course is situated in a nature preserve and set against the backdrop of St. Andrews Bay with scenic coastal vistas throughout. In fact, the signature fifth hole offers a spectacular tee shot to an island fairway in the middle of Grand Lagoon, with a second shot to a peninsula green overlooking the bay.

The par-72 championship layout has a challenging course rating of 74.5 and slope of 137 as it stretches more than 7,000 yards from the championship tees. Located only minutes from the beach, the celebrated course has hosted numerous regional and local events, including the USGA U.S. Open Qualifier in 2016. In the summer of 2018, the Nicklaus Course underwent a greens conversion that involved a full-till process. This major renovation included upgrading the original specs of the greens with ultra-dwarf grass to improve course playability, green speeds and green receptiveness yearround. The renovation also included new greenside bunkers on all holes throughout the course.

Whether a professional, an amateur or a beginner, there is something for golf enthusiasts of all skill levels and interests. For those looking to learn tips and tricks from the pros, the resort offers Dewsweepers Golf Instruction, providing state-of-the-art lessons that include video analysis. The resort golf club also includes a full-service practice facility and Bar 72 Pub & Eatery, where players can enjoy a hearty lunch and refreshing cocktail after a round. Bay Point Golf Club is located at 4701 Bay Point Road in Panama City Beach. For more information or to book tee times, call 850-235-6950 or visit baypointgolfclub.com.

HOLIDAY GOLF CLUB

Centrally located in the heart of Panama City Beach is the one and only Holiday Golf Club. Designed by Jim Dunkerley in 1964, the 6,859yard, 18-hole championship course features forgiving fairways and TifEagle turf, ideal for speed and consistency and a favorite among both locals and visitors. For junior golfers and beginners, Holiday Golf Club offers the area’s only lighted par-3 course. Open into the night, this course allows golfers to play a quick 60-minute game on its 1,003 yards. With PGA Professional Class A pros available for private, 60-minute lessons, the practice facilities also provide the perfect setting for golfers to work on their game, from pitching to putting. The club also features a pro shop and Mulligan’s Bar & Grill, offering breakfast, lunch and a fully stocked bar. Holiday Golf Club is located at 100

SIGNAL HILL GOLF COURSE

Signal Hill Golf Course opened in 1962, making it the oldest course in Panama City Beach. Rich in history and natural beauty, it has delighted guests with reasonable rates and a kind, attentive staff for decades. With challenging greens, precise fairways and 5,617 yards of golf from the longest tees, golfers quickly find out why the 18-hole course is the perfect golf experience for families, beginning golfers and old pros who want to enjoy a relaxing round. Signal Hill is also Panama City Beach’s closest golf course to the beach, featuring relatively flat but masterful holes that are both challenging and laid-back. With a pro shop and snack bar on the property, Signal Hill has all the amenities golfers need for an afternoon on the course. Designed by John Sherman and now owned by his daughter Beth Langford, the course is still a local family affair. Langford’s son is also a course manager and her grandson works in the pro shop. Signal Hill Golf Course is located at 9615 Thomas Drive in Panama City. For more information about the facility or to book a tee time, call 850-234-5051 or visit signalhillgolfcourse.com.

In addition to offering a collection of courses for novice, leisure and serious golfers, Panama City Beach provides ample entertainment off

the course. From offshore fishing charters, kayak tours, stand-up paddleboard adventures, and sunset dolphin tours to pristine beaches, premier shopping, live music venues and the best seafood restaurants on the Gulf, there is truly something for everyone. Having been named TripAdvisor’s No. 2 “Emerging Destination” in the world, PCB is one place you don’t want to miss.

If golf is in your vacation game plan, you’ll enjoy the total package that is Panama City Beach. Come discover why this coastal destination has been named one of the nation’s top three golf towns by Golf Digest and return home with lasting memories.

IT’S BACK TO NORMAL FOR THE 2023 FLORIDA GRAPEFRUIT LEAGUE SEASON

Major League Baseball Spring Training to Play Full Pre-Season in Florida

For the first time since 2020, the 15 Major League Baseball teams in the Florida Grapefruit League are scheduled to play at full schedule of games beginning on Saturday, February 25 and running through Tuesday, March 28, 2023.

For reasons still fresh in the memories of baseball fans everywhere, the 2020, 2021 and 2022 Florida Spring Training schedules were cut short.

With that in mind, we can all look forward,

once again, games beginning at 1:00 p.m. under the March sun, with plenty of time to enjoy the Florida amenities, pre- and post-game.

