Winterful Wonder D E C E M B E R 2 0 2 0 / J A N U A R Y 2 0 21

“Tell me again, Grandma,” he said curled in my lap,

“I want to dream about winter when I’m down for my nap.” “Winter in Michigan can start in November,

No need to wait for the twenty-first of December.

The leaves are off the trees, most song birds are gone too, They’ll all come back in spring, that’s just the way that they do. But some trees remain green, like the spruce and white pine, Making homes for the cardinals, handling winter just fine. You won’t see geese or ducks, or hear them honk or quack, Even loons are gone in winter, but next spring they’ll all be back. In winter it’s quiet, like your nap time, dear child, Here’s your blanket, and your teddy, now rest for a while.” “Tell me again, Grandma,” he said curled in my lap, “I want to dream about winter when I’m down for my nap.” “Winter in Michigan is all dressed up in white, Like frosting on a cupcake, it oozes with delight. From the bottom of the mitt to way past the Soo, There’s sledding and skating and tobogganing, too. You can travel cross country, on skis just for fun, Ski fast down the slopes, or you can take the bunny run. Ice hockey abounds and snow shoes are the fashion, And there’s even ice sculpting, if art is your passion. After all that activity, you should nap, my dear child, Here’s your blanket, and your teddy, now rest for a while.”

“Tell me again, Grandma,” he said curled in my lap, “I want to dream about winter when I’m down for my nap.” “Winter in Michigan means you can slow down a bit, Relax by the fireplace and drink hot chocolate. There’s grandma’s beef stew and bubbling chicken potpies, Comfy quilts on the bed and views of starry night skies. There are snowmen to build with orange carrot noses, Mittens on your hands and boots on your toeses, Icicles that sparkle and lots of snowballs to throw, All of this fun can be yours in the Michigan snow. My story is over, into bed now, dear child, Here’s your blanket, and your teddy, now rest for a while.” “Tell me again, Grandma,” he said curled in his bed. As he drifted off to sleep, I bent and kissed his sweet head. Joyce B. Wilcox // Writer’s Quest

From the General Manager

T GREG BABBITT General Manager gbabbitt@clpoc.org

his is my time of year to be thankful and reflect on the past season. Even with this crazy year dealing with Covid-19 and politics, among other things, it is important to reflect and be thankful and of course remain positive. This may be more difficult for some than others. This is where living in a great community is helpful. Many members are always willing to help other members. This is a great benefit in keeping the community united. This has been a stressful time for staff as well, attempting to enforce the ever-changing restrictions, keeping some amenities closed and then developing a plan for them to re-open, keeping members and employees safe, etc. In my opinion, during this high stress season staff has done an excellent job in keeping everyone safe. During these challenging times as decisions were made, we received complaints and were criticized by some, even challenged by some, but staff still assisted members as best they could. I am truly grateful for the staff I have and enjoyed watching them rise to the challenge of this season. It appears we will continue to have some difficult times ahead of us. Things have only intensified during the pandemic, which has been combined with the national backdrop of the most rancorous political season anyone can remember. We will continue to address any challenges, keeping members' and staff ’s health and safety paramount. I realize that some decisions made may be more controversial than others, but I also know we are all in this together. With the help of each of you we can all continue to work together for another successful year. SEASONAL RECAP This past season, even though we got a late start, we still saw significant increased activity at both the Highlands and Pines golf courses as well as the outdoor pool. This was somewhat expected as the greens fees at these courses and the pool fees are now inclusive with the membership fee. Even the restaurant with a late start and 50% capacity requirement still had a great season. I want to thank all members for your support of these amenities as well as the other amenities once we were allowed to make them available.

OFF-SEASON As winter approaches, we will be operating the tubing tow at the Highland Haus on weekends, when the hill conditions permit. We also offer members the ability to book your own private tubing party. Also, do not forget during the tubing tow operation we offer hot chocolate, popcorn, snacks, and a warm firepit. Staff will also be maintaining a great ice-skating rink again this year at the Highland Haus and the cross-country ski trail on the Highlands golf course. Stay tuned to the Members Bulletin and our website for the latest updates on all our wintertime activities. FINANCE We are currently in the process of preparing next fiscal year’s budget, FY 2021. With this budget comes establishing the 2021 Rates and Fees Schedule. The Board is in the process of preparing this schedule and will be voting on it at their December 19 meeting. The Board and management are cognizant of the current economic conditions while at the same time trying to balance expenses for services against income. The proposed schedule is available online and I encourage each of you T h e C a n ad i a n L a ke r

to review this schedule on the website at clpoc.org or call the office at 231-972-7651 to have a copy mailed or faxed. THANKFUL I want to personally thank the many volunteers for your service to Canadian Lakes. I keep saying that volunteerism is in fact priceless, and Canadian Lakes is very fortunate to have such an amazing group of volunteers who continue to willingly provide their time and talents. I am very thankful for my devoted and hard-working staff of employees and my department heads, Casey Smith, Kim Dowell, Jessica Slendak, Dennis Wolfe, Bill Hull, Rob Mickey, Shayna Hancock, and Kyle Perrault. Their efforts in keeping this community at its best are appreciated. As in every year during this holiday time, my staff joins me in wishing each and every one of you a joyous holiday season and a very happy and healthy New Year!

his year has certainly turned out to be one that will not soon be forgotten. COVID -19 restrictions have played havoc with all our amenities and how we socialize with friends and family. Constantly changing rules and compliance dates also have not made it any easier. We have endured unprecedented changes not only in our daily lives but in life here at Canadian Lakes. We have seen lockdowns nationally, statewide, and even regionally, and we have persevered. With the unbeatable spirit of America, we will overcome this virus. We the members of Canadian Lakes have not let it defeat us, and because we have stood strong in support of each other we are winning! Through all the many transformations of this pandemic, we still have many bright spots we can point to.

