Reunion Resort’s new clubhouse at the Signature Design Nicklaus Course Located only minutes from the gates of Orlando’s greatest attractions, Reunion, a Salamander Resort, has opened a stunning new clubhouse at its Signature Design Nicklaus Course. Found on over three acres, the new 12,000 square-foot clubhouse features panoramic views of the course and includes a state-of-the-art fitness center, men’s and women’s locker rooms and showers, a golf lifestyle retail space, an event lawn for group functions and special events, and an upscale sports bar called “Traditions,” complete with an open kitchen and outdoor terrace with views of the 18th green. A tribute to Jack Nicklaus’ masterful layout, the new clubhouse includes furnishings, artwork and

memorabilia related to Nicklaus’ decorated career. “We are confident that every member and guest will enjoy this distinctive golf experience,” says Reunion Resort’s General Manager Kevin Baker. “It is always our desire to provide the best in service, facilities and playing conditions. This clubhouse provides an intimate and refreshing location to gather with family and friends, or share the triumphs of a day of championship golf at Reunion.” The new clubhouse is part of a multi-pronged improvement plan at the Nicklaus Course. Before construction of the clubhouse began, the 17th and 18th holes were re-routed to elevate the finishing experience. Significant bunker improvement work has just been completed, while several spectacular

homes have now been built in the surrounding Bear’s Den community – creating a true enclave for golfers. The clubhouse was inspired by the rich heritage of Mediterranean Revival architecture in Florida and in particular the work of Addison Mizner. It features large French doors opening to terraces with dark wood roof overhangs. The roof is shaped with barrel tiles and walls of rough stucco that provide depth and texture, along with ornamental ironwork and cast stone window frames. The interior design is characterized by rich woods and contrasting light walls, textural fabrics, and natural earthy colors such as olive, terracotta and soft blues. The restaurant floor mimics terracotta tiles found in Mediterranean manors, while the rich millwork with iron metal detailing and beamed ceilings ensures each guest feels a luxurious sense of place. The clubhouse’s dining experience is an upscale sports bar called Traditions. Serving American regional cuisine, the menu is seasonal and local with farm-to-table elements. The bar includes a signature drink menu, including craft cocktails and signature barrel aged bourbons. The open-air kitchen and service style is designed to be friendly and welcoming, appealing to both members and the local community. On weekends, Traditions offers live musical entertainment making it a
perfect gathering place for celebrations large or small. All of the doors to the dining terrace, which overlooks the 18th green, open to allow the entire restaurant to enjoy an afternoon breeze during nice weather months. Opened in 2006, The Nicklaus Course was designed to flow smoothly and gently from tee to green. A target, parkland-style course, it was designed to be a player’s course rather than what is referred to as “resort golf.” While the 7,244-yard layout is not exceptionally long by today’s standards, postage-stamp greens, forced carries that lead to fairway targets sometimes only 50 yards wide and a fair amount of trouble for wayward shots give the course plenty of bite. The Nicklaus Course remained open throughout the Clubhouse construction process. Additionally, Reunion’s two other Signature layouts, the Watson and Palmer Courses, also continued to accommodate guest and member play. Reunion Resort features 360 resort-style accommodations ranging from luxury suites and condos, to multi-room villas and private 3-to-13-bedroom vacation homes. Recognized as a top golf destination, Reunion is the only location in the world featuring three signature championship golf courses designed by golf’s greatest legends: Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson. The amenity-rich resort also features eight FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM
casual and fine dining options including an award-winning rooftop steakhouse, elegant indoor and outdoor meeting spaces, six hydro-grid clay tennis courts, a full-service boutique spa, 10 community pools and a 5-acre waterpark including slides, a water playground and a 1,000-ft. lazy river. With various real estate and membership opportunities available, guests can stay for a weekend or become members for life. The Orlando resort is managed by Salamander Hotels & Resorts, the luxury hotel company founded by Sheila Johnson, and is part of the Salamander Golf Collection which includes renowned properties Hammock Beach, a Salamander Resort and Innisbrook Resort. The opening of the Nicklaus Clubhouse is a key part of a new initiative to grow the profile of Reunion Resort and Club and a larger trend at clubs to reinvest in their amenities in an effort to grow the game of golf. In January, the company will unveil its new Salamander Signature Golf Experience across its golf portfolio. Salamander, which has been running successful golf resorts for over a decade, has become renowned for quality, service and innovation. Reunion Resort is located at 7593 Gathering Drive, Kissimmee, FL 34747. For more information, call 407-662-1000 or visit www.reunionresort.com.