There’s the usual fun comings and goings of players and from the end of the 2022 season to spring training 2023, there was plenty of movement.

For the first time since 2004, St. Louis Cardinals fans at Roger Dean Chevrolet

Stadium, will be watching someone other than Yadier Molina donning the “tools of ignorance.” The Redbirds fixture behind the plate announced his retirement after the 2022 season. Now calling pitches will be Wilson Contreras, among others in Jupiter.

The 2022 American League Cy Young Award winner, Justin Verlander, moves north from the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches and the

20 \\ FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM

Houston Astros to the New York Mets and Clover Park. It’s a much-needed addition to the Mets pitching staff with the loss of fellow Cy Young Award-winner Jacob DeGrom.

Trea Turner returns to the Florida Grapefruit League and will be in action in a Philadelphia Phillies uniform at Clearwater’s BayCare Ballpark. Kevin Keirmeier will be patrolling centerfield at TD Ballpark for the Toronto Blue Jays instead of Charlotte Sports Park for the Tampa Bay Rays.

When the Rays report for Spring Training it won’t be to Port Charlotte on Florida’s Southwest Coast. In early December, the Tampa Bay Rays announced their 2023 spring training camp will be relocated from Port Charlotte due to damage to the facility caused by Hurricane Ian, in September, 2022.

The Rays are considering several options for a new spring base, including Tropicana Field, the Disney complex formerly used by the Braves, and a Fort Myers location. Check www.floridagrapefruitleague.com for the latest information.

It’s another year of trying to identify which young players will emerge from “the backfields.” Michael Harris and Spencer Strider, of the Atlanta Braves accomplished the feat at CoolToday Park and were the top two finishers of the 2022 Rookie of the Year voting. Harris,

the 2022 National League Rookie of the YUear, had four hits in 15 at bats in last year’s Florida Grapefruit League action and Strider pitched only 2.1 innings, in one spring start.

Fans can also be on the lookout for International Baseball opponents during the 2023 Florida Spring Training season. The Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals are slated to host World Baseball Classic opponents, on March 8 and 9.

Even with all of the changes entering the 2023 season, The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches welcome back two of the most familiar faces in Major League Baseball still wearing the same uniform. Stephen Strasburg returns for his 14th season with the Washington Nationals and Jose Altuve is back for the Houston Astros for his 13th season.

One final note for attending a spring training game. If you’re a fan of seeing more players on the field, go to the early games in the schedule, from February 15 through March 10. If you want to see the regulars play for four innings or more catch the games from March 11 through March 28. As the regular season approaches, the more established players start getting their reps.

Check out www.lforidagrapefruitleague.com for schedules and ticket prices for all 15 teams in one place and follow @FlaSpringTrain on Twitter.

Discover Lake County,

Located a short drive directly west of Orlando, Lake County is a premier sports destination. Whether you are hosting a championship event, team training, corporate getaway or leisurely traveling, Lake County’s natural resources and topnotch facilities welcome competitors of all levels. Nestled among the rolling hills of Central Florida, visitors can find Mission Inn Resort & Club in the town of Howey-in-the-Hills.

Mission Inn Resort’s two golf courses are wonderfully complementary. El Campeón (The Champion) — one of the oldest courses in the South, with classic design elements to prove it— showcases unusually sharp elevation changes in usually flat central Florida. The course is featured on the historic Florida golf trail. Las Colinas (The Hills) lives up to its name with wide fairways rolling over gentle rises. Both courses feature large, undulating greens, are surrounded by tropical vegetation, and incorporate large water hazards on many holes.

Mission Inn features 176 graciously appointed guestrooms, suites and villas; three restaurants, two lounges and a poolside bar. Recreational amenities also include tennis, trap and skeet shooting range, jogging and bicycling trails, volleyball courts, out-

door pool and hydro-spa, fitness center, and a marina offering fishing, powerboat and eco-touring. The 6,200-squarefoot Spa Marbella provides

an extensive menu of treatments and services. More than 30,000 square feet of well-appointed indoor and outdoor event space is available for meetings, banquets, holiday parties, weddings and special occasions.

Lake County is truly Florida’s Lakeside Escape with multiple waterfront downtowns and rich history to discover. The City of Mount Dora has an array of small businesses, antique shops and cuisine from around the world. Catch a seaplane ride in Downtown Tavares to Downtown Clermont and “lake hop” to the best breweries around. There’s so much more to discover and do in Lake County.

