is the only destination in the world where players can experience three distinct golf courses designed by four legendary architects —

Gil Hanse’s design is a dazzling layout offering breathtaking views of the vast landscape.

Streamsong® Red, a lake-dotted layout designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw that features striking landforms, rolling terrain and open savannah; Streamsong® Blue, a Tom Doak course revered for its elevation changes, wildgrass-lined fairways, enormous bunkers and towering sand dunes; and now a third championship layout, Streamsong® Black, designed by Gil Hanse. Streamsong® Black is a dazzling par-73 championship layout that offers breath- taking views of the landscape, which includes owing elevation, rolls, tumbles, sand ridges and a revetted bunkering style reminiscent of Australia’s Sand Belt Region. Unlike Stream-

song Red’s and Streamsong Blue’s creatively and expertly intertwined layouts, Streamsong Black stands alone as a proper complement. The highly anticipated course was revealed to the world in September 2017 and has already earned top honors, including GOLF’s “Best New Course of the Year.” This new addition features a two-acre putting course called The Gauntlet and a free- owing practice area known as The Round- about; both add to the ultimate resort experience. Streamsong® Black also features an architecturally advanced clubhouse, home to the Bone Valley Tavern restaurant, which offers panoramic vistas of one of the most ex-

citing additions to the game of golf today. A “bucket list” destination for serious golfers, the remarkable golf is complemented by equally accomplished offerings beyond the fairways. Intentionally designed on 16,000 acres convenient to Tampa and Orlando and in harmony with its natural surroundings, the 228- room luxury destination resort features a grotto-style AcquaPietraTM Spa, guided bass fishing on multiple lakes and streams, sporting clays, tennis, archery, nature trails, a lakeside infinity-edge pool, and five fine and casual dining options. Already home to two nationally ranked courses (both can be found in GOLF’s “Top 100 Courses You Can Play,” with Streamsong® Red at No. 10 and Streamsong® Black at No. 14), the three-night Streamsong Tour Package offers guests the opportunity to experience three must-play courses that will rival the best golf venues in the world.

The famed Nicklaus design has welcomed the world’s best golfers for the Honda Classic since 2007 and hosted the 1983 Ryder Cup. Immaculate conditions and a challenging layout make the Champion a “must-play” for all serious golfers; the infamous “Bear Trap” (holes 15 through 17) comprises what USA Today hails as “one of the toughest stretches in golf.” PGA National Resort & Spa has a multitude of facilities available for guests looking to improve their golf skills during their stay. PGA Golf Club THERE’S AN UNDENIABLE BUZZ surrounding PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie. The PGA of America’s flagship property is in the midst of a new era as enhancements and renovations have the club in the best shape ever. The Dye Course – designed by the game’s most creative architect, Pete Dye – recently re-opened following a complete re-grassing project. Celebration Bermuda was installed on the fairways while all 18 greens were expanded to original sizes and re-grassed with smooth-rolling, Tifeagle Ultra’dwarf Bermuda. In addition, fresh sand was added to bunkers and several bunker faces were refined and re-sodded. Members and guests are raving about the course’s tournament-level conditioning. “The Dye Course is in the best shape since it opened,” says Jimmy Terry, PGA Senior General Manager. “Led by Head Superintendent Dick Gray, the project has restored the entertaining layout to Pete Dye’s original vision and intent.” The re-grassing initiative came on the heels of another successful course renovation; the touted Wanamaker Course re-opened in late 2015 following similar enhancements. As a result, the Tom Fazio-design jumped five spots to No. 16 in Golfweek’s 2016 “Best: State-byState Courses You Can Play” list; the Dye Course – currently ranked No. 27 – will surely follow suit making PGA Golf Club one of only a handful of properties with two courses on the impressive list. Two other unique courses are available at PGA Golf Club. The Ryder Course, also designed by Tom Fazio, presents a Carolinas-feel with rolling hills, majestic pines and several water hazards. The nearby St. Lucie Trail Golf Club, originally designed by Jim Fazio and revitalized by Gray in 2014, is a shorter and tighter layout that rewards club selection and accuracy. Adding to the energized atmosphere at PGA Golf Club is the modernized, 20,000 square-foot clubhouse. The Tom-Hoch design features contemporary elements of style throughout the building to reflect the PGA of America’s rich history. The PGA relocated some notable trophies and artifacts that trace its 100-year history to the new “PGA Gallery,” an on-site museum. Highlighting the displays are replicas of the major Championship trophies including the original Wanamaker Tro-

phy. The new Taplow Pub, named in honor of Rodman Wanamaker’s business group that proposed the idea to form the PGA in 1916, features a fresh menu and 15 TVs with individualized programming available for each booth. Rounding out the golf experiences at PGA Golf Club is the PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance. Combining on-course instruction, golf specific technology, practical application, and specialized club and equipment fittings, it’s a “must visit” for any golfer teeing it up at PGA Golf Club. Guests can hone every facet of their game on the facility’s expansive driving range and putting green, multiple practice bunkers and short course. “PGA Golf Club offers one of the most complete golf experiences in the country,” continues Terry. “With four unique layouts designed by the game’s best, a comprehensive practice facility and fine amenities, it’s hard to beat.” Hailed as an ultimate golf resort destination, PGA Golf Club is less than a two-hour drive from Orlando and Miami, and less than three hours from Tampa and Fort Myers. Ranked among the “75 Best Golf Resorts” by Golf Digest, it’s located less than 50 minutes north of Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) off Interstate 95; PBI offers nearly 100 non-stop flights from more than 25 cities in the U.S. and Canada.