The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club WHEN YOU LEARN THAT AN 11-YEAROLD ONCE SHOT PAR ON The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club’s 18-hole course, you can’t help but wonder how challenging that course is. But when you learn that the child in question was none other than future PGA legend Jack Nicklaus, you get a better idea of the quality of play. Today, some 67 years later, this Four Diamond resort’s championship golf course is better than ever. A year after its complete renovation by acclaimed course architect John Sanford in conjunction with Jack Nicklaus himself, the course remains challenging for all levels of play. While thorough, ongoing course maintenance keeps the course at peak playing levels year-round, a professional golf staff lets players elevate their golf experience to new heights. Whether golfers are looking for group or private lessons, scrambles and tournament organization, or expert advice on clubs and the game’s latest equipment and technologies, The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club’s pro shop handles all requests. The golf course is public, but membership at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club affords players a number of benefits. These include unlimited play, discounted cart fees, and discounted greens fees for accompanying guests. Members also have full access to the practice facility, can take advantage of club storage and can even make
tee times up to 14 days in advance. Club membership is available on a year-round or seasonal basis and includes other “perks” such as discounts on hotel accommodations, savings on full price retail items in the Golf Pro Shop and 10 percent off food at any of the resort’s three restaurants. For golfers looking for more than a round of play, an overnight, weekend or even a weeklong stay, the resort offers a wealth of opportunities for relaxation and recreation. Situated directly on the Gulf of Mexico’s gentle shoreline, The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf offers a seven-mile stretch of white-sand beach and a variety of water sports. Its world-class spa is staffed by trained professionals who provide wellness treatments and services. The Mary C. Harding Tennis Center boasts a fully stocked Pro Shop, USTA teaching professionals and eight Har-Tru courts. At the edge of the beach is a multiple swimming pool complex,
including an “adults only” pool for those who prefer to be out of the splash zone. Guests with children delight in the resort’s complimentary Kids Club which keeps youngsters busy and engaged while Mom and Dad play golf, tennis, or pursue other interests. Indulgence is always on the menu at the resort’s three restaurants. Fine dining at the award-winning HB’s on the Gulf boasts fresh seafood, steaks and a comprehensive wine list. Breakfast and lunch can be enjoyed at Broadwell’s, the golf course’s “19th hole.” The Sunset Beach Bar & Grill serves ice cold libations and light fare. Featuring live entertainment nightly, it is consistently voted Southwest Florida’s best place to enjoy a sunset Whether you go for a round of golf or an extended stay, The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club will accommodate you perfectly. Tiger Point Golf Club is located on the shores of beautiful Santa Rosa Sound, and features 27 championship holes. After hitting the liks, dine at the Sunset Grille, where you can enjoy local seafood prepared to perfection. Cypress Lakes Golf Club paints a beautiful picture in the spring, when over 300
crepe myrtles and 500 azaleas are in bloom. This course is more mountainous than you would expect to find in Pensacola, which presents a welcome challenge to more avid golfers. If you are visiting on your birthday, be sure to sign up for their eClub to receive a free green fee on your special day!
Hitting the Town
The guys can party in two states at once at the legendary Flora-Bama Lounge, and partake in plenty of people-watching right on the Gulf of Mexico in Perdido Key. Friends can also have a hearty meal of steak and ale at McGuire’s Irish Pub, where $1 million in one-dollar bills are tacked
to the ceilings and walls. Pensacola Bay Brewery makes its own handcrafted beer including local favorites such as the Riptide Amber. Vinyl Music Hall brings in up-and-coming musicians, singer/songwriters and old favorites, while the Portofino Boardwalk makes for a fun evening on Pensacola Beach with many waterfront options and live music. For more information on Pensacola, please visit our website at VisitPensacola.com or call 800.874.1234.

This award-winning golf resort, located in sunny Saint Augustine, Florida, was developed as a place for golf enthusiasts to pay tribute to the great game of golf. Home to the World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum, The Slammer+Squire and King+Bear golf courses, the renowned Renaissance Resort, and the PGA Tour Golf Academy, World Golf Village will provide you with a golf experience unlike any other. At the heart of World Golf Village are the two beautifully conditioned golf courses. Tee off from under the tower of the World Golf Hall of Fame at The Slammer+Squire. This award-winning course was designed by architect Bobby Weed, along with World Golf Hall of Fame Members Sam Snead (the “Slammer”) and Gene Sarazen (the “Squire”). These three men shared a desire to build a golf course that would preserve the area’s natural beauty and reward good shot making….and that’s just what they did. This player-friendly course showcases the pristine, unspoiled wooded areas, wetlands, and natural beauty of the region. It has relatively wide open fairways and several contoured greens. You’ll discover a layout that places an emphasis on the short game which was reflective of the finesse game that made the “Slammer” and “Squire” legends. It features several water hazards, but the picturesque views of the World Golf Hall of Fame will definitely overshadow any challenges you may face. In fact, you can almost hear the voices of legends rooting you on as you make your way to the 18th green. Onsite dining is available before or after your round in the Legends Restaurant+Grille. The menu offers something for everyone – from mouthwatering burgers, freshly made salads and sandwiches, to delicious housemade soups and more. Enjoy the wonderful pub style atmosphere inside or take in the peaceful setting on the outdoor terrace with scenic golf course and water views. The King+Bear Golf Course, named for its co-designers Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, offers a blend of two different design styles that come together to form one masterpiece. Fierce competitors on the golf course, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus took this opportunity off the course to create what is the only design collaboration in the world between these two Hall of Fame members. With over 25 major titles, over 130 PGA Tour Victories, and some 350 golf course designs between the two… you could say the two knew their golf. Opened in 2000,