• While we were unable to begin our golf season until May, numbers have shown that The Pines and The Highlands achieved huge growth in rounds. The Royal has also maintained an extraordinarily strong presence. • Golf revenue has remained as strong as it has been in recent years. • The outdoor pool was open the majority of the summer and even past the normal Labor Day closing. • While the indoor pool has had to remain closed, we are preparing for its opening with a brand new liner. • The lakes were busy on a daily basis, with no seeming decline in usage. • Next season we will also see an exciting refurbishment of our main beaches. • The restaurant has in spite of the pandemic experienced another strong year. • Home sales have been at record levels, housing starts are up, and lots are once again starting to move. • Because of the great support of our members our local businesses have remained open while many throughout the state have had to close. • We are in a strong financial position, due in part to the solid financial plan which was resoundingly approved by the membership last year. • As a result of the strength of the financial plan we will enter next year poised for a minimal increase and maintenance of existing services and an ability for growth. • Even with the financial challenges of this pandemic we find that delinquencies are down as are defaults. Delinquency recoveries have remained successful. We all look forward to a full return to normalcy next year. As we go forward, we will continue to exemplify not only the spirit of success of America, but the strength and mutual support which made and continue to make Canadian Lakes “THE GOOD LIFE.” As if COVID was not enough, midyear two Directors and Executive Committee members sold their homes and moved permanently out of state. These two vacancies caused a change in three of the Executive Committee positions. The Vice President was elected to the office of

T h e C a n ad i a n L a ke r

President which meant that the office of Vice President and Secretary still needed to be filled. Why bring this up now? Typically, this is something that we do per the Articles of Incorporation at the beginning of the year, when the four executive positions are filled. In the middle of the year, and under these pandemic conditions, we had Directors step up to the challenge. I believe it is important for the membership to have some background of the individuals that the Board of Directors has chosen as their leadership team. For this edition of the Canadian Laker I asked all the Executive Committee members to write an article introducing themselves and provide some background information. These individuals stepped up without much advance notice to accept the challenge. It is an honor to be acknowledged by their peers for their experience, qualifications, and abilities for these leadership positions. I graciously thank my fellow Directors in supporting the individuals that they have chosen, and the Directors who stepped up to fill these positions. I thank them for the outstanding job they have done throughout the second half of this year. With the recent surge of reported cases of the COVID-19 virus, I would recommend that everyone still practice safe social distancing guidelines. Let us never forget all that our dedicated staff are doing to keep this the vibrant, wellrun and maintained community that we all bought here to enjoy. They work tirelessly to provide the membership the experience they have come to enjoy, even under the constantly changing guidelines we are under with this pandemic. I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.

Get To Know

PAUL SZYMKOWICZ

JOHN COLLEY

MY NAME IS Paul Szymkowicz and I am completing my fourth year as a Director of the CLPOC. For the last six months I have held the office of President. In 2019 and for the first six months of 2020, I held the office of Vice President. It has been my privilege to serve on the CLPOC Board of Directors. I have been a member of Canadian Lakes for the past 50 years. These years have brought me knowledge and insight as to our community, and I have benefitted from that. I have enjoyed being a Canadian Lakes property owner, and purchased a home here in 1991. I was nine years old when my parents purchased property here. I find it amazing when I think back to those days and can fully realize what our community has turned into today. I am still in the workforce and have been employed with the same company for 38 years. Through my hard work and dedication, I have accepted a partnership and am a stockholder within this company. I believe that still being active in the workforce gives an individual a slightly different perspective. I believe it gives one the ability to understand what was required 20-30 years ago and what is required today to run a successful business. I have two years left in my second term as a Director and look forward to serving our community to the best of my ability. I would like to thank all my fellow Directors past and present for all their support throughout my years on the board. We have such a wonderful group of people in our community. To our volunteers, General Manager, staff, and employees - a sincere thank you for all that you do. Our community would not be what it has become today without your support and dedication.

HELLO, MY NAME is John Colley and I currently serve as the Vice President of the Executive Committee for the CLPOC Board of Directors. I have been a Board member for the past four years. I have been a resident of Canadian Lakes for the past six years and also reside in Georgetown, Texas. I was born and raised in Livonia, Michigan. I hold degrees from Lawrence Tech and the University of Michigan (Go Blue) and have worked in the construction industry for the past 40 years. My wife, Kathy, and I have two married children, Amanda (Erik), and Jonathon (Carly). As a family, we have thoroughly enjoyed our time here and fully experiencing “the Good Life.” Whether playing golf, boating, hiking, or just sitting around the house with friends, it is a welcome respite from everyday life. Canadian Lakes, as you all are aware, is a special community, providing a resort-style way of life in a fantastic setting. Maintaining, growing, and enhancing the community is a priority that I believe will ensure its future. I am proud to be associated with the other board members and community volunteers who work so diligently to make Canadian Lakes what it is. Creating, maintaining, and furthering the value of being a member is the primary goal of our organization. The Board, in conjunction with the strong leadership of our General Manager and the hard work of his staff, will guarantee our collective futures in this ‘little slice of heaven’.