Gulf Coast Golfing

Pensacola Bay Area visitors are given the luxury of choosing between nearly a dozen PGA-rated golf courses with 180 holes of picturesque scenes from woodlands to wetlands. Offering public and semiprivate courses, the destination provides challenges for even the most seasoned golf enthusiast.

Local Legends

The Pensacola Bay Area is home to numerous golf legends. Bubba Watson, Heath Slocum and Boo Weekley all attended Milton High School and are active on the PGA tour. Jerry Pate, 1976 U.S. Open Champion, resides in Pensacola and designs golf courses around the world and at home. Joe Durant ranks in the top 100 in Career Earnings on the PGA Tour.

Scenic Hills Country Club is not your average Florida golf course. Tiger Point Golf Club is located on the shores of beautiful Santa Rosa Sound, and features 27 championship holes. Cypress Lakes Golf Club paints a beautiful picture in the spring, when over 300 crepe myrtles and 500 azaleas are in bloom. This course is more mountainous than you would expect to find in Pensacola, which presents a welcome challenge to more avid golfers. If you are visiting on your birthday, be sure to sign up for their eClub to receive a free green fee on your special day!

Stunning Courses

Osceola Municipal Golf Course is an 18-hole course open from daylight to dark, every day of the year except for Christmas Day. Newly renovated in 2011, their green fees average around $30, which includes a cart. Updates include a remodeled restaurant, complete with a new menu, along with the new construction of the practice-range area. A.C. Read, a picturesque course beneath live oaks on Bayou Grande, is open to all active and retired military. The course is on Naval Air Station Pensacola, and offers 27 championship holes with an additional 18-hole executive course. Perdido Bay Golf Club was named best new course by Golf Digest when it opened several years ago, and was the site of the Pensacola Open for 10 years The course offers overnight accommodations at Cottages on the Green. Legends Bar & Grille offers a diverse menu with a full bar and is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week and Friday night dinner. Be on the lookout for their two resident alligators!

Hitting the Town

The guys can party in two states at once at the legendary Flora-Bama Lounge, and partake in plenty of people-watching right on the Gulf of Mexico in Perdido Key. Friends can also have a hearty meal of steak and ale at McGuire’s Irish Pub, where $1 million in one-dollar bills are tacked to the ceilings and walls. Pensacola Bay Brewery makes its own handcrafted beer including local favorites such as the Riptide Amber. Vinyl Music Hall brings in up-and-coming musicians, singer/songwriters and old favorites, while the Portofino Boardwalk makes for a fun evening on Pensacola Beach with many waterfront options and live music. THE HAMMOCK BEACH STORY:

O O

verlooking two miles of pristine Atlantic shoreline in seemingly undiscovered Palm Coast, the AAA Four Diamond rated Hammock Beach Resort is an unspoiled haven beckoning to be explored. Presenting true luxury nestled among nature, Hammock Beach Resort offers an upscale escape surrounded by scenes of old Florida. Engulfed in the traditions and history of the nation's oldest city, St. Augustine, just 30 minutes to the north, and the birthplace of speed, Daytona Beach, 30 minutes to the south, Hammock Beach is in the center of the action yet just far enough away. The resort offers all the comforts of home and more with 330 beautifully ornate and spacious villas and suites ranging from one-, two-, and three-bedroom options, each with private balconies and sweeping ocean views. The Lodge at Hammock Beach, is a recently refreshed, intimate accommodation option featuring 20 guest rooms with unobstructed ocean views, direct beach access and oceanfront dining at the newly-reimagined Atlantic Grille restaurant.

28

\\

Located within the amenity-rich resort, Lodge guests can choose from one of three styles of freshly upgraded rooms – each adorned with coastal design décor, a private balcony overlooking the ocean’s hues, a sophisticated marble entry, and a spacious bathroom with granite vanities, walk-in shower and large garden tub. In addition, Lodge guests can enjoy a tranquil and exclusive oceanfront pool with service from the Atlantic Grille. “The Lodge Experience” includes a personal, VIP greeting by a Lodge Host with a bubbly Champagne toast, $25 daily dining credit to be used at any of the six dining options on property, daily Chef selected breakfast items such as fresh fruits and other snacks, daily coffee in the welcoming foyer from 6-10 a.m., and a nightly turndown service with amenity and complimentary bottled water. The debut of the new Lodge Experience follows numerous enhancements at Hammock Beach Resort. The resort recently refurbished its grand lobby to now feature FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM

beautiful new flooring, contemporary furniture and lighting, and a brand new sushi bar. It also upgraded 75 of its spacious one-bedroom suites, including installation of new carpet, furniture, updated artwork, flat-panel televisions and reconstructed kitchenettes. All 15,000 square feet of the resorts indoor meeting and event space were also updated with new carpet, wall coverings and lighting. In addition, the resort has refreshed the décor in its Delfinos Italian restaurant and updated the interior design in its Loggerheads Lounge. Hammock Beach is home to two worldclass golf courses, the Jack Nicklaus Signature Design Ocean Course and the Tom Watson Signature Design Conservatory Course, offering a distinctive style of play surrounded by spectacular views of the natural landscape. As part of a commitment to excellence, the resort is undergoing a complete restoration of the Ocean Course. Famed for its six Atlantic Ocean-hugging holes and thrilling closing stretch named “The Bear Claw,” the course has had all of its fairways,

