A mainstay off the beaten path

ravel along U.S. 127 and you’ll find yourself in the bustling college town of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Food stops, apartment complexes, and lodging line each side of the four-lane road, offering countless options for Central Michigan University students, area residents, and visitors alike. And, just a few streets west, lies the true heart of the city. Established more than 100 years ago,

downtown Mt. Pleasant has stood as a quiet yet welcoming destination, evidenced by quaint streets dotted with locally owned restaurants and coffee shops, boutiques, salons, and more. A FRENZY OF LOCAL FARE

and Grill, downtown’s food variety will make your mouth water. “We’ve made a conscious effort to support our established small businesses and bring in new ones,” said Jim Holton, owner of four area restaurants, including Mountain Town Station Restaurant & Brew Pub and Camille’s Prime. “Our downtown has managed to stay relevant in an age when there’s greater availability to shop at bigger stores.” Holton knows the importance of relevancy. 1884, nearly 30 years ago. Today, it serves lunch, dinner, and its own craft brews to local leaders, businesspeople, college students, and hungry families. The eclectic restaurant mix speaks to downtown’s emphasis on creating one-of-a-kind experiences for patrons. Visitors can fuel up with renowned waffles at Ponder Coffee Company or heavenly crêpes from Pleasant City Coffee. and Soda Shop, with its old-fashioned lunch counter and daily suggestions noted on Facebook. Jib Bob Korean Restaurant offers authentic Korean dishes and a one-of-a-kind dining experience, while Pisasenllo’s Pizza buffet satisfies the most ravenous customers. A SERIES OF SHOPS AND SEASONAL HAPPENINGS

Visitors can peruse locally owned shops that appease a variety of interests. For the art enthusiast, art shops—including those where you’ll

be the artist, such as Art Reach of Mid Michigan, offer many ways to get creative. Get lost in a good read at Sleepy Dog Books and pick up a new outfit or home décor from Trillium, Norm’s Flower Petal, or Gray’s Furniture & Boutique. And of course, CMU and Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort offer a nearby mix of music, theater, and athletic attractions. For area residents like Mark Smith, general manager and third-generation co-owner of Krapohl Ford & Lincoln, the only locally owned full-service

dealership in town, it’s the small businesses that make Mt. Pleasant uniquely its own. “While we have the convenience of big-box stores and chain restaurants, the locally owned places give Mt. Pleasant its distinctive vibe,” Smith said. Year round, businesses come together to participate in larger events for all.