The CLPOC Executive Committee

JAMES FRENCH

JIM SWARTZENDRUBER

MY NAME IS James French and I have been a CLPOC Board member for the past five years. I am also the corporation Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee. It is a great honor that my peers on the Board of Directors have given me the responsibility to lead that committee for the past four years. I’ve also served on the Architectural Control and Strategic Planning Committees. My wife Carol and I purchased a lot in 1979 and built our cottage the following spring. We spent many wonderful weekends both during the summer and winter experiencing Canadian Lakes along with our two daughters, Kristin and Kimberly. We moved from Rochester Hills in 2012 to become Canadian Lakes residents. This has been a very special place for our entire family that has allowed us to also have many wonderful times with our grandchildren. During my tenure on the Board and Executive Committee there have been many challenges. A major goal was to put a stable funding plan in place that is now in its first year. I am very fortunate to have members participate in the Finance Committee that put together what promises to achieve that funding goal. It is a fact that experiencing life at Canadian Lakes is something very special for me and my family. It has always been a place where we could relax and feel a sense of belonging. I would like to thank so many members for all the support given to me and the volunteers on the Board and committees.

HELLO, I’M Jim Swartzendruber, your Board of Directors Secretary for the remainder of this year. We will again go through the officer selection process during January’s first meeting. It has been one of my greatest pleasures to serve the membership of our great community for the last several years. These years have brought me a distinct appreciation for the Board and the membership in what they represent for the CLPOC community. My wife Susan and I have owned our home since 2012 and now live here full time. We sit and pinch ourselves because we can’t believe that we are a part of a dream come true lifestyle, the lifestyle that Canadian Lakes brings you as a property owner. We are so thankful for all the residents and what they all do to make our home so special. We thank everyone for making our life a blessing each day. I look forward to serving our members in the future in some way and thank all of you for making this the Good Life.

I

n the last publication of your Canadian Laker, I gave readers a quick rundown of what the 2020 advertising season looked like. We stayed the course from previous years by placing our normal radio buys and stuck with display advertising across many different websites on the internet. This year, I added television to our media mix. My, what an amazing season it has been for advertising! It’s actually a bit impossible to base anything on this year because what better time to be on radio and on the internet when people were home and not doing much of anything. Consumers had a lot of time on their hands to hear and see our message and the number of inquiries we had this year proves it! We had more than double the inquiries from the previous year. 2020 turned out well for Canadian Lakes despite COVID-19. So that brings us to those inquiries and my words in my last article that said I was excited to share what’s coming in 2021 to the marketing department. I also said that I had to get my head wrapped fully around the possibilities and capabilities to be able to tell you all about it. Allow me to be honest and tell you that although I’m not fully there, I’m still going to tell you what I do know and what my goals are. I’ve been asked so many times over the past five years I’ve been Marketing Director here, “what’s our return on investment?” My goodness – that’s a loaded question! Members have wanted to know how many people have bought a house or lot here from the radio ads I’ve placed or the billboards that have gone up. Sometimes the question is very vague but sometimes it’s very specific like, “You spent $80,000 at the ballpark. How many people saw our sign and came here and bought property?” First, please understand that neither I nor the Corporation sells property. It’s important to understand that all of our advertising currently is branding. We’re not Coca-Cola. or Ford. I don’t have a tangible item in my hand to sell for 25% off today. Our advertising is different. We are selling the sizzle (of Canadian Lakes) - not the steak. I report how many inquiries we get from our advertising and marketing – all those people who hear or see our message that tells them to visit our website for more information and then like what they see so much that they share their contact information to get the full scoop. These interested parties then receive a welcome email full of all the cool things about Canadian Lakes, annual fee, inclusive amenities, rules, articles of incorporation, map, brochure – all the good stuff. Generally, the inquiry and I go back and forth as they always have questions to familiarize themselves with us. Some get referred to a realtor, some come and visit and I or a community volunteer show them around or they even choose to venture out themselves. I’d print off the inquiry notification that would automatically be emailed to me and file that into the three-ring binder based on the month received. But truly, after the exchange of emails, possibly a visit, and our filing system, the visitor for the most part would disappear from there. I will say there have been a handful of times a new member would cross my path and I would remember their names, or they stop in to