greens and rough re-grassed with the salt-tolerant Platinum Paspalum, while each tee box, bunker and green complex has been re-constructed as well. Aside from championship golf, the amenity-rich resort offers storybook experiences with a 6.5-acre multi-level pool complex with a lazy river, twisting water slide, sandy beach pool, kids and adult only pools and heated indoor lap pool. Walk in the footsteps of the world’s greatest explorers and discover that youth is not in a fountain, but in a lifestyle. The rejuvenating ocean-inspired 10,000 square-foot full-service spa and salon offers indoor and outdoor treatments and draws from the bountiful resources of its unspoiled beaches, rich history and unique setting. The Spa at Hammock Beach is open to the public and offers products and services that incorporate the natural resources of the beaches just steps away. Coquina-laden scrubs and mineral-rich thalassotherapy products ensure each spa goers’ experience is tailored specifically to their needs. Men’s and women’s locker rooms feature additional relaxation without an appointment in the form of an inhalation room, sauna and steam room. Take a culinary adventure and experience the epicurean delight of the resort’s multiple restaurants and bars including the aforementioned Loggerheads, Delfinos, The Sushi Bar, Cigar Bar, and its recently reimagined signature restaurant, Atlantic Grille, which is Palm

Coast’s only public oceanfront restaurant. Offering a new look but the same great epicurean experience, the Atlantic Grille’s spectacular, and sweeping, ocean views paired with an elegant South Florida design, make this award-winning oceanfront restaurant the place to be for breakfast, lunch and dinner. With an emphasis on freshly caught seafood and an extensive beverage offering, the Atlantic Grille’s new “Shore-to-Table” experience is a must. As part of its reimagining, “The Tapas Room” at Atlantic Grille was born. The Tapas Room’s international small plate-sharing menu includes dishes inspired by the flavors of Asia, Europe and the Americas, and features local beers and wines by the glass tailored to the cuisine's local flavor. The ultimate in relaxation, sit indoors or out on the patio to enjoy ocean and golf course views. Rounding out the amenities, the resort boasts a 200-slip marina, tennis center with

eight lighted Hydro-Grid clay tennis courts, 9-hole putting course, bike fleet, over 55,000 square-feet of indoor and outdoor flexible meeting and event space, and one of the most relaxing, unspoiled, coquina-laden beaches in the state. The award-winning Hammock Beach has been recognized as one of the premium oceanfront golf resorts on the east coast, and provides the ideal setting for corporate incentives, meetings, retreats and conferences, and even offers couples in search of a storybook setting to tie the knot the perfect backdrop for their dream wedding to become a reality. Life at Hammock Beach is more than just a vacation getaway, it is something that becomes a part of you. We invite you to begin exploring with us today! Greg Norman Unveils In-Cart ‘Shark Experience’ For Golfers With Music, Video And GPS BY ERIK MATUSZEWSKI

A hotel television might not seem like the best source of inspiration, but it was for Greg Norman in creating the “Shark Experience.” With a TV remote in hand, Norman was scrolling through the deep menu of options in his hotel room some years ago when he first came up with the idea of bringing connectivity and customized content to golf carts. The concept took more than four years to deliver, but Norman – together with partners Verizon, GPSi and Club Car – is now set to roll out the technology at courses throughout the U.S. in 2018. The innovative Shark Experience features music and video on a high-definition 10-inch touchscreen display in the cart in addition to GPS technology. The connected carts – from Club Car, of course – allow golfers to enjoy curated content from Verizon, most notably streaming music via Slacker Radio that can be easily searched by artist or genre. There’s also a wealth of video options, from live sports and highlights to news and entertainment, if you’re inclined to stay that connected during your round. And golfers in need of some in-round tips will find those too; a swipe of a finger can pull up Norman demonstrating the best way to hit a tricky long bunker shot. “At the end of the day we truly believe we have an innovative, game-changing opportunity for the game of golf that’s going to be

32

\\

accretive to everybody,” says Norman. “We completely understand some golf courses are not going to like this, there’s no question about it,” he adds. “But that’s their choice. That’s why I say, ‘Your game, your way.’ I’m extremely proud of this.” The idea is as much connectivity as a user would want. As such, there are different price points that would tack $5, $7 or $10 onto the standard cart fee. In a competitive golf market, the Shark Experience just might be the technological platform that helps one course stand out from its competition. “At the end of the day what we have here is not a product. What we have here is a platform – a forever evolving platform. Just like your device,” says Norman. “It’s a work in progress. It’s just going to keep developing. Just like your device, it’s going to get better and better. The ultimate goal for us is to enhance the golfer’s experience on the golf course.” Norman says he sees this new customizable platform as a way to keep golfers even more entertained and connected, no matter whether they’re a Baby Boomer, Millennial or Gen Z. Another way the platform can do that is through a seamless, cashless experience, from the course to the clubhouse. Users won’t have

FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM

to dig into their wallet for cash, instead using a card (with a shark on it, naturally) that can be used to order anything beers from the beverage cart, burgers at the turn, and post-round drinks back at the clubhouse bar. The idea is like being a “member for a day.” For me, I loved the wealth of music options, the cashless pay system and, from a play perspective, particularly the course flyovers and instant yardage details to see how to approach a particular hole at a course you don’t know and help pick which club to hit. The video options, whether it was watching news clips or sports highlights, wasn’t for me but I could envision its appeal, whether it’s newcomers to the game or during a wait on the tee box of a par-3 on a busy Saturday morning. So will this speed up or slow down play? The feedback from the two golf courses that have done more than 3,000 trial rounds is that it has no real impact on pace of play, good or bad. The other response – from users, course operators and managers – has been largely positive. “That feedback we’re getting is fueling our excitement,” says Norman. The program will pilot at the 2018 PGA Show in January and roll out gradually next year. How popular it will be with golfers remains to be seen, but the platform will only continue to evolve, with features such as hole-in-one technology, remote food and beverage ordering, and Shot Tracer in the plans. “I always get asked, ‘Would I have enjoyed this if I was 30 years younger?’” says the 62-year-old Norman. “I would have embraced this. I can do as much as I want or as little as I want.”