STREAMSONG RESORT - Bowling Green, FL

Central Florida The Hidden Gem of Florida Golf

Golfers who live in Central Florida already know, and more visitors are beginning to learn, some truly fantastic golf opportunities abound throughout Central Florida’s Polk County. With more than 40 public access courses offering 612 holes of golf, Central Florida’s Polk County boasts one of the top collections of golf courses in the United States. Golf groups traveling to the area will find a wide range of course options and unforgettable off-course activities that will make your Central Florida trip one to remember.

UNIQUE COURSE OFFERINGS

With so many course offerings it is very difficult to pick our favorites, but when it comes to distinctive course design, one has to begin the conversation with Streamsong Resort. Streamsong Resort’s Red Course, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, the Blue Course designed by Tom Doak and the Black Course designed by Gil Hanse, utilize the natural contours, sand dunes and native grasses to offer a golf experience that is reminiscent of the links-style courses of the British Isles. Built upon reclaimed phosphate mining land, Streamsong’s courses are atypical of most Florida golf courses.

Southern Dunes Golf & Country Club stretches out to more than 7,200 yards from the championship tees and this demanding layout features high ornamental grasses and decorative plantings, paired with 180 distinctively colored bunkers that provide spectacular visual appeal throughout your round of golf.

The Club at Eaglebrooke provides a challenging, but fair test of golf for players of all ability levels. Oak trees, numerous lakes and strategically placed mounding define the lush rolling fairways, and visually frame each hole as from the tee.

BREWS, BLUES AND BARBEQUE

Once the golf clubs have been put away, and the side bets settled, your group can then explore some of the great local dining and entertainment offerings that are available throughout Central Florida’s Polk County.

With more than 550 lakes dotting Polk County, locals and visitors alike all have their favorite lakeside dining spot. In Winter Haven, with full length windows and a lakeside patio, Harborside Restaurant is a modern American steakhouse, seafood and oyster bar featuring the finest cuts of dry aged meat and daily

delivered fresh fish. Also in Winter Haven, with its neighborhood restaurant feel and its location on the shores of Lake Ned, no place epitomizes casual lakefront dining more than Harry’s Old Place. Situated on the shores of scenic Lake Pierce.

Lakeland’s Lake Mirror is best known for its large events and being a perfect place to catch a spectacular sunset over downtown Lakeland, the lake also serves as the backdrop for Texas Cattle Company, the place for those that have a craving for a nice juicy steak cooked over a specially built open-pit mesquite wood fire.

A trip to Florida wouldn’t be complete without fresh seafood. Gary’s Oyster Bar & Seafood House in Lake Alfred is known for its eclectic décor, friendly service and fresh seafood. Crazy Fish Bar and Grill is well worth the drive to Lake Wales. For a little taste of Louisiana, Harry’s Seafood Bar & Grille in Lakeland, serves up some good ‘ole down home Cajun favorites.

Mojo Federal Swine and Spirits has transformed Lakeland’s Federal Building into the newest culinary and entertainment experience. Mojo Federal is a premier barbecue, southern food, and craft cocktail destination.

38 \\ FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM

In Central Florida, Lakeland has served as the leader in the brewpub movement. Brew Hub is a partner brewing enterprise that brings together a number of smaller craft brewers to brew their beer. The Brew Hub Tasting Room serves locally sourced, naturally raised, made to order food options that are great for pairing with their beers. Swan Brewing offers lakefront views and microbrews just a few blocks from downtown. Kick back in the taproom or relax on the patio as you sip on a selection of more than 20 seasonal and small-batch beers. Brimming with authenticity and local love, Winter Haven’s Grove Roots Brewing Company looks to create inventive, artisanal beers. With names like “Rind & Shine” and “6am Pickers” scrawled onto the chalkboard tap list, there’s no question Grove Roots is serious about bringing Polk County’s citrus heritage to life. While they don’t serve

food, Grove Roots has a rotating roster of food trucks available for those wishing to eat. On Friday and Saturday nights, live music is offered at the venue.

After a long day on the course, and after a delicious meal, the way to cap off the evening is with a trip to the Lakeland Loft Cigar Bar and Jazz Club, an ultra-premium upscale Jazz and cigar lounge, located in historic downtown Lakeland. The Lakeland Loft offers a unique musical experience featuring talented local musicians, with live Jazz performances every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.