King+Bear is a remarkable blend of the past, present and future of the game of golf. The front nine is an open, links style layout that gives a nod to the heritage of the historic city of St. Augustine, Fla. The back nine is more traditional Florida golf, fringed with loblolly pines, 200-year-old oak trees, indigenous coquina rock, and numerous water features. Measuring 7,279 from the back tees, it’s a “driver’s” course. This should come as no surprise, as both Palmer and Nicklaus wielded awesome power games in their primes. So enamored of the course he helped design, Arnold Palmer selected hole number 15 as one of his “Dream 18” in Sports Illustrated’s Preview to The Ryder Cup 2006… and we think you’ll agree. After your round, stop by the Champions Restaurant+Grille. The restaurant is open daily for breakfast and lunch and features a menu with American fare and an array of delicious chef creations. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a local craft beer, catch up on the day’s sports on the flat screen TVs, or simply relax with a specialty cocktail on the outdoor terrace while appreciating the views of the manicured fairways and greens. A trip to the World Golf Village Resort
FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM
would not be complete without taking advantage of the other onsite attractions. Immerse yourself in the history of golf and explore an array of historic artifacts, personal memorabilia, and interactive exhibits at the World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum. Or take in one of the latest 3D movies at the IMAX Theater. You may also want to brush up your short game skills at the nationally recognized PGA TOUR Golf Academy. You can even enjoy a fun and casual dining experience at Murray Bros. Caddyshack Restaurant which features great tasting American food with a Chicago flare. World Golf Village Resort is conveniently located in Northeast Florida, 20 minutes south of Jacksonville and 10 minutes north of historic St. Augustine off Interstate 95. The resort is also just a short drive away from historic downtown St. Augustine and the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean. Airline service is available from The Jacksonville International Airport, Northeast Florida Regional Airport and Orlando Sanford International Airport. Central Florida
The Hidden Gem of Florida Golf Golfers who live in Central Florida already know, and more visitors are beginning to learn, some truly fantastic golf opportunities abound throughout Central Florida’s Polk County. With more than 40 public access courses offering 612 holes of golf, Central Florida’s Polk County boasts one of the top collections of golf courses in the United States. Golf groups traveling to the area will find a wide range of course options and unforgettable off-course activities that will make your Central Florida trip one to remember. UNIQUE COURSE OFFERINGS With so many course offerings it is very difficult to pick our favorites, but when it comes to distinctive course design, one has to begin the conversation with Streamsong Resort. Streamsong Resort’s Red Course, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, the Blue Course designed by Tom Doak and the Black Course designed by Gil Hanse, utilize the natural contours, sand dunes and native grasses to offer a golf experience that is reminiscent of the links-style courses of the British Isles. Built upon reclaimed phosphate mining land, Streamsong’s courses are atypical of most Florida golf courses. Southern Dunes Golf & Country Club
stretches out to more than 7,200 yards from the championship tees and this demanding layout features high ornamental grasses and decorative plantings, paired with 180 distinctively colored bunkers that provide spectacular visual appeal throughout your round of golf. The Club at Eaglebrooke provides a challenging, but fair test of golf for players of all ability levels. Oak trees, numerous lakes and strategically placed mounding define the lush rolling fairways, and visually frame each hole as from the tee. BREWS, BLUES AND BARBEQUE Once the golf clubs have been put away, and the side bets settled, your group can then explore some of the great local dining and entertainment offerings that are available throughout Central Florida’s Polk County. With more than 550 lakes dotting Polk County, locals and visitors alike all have their favorite lakeside dining spot. In Winter Haven, with full length windows and a lakeside patio, Harborside Restaurant is a modern American steakhouse, seafood and oyster bar featuring the finest cuts of dry aged meat and daily delivered fresh fish. Also in Winter Haven, with its neighborhood restaurant feel
and its location on the shores of Lake Ned, no place epitomizes casual lakefront dining more than Harry’s Old Place. Situated on the shores of scenic Lake Pierce. Lakeland’s Lake Mirror is best known for its large events and being a perfect place to catch a spectacular sunset over downtown Lakeland, the lake also serves as the backdrop for Texas Cattle Company, the place for those that have a craving for a nice juicy steak cooked over a specially built open-pit mesquite wood fire. A trip to Florida wouldn’t be complete without fresh seafood. Gary’s Oyster Bar & Seafood House in Lake Alfred is known for its eclectic décor, friendly service and fresh seafood. Crazy Fish Bar and Grill is well worth the drive to Lake Wales. For a little taste of Louisiana, Harry’s Seafood Bar & Grille in Lakeland, serves up some good ‘ole down home Cajun favorites. Mojo Federal Swine and Spirits has transformed Lakeland’s Federal Building into the newest culinary and entertainment experience. Mojo Federal is a premier barbecue, southern food, and craft cocktail destination. In Central Florida, Lakeland has served as the leader in the brewpub movement. Brew Hub is a partner brewing enterprise
that brings together a number of smaller craft brewers to brew their beer. The Brew Hub Tasting Room serves locally sourced, naturally raised, made to order food options that are great for pairing with their beers. Swan Brewing offers lakefront views and microbrews just a few blocks from downtown. Kick back in the taproom or relax on the patio as you sip on a selection of more than 20 seasonal and small-batch beers. Brimming with authenticity and local love, Winter Haven’s Grove Roots Brewing Company looks to create inventive, artisanal beers. With names like “Rind & Shine” and “6am Pickers” scrawled onto the chalkboard tap list, there’s no question Grove Roots is serious about bringing Polk County’s citrus heritage to life. While they don’t serve food, Grove Roots has a rotating roster of food trucks available for those wishing to eat. On Friday and Saturday nights, live music is offered at the venue.