Saddlebrook Resort In the early portion of 2015, Saddlebrook Resort embarked on a restorative mission for its two Arnold Palmer Signature courses as well as the resort’s practice and training facility.

COURTESY SADDLEBROOK RESORT

New maintenance equipment was purchased, irrigation systems replaced and new agronomy practices were implemented. Most greens were reconstructed with several greens on the Saddlebrook course moved away from the encroaching but protected woodlands. All bunkers on both courses were rebuilt as was the Golf Training Center, Designed by Mike Angus, golf architect for the Phil Mickelson Golf Course Design Company. The Training Center encompasses every element of the game for Resort guests, visitors, club members, students and touring professionals who will find valuable golf play in this multi-faceted training facility. Golfers can train with one of our professionals or score themselves while rotating through the practice stations. The resort added a Golf Learning Studio, featuring an indoor hitting bay and the most advanced video swing analysis software available. TrackMan™ uses sophisticated data on moment of impact; Sam BalanceLab, measures motion and weight transfer with a high caliber sensor; and Sam PuttLab, diagnoses the ball’s roll with an ultrasound radar tracking system. You can also step

up your short game on the Scoring Zone green with bunkers and multiple chipping areas. The Lesson Tee is designed to improve each player’s complete game with practice shots to multiple target greens, while specially designed mounds help players practice every type of uphill and downhill shot. With these major projects completed by the end of 2016, Saddlebrook Resort began moving into the next phase of the restorative process by creating and marketing new Stay-nPlay, Tournament Outing and Golf Academy programs to Members and guests. In addition to the improvements on the courses , practice facilities and a new fleet of carts arriving in February 2018, Saddlebrook Resort continues to upgrade the resorts lodging units, amenities and the restaurants which offer both fine and casual award-wining dining served by our signature hospitality. Whether you are entertaining executives at Dempsey’s Steak House or enjoying a post-game lunch while overlooking the Superpool, our options are sure to delight every palate. Unique among Tampa Bay hotels and resorts, Saddlebrook’s Sports Village provides an array of activities and fitness options for individuals as well as groups. This dynamic complex features two adjacent fitness centers that total over 6,000 sq. ft., one sand and two grass volleyball courts, a regulation-size basketball court and a FieldTurf training training field. The resort also boasts three swimming pools, including the Superpool, a half-million gallon free-form pool with two volleyball nets, FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM

basketball hoops, and training lanes. We also invite you to rejuvenate your senses at the Saddlebrook Spa. Our luxurious European-style Spa features a full menu of body treatments, massages, hydro-tub, facials and salon services, as well as outdoor dining. When it comes to recreation, Saddlebrook Resort caters to every taste and skill level. Tee off on two Arnold Palmer signature golf courses, or perfect your swing at the Golf Training Center and Range, designed to train PGA professionals, adult and junior golfers. Our championship tennis complex features 45 courts including all four Grand Slam surfaces, with lighted courts for night play. The world-renowned Harry Hopman Tennis Program is also on-site, and players instantly join the ranks of such superstars as Jack Sock and John Isner, who call Saddlebrook Resort their preferred training center. Saddlebrook Resort, located just 30-minutes from Tampa International Airport provides a wide array of options for guests. The resort’s 540 accommodations with a total of 800 bedrooms showcase an inviting rich tropical design, and are clustered around nine serene courtyards complete with gardens, stone benches, stone paver walkways, and native lush Florida landscaping. The Best of Central Florida With more than its share of good golf course – and quite a few great ones – fantastic golf opportunities abound throughout Central Florida’s Polk County. Home to more than 40 public access courses offering nearly 700 holes of golf, Central Florida’s Polk County boasts one of the top collections of golf course in the United States, making it easy for golfers of all abilities to find a course that suits their game. Many of golf ’s top designers – names like Donald Ross, Bill Coore/Ben Crenshw, Tom Doak and now, Gil Hanse – have left their mark on the region, providing a wide variety of course design styles, from spectacular resort layouts and undulating link-style courses to, in Hanse’s case, a vast reimaging of the size and scope of a golf course with Streamsong Black, nearly twice the size of your average course. VARIETY OF COURSE DESIGNS With so many course offerings it is very difficult to pick a favorite, but when it comes to distinctive course design, the conversation begins with Central Florida’s championship golf courses, Streamsong Resort’s Red, Blue and Black. Built upon reclaimed phosphate mining land,

designed by Gil Hanse, is a 300 acre, par-73 expanse featuring dramatic, wide-open wavy dunes and hidden greens. All of Streamsong’s Courses trade palm trees, manicured flower beds, beach sand bunkers and house lined fairways for towering sand dunes, native grasses and sweeping vistas. Golf publications worldwide continue to recognize Streamsong as some of the most spectacular golf holes in the Southeastern United States. Golf Magazine ranked both the Red and Blue courses in the top-15 courses you can play for 2016-2017, while the Black Course named “2017’s Best New Course” by the same publication. Not to be forgotten is Southern Dunes Golf & Country Club. This course stretches out to more than 7,200 yards from the championship tees and its demanding layout features high ornamental grasses and decorative plantings, paired with 180 distinctively colored bunkers, providing spectacular visual appeal throughout your round of golf. Southern Dunes challenges golfers with more than 100 feet of elevation change, rolling fairways and large undulating greens that will greatly impact a golfer’s club selection.