T h e C a n ad i a n L a ke r

say, “Remember me? You showed me around!” We have never had a real concrete way to track and cultivate inquiries – until now! I’m super excited to tell members that the marketing department now has the Salesforce platform. Salesforce is a software program that provides customer relationship management for both external and internal practices. Salesforce also has other apps that can be added to complete and enhance the process. Now, when people share their contact information with us on our website or through social media and our email marketing because they are interested in Canadian Lakes, because we also purchased additional applications that tie this all together, their information gets sent to Salesforce where we can now cultivate and connect with them automatically until they either choose not to buy here or become property owners. The time will come soon when Salesforce will tell me, “Hey Jessica! Susan and Mark Morgan from Hudsonville, Michigan, who was a lead that inquired on September 14, 2017 from WZZM TV, are now property owners at 1234 West Royal.” That’s just the start of the power of what Salesforce can do and how it can help us connect not only externally but also internally with our current members. Lindsay and I are still training on this software. The last time I used Salesforce was about 20 years ago and basically that means nothing now. It’s completely different now. I’m told that training truly never stops, and one is always learning. I’m happy that I will be able to tell members what our advertising dollars are bringing us. I plan to bring you more stats and updates throughout 2021 with the help of Salesforce as Lindsay and I gain more knowledge through training. Watch for sidebars in the Marketing articles. Also, watch for a refreshed look to your Canadian Laker. It’s going to look prettier on your coffee table! In closing – it’s my favorite time of the year. It’s Christmas! May the

wonder, hope, love and all the blessings fill the hearts of you and yours during this glorious time of the year. Remember the reason for the season and be sure to show love to those who are most important in your lives. I lost my mother a month and a half ago, so this Christmas will be tough for my family. Therefore, I remind you to love your family a little harder this Christmas. I love you, Mom

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. every Friday and Saturday beginning November 27 through December 26 including Christmas Eve, Century 21 White House Realty presents Nights of Lights at the Castle in Canadian Lakes, Michigan featuring over 100,000 LED lights. Although this year is quite different from the past two years, Canadian Lakes along with Century 21 White House Realty was determined to not allow COVID-19 to completely stifle Nights of Lights this year. In the past, visitors to Canadian Lakes enjoyed walks on the Castle patio, giving them a 360-degree view of the lights, interactive music shows, a food vendor and a hot cocoa bar. However, due to lack of personnel to enforce covid-19 restrictions, these event elements simply cannot happen this year. This didn’t stop the determi-

Canadian Lakes Safety

W

e are making preparations to enter our winter season. It has most certainly been an interesting year to say the least. Thank you all for your patience as we make our way through some extraordinary times. Since the cold months are here, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of our winter procedures and remind you all of some rules/deed restrictions that come into play now.

ROB MICKEY Safety Department Director rmickey@clpoc.org

Winter Watch/Red Light Program Members who choose to participate in this program purchase a “winter watchman” box that plugs into a standard outlet, then is connected via extension cord to a red light bulb and placed in a visible window. These are available at Ace Hardware here in Canadian Lakes. If the temperature falls below the desired setting in the house, the red light comes on to alert somebody that there may be a problem with the furnace, etc. We have a list of people who participate in this program, and this list is generated by the homeowner coming in to the CLPOC office EACH YEAR to register — your registration does not carry over between years. If something goes wrong, in the vast majority of red-light activations it is an improper setting as the winter watchman boxes and their temperature dials are not an exact science. The following may provide those with a box some valuable information: I have found that generally a setting around 15 degrees below your usual winter thermostat setting is adequate, leaning more towards the 30-40 degree range. Again, it is not an exact science, but this may help alleviate some false activations. Rest assured both our Safety officers and our dedicated Mobile Watch volunteers are always on the lookout to help keep your house safe. Please feel free to give us a call with any questions you may have. Vehicle Parking There is absolutely NO overnight and/or long-term parking allowed within street medians in Canadian Lakes. People have been utilizing these areas for overflow parking, etc. There have been several issues over the past few years within our development, particularly along Belle Isle. This is a safety hazard to not only other motorists, but also to the vehicle owner. It also causes problems with our plowing and snow removal process. Trailers and RVs These are not approved to be kept on your property in Canadian Lakes. These vehicles include utility trailers, boats/boat trailers, campers and motorhomes. Please make sure you have an approved location for winter storage if need be. Thank you again for your patience, understanding and cooperation. I realize things have not been easy for any of us during this past year. In closing, I ask you to please be kind and do your part to help keep Canadian Lakes healthy by wearing a mask and maintaining social distancing as you are out and about in our buildings and properties. This only works if we pull together as a community and make it happen!

From the CLA

E BY EARL CHRISTIANSON President 313-204-0877 eande751@sbcglobal.net

laine and I hope you all had a very nice Thanksgiving. We also want to wish you a Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy, and peaceful New Year. What 2021 has in store for us as citizens of the United States, or as members of Canadian Lakes, can’t be predicted, and there is no way I can tell you what the Canadian Lakes Association will be able to provide in the upcoming year. For one, I don’t have a crystal ball. But secondly, it will be up to the new CLA President and his Board to provide this information to you. And speaking of the CLA Board, in case you have not heard or read, I am pleased to list the CLA Board Members for 2021. Some members are new, and the others are continuing on with their term as Board members. Congratulations and thank you all for volunteering your time to serve our community. I know you will do an excellent job.