TAKE IN A GAME

No matter what time of year you visit Central Florida, your group can catch some professional sports action. Lakeland has been the spring training home of the Detroit Tigers for more than 80 years. From late February through the month of March, you can catch the Detroit Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium as they face other Grapefruit League teams such as the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and the Baltimore Orioles. In fact, there are five other MLB teams within an hour’s drive of Lakeland, making it the perfect “home base” for an extended golf and Spring Training tour.

If you prefer the hardcourt to the baseball diamond, Lakeland’s RP Funding Center is home from November to March to the Lakeland Magic, Orlando Magic’s G league affiliate. The Center also plays host to the Major Arena Soccer League’s Florida Tropics from December through April. Each May through July, the Tropics take to the outdoor soccer pitch as they compete in the United Soccer League, one of the MSL’s professional soccer development leagues.

CHOOSE EVERYTHING

Central Florida’s Polk County is one of the most beautiful and affordable golf destinations in Florida. While not as widely known as its more commercial neighbors, Orlando and Tampa, Polk County is a “hidden gem” that offers hundreds of unique attractions, both natural and man-made, that will provide your golf group with plenty of off-course thrills for the young and old alike. For more details or information on all of our local restaurants and craft breweries, our nightlife and entertainment offerings and exciting area attractions, log on to www.VisitCentralFlorida. org to begin planning your group’s Central Florida golf experience.

ORLANDO, FL
BY THE GREATS NICKLAUS | PALMER | WATSON Tee off at an Orlando golf destination beyond compare with three signature golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Tom Watson! Reunion Resort offers ten swimming pools, world-class restaurants, a full water park, and other exciting amenities. Visit ReunionResort.com

Reunion Resort & Golf Club

Reunion Resort and Golf Club offers a golfing experience unlike any other in the world. Receiving accolades and awards from several golf publications, Reunion is the only place you will find three Signature Design courses by golf’s greatest legends: Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, and Arnold Palmer.

If you find yourself at Reunion, and you only have time for one course, we recommend the Palmer course. It’s the least challenging of the three, but it boasts the most spectacular views of the resort. You will play through bunkers, lush greenery, and some of our luxury rental homes. The Palmer 7 hole is the most iconic of all 36 holes at Reunion. You might recognize Palmer 7 by its vantage point of the long winding bridge over a sparkling pond with the resort’s Grande Tower standing elegantly in the distance. The Palmer course offers 6,916 yards of rolling terrain with elevation changes up to 50 feet.

The Watson course is adjacent to the Palmer. Both start just behind the Clubhouse restaurant and Pro Shop. The Clubhouse serves a traditional American breakfast and lunch and is a great spot for a cup of coffee before heading out to the driving range or your morning tee time. Once on the course, you will encounter wide-open greens, rolling fairways, and strategically placed bunkers. Club selection is crucial for this course.

The most challenging of Reunion’s three courses is the Nicklaus course. Located on the other side of the resort property and winding through parts of the nature reserve, the Nicklaus course can be a bit quieter and more scenic than Watson or Palmer. This course provides long fairways and

challenging water hazards. At the end of the course, you can wave to your fans as they watch from the clubhouse veranda, which features panoramic views of the 18th green. Inside the Nicklaus Clubhouse, you’ll find men’s and women’s locker rooms with showers, the Pro Shop, and a tavern-style restaurant called Traditions. Traditions is the ideal spot for your post-round meal and celebratory beverages.

Reunion Resort has been consistently recognized for providing a premier golf experience in Central Florida since 2005. Director of Golf and Course Maintenance, Scott Scamehorn, has implemented a new approach to golf course maintenance and care, ensuring the courses are “tournament-ready” every day.

“We’re concentrating our efforts down the center lines, while really working hard on perfecting the consistency in playing conditions,” stated Scamehorn. Scamehorn joined Reunion’s team in the spring of 2020, and since then, he has worked with his team to transform Reunion’s courses into three of Florida’s best. “We’re managing all three courses as one,” said Scamehorn. “We’ve adjusted mowing frequency along with pest management and water conservation to improve daily course conditions.”

Open to resort guests and members, Reunion’s rolling greens stretch across the 2,300-acre resort, just minutes from Walt Disney World®

and other famous Orlando attractions. Reunion attracts avid golfers from around the world looking to experience an enhanced level of play with exceptional conditions and unique course layouts designed by three PGA legends. With spacious multi-room villas and luxury vacation homes featuring up to 13 bedrooms, this property is an easy option for golf trips.