Streamsong® Black

Streamsong Resort’s courses are atypical of most Florida golf courses. Both Streamsong’s Red Course, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, and Blue Course, designed by Tom Doak, utilize natural contours, sand dunes and native grasses to offer a golf experience that is reminiscent of the links-style courses of the British Isles. Meanwhile, the Black Course,

The Club at Eaglebrooke provides a challenging, but fair test of golf for players of all ability levels. Oak trees, numerous lakes and strategically placed mounding define the lush rolling fairways and visually frame each hole as from the tee. Once you reach the fairway a premium is placed on your approach shot as Eaglebrooke features large undulating greens, FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM

many of which are well guarded by bunkers and waste areas. FLORIDA HISTORIC GOLF TRAIL Golf courses in Florida have been celebrated for a variety of reasons from the stern test they provide PGA and LPGA Tour players to their stunning beauty, now many Florida golf courses are being celebrated for their history. Dating back to the 1890’s, as the state experienced the development of railroads and hotels, golf courses began to be built for those vacationing in the Florida Sunshine. To help enhance the awareness and increase the appreciation for Florida’s historic golf courses the Florida Department of State has recognized 51 public-access golf courses that were built prior to 1930 to be designated on Florida’s Historic Golf Trail. Polk County is home to four historic courses designated on the list, more than any other Florida county, including Bartow Golf Course (1926), Cleveland Heights Golf Course (1925), Wedgewood Golf Club (1929) and Lekarica Hills Golf Course (1927). STUNNING SCENERY Golfer’s will not only appreciate the area’s variety of course design styles, but also marvel at Central Florida’s natural beauty throughout their round. When compared to other flatland areas in Florida, Polk County’s topography makes the area unique, and provided the game’s top course architects a very diverse foundation upon which to build their course designs. Boasting some of the highest points on peninsular Florida, courses throughout the region utilize the natural elevation changes and land contours, to provide a golf experience more akin to courses located in the northern states. Courses are defined by natural wetlands, marshes and many of the area’s lakes, while centuries old oaks, native palms and pine forests frame the fairways. Wildlife is plentiful and you may find that deer, bald eagles, foxes, osprey and sandhill cranes provide the perfect visual distractions during your round. With great year-round weather, unparalleled natural beauty and a diverse collection of courses that will accommodate golfers of all abilities and budgets, Central Florida’s Polk County provides the perfect destination for a great golf getaway. No matter what type of golf experience you are seeking, you are sure to find that the area’s courses will surely make your golf vacation a memorable one. To plan the perfect golf getaway and for the most complete information on all of Polk County’s attractions, hotels, restaurants and golf courses please visit www.VisitCentralFlorida.org

DAYTONA BEACH

Driving Great Golf WHEN PEOPLE THINK OF DAYTONA BEACH, their minds naturally turn to the DAYTONA 500 and the World’s Most Famous Beach, iconic attractions that have made the area an international travel destination. While speed and surf will continue to be the headliners, savvy golfers have come to see Daytona Beach as a destination that offers everything a discerning group is looking for. The most important factors in a successful golf trip are quality courses, varied accommodations, and the ability to have a good time after the final putt drops, and Daytona Beach delivers on all accounts. The area is also home to a climate that is as golf trip-friendly as any in America from October through May. The summer heat recedes and the average high temperatures from fall through spring are: 82 degrees in October, 76 in November, 70 in December, 68 in January, 71 in February, 74 in March, 70 in April, and 85 in May. Those are temperatures golfers, particularly those above the Mason-Dixon line, dream of after the harsh reality of winter sets in. A trip to the area is easy as Daytona Beach International Airport offers nonstop flights from New York City (JetBlue), Atlanta (Delta) and Charlotte (American Airlines). Combine the flight service with easy access off Interstate 95 and Interstate 4, and the area is as accessible as it is enjoyable. “The courses were some of the best I have played in a very long time” Golf course options are a driving force behind every trip and the Daytona Beach area, home to more than 20 layouts, has a thriving golf scene. LPGA International, home of the acclaimed Jones and Hills courses, is the area’s most high-profile facility. LPGA International has challenged the world’s best women’s golfers - World Golf Hall of Famer Karrie Webb has celebrated a pair of victories on the Jones Course - and annually hosts collegiate national championships and the finals of the Symetra Tour Qualifying School. After the installation of new greens on the Jones Course in the summer of 2017, the layout is in pristine condition, providing golfers near perfect putting surfaces to accompany a design that has been ranked among the best in the state. The Hills Course is every bit as good as the Jones, challenging players with fairways lined by beautiful magnolia trees and native pines, an experience that occasionally stirs echoes of