OFFICERS: Harold Wolf President Peggy Brohl Vice President Sharon Schmidt Secretary & Medical Supplies Alice Brandt Treasurer DIRECTORS: Robin Bielby Food Service & Volunteers Lori Gorecki Communications

Jo Alex Membership Mike Burke Purchasing & Medical Supplies Marsha Wolf Lite Lines Editor & Social Activities Maggie Richardson Assistant Social Activities Tom Gawenda Sanctioned Clubs, Medical Supplies & Buy-A-Brick Lace Polluch Assistant Board Member

Since I can’t give you a definite listing of next year’s events, what I will do is make this last article as President of the CLA my “thank you” note. It’s hard to believe, but I have served on the CLA Board of Directors for seven years and five years as President. Now it’s time for me to hand over my gavel. This has been a very rewarding and enjoyable time for me, and it has been my honor to serve the Canadian Lakes Association and the Canadian Lakes community. As I said once before, I hope I have given as much as I have received. There is much that I want to say, so I will do my best to keep it in an organized flow, unlike some of my Lite Lines articles where I ramble on! First, I want to say, when Elaine and I joined the CLA as property owners, we did not realize the significance of the Canadian Lakes Association. As we learned the history of the CLA and began volunteering at events, we discovered that this was much more than a group of people who put on a party once in awhile. As Canadian Lakes Association Board members, we recognized the value that the CLA brings to Canadian Lakes. We discovered that one of the reasons people move to Canadian Lakes and stay in Canadian Lakes is because of the CLA. This is not just a place to live, Canadian Lakers are a family. The sanctioned clubs, the social and educational events, the Membership Directory, 22

T h e C a n ad i a n L a ke r

and the Lite Lines all help to unite us. You have read and been told that the CLA started in 1975 as the “Year Arounders Club.” This small group of people wanted to make life even better in Canadian Lakes by providing social activities and clubs. In 1980, our Articles of Incorporation were filed with the state of Michigan and the Canadian Lakes Association was born. The CLA played a major part in the development of the Canadian Lakes Property Owners Corporation (CLPOC) when the Canadian Lakes Development Corporation turned over ownership of the community to all Canadian Lakes property owners. Since the inception of the CLA, there have been many CLA members who have volunteered to serve on the CLA Board of Directors, and they have provided a wide variety of events for this community. The Board and I truly wanted to have a 40th anniversary party for all CLA members this year and enjoy a well-earned celebration. However, Covid-19 put a stop to that as well as most of our events for 2020. But what I can do is acknowledge and pay tribute to all the people who served on the CLA Board over the years. Each of us who has enjoyed a Summer Picnic, a Winter Carnival, participating in a club, making use of the Directory, or reading the Lite Lines owes a “thank you” to all these people. Included in this article is a listing of all those who have served on the CLA Board of Directors since 1980. This is an impressive list of volunteers who stepped up to serve their community. My time on the Board has been a gift and I have met an incredible number of great people. I wish I could thank each of them/you individually, but it would be impossible. So, let me say “thank you” this way. Thank You: • To all the local businesses who have been supportive of the CLA in the way of donations, discounts on products or promoting us to your clients or patrons.

• To all the CLPOC members who have attended our events even though you are not a CLA member. If you and your family have participated in all that we provide, consider filling out a CLA Membership Form and joining us. I know you realize that for $25 per year, per family, it is a great investment. • To the CLPOC Board of Directors, CLPOC General Manager Greg Babbitt and his staff for all the support that they have given me and the CLA. • To Rob Mickey and the CL Safety Department and to Roger Stobert and his Mobile Watch for directing traffic and keeping everyone safe at our large events. • To Dennis Wolfe for his support and participation during our Winter Carnivals. • To Casey Smith, Bill Hull and your staff for moving and hauling tables and chairs to set up and clean up for our many events. And especially to Connie Day who always had my back to make sure that I did not forget anything. • To all the CLA members who have supported us by joining and/or renewing their membership, volunteering to work at our events, and for sharing some of your ideas and suggestions with me. You are all the best. • To Elaine for many things such as: being Editor of the Lite Lines for over five years; for proofing my articles in The Canadian Laker and the Lite Lines and removing anything that might not be exactly “presidential” or “proper,” for letting me bounce about 963,271 various ideas off of her, forgiving me when I used to wake her up in the middle of the night before a large event wondering if everything was ready, and for those very few times over the last five years when things might not have gone exactly as planned and I might have spouted off a bit. Hard to believe that of me, right? • To John Loy (six years) our Treasurer and Bill Kerwin (four years) our Directory Ad salesperson. John and Bill will be leaving the Board this year after serving their terms of office. Both

have served the CLA and their community well and they will be missed. • To Liz Dean for asking me to join the CLA Board seven years ago and having the confidence in me to head up the CLA. • To all members of the CLA Board of Directors, both current and past, whom I have had the pleasure of working with. From the bottom of my heart, it has been an honor and a privilege being on the Board with all of you. We have not always agreed on some issues, but that’s how it should be on a Board. That’s how we provided the best we could for this community. People have told me that I have done a good job as President, but the truth is that all of you have done a good job, and you have graciously let me come along for the ride. Whether or not you realize it, each and every one of you has taught me something different that I will always carry with me. You will all be a great asset to your new President. But don’t forget guys – raise your hand when you want to speak at the Board meetings like you were taught!!! And finally, to Harold Wolf, the new CLA President and the new CLA Board members – have fun. This is a great responsibility you have taken on, but it will truly be one of the best times in your life. What you provide for the members of our community will be fulfilling and gratifying to you, but more importantly, it is needed and appreciated by our CLA members and the Canadian Lakes community. A former CLPOC Board member once told me during my first year as President, “Earl, I don’t think you totally realize the importance of the CLA to Canadian Lakes yet.” And she was correct. I didn’t, but now I do. So that’s it. Can you believe it? Under 100,000 words! Stay healthy everyone and Elaine and I will see you at the CLA events. Can I have an Amen? My best to you all, Earl

Score Posting Guidelines for November through March Cold climate golfers are now in the inactive season regarding score postings. Scores produced after November 1 in Michigan are not valid for posting. Warm climate golfers (south of the Mason/Dixon Line) remain in an active season environment and are required to post scores. All players need to remember that they are subject to peer review. Your peers know if you are playing and they also know if you are posting. The USGA provides full details on what are acceptable scores for posting purposes. This can be found online at usga.org under the handicapping section.