In addition to golf, Reunion Resort amenities include a mini-golf course, multiple tennis and pickleball courts with a Pro Shop, casual and fine dining, 10 community pools, a five-acre waterpark, and 25,000 square feet of meeting and event space. Whether it’s a family vacation, a golf trip with the guys, or a girls’ trip, Reunion has something for everyone.

GREAT GOLF AWAITS IN

Daytona Beach

Many destinations struggle to define themselves, but that’s never been an issue for Daytona Beach. When you are the home of Daytona International Speedway – stock car racing’s most celebrated track – and the “World’s Most Famous Beach,” you are by nature a destination people identify with. Great as the speedway and beach are, savvy

GOLF’S FASTEST DESTINATION: DAYTONA BEACH

Speed is always a topic of conversation in Daytona Beach from late January through February when the sports world turns its attention to the DAYTONA 500. Golfers, of course, are in search of their own version of speed: courses with great pace of play.

As surely as Daytona Beach is a mecca for auto racing enthusiasts, the area is equally appealing for golfers in search of a fast round.

If you want to play in four hours or less, here are three Daytona Beach golf courses where the caution flag is never waved.

CRANE LAKES, a par 66 that plays 5,186 yards from the tips, has eight par 3s and a pair of par 5s, requiring golfers to hit every club in the bag.

A PAR 69, HIDDEN LAKES is an ideal course to play on the first day of a trip, as it will give everyone in your group a chance to score. The layout is 5,454 yards from the tips and doesn’t have a par 4 that plays 400 yards.

RIVIERA COUNTRY CLUB is the longest courses on our list at 6,250 yards from the tips, but this is an oldschool layout designed with pace of play in mind. There is ample room to hit the ball and greens and tee boxes are in close proximity.

Daytona Beach is home to nearly 30 courses and all of them emphasize pace of play, but you will likely reach the checkered flag first Crane Lakes, Hidden Lakes and Riviera.

golfers view them as complementary pieces for an area that has earned a reputation as one of the game’s most underrated spots.

Daytona Beach strikes the perfect balance between unforgettable golf, value and the reality that the fun is just beginning when the final putt drops each day.

As the home of nearly 20 courses, including the acclaimed Jones and Hills layouts at LPGA International and a pair of Donald Ross designs, Daytona Beach has something for every golf group.

The Jones and Hills courses have tested LPGA legends such as Annika Sorenstam and Karrie Webb, and the South Course at Daytona Beach Golf Club, a Ross layout, once hosted a legendary match featuring Ben Hogan, Sam Snead and Byron Nelson.

THE FUN NEVER STOPS

Complementing Daytona Beach’s on-course offerings are a seemingly endless array of activities. From the beach and the speedway to deep sea fishing and everything in between, the only thing golfers continually want more of is time.

The area’s off-course attractions begin with Daytona International Speedway, where a tour of the track and a visit to the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America are a must. The truly ambitious may also want to enjoy the NASCAR Racing Experience, which offers the opportunity to get in a stock car and either ride or drive around the famed 2.5-mile trioval, 31-degree banked track.

After an exhilarating trip to the Speedway, a visit to ONE DAYTONA, the area’s newest dining, shopping and entertainment complex located directly across the street is not to be missed.

Daytona Beach enjoys 23 miles of expansive coastline. Some sections are pedestrian only while others allow cars to drive, very slowly, and park on one of the nation’s most stunning beaches. At low tide, the beach is up to 500 feet wide providing ample room for everyone to enjoy the beautiful white sand.

GOOD EATS, ALE TRAIL

Daytona Beach is also home to a thriving craft beer scene. Any group in search of a quality brew will enjoy the Daytona Beach Ale Trail, a collection of more than 20 breweries and taprooms that feature outstanding local offerings.

While Daytona Beach has deep ties to golf’s rich history, contemporary layouts like Victoria Hills, a memorable Ron Garl design, and DeBary Golf Club, which has served as a U.S. Open qualifying site, only add to the area’s appeal.

Highlighting their commitment providing premium conditions, Halifax Plantation recently installed new greens, ensuring the Bill Amick design remains a favorite for locals and visitors alike.

STAY-AND-PLAY

Make no mistake, golf is the star on a Daytona Beach buddies trip but where a group stays matters, too. Daytona Beach welcomes visitors year-round and the rooms – ranging from oceanfront resorts to familiar national brands and independent boutique properties – that host family beach vacations during the summer months are perfect for golfers throughout the rest of the year.

Daytona Beach provides a number of golf package offerings, which maximize value and convenience, allowing players to customize trips to fit their budget and preferences.