Pinehurst. Both courses are 4-star layouts, according to Golf Digest, but they are hardly alone in delivering an outstanding experience. Halifax Plantation, which plays through centuries-old live oak trees and is one of the area’s prettiest courses, is another 4-star caliber design that has earned rave reviews. Spruce Creek Country Club is built around one of the world’s largest private airports, giving new meaning to the term “flyer” on a layout that places a premium on playability and quality conditioning. Venetian Bay Golf Club is yet another 4-star facility that offers a diversity of challenges. Golfers play through tree-lined fairways on the opening nine before facing an open, linksstyle design after the turn. Victoria Hills, a semi-private Ron Garl design, is one of Central Florida’s best kept secrets, rewarding golfers that make the trip to nearby DeLand with a creative layout that plays through expansive oak trees and Augusta pines. “The courses were some of the best I have played in a very long time,” said Aaron Boyd of Tourico Holidays, a company that organizes international golf trips. “[They were] very beautiful courses with unique designs. I couldn’t have asked for a better golfing trip and I will be out soon to play again.” Daytona Beach’s quality is complemented by its proximity to the rest of Central Florida’s golf offerings, including several PGA Tour stops, expanding the universe of courses visitors have access to. STAY-AND-PLAY Make no mistake, golf courses are the most important consideration in any trip, but where a group stays matters. Daytona Beach hosts millions of visitors each year and the rooms – ranging from oceanfront to riverfront and everything in between – that host family vacations during the summer months are perfect for golfers throughout the rest of the year. Multiple bedroom units with modern kitchens and living rooms, many of them overlooking Daytona Beach’s famed beach, provide idyllic housing. Golfers can gather and continue the banter and camaraderie that lies at the heart of so many trips long into the night. aBest of all, what helps Daytona Beach deliver value is the area’s ability to package golf and accommodations into one deal. Daytona Beach provides countless golf package offerFLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM

ings, which maximize value and convenience, allowing players to customize trips to fit their budget and preferences. THE FUN NEVER STOPS The most underrated aspect of a great golf destination lies in what it delivers off the course, and Daytona Beach has few peers in that regard, guaranteeing that the good times continue long after the scorecards are signed. Many golfers will race from the fairways to Daytona International Speedway to enjoy a tour of the world’s only motorsports stadium and Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. Have a need for speed? The NASCAR Racing Experience puts you behind the wheel of a stock car to drive around the famed 2.5-mile track. Participants receive training and instruction and meet with their crew chief before heading out for a racing session that gets the adrenaline pumping like few other activities. To answer the most frequently asked question, yes, passing is allowed during the eight-lap race. If driving into turns with a 31-degree banking at 150 miles per hour isn’t for you, a trip to Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, a leisurely drive on the beach, or the chance to watch future baseball stars at historic Jackie Robinson Ballpark might be. FROM THE GOLF TRAIL TO THE ALE TRAIL The Daytona Beach area is also home to a thriving craft beer scene, meaning golfers are never more than a short chip shot from a quality, local brew. Any group in search of a cold drink will enjoy the Daytona Beach Ale Trail, a collection of 19 breweries and taprooms that offer a broad selection of craft beer, including outstanding local offerings. Any group that wants to pair a stop along on the Daytona Beach Ale Trail with an outstanding meal will appreciate the quality and diversity of Daytona Beach’s restaurant offerings, which feature everything from ocean views and fresh seafood to premium steakhouses. Daytona Beach provides quality courses, a range of accommodations offerings, beautiful weather, a good time and value. These factors, when taken together, help bring golfers back year after year. There’s nothing better than discovering a new course that challenges you, offers gorgeous scenery and leaves you coming back for more. Florida’s Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach area gives you more than 20 courses offering great year-round play, with two ranked at 4 ½ stars by Golf Digest. Take in scenic, natural backdrops, with three area courses Audubon-certified. Courses are some of the most accessible in the state, with a higher percentage of tracks open to public play than most anywhere else. And players also appreciate the value. You’ll find great courses, accommodations, dining and more at great prices all year round. It’s no wonder the area was ranked the “3rd Best Place in the Country to Live and Play Golf” by Golf Digest.

The Charlotte Harbor Gulf Island Coast, a charming, laid-back destination nestled between Sarasota and Fort Myers on the gulf coast, features an array of quality courses allowing any golf aficionado to experience some of the best golf Florida has to offer. Golf Digest has ranked the area as “3rd Best Place in the Country to Live and Play Golf.” Although Florida’s terrain is relatively flat, Southwest Florida is home to many different types of ecosystems providing the aesthetic appeal and natural obstacles necessary to enhance and challenge a player’s experience. One can choose an itinerary of courses to include heavily wooded terrain, salt marshes, and wetlands, as well as Audubon certified courses teeming with a variety of native wildlife. This diverse pool of courses also features two 4 ½ star courses, including Riverwood Golf Club, which Golfweek Magazine ranked as the #15 best course in the state of Florida in May 2012. Whether taking a golf vacation with the guys or gals or simply playing a couple rounds during a family vacation, it doesn’t need to be stressful or cost a fortune. In fact, the area was named the U.S. Best Value Destination in 2014 by trivago. According to the world’s largest online hotel search site, the destination offers “the biggest bang for your buck on vacation.” Adding to the value, virtually every course in Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach is open to the public year-round and greens fees (with a cart) in peak season average approximately $55 per round with summer and fall rates even lower. Find adventure off the greens, too. Aquatic adventures beckon with

nearly 200 miles of Blueway Trails ideal for kayaking, canoeing and standup paddle boarding. Charlotte Harbor has been named one of the top 10 places to sail by SAIL Magazine and the area is known for its world-class fishing with deep sea and back bay angling opportunities. For a true adrenaline rush, fish for silver king in the Tarpon Capital of the World. Speaking of water, soak up the sun and beachcomb on some of the 12 miles of Gulf of Mexico beaches, or, island hop without a passport. Five barrier islands hug the coast with some only accessible by boat offering a true natural Florida adventure. On land, take advantage of the City of Punta Gorda’s free bicycle loaner program. Peddle away on either one of the four bicycle routes, which range from 17 to 31 miles, or

FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM

ride the 18-mile Punta Gorda Pathways which circles the city and includes a ride along the tranquil Peace River. Along this ride, stop at the Punta Gorda Outdoor Fitness Zone to tone up your muscles on this free, outdoor gym equipment. The dining scene in Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands is an eclectic mix of seafood shacks, sidewalk cafes, waterfront eateries, fine dining and sweet spots. Primary dining districts include downtown Punta Gorda, Fishermen’s Village, Manasota Key and Englewood’s Dearborn Street. Familiar chain restaurants are bountiful, too. Whatever the craving and occasion, there’s a restaurant satisfying every taste bud. Plan your Southwest Florida golf vacation by visiting PureFlorida.com.