After a long day on the course, and after a delicious meal, the way to cap off the evening is with a trip to the Lakeland Loft Cigar Bar and Jazz Club, an ultra-premium upscale Jazz and cigar lounge, located in historic downtown Lakeland. The Lakeland Loft offers a unique musical experience featuring talented local musicians, with live Jazz performances every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. TAKE IN A GAME No matter what time of year you visit Central Florida, your group can catch some professional sports action. Lakeland has been the spring training home of the Detroit Tigers for more than 80 years. From late February through the month of March, you can catch the Detroit Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium as they face other Grapefruit League teams such as the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and the Baltimore Orioles. In fact, there are five other MLB teams within an hour’s drive of Lakeland, making it the perfect “home base” for an extended golf and Spring Training tour. If you prefer the hardcourt to the baseball diamond, Lakeland’s RP Funding Center is home from November to March to the
FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM
Lakeland Magic, Orlando Magic’s G league affiliate. The Center also plays host to the Major Arena Soccer League’s Florida Tropics from December through April. Each May through July, the Tropics take to the outdoor soccer pitch as they compete in the United Soccer League, one of the MSL’s professional soccer development leagues. CHOOSE EVERYTHING Central Florida’s Polk County is one of the most beautiful and affordable golf destinations in Florida. While not as widely known as its more commercial neighbors, Orlando and Tampa, Polk County is a “hidden gem” that offers hundreds of unique attractions, both natural and man-made, that will provide your golf group with plenty of off-course thrills for the young and old alike. For more details or information on all of our local restaurants and craft breweries, our nightlife and entertainment offerings and exciting area attractions, log on to www.VisitCentralFlorida.org to begin planning your group’s Central Florida golf experience. Florida is home to four PGA Tour events and 1,000+ courses, more than any state in the nation, attracting golfers from across the globe in search of sunshine and a great trip. More than five million traveling golfers pour into the state annually, and Daytona Beach has emerged as an increasingly popular destination among savvy group leaders in search of value and good times - on and off the course. That’s right. The home of the Great American Race and the World’s Most Famous Beach is also a rising golf destination. A trip to the area is easy as Daytona Beach International Airport offers nonstop flights via Delta (Atlanta, GA), American Airlines (Charlotte, NC) and - starting in January 2019 - Sunwing (Toronto, Canada) and Silver Airways (Fort Lauderdale, FL). American Airlines will be adding seasonal direct flights from New York City (LGA) starting in May 2019. Located along the Central Florida coast, Daytona Beach has long been a sleeping giant on the golf travel scene. The area is home to the LPGA’s headquarters, providing a prominent relationship with one of the game’s most recognizable brands. More importantly, Volusia County is home to nearly 30 courses that provide a broad range of experiences. If a group wants to enjoy a high-end trip, Daytona Beach delivers. For golfers interested in having as good a time off the course as they do on it, the area is without peer. No list of Daytona Beach’s abundant virtues is complete without mention of the area’s idyllic weather. The first four months of the year are popular among traveling golfers, as many yearn to escape the low temperatures that envelope the majority of the country. Golfers are more likely to make a pair of aces in one round than they are to encounter snow in Daytona Beach. The mild winters make the area a retreat for players in search of sunlight, and that winter warmth has another benefit: courses enjoy optimal conditions during the peak season. With average high temperatures of 68 degrees F in January, 71 in February, 74 in March and 80 in April, Daytona Beach courses are thriving early in the season.

Golf is only half the fun, and Daytona Beach is in a class of its own off the course. From Daytona International Speedway to Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and enough nightlife to power a month-long trip, the good times are just beginning when the final putt drops. With so many options, what does the ideal itinerary look like on a 3-day trip to Daytona Beach? Glad you asked. DAY 1 - The Riv, The Speedway and The Ale Trail The perfect place to begin a Daytona Beach golf trip is Riviera Country Club, one of the area’s most storied and friendly courses. The Riv, as locals fondly call the layout, is home to America’s longest running mini-tour event, and the par 71 plays just 6,250 yards from the tips, providing an opportunity for golfers to post a good score on opening day. Players that hit the course’s crowned greens in the proper spots will have a chance to score, like former PGA Tour winners Bert Yancey and Morris Hatalsky did en route to winning the Riviera Open. Miss in the wrong spots and a frustrating round could await, but regardless of your score, a day spent at Riviera Country Club is a good one. “To put it bluntly, if every county had a golf facility like Riviera Country Club there would be a lot fewer complaints about golf ’s alleged decline,” Golf Channel’s Tim Gavrich wrote of the layout. “The course, owned since it opened in 1953 by the Meyers family, is practically everything an everyday, local-treasure golf course should be.” FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM
To enhance the experience, enjoy a postround lunch in the Riviera clubhouse, which is guaranteed to make your taste buds happy, and it’s the perfect, understated complement to the course. Off the course: After you finish lunch at The Riv, head to Daytona International Speedway for a mid-afternoon tour of the World Center of Racing. The 2.5 mile tri-oval has to be experienced to be properly appreciated; seeing the banked turns in the Speedway’s corners will give you a new appreciation for Jimmy Johnson and his seven NASCAR titles. The tour takes people onto the track and Victory Lane before the checkered flag waves in the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, which chronicles the history of all of forms of motorsports in America. After concluding the Speedway tour, take a stroll or, better yet, a drive on the beach before heading to Daytona Taproom, a leading member of the Daytona Beach Ale Trail, for dinner. The setting is spare with 50 craft brews on tap, a concrete floor and a long, single table for seating, but it’s outstanding. Located on Seabreeze Boulevard, the Daytona Taproom is long on character and it might be home to the area’s best hamburger - the Tijuana Peso Girl, which comes with bacon, fried jalapenos, pepper jack cheese and a sriracha mayo. If you want to conclude the day with a little spice, it’s the perfect entree. DAY 2 - All LPGA International After a good night’s sleep, it’s time to head to Daytona Beach’s signature golf facility, LPGA International, for 36 holes at two of
DAYTONA BEACH AREA CVB
Daytona Beach