Annual Big Fish Contest Results

Grant Jagacki holding his winning pike.

Canadian Lakes Fishing Club is pleased to announce the winners of the Annual Fishing Contest, with thanks to all who entered. There were two Largest Fish trophies awarded, with both going to our young entrants. Grant Jagacki, age 14, won for the largest pike and Anthony Smith, age 6, for the largest perch. Six other trophies were given to young anglers for catching a fish of any size. Remember that the next contest runs from October 1, 2020, to September 30, 2021. The entry blanks consist of one entry form for both. If the entry is a young angler the information for the angler must be filled in as to age, etc. All entries will be eligible for the Largest Fish Contest if the minimum length is met. The NEW entry forms will be available on the web site, members. canadianlakes.org and at the CLPOC office soon. PLEASE make sure the form used is for the current year, 2020 to 2021. In the meantime, keep track of your catches so you can enter them by October 10, 2021. Good luck on your fishing trips and remember, “That’s why it’s called fishin and not catchin.” (in memory of Jim Hilton)

Ice Safety

Below are some common safety tips to remember before venturing out onto any frozen lake or pond: 1. Check the ice thickness with a spud or auger. Be aware that snow or slush can hide thin areas. 2. Do not go out alone. Also, carry a rope and ice spikes.

17th Annual Youth Ice Fishing Derby Saturday, February 13, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. Bring the kids for a fun time ice fishing, whether they have done it before or not. No registration needed, just show up. Fishing rods, bait, holes, shelters, underwater video, fish finders, bonfire, hot chocolate, and donuts provided free. CL Fishing Club members will give instruction and assistance in catching fish. In past years, kids have caught hundreds of bluegill and perch, plus several pike. Location is on the Main Lake, just south of Buchanan, off West Royal, with parking alongside the pickleball courts. We will also have a free raffle for the kids with over a dozen great prizes at 10:30 a.m. Adults are welcome to come and learn the techniques. Mask and distancing requirements TBA. Questions, call Dale Doepker, dtroutman97@aol.com, 972-8663.

3. Take a cell phone to call 911 for help for yourself or others. 4. To help someone who falls through, do not go near the hole, but use a rope or long object to help them. 5. If you make a large hole for ice fishing, insert a tree branch to mark it before leaving.

A CONVERSATION WITH ROYAL GRILLE CHEF KYLE PERRAULT BY FRAN VOCI

to produce juicy turkey meat. It will also be the base for your gravy. Roast the turkey under a foil tent until close to the end when you remove the foil to brown it. Follow roasting instructions found on the turkey packaging. How do you know when it is done? A Dark meat cooks slower than the white meat. When the leg and thigh are very loose, easily separating, there should be no evidence of blood, then the turkey is done. Important – let the turkey rest on a platter or tray for a half hour under foil to allow the meat juices to settle in the meat.

Q

Side dishes are an important part of any turkey dinner. Thank you for sharing your family recipe for stuffing. Do you have a preference for the potato variety that makes the best mashed potatoes? Do you have other ideas for vegetables beyond the traditional green beans? A Yukon Gold potatoes make the best mashed potatoes. They have a naturally buttery flavor. Other than the familiar green beans and green bean casserole, squash is another traditional side dish; peas with mushrooms and onions are another option. Kyle likes to do peas with grape tomatoes in a balsamic reduction. With the wide variety of produce available in our stores now, there are limitless options. In addition to Kyle’s stuffing recipe, he also shared a cheese ball recipe and a pumpkin cheesecake recipe. The easy cheesecake is very light, and lightly sweet. Even pumpkin skeptics will enjoy it. Thank you, Chef Kyle for sharing your recipes and knowledge with us. The Royal Grille staff has done a great job of providing great food and great service throughout this very challenging year. We are looking forward to enjoying very good food at the Royal Grille in 2021.

Q

D

ID YOU SEE the notice this fall that our Royal Grille was offering 50 complete Thanksgiving dinners for take out on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving? These meals have gotten rave reviews for the last two years. Frankly, I found the thought of preparing 50 dinners for delivery on a single day mind boggling. Kyle must know a whole lot about making a turkey dinner, and I asked him to share his knowledge and tips with us. Part of the secret is that the Royal Grille kitchen has a lot of oven space, so many turkeys can be roasted at the same time. Kyle says it is an intense two days before delivery day. But there were other questions that I had and perhaps you have them too.

There are so many different kinds of turkeys in the stores, do you have a preference? A Any turkey will give you a good result if it is well prepared and basted frequently. Don’t feel you have to buy a brand name.