Around here, every round is an experience par excellence. Love, Paradise.

ParadiseCoastGolfing.com

Tee Off a Golf Adventure to Remember on Florida’s Paradise Coast.

COURTSEY FLORIDA’S PARADISE COAST

TRUE GOLF LOVERS LOOK FOR THE FINEST GREENS, most challenging holes and best weather for their golf getaways. But when it comes to finding the perfect golf paradise, there’s only one place to tee it up: Naples, Marco Island and the Everglades on Florida’s Paradise Coast. Located on the Gulf of Mexico two hours from Miami and just three and a half hours from Orlando, Flori-da’s Paradise Coast is the perfect destination to enjoy thrilling golf and the best of Florida’s natural beauty. The hardest part of the entire trip is deciding which golf courses to play. And with more golf holes per cap-ita in the US, it’s not an easy decision. Many of the courses have been designed by legends like Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Greg Norman. Regardless of your handicap, you’ll find courses that challenge and inspire you. Not only is the area home to breathtaking courses, it’s also the site of multiple professional golf events throughout the year. The best of the LPGA compete at the CME Group Tour in mid-November. The annu-al QBE Shootout is at the Tiburón Golf Club in early December, featuring 24 professionals paired into 12 two-person teams, hosted by World Golf Hall-of-Famer Greg Norman. Then, in February is the Champi-ons Tour Chubb Classic, which takes place at the TwinEagles Club in Naples. When your round is over, move from lush greens to luxurious comfort. With a wide variety of accom-modations including resorts, boutique hotels, cozy bed & breakfasts and vacation homes, you’ll find the right level of amenities and features to suit your needs. And if you don’t want to waste any time away from the links (even to sleep), the area has numerous golf resorts to keep you close to the action. Some of these resorts include the La Playa Beach & Golf Resort; the J. W. Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort; Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club; the Naples Grande; and the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples. While most of your golf trip will be filled with rolling greens and challenging links, do not miss the rest of Paradise. For unique eco-experiences, there’s no Florida destination more iconic than the world-famous Everglades. It’s the only subtropical preserve in North America and it’s yours to explore with a guided tour by kayak, canoe or airboat. If you’d

rather hike and spot wildlife. You can discover hundreds of bird species (including bald eagles, brown pelicans, roseate spoonbills, white ibises, great blue herons, green herons, snowy egrets, red-shouldered hawks and ospreys), plus manatees, alligators and other animals found in Florida and the Everglades. When you’ve worked up an appetite, Florida’s Paradise Coast offers one of the best dining scenes in the country. Taste world-class cuisine like seasonal stone crab, fresh-caught seafood and local Florida produce at awarding-winning restaurants. Toast the day’s low rounds with a local of craft beer or cocktails at eclectic bars. With local brews from Naples Beach Brewery, Riptide Brewing Company, Bone Hook Brewing, Marco Island Brewery and Oil Well Craft Beer, you’re sure to find one you’ll love. If you’re hungrier for culture than food, Paradise has you covered. Visit one of the many area art galleries, museums and historic sites. Or indulge in a show at performing arts centers like Artis—Naples, Naples Players or Gulfshore Playhouse. And if you need to bring home gifts or souvenirs, be sure to check out the latest fashions, gadgets and more when you shop in Naples and Marco Island at locations like 5th Avenue South, 3rd Street South, Venetian Village, Waterside Shops Mercato or Miromar Outlets. No trip to Florida’s Paradise Coast is ever complete without a beach day or two. Enjoy miles of uncrowded white sands and turquoise Gulf waters in Naples and Marco Island. Whether you prefer to relax and soak up the warm sunshine or get out in the water for swimming, paddle boarding or on a personal watercraft, you’ll discover why these beaches are constantly ranked among the best in the country. Best of all, with the year-round excellent weather, it’s always the ideal season to visit. Come fall in love with Paradise and play where the pros play when you explore the world-class adventure of a golf getaway in Naples, Marco Island and the Everglades.

The Action is in the Outfield at Florida Spring Training Baseball Parks BY NICK GANDY, FLORIDA SPORTS FOUNDATION