Golfers that want to pair a glass of wine with an outstanding meal will appreciate the quality and diversity of Daytona Beach’s wine bars and restaurant offerings, which feature everything from ocean views and fresh seafood to premium steakhouses.

Daytona Beach is the rare destination that has the ability to be all things to all people, and golfers have taken notice.

Stay Active and Stay Competitive in the Florida Senior Games

Plenty of Fall 2023 Opportunities Ahead

For golfers age 50 and over, the Florida Senior Games is an opportunity to mix and mingle with like-minded individuals on a variety of golf courses in the State of Florida.

While the 2023 Florida Senior Games golf competition isn’t scheduled until Monday, December 4, 2023 at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club, in Dade City, there are qualifying opportunities beginning in September. To advance to the Florida Senior Games, men and women must qualify in the top five of their age groups at a Florida Senior Games Series Qualifier. Those events are held in nine locations as far north as Pensacola and Jacksonville to Fort Lauderdale and Port Charlotte on the south end of the peninsula.

Florida Senior Games age groups begin with the 50-54 age groups for those starting out in the Senior Games experience and advance, in five year intervals, into the 90s age groups. You’re always playing with someone around your own age.

At the 2022 Florida Senior Games, played at the Fox Hollow Golf Course, in Trinity, Richard Cheney, of Winter Haven, was the

most experienced golfer on the course at age 93. Cheney finished the day shooting a 90, to win the gold medal in the 90-94 age group and qualify for the 2023 National Senior Games.

The overall best score was recorded by Nick Kent, of Lady Lake, and Calvin James Pfrogner, from Sarasota, with a 76. Kent won the 75-79 age group gold medal while Pfrogner was the 80-84 age group gold medalist. The overall best women’s score was shot by Jodi Kest, of The Villages, with a 78 to win the 60-64 age group gold medal.

While the talent level of Florida Senior Games golfers is not lacking, it’s all about a day on the golf course and the camaraderie involved in sports and living an active and healthy lifestyle after the age of 50.

Besides golf, the Florida Senior Games, and its local qualifying events, offer a variety of other sports and events to keep active and healthy. The September through December events listed above are only the fall events taking place statewide. Spring qualifiers will begin in January of 2024 and continue through April in locations such as Lee County, Sarasota/Bradenton, Tallahassee, Clearwater and The Villages.

Swing by the Sea in Martin County –

An Under-the-Radar Golfer’s Paradise in South Florida

Avid golfers have long flocked to Florida to experience some of the best golf courses in America. But with the pandemic still looming, more travelers are opting for less crowded, more under-the-radar escapes. Enter Martin County.

The charming destination can be found along South Florida’s Treasure Coast region, conveniently situated between Orlando to the northwest and Miami to the south. What sets Martin County apart from its well-known neighbors is its hidden gem appeal, marked by more than 22 miles of uncrowded beaches and over 100,000 sprawling acres of parks and conservation lands.

This beloved stretch of the Sunshine State is blessed with a natural sand ridge that stands out alongside the Treasure Coast’s typically flat terrain, resulting in amazing golf courses set against picturesque coastal landscapes.

Martin County is already known as a golfer’s dream destination, home to more than 35 worldclass courses and 15 private courses, boasting an impressive collection of affordable options created by notable designers like Jack Nicklaus, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Arnold Palmer, and both Tom and Jim Fazio.

Stuart’s highly-anticipated Sailfish Sands Golf Course will debut in 2021. The new attraction will replace the former Martin County Golf Course and promises to bring a new golfing experience to the lovers of this traditional sport. With a championship 18-hole course and one of the few reversible courses in the United States, Sailfish Sands is definitely out of the ordinary.

The course will be able to be played clockwise or counterclockwise on specific days and will

feature tee boxes that can accommodate golfers of any skill level. It will also offer a 13-acre driving range with low level lights for evening play and interactive LED targets. The reimagined space will also remain a stop along the Florida Historic Golf Trail.

For the full experience, stay and play at the Marriott Hutchinson Island Beach Resort, Golf & Marina. Situated on 200 acres overlooking the

Atlantic Ocean, the relaxing retreat offers a pristine 18-hole Ocean Hole Golf Course, where players can soak in the views while swinging by the sea. There’s a reason why more than 100 professional golfers call Martin County home, making it a favorite for pro athletes and amateurs alike. So, the next time you’re searching for a laid-back, golf-themed getaway, set your sights on Martin County – you’re bound to be impressed.