Q

How do you prepare the turkey? Should we salt the cavity, salt the outside, stuff it? A Put an apple and an onion in the cavity, do not salt cavity or stuff it. Put 3-4 cups of seasoned water in the roasting pan. Season the water with whatever poultry seasoning products you prefer, a little butter can be added, and some paprika for color. This becomes your basting liquid and the moisture

BURGLARS WOULD RATHER YOU DIDN’T KNOW OR DO BY ROGER STOBERT

Mobile Watch Needs YOU! Mobile Watch can fulfill its mission only with your support and participation. While we have many volunteers, there are still areas that need additional patrollers. If you can help, please understand that the commitment is small. It only takes about an hour per week. If you are interested in becoming a patroller, even if only part time, please contact Roger Stobert, Mobile Watch Coordinator, at 231-972-1232 or at spankky@charter.net, or just call Canadian Lakes Safety at 231-972-8555.

CANADIAN LAKES HAS BEEN most fortunate at having very few home invasions, but break-ins do occur. Whether you are planning a winter get-away, going on a short romp in the sun come spring, or making a quick dash to Hixson’s or Ace, please consider these helpful suggestions before you leave home. 1 If a burglar can hear your radio, chances are very good that he/she will think someone’s home. Consider keeping a radio on a timer to come on and off at preset times. Make sure the radio can be heard outside of the front door. (Don’t use a digital radios unless you are sure that it won’t lose its setting if the power goes out. Replacing clearly heard music and talk with a staticky station won’t fool anyone). 2 An alternative to leaving a radio on while you’re on vacation is to use a device that simulates the flickering lights of a TV. The product is called a Fake TV Burglar Deterrent Television Simulator. It is available on Amazon as well as other online merchants. The unit sells for around $40. One resident in Royal South swears by this device. 3 If your get-away is only for a short period of time, a real barking dog really does deter break-ins. There are also motion-activated devices that provide a recorded sound of a barking dog; however, reviews of such units are mixed. Again, this electronic “tool” is available online. Consider installing an alarm 4 system that will notify you by phone when something is wrong at your house. If you get such a message on your cell, call Canadian Lakes Safety (231-972-8555) immediately. T h e C a n ad i a n L a ke r

Depending on the situation, also call the Mecosta County Sheriff ’s Office (231-972-0150). Be prepared by having the Canadian Lakes Safety and Mecosta County Sheriff ’s Office in your cell phone’s contact list. You may also want to consider an alarm that makes a loud noise outside your house. Loud noises outside the house alert neighbors and frighten burglars. (Be sure Safety has a key to your house and directions on how to disable and then reset the alarm. This can be done by filling out a Resident Vacation Form that can be obtained at the CLPOC office or on the CLPOC website, members.canadianlakes.org). 6 Consider putting lights on timers to give the appearance you are home. Overlap the times lights come on and go off so that you don’t have short periods in which the house is plunged into total darkness. Some burglars are career crim7 inals. They work hard at their craft to blend in with the surroundings. Professional thieves may present themselves as clean-cut service workers. They may even wear work uniforms with some going to the extent of wearing fake logos on their jackets or shirts. Some seasoned home invaders may drive newer vehicles with expensive utility trailers. (Often times it is difficult to know if the workers are loading or unloading merchandise). Others may want to present themselves as the typical day laborer. Thieves looking just like that stole cords of wood in Canadian Lakes. If your house is seasonally occupied or used only on an occasional weekend, alert your closest year-round neighbor of the activities at your home. Ask your neighbors to call Canadian Lakes Safety to report activities at your home

that they haven’t been apprised of. Tell your neighbors not to be concerned with “calling the cops” on what may be an innocent vendor or provider. Legitimate business people or workers will never be offended if Safety asks to see their identification and/or work orders. 8 Burglars don’t mind taking the entire safe with them if they’re too impatient to figure out how to crack it. Bolt it down. 9 Never reveal your vacation or business trip plans on your Facebook page. Don’t assume your address can’t be found just because it’s not on your page. 10 No errand is too short to leave your garage door open. A burglar can invade your home and steal your valuables in a lot less time than it takes you to run to Hixson’s to buy a loaf of bread. Unless it is apparent that you are home, you can count on Mobile Watch to report to Canadian Lakes Safety that your garage door is open. Never hesitate to notify Canadian Lakes Safety (231-972-8555) if you intend to be away for a few days. Safety will notify the Mobile Watch of your absence so that they can be extra vigilant of your home while you’re away. Consider filling out a Residential Vacation Form (Red Light) which may be obtained at the CLPOC office or at members.canadianlakes.org, under Governing/Documents and Forms.