Florida’s premier public layouts. Start with The Hills Course, which challenges with fairways lined by beautiful magnolia trees and native pines, providing an experience that occasionally stirs echoes of Pinehurst. With no parallel fairways and hardly any homes to speak of, the Hills Course is a 4.5-star design worthy of building a golf trip around. The layout stretches to 6,954 yards, but plays a much more manageable 6,255 yards from the white tees, which are the most commonly utilized. With several forced carries and tree lines that punish wayward drives, the first shot on a hole is often the most important. The course is always in immaculate condition, highlighted by greens that are as fast and true as any along the Central Florida coast. On a layout full of memorable holes, the par 5 eighth stands above. Playing from the white tees, water runs up the left side of the 508-yard challenge. Long hitters will have the option of going for the green in two, but the putting surface sticks out in the water, meaning there is no room to miss. A round on the Hills Course will present risk-reward decisions, challenge various aspects of your game, and deliver the type of experience one would expect at a facility that has hosted some of the game’s greatest women’s players. Next up is Rees Jones’ acclaimed layout. A links style design, the Jones Course has five sets of tees that stretch from 5,131 yards to 7,088 yards, providing the appropriate level of challenge for players of all skill levels. Strategic mounding, expansive bunkers, natural marsh areas and lakes provide unforgettable visuals and have helped make the course one of Florida’s most popular. The Jones Course installed new TifEagle Bermuda greens in the summer of 2017 and the putting surfaces are among the state’s best. It’s worth mentioning that another of Daytona Beach’s many attributes is its appeal, as a destination, to men and women. The courses at LPGA International are strong enough to challenge the best men’s players the property annually hosts numerous men’s collegiate events - and as the former host of the LPGA Titleholders event, the likes of Annika Sorenstam and Karrie Webb, a two-time champion, have tested their games in Daytona Beach. The destination’s appeal to women doesn’t end at LPGA International. Volusia County’s courses are designed for players of all skill levels, which has certainly enhanced the area’s popularity. Off the course: After 36 holes of championship golf, your group should reward itself with a relaxing, upscale evening at one of the
area’s best Italian restaurants - The Cellar. The award-winning restaurant, which makes everything from scratch, is located in historic downtown Daytona Beach in the basement of the former seasonal home of President Warren G. Harding. The house was built in 1907 by Harding’s father-in-law Amos H. Kling and is now on the National Historic Registry. With a wine list as good as any and a menu that combines traditional Italian favorites and creative new entrees, The Cellar serves a delectable meal. DAY 3 - Returning to Golf ’s Roots After challenging the modern masterpieces at LPGA International, a round at one of Daytona Beach’s two Donald Ross courses provides golfers a reminder of the area’s deep historical ties to the game. Ross, widely regarded as America’s most important golf course architect, designed Pinehurst No. 2, Oakland Hills, East Lake Golf Club and Seminole Golf Club, among many other high profile layouts, and he left his mark in Daytona Beach. The South Course at Daytona Beach Golf Club and New Smyrna Golf Club are both Ross designs and should be near the top of your must-play list. Both layouts, in addition to Riviera, are part of the Florida Historic Golf Trail and are a delight. Golfers won’t go wrong at either course, but an opportunity to play a Ross design is one that should be taken advantage of. Off the course: After concluding your final round at one of the area’s historic layouts, enjoy lunch at Racing’s North Turn, which sits on the exact location where racing history began in Daytona Beach. You will enjoy a stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean and can imagine what it was like when cars began speeding around the property in the late 1930s, planting the seeds for Daytona Beach’s growth into an auto racing mecca. After enjoying lunch, make the trip to Ponce Inlet Lighthouse. It will require 203 steps to scale Florida’s tallest lighthouse but the view from the top of Florida’s tallest lighthouse makes the effort worthwhile. It’s the perfect cap to a trip. The challenge golfers face is that a threeday trip merely scratches the surface when it comes to Daytona Beach’s offerings. Spruce Creek Country Club is built around one of the world’s largest private airports, giving new meaning to the term “flyer” on a layout that places a premium on playability and quality conditioning. Venetian Bay Golf Club is yet another 4-star facility that offers a diversity of challenges. Golfers play through tree-lined fairways FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM
on the opening nine before facing an open, links-style design after the turn. Victoria Hills, a semi-private Ron Garl design, is one of Central Florida’s best kept secrets, rewarding golfers that make the trip to DeLand with a creative layout that plays through expansive oak trees and Augusta pines. While what happens on the golf course is the most important component of any trip, where groups stay matters, and Daytona Beach has as diverse a selection of accommodations offerings as any destination in America. Places to stay in Daytona Beach range from oceanfront to riverfront and everything in between. Accommodations that host family vacations during the summer months are perfect for golfers throughout the rest of the year. Multiple bedroom units with modern kitchens and living rooms, many of them overlooking Daytona Beach’s famed beach, provide idyllic housing. Golfers can gather and continue the banter and camaraderie that lies at the heart of so many trips long into the night. Best of all, what helps Daytona Beach deliver value is the area’s ability to package golf and accommodations into one deal. Players can customize trips to fit their budget and preferences. The quality of Daytona Beach’s golf offerings are only enhanced by its proximity to other attractive destinations. The area is a short drive from Bay Hill Golf Club, host of Arnold Palmer’s PGA Tour event, and TPC Sawgrass, home of the Players Championship, providing easy access to a pair of bucket list venues. It’s worth the time to drive to PGA Tour venues when Daytona Beach’s seemingly endless off-course fun is factored into the equation. The area is home to the Daytona Tortugas, the Cincinnati Reds Class A-affiliate, allowing you to enjoy future Major League Baseball stars at historic Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The area also has a thriving craft beer scene, meaning golfers are never more than a chip shot from a quality, local brew, highlighted by the 20 breweries, distilleries and taprooms that make up the Daytona Beach Ale Trail. The newest addition to the trail is the Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery at ONE DAYTONA, the dining, retail and entertainment district located directly across from Daytona International Speedway. Daytona Beach provides quality courses, a range of accommodations offerings, beautiful weather, a good time and value, factors that, when taken together, help bring groups back year after year. On or off the course, Florida’s Paradise Coast offers an experience par excellence. IMAGINE WORLD-CLASS GOLF COURSES designed by the likes of Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, and Arnold Palmer. Ideal weather that’s perfect for teeing it up all year round. And countless ways to stay, play and dine in a destination that’s as luxurious as it is beautiful. If that sounds like paradise to you, that’s because it is. Florida’s Paradise Coast, to be precise: Naples, Marco Island and the Everglades. With more than 90 public and private golf courses perfectly suited to all skill levels and handicaps, the area has earned its well-deserved reputation as Southwest Florida’s premier golf destination. It’s so good, the International Association of Golf Travel Operators (IAGTO) has named it the Number 1 Golf Destination in North America. Which means it’s time you packed up your sticks and made your way to Paradise!