I

n our youth, many of us felt the sting of being relegated to the outfield, where players of lesser talent were stashed in an effort to hide the lack of talent. As adults visiting Florida Spring Training Baseball games, the outfield is a happening place where fans are flocking to take advantage of the latest amenities for visitors to the Sunshine State during the month of March. Since Spectrum Field, spring training home of the Philadelphia Phillies since 2004, completed construction of a new stadium with a 360 degree boardwalk around the field and Frenchy’s Tiki Pavilion in leftfield, many others have followed suit. “We were the first in Florida to make an entire loop around the field with a raised concourse,” said John Timberlake, the Phillies Director of Florida Operations. “We wanted something that spoke Florida and thought why not a tiki bar.” The tiki bar and the area between the left field fence and the bar has seating for approximately 100 fans and offers a view of Phillies pitchers warming up in the bullpen as well as the onfield action. Another unique aspect of the tiki bar pavilion is it stays open post-game for two hours with live music after every spring training game. “We could not have envisioned the success we’ve had,” Timberlake added. “It has become a post-game destination during spring training baseball. There have been 700-800 people out there after some games. Now with all of the public transportation and car services available folks are staying afterward and using it to get back out to the beach after having a beverage.” When the Tampa Bay Rays moved their spring training home to the Charlotte Sports Park in 2009, the renovations included the ability to walk completely around the ballpark while making a stop at a leftfield tiki bar. Other parks like Ed Smith Stadium, in Sarasota, and Jet Blue Park, in Fort Myers don’t have the ability to circle the field on foot, but there are attractive amenities in the outfield. The left field pavilion at Ed Smith Stadium features table top seating and Jet Blue Park has the same atop the Green Monster and the screened Green Monster deck below. Others to add a wrap around concourse in their renovations since 2010 include the Pittsburgh Pirates, in Bradenton, the Minnesota Twins, in Fort Myers, the New York Yankees, in Tampa and the Detroit Tigers, in Lakeland. “The game has changed over 25 years,” said Bill Smith, the General Manager of the Minnesota Twins from 2007-2011 and who was instrumental in planning the recent renovations at Hammond

70

\\

Stadium, in Fort Myers. “Back then, people would buy a ticket, get a hot dog, sit in their seats and watch the game. Now people want to move around the ballpark and see the game from different angles. Being able to move around Jet Blue Park takes on a new meaning, when fans climb the steps to take one of the 258 seats inside the Green Monster. Fans sitting on top of the Green Monster will

FLORIDAGOLFINFO.COM

definitely need a hat and an abundance of sunscreen for the 1:05 p.m. games in Fort Myers. Following renovations to Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, fans can enjoy a newly enhanced Right Field Pavilion, allowing fans to take in the game with the comfort and shade of a beachside bar. At Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, a walk from rightfield to left field while watching the Tigers offers some distinctly different fan amenities. The right field side has rocking chairs and giant checkerboards for tables. The left field side features the Berm Bar, directly under the new scoreboard. It offers a 120-foot drink rail with waitress service in oversized beach cabana chairs. In front of the chairs and drink rail is grass berm seating. It’s the perfect place to catch a home run ball off the bat of a right handed hitter. It’s a brand new world of outfield seating and game viewing options at Florida Spring Training parks and spending an afternoon in the outfield takes on a different meaning. The Wonderful ‘New’ Palmer Course at PGA National The home of the PGA TOUR’s Honda Classic and former Ryder Cup venue – announces its newly renovated Palmer Course reopened for play in November 2017.

\\

Fittingly named after its original designer and the game’s greatest legend, Arnold Palmer, the course changes were executed in consultation with the Arnold Palmer Design Company. In 1984, with Arnie’s Army cheering like mad on his every shot, Palmer captured the PGA Seniors Championship played on the legendary resort’s mighty Champion Course. The great Arnold Palmer and PGA Na-

tional Resort & Spa made for quite a winning combination. In 1984, with Arnie’s Army cheering like mad on his every shot, he captured the PGA Seniors Championship played on the legendary resort’s mighty Champion Course. In addition to hoisting the winner’s trophy, Palmer was also finalizing plans for a new course design at PGA National that would open a few months down the road –

the greens. The bunkers now possess dramatic visual character with sharp edges outlining the hazards and new glistening G-Angle Sand. The stunning look frames the holes brilliantly. Also, all 18 fairways were re-turfed with scientifically-advanced Celebration grass – a deep blue-green bermudagrass that has finished best in numerous university research studies for wear tolerance, recovery and drought resistance that insures prime playing conditions year-round. All the greens were re-built and regrassed to honor the shape and contours of Palmer’s original design. The renovation has added over half-an-acre to the total square-footage of the putting surfaces thus allowing for additional pin placements for both tournaments and everyday play. Multiple tee-boxes on all 18 holes were added to create greater playability. Providing even more eye candy, the waste areas have undergone a complete overhaul with the addition of fresh, natural-colored Coquina creating an appealing contrast to the new

The General. After “The King” oversaw a series of changes to the layout in 2006 that included lengthening the course to over 7,000 yards from the back tees and adding player-friendly forward tees, the 18 was fittingly renamed “The Palmer” to honor the game’s greatest legend. Long known as a thrilling shot-maker’s course and perfect complement to The Champion, the layout has gone through a comprehensive revitalization from tee to green this year that now makes Palmer’s creation even more fun to play. Just like The Champion with its famous Bear Trap, The Palmer is a “must play.” Executed in consultation with The Palmer Design team, the recent changes do a wonderful job of maintaining the core principals of the original design with a fresh architectural feel to meet the demands of the modern game. Most every aspect has been enhanced. Perhaps most notably, golfers will discover all 62 bunkers throughout have been modernized and reshaped to improve sight lines off the tee as well as on approach shots into

sand in the bunkers and vibrant turf on the fairways. “The overall goal was to build upon core principals of the original design while taking advantage of the opportunity to make key agronomic, strategic and aesthetic improvements to the course,” says Brandon Johnson, vice president and senior golf course architect of the Arnold Palmer Design Company. “The changes will meet the demands of the modern game and subtly reflect how our company’s design philosophy has evolved since originally opening the course in 1984.” “It was wonderful to work closely with Brandon and his team from the Arnold Palmer Design Company,” says Brad Nelson, PGA National’s director of agronomy. “Our members and guests are going to love the changes to The Palmer as a great course is now even better.” The “new” Palmer Course ensures the legend of The King will grow nothing but stronger for years to come at PGA National.