REFLECTIVE HOUSE NUMBER SIGNS COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE! MOBILE WATCH AND CANADIAN LAKES SAFETY are strong advocates of reflective house number signs. Many of our Canadian Lakes neighbors have them. Do you? Mobile Watch volunteers love the reflective signs because it makes their job of identifying your home easier should there be a need to report a red light, open garage doors, or suspicious person or vehicle(s). More importantly, however, is the fact that these signs can be lifesavers. Here’s an idea – go out on your own street, outside your home in the evening and see how hard it is to see your house numbers. Many people have beautiful homes with nice looking house numbers on them, but they often blend into the house. They look nice but may be hard to spot. The last thing you want is to delay emergency services because they can’t find your house in the dark. Nothing could be worse than having an emergency, calling for Canadian Lakes Safety, the police, fire department, or ambulance, only to have to wait as valuable minutes tick by while the responders search for your house address. A few minutes could mean the difference between a life and death, tragedy, or a positive outcome. Signs are inexpensive and can be obtained through the Morton Township Office or at our local ACE hardware store. Six-foot metal posts can also be purchased at ACE or at most home improvement stores. If you need help installing these signs, contact a Mobile Watch volunteer who will either install it for you or find someone who will. When installed, the signs should be near the road in front of your house and high enough so that plowed snow won’t obscure the numbers.

s Canadian Lakes Yard Waste Coordinator, I would like to say thank you to all the Yard Waste attendants for your service to Canadian Lakes in 2020. Your support helps ensure an important asset is available to all the Canadian Lakes residents which helps minimize the dumping of these wastes on neighbors’ lots and common areas. To the community at large, I would like to ask for your help in keeping this vital service fully operational. As with most volunteer groups, the Yard Waste Site experiences attrition of its attendants due to health, work responsibilities, family dynamics, and a host of other reasons. Consequently, we are always looking for additional members. If you can spare two hours a month on a Sunday or Wednesday from April through November, please consider volunteering as a Yard Waste attendant. The training is minimal, and the job involves no manual labor. Attendants report that they receive positive and immediate feedback from our grateful Canadian Lakes members. To all of the Yard Waste attendants, I wish to send to you my happy holiday greetings. May you and your families have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year! On behalf of the Yard Waste attendants, I would like to express to all Canadian Lakers our heartfelt wish for a very merry Christmas and happy and healthy New Year.

FROM A CANADIAN LAKES KITCHEN

Happy Holidays, Canadian Lakes

H

ello, my name is Billy Abbott, otherwise known as Chef Des Lacs, whom some of you may have heard of through the videos and recipes that my wife/sous chef, Keri, and I have posted on Facebook. We have also done several chef dinners throughout the lakes where we have been able to meet some wonderful people! I grew up in Michigan near the Hart/Silver Lake area until my family moved to Holland, Michigan. I eventually met my wonderful wife of 14 years while we were both working at Red Lobster, she as a bartender and I as a cook, of course. I got the cooking bug as a young boy making mini pizzas with my mom, wearing my own little white apron. Although I have taken several different career paths along the way, I always came back to cooking. Creating dishes and preparing them has become a passion for me. Along my culinary journey I have been fortunate enough to be part of the staff of some amazing restaurants including fine French dining at Toulouse in Saugatuck, Butch’s Dry Dock in the heart of downtown Holland, Boatwerks along the lakeshore, and now, Lakeview Alley Cat in Lakeview, Michigan. We made the move to Canadian Lakes as a fresh start after Keri’s battle with glioblastoma (a type of brain cancer). Even though most of our family live in the Holland area, the hustle and bustle of the ever-growing city was not ideal for us any longer. We had come up to Canadian Lakes several years ago just to check it out and this area, has continued to stay on our radar. When we found our house here it felt like it was meant to be. Keri and I tell ourselves all the time how lucky we are to have found Canadian Lakes and this wonderful community of friends! Having left our jobs and city life behind, we had to figure out what was next for us and that is when we came up with Chef Des Lacs. Inspired by all the fresh local farm and Amish produce and baked goods we decided to give it a go. Things had been going well, but unfortunately Covid-19 threw a wrench into things. I ended up finding a great chef job in Lakeview, and continue to look forward to what the future holds for Keri and me. We feel so blessed to be part of the Canadian Lakes community and so thankful for all the warm and friendly people we have met and worked with since we moved here almost a year and a half ago. As we all know the cold weather is here and that means the holidays are going to be upon us soon! So I thought it would be festive to share one of my recipes with everyone.

CLPOC Board Minutes how that about 50% of directors are selected into one of these positions and that this method could improve the number. That this would be helpful for director development and further the exchange of talents and ideas. Executive Committee selection process – Director Halpin also shared a process for the selection of Executive Committee membership that was not directly tied to the selection of officers. That this process would allow for directors to be placed on the executive committee to insure a well rounded education of the board and its activities. Christmas WRITE BEFORE

Christmas cards remained boxed on the table, There seemed to be no time to address, Each family member was busy, While also feeling they had been blessed. Christmas gifts stacked high in the spare room, Many presents still needing giftwraps, Now that Mom is done with her shopping, She makes bows when they’re down for their naps.

Christmas tree assembled in the tree stand, Many more trinkets still need their hooks, Dad works hard with all the untangling, Shaking his head when nobody looks.

Cross-stitch stockings still in the basket, Many more stiches yet to be made, Grandma will surely be kept busy, Long days ahead for her I’m afraid. Strings of lightbulbs still in the boxes, Many more lights to frame the front door, Grandpa will perform his porch magic, Lights aglow from the roof to the floor. Christmas cookies still in the oven, Many more batches yet to be baked, Grandchildren will help with the baking, Creations like theirs can’t be faked. Christmas cards unsigned on the table, All of them still needing an address, No one’s sure how to finish this project, Down to the wire, with all of this stress. Suddenly there comes a solution, Since they haven’t the time to extend, Christmas greetings on line are written, Then right before Christmas, they’ll push send Joyce B. Wilcox // Writer’s Quest