AROUND HERE, EVERY SEASON IS GOLF SEASON. Mother Nature must be a single-digit
handicapper, because she always sees to it that the weather on Florida’s Paradise Coast is absolutely perfect for a round of golf. From December through May, you can trade your winter boots for golf shoes and tee it up under sunny, clear blue skies every day. Be advised, however: It’s the peak tourist season, so tee times may be limited. From June through November, you can take advantage of the area’s “value season.” That means fewer golfers, faster play, and even discounted greens fees and hotel rates. Summer and fall temperatures are warmer, of course, so it’s best to make your tee times early. You’ll be off the course and on the beach by midday! THE ONE GOLF DESTINATION WHERE WATER ALWAYS COMES INTO PLAY. On Florida’s Paradise Coast, the only thing more impressive than its golf courses are its award-winning beaches. The area boasts 30 miles of uncrowded white sand beaches along the turquoise waters
COURTSEY FLORIDA’S PARADISE COAST
PLAY WHERE THE PROS PLAY. If you need proof that Florida’s Paradise
Coast has some pretty serious credentials when it comes to the greatest game ever invented, consider this: The area is home to several top-tier golf tournaments: • The LPGA CME Group Tour Championship, held annually at The Tiburon Golf Club at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort in Naples. • The PGA Chubb Classic Champions Tour, celebrates 32 years in Naples, and will be held in February at The Classics @ Lely Resort. • The PGA QBE Shootout, founded by Golf Hall of Famer Greg Norman, and held every year at The Tiburon Golf Club. Both pros and amateurs alike will tell you the same thing: That the courses and conditions on Florida’s Paradise Coast are among the best in world. So, whether you’re teeing it up for big prize money, bragging rights, or anything in between, you’re sure to experience a round you’ll never forget.

of the Gulf of Mexico. They’re the perfect place to relax after a day on the links, or enjoy a barefoot stroll on the beach at sunset. Of course, if you’re looking to add a little more excitement to your visit, there are plenty of other ways to make a splash. Rent a paddleboard or kayak and navigate the calm waters of the Gulf. Rent a jet ski and explore the mangrove-surrounded waterways of the Ten Thousand Islands. Hop aboard one of the area’s many sightseeing boats for a leisurely cruise where you can spot dolphins, manatees, eagles and more. Or simply charter a fishing boat and reel in The Big One on a deep-sea excursion you’ll never forget. With so much water at your disposal, there’s no limit to the ways you can enjoy it – or the memories you’ll head home with! AS MANY PLACES TO STAY AS THERE ARE TO PLAY. Finding the perfect place to stay when you visit Florida’s Paradise Coast is easy. It all depends on what you’re looking for. The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club has the oldest
golf course in Naples and is part of Florida’s Historic Golf Trail. And the Naples Grande Beach Resort and LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort each offer their own stunning courses. If you’re simply looking for a place to lay your head at the end of a long day of golf, there are countless other lodging options. Boutique hotels. Cozy bed & breakfasts. Toast the day’s best shots and lowest rounds with a craft beer or cocktail from one the area’s many unique bars and lounges. With local beers from Naples Beach Brewery, Riptide Brewing Company, Bone Hook Brewing, Marco Island Brewery, Oil Well Craft Beer and more, you’re bound to find a FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM

There’s nothing better than discovering a new course that challenges you, offers gorgeous scenery and leaves you coming back for more. Florida’s Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach area gives you more than 20 courses offering great year-round play, with two ranked at 4 ½ stars by Golf Digest. Take in scenic, natural backdrops, with three area courses Audubon-certified. Courses are some of the most accessible in the state, with a higher percentage of tracks open to public play than most anywhere else. And players also appreciate the value. You’ll find great courses, accommodations, dining and more at great prices all year round. It’s no wonder the area was ranked the “3rd Best Place in the Country to Live and Play Golf” by Golf Digest.

Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach: our best side is outside certified courses teeming with a variety of native wildlife. This diverse pool of courses also features two 4 ½ star courses, including Riverwood Golf Club, which Golfweek Magazine ranked as the #15 best course in the state of Florida in May 2012. Whether taking a golf vacation with the guys or gals or simply playing a couple rounds during a family vacation, it doesn’t need to be stressful or cost a fortune. In fact, the area was named the U.S. Best Value Destination in 2014 by trivago. According to the world’s largest online hotel search site, the destination offers “the biggest bang for your buck on vacation.” Adding to the value, virtually every course in Punta
Gorda/Englewood Beach is open to the public year-round and greens fees (with a cart) in peak season average approximately $55 per round with summer and fall rates even lower. Find adventure off the greens, too. Aquatic adventures beckon with nearly 200 miles of Blueway Trails ideal for kayaking, canoeing and standup paddle boarding. Charlotte Harbor has been named one of the top 10 places to sail by SAIL Magazine and the area is known for its world-class fishing with deep sea and back bay angling opportunities. For a true adrenaline rush, fish for silver king in the Tarpon Capital of the World. The dining scene in Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands is an eclectic mix of seafood shacks, sidewalk cafes, waterfront eateries, fine dining and sweet spots. When you learn that an 11-year-old once shot par on The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club’s 18-hole course, you can’t help but wonder how challenging that course is. Whether golfers are looking for group

or private lessons, scrambles and tournament organization, or expert advice on clubs and the game’s latest equipment and technologies, The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club’s pro shop handles all requests. The golf course is public, but membership at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club affords players a number of benefits. These include unlimited play, discounted cart fees, and discounted greens fees for accompanying guests. Members also have full access to the practice facility, can take advantage of club storage and can even make tee times up to 14 days in advance. Club membership is available on a year-round or seasonal basis and includes other “perks” such as discounts on hotel accommodations, savings on full price retail items in the Golf Pro Shop and 10 percent off food at any of the resort’s three restaurants.
For golfers looking for more than a round of play, an overnight, weekend or even a week-long stay, the resort offers a wealth of opportunities for relaxation and recreation. At the edge of the beach is a multiple swimming pool complex, including an “adults only” pool for those who prefer to be out of the splash zone.

Recent Florida Grapefruit League Facility Renovations Secure MLB Spring Training in Florida for Decades to Come By Nick Gandy Since 2010, eight Florida Spring Training facilities have been built or renovated to accommodate baseball fans as they flock to the Sunshine State to get an early look at their favorite team. In the last decade, renovations have been made to Ed Smith Stadium, home of the Baltimore Orioles, LECOM Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, George M. Steinbrenner Field, home of the New York Yankees, Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium, home of the Detroit Tigers, Hammond Stadium at the CenturyLink Complex, home of the Minnesota Twins and First Data Field, home of the New York Mets. New stadiums have debuted in Fort Myers with JetBlue Park, home of the Boston Red Sox and the FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, home of the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals in West Palm Beach. All of these new or renovated stadiums have all of the latest amenities that include 360 degree boardwalks around the stadium so fans never miss a pitch or crack of the bat. They feature tiki bars and party areas in the outfield with a variety of cold beverages and the finest ballpark food. Once the final out is recorded in the 2019 Spring Training season for the Toronto Blue Jays on March 23, an $80 million renovation begins at Dunedin Stadium. Updates will increase the stadium capacity from 5,500 to 8,500 and add alternate seating on at least one “party deck” and a boardwalk linking each side of the stadium around the outfield. There will be a tiki bar, more food

options and retail, as well as at least five private luxury suites. Plans call, too, for added restrooms, entrances and elevators, plus other standard updates, like new scoreboards and technology. During the heat of the 2017 summer, ground was broken on what is to become CoolToday Park, the future home of the Atlanta Braves in North Port in south Sarasota County. CoolToday Park will have 6,500 fixed seats, with berm, sun deck and group-area seating bumping total capacity to around 8,200. When the Braves host the Tampa Bay Rays in their last spring training game on March 24, fans will get a first look at the park’s 360-degree concourse walkway, two luxury suites and two larger hospitality areas, an Outfield patio and bar area, with other gathering spaces scattered throughout the ballpark, With all of the renovations and amenities that make Florida Spring Training ballparks a baseball fan’s dream destination, ticket buying options have become plentiful. In the last few years, most teams have gone to a dynamic pricing system with high demand games against prime opponents and weekend games carrying an additional few dollars to the final price. Gone are the days of walking up to the box office and grabbing a prime seat right before first pitch. But don’t let that deter you as Florida Spring Training games are still one of the most enjoyable afternoons a baseball fan can spend in the Florida sunshine.
FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM
After checking www.floridagrapefruitleague. com for all of the 2019 schedule, ticket and ballpark information, here are some tips: • Purchase your tickets ahead of time. • Get to the ballpark at least an hour before the first pitch. Even earlier if possible. Most gates open two hours before first pitch. • Go to the team store and pick out some merchandise. Also, be sure to buy a program. You’ll need it for the players with numbers 60 and up later in the game. • Take a walk around the park and find something to eat and drink. • Spend the first three innings of the game in your purchased seat. • Strike up a conversation with another ticket purchaser in your area and enjoy some good baseball banter. • Watch fans mingle with the players and coaches and feel free to join in the mingling yourself. • In the fourth through sixth innings take a walk around the park again and take in the views from all of the different spots around the park. Grab another beverage and something to eat and take in the game from a different view. • Return to the purchased seat and use the purchased game program to figure out who’s wearing numbers 65-99 and find out more about them. • Take your time exiting the park and talk some more baseball with fans as they exit as well. • Find a local restaurant or watering hole, preferably on an Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico beach, and enjoy the Spring Training host community. They’re glad you’re spending time in their town.

A Golf Haven and So Much More at PGA National Resort & Spa Reasons abound why golfing greats like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Rory McElroy choose to live in the West Palm Beach area of South Florida – plenty of year-round sunshine, lush flora, and teeming fauna, beautiful people, great restaurants, scores of bigtime golf courses. For travelers wishing to partake in the enviable lifestyle of those globetrotting greats all one needs to do is enter the grounds of PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, check-in, and the rest is easy. First off, as far as golf goes, few destinations have a pedigree as storied. The vaunted resume of its Champion Course includes hosting the 1983 Ryder Cup, 1987 PGA Championship, and two decades of the Senior PGA Championship.
76
\\
Currently, it hosts The Honda Classic – a wildly popular stop on the PGA Tour’s “Florida Swing.” The layout is best known for its renowned “Bear Trap” – a series of three demanding holes many considered the toughest stretch in the game. The Champion Course re-opened this past October to rave reviews following a major renovation by Nicklaus Design. Significant improvements implemented by Nicklaus Design, led by senior design associate Chris Cochran, included the removal of Palmetto palms on the right side of No. 1 and left side of No. 9 to offer more options for PGA TOUR players on t tee shots as well as approaches into both greens. The removal also allows for better crowd flow during the Honda Classic as the annual event has FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM
become one of the most popular and well-attended on the PGA TOUR schedule. Additionally, one-third of an acre (14,400 sq. ft.) was recaptured on The Champion’s putting surfaces, adding an average of 800 square feet per green. Most notably, the putting surfaces will return to the native design Jack Nicklaus and his team implemented 16 years ago. The green complexes were re-built, shaped and grassed with Tif-Eagle Bermuda. This results in seamless transitions from green surrounds to putting surfaces and tighter relationships with respect to greenside bunkers. The changes allow for consistency in a variety of weather conditions and make one of the true “bucket list” courses in the game even more compelling.
COURTSEY PGA NATIONAL
Nicklaus and his team also comprehensively redesigned The Champion in 2002 as well as a 2014 redesign of layout’s stout par-4 14th hole which leads to the famous “Bear Trap.” “We are honored to have worked on a course with such a storied history with both Jack Nicklaus and his design company,” says Cochran. “We took the advice of the best players in the game and made one of the great layouts in the U.S. even stronger.” Next to its daunting first hole, The Champion Course’s outstanding driving range was significantly upgraded last year and includes a secluded section for PGA TOUR pros to practice their short game as well as greenside and fairway bunker play. The new pristine area garnered rave reviews from the players in the 2018 Honda Classic. “As the home of a PGA TOUR course as well as being an iconic golf resort and private membership club, we continue to invest significantly in our brand assets,” says Greg “Coach” Saunders, PGA National’s vice-president and managing director. “The time was right to restore the greens and we are excited to announce the completion of this major project on our distinguished Champion Course.” Guests can also take advantage of the newly transformed Palmer Course, originally designed by legendary Arnold Palmer, which reopened in late 2017 after undergoing a comprehensive renovation. Most notably, golfers will discover all 62 bunkers have been modernized and reshaped to improve sight lines off the tee as well as on approach shots into the greens. All 18 fairways were re-turfed with scientifically-advanced Celebration grass which provides prime playing conditions year-round. A gem of a course is now even better. The legendary destination also features three added first-class layouts: The Fazio, The Squire, and The Estate. The resort also has the distinction of being home to both the David Leadbetter Golf Academy and Dave Pelz Scoring Game School. Long known as one of the true innovators in instruction, Leadbetter’s creative teaching methods have helped everyone from beginners to golfing superstars like Ernie Els, Michelle Wie and Trevor Immelman. The “Score-Focused” program at PGA National was developed by Dave Pelz, the game’s foremost authority on the short game and putting. The curriculum encompasses distance wedge shots, pitching, chipping, sand play and putting. PGA TOUR professionals such as Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and Mike Weir have all relied upon Pelz’s
master instruction. PGA National’s “Every Ball Counts” offers players of all levels a unique goalbased improvement method validated by PGA TOUR players and elite Olympic athletes for over 30 years. The training is specifically designed to seamlessly incorporate all aspects of golf performance. Every Ball Counts teaches the player to perform the same golf swing whether in practice, club championships or The Masters. Guests can tone up in the weight and cardiovascular training rooms, stretch their core in a Pilates class, take an early morning swim in the lap pool or serve and volley under the stars on the lighted Har-Tru courts at the PGA National Sports & Racquet club. The two-story facility features ultramodern exercise equipment, indoor racquetball court, three aerobics studios with sound systems, a five-lane saltwater lap pool, spin room with video road mapping, indoor volleyball court, two lighted pickle/paddleball courts, 18 Har Tru tennis courts (11 lit for night play) and a racquetball court. A visit to the 40,000 sq. ft. Spa at PGA National to refocus and rejuvenate is not to be missed. With its 32 treatment areas and over 100 diverse treatment options to choose from its a challenge to choose just one service including celebrity famous HydraFacial, Bamboo Massage, exotic body treatments, nail care, hair care and more. Awarded “Best Place to be Pampered” and a “Conde Nast Top 25 Resort Spa”, Spa guests indulge in the healing properties of two mineral pools with salts from the Dead Sea and the Sallies’ De Bearn of France pre

or post-treatment. While lounging poolside the Waters of the World Cafe serves up a variety of healthy wraps, fresh salads, fruit smoothies and a full bar featuring guest favorite “Spatinis.” PGA National features exceptional dining options for all tastes including its chefdriven Ironwood Steak & Seafood restaurant and eight other on-site dining options to savor some of the finest cuisines on the PGA Boulevard.
