PGA Golf Club THERE’S AN UNDENIABLE BUZZ surrounding PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie. The PGA of America’s flagship property is in the midst of a new era as enhancements and renovations have the club in the best shape ever. The Dye Course – designed by the game’s most creative architect, Pete Dye – recently re-opened following a complete re-grassing project. Celebration Bermuda was installed on the fairways while all 18 greens were expanded to original sizes and re-grassed with smooth-rolling, Tifeagle Ultra’dwarf Bermuda. In addition, fresh sand was added to bunkers and several bunker faces were refined and re-sodded. Members and guests are raving about the course’s tournament-level conditioning. “The Dye Course is in the best shape since it opened,” says Jimmy Terry, PGA Senior General Manager. “Led by Head Superintendent Dick Gray, the project has restored the entertaining layout to Pete Dye’s original vision and intent.” The re-grassing initiative came on the heels of another successful course renovation; the touted Wanamaker Course re-opened in late 2015 following similar enhancements. As a result, the Tom Fazio-design jumped five spots to No. 16 in Golfweek’s 2016 “Best: State-byState Courses You Can Play” list; the Dye Course – currently ranked No. 27 – will surely follow suit making PGA Golf Club one of only a handful of properties with two courses on the impressive list. Two other unique courses are available at PGA Golf Club. The Ryder Course, also designed by Tom Fazio, presents a Carolinas-feel with rolling hills, majestic pines and several water hazards. The nearby St. Lucie Trail Golf Club, originally designed by Jim Fazio and revitalized by Gray in 2014, is a shorter and tighter layout that rewards club selection and accuracy. Adding to the energized atmosphere at PGA Golf Club is the modernized, 20,000 square-foot clubhouse. The Tom-Hoch design features contemporary elements of style throughout the building to reflect the PGA of America’s rich history. The PGA relocated some notable trophies and artifacts that trace its 100-year history to the new “PGA Gallery,” an on-site museum. Highlighting the displays are replicas of the major Championship trophies including the original Wanamaker Tro-
phy. Marcus Pointe Country Club is located on 600 acres of picturesque woodlands, and has been named a “great value” by Golf Digest subscribers. This 18 -hole course features five sets of tees and subtle challenges, making it highly enjoyable for the widest range of golfing skills. Osceola Municipal Golf Course is an 18-hole course open from daylight to dark, every day of the year except for Christmas Day. Newly renovated in 2011, their green fees average around $30, which includes a cart. Updates include a remodeled restaurant, complete with a new menu, along with the new construction of the practice-range area. A.C. Read, a picturesque course beneath live oaks on Bayou Grande, is open to all active and retired military. The course is on Naval Air Station Pensacola, and offers 27 championship holes with an additional 18-hole executive course. Perdido Bay Golf Club was named best new course by Golf Digest when it opened several years ago, and was the site of the Pensacola Open for 10 years The course offers overnight accommodations at Cottages on the Green. New maintenance equipment was purchased, irrigation systems replaced and new agronomy practices were implemented. Most greens were reconstructed with several greens on the Saddlebrook course moved away from the encroaching but protected woodlands. All bunkers on both courses were rebuilt as was the Golf Training Center, Designed by Mike Angus, golf architect for the Phil Mickelson Golf Course Design Company. The Training Center encompasses every element of the game for Resort guests, visitors, club members, students and touring professionals who will find valuable golf play in this multi-faceted training facility. The resort added a Golf Learning Studio, featuring an indoor hitting bay and the most advanced video swing analysis software available. DAY 1 - The Riv, The Speedway and The Ale Trail The perfect place to begin a Daytona Beach golf trip is Riviera Country Club, one of the area’s most storied and friendly courses. The Riv, as locals fondly call the layout, is home to America’s longest running mini-tour event, and the par 71 plays just 6,250 yards from the tips, providing an opportunity for golfers to post a good score on opening day. Players that hit the course’s crowned greens in the proper spots will have a chance to score, like former PGA Tour winners Bert Yancey and Morris Hatalsky did en route to winning the Riviera Open. Miss in the wrong spots and a frustrating round could await, but regardless of your score, a day spent at Riviera Country Club is a good one. “To put it bluntly, if every county had a golf facility like Riviera Country Club there would be a lot fewer complaints about golf ’s alleged decline,” Golf Channel’s Tim Gavrich wrote of the layout. “The course, owned since it opened in 1953 by the Meyers family, is practically everything an everyday, local-treasure golf course should be.” To enhance the experience, enjoy a postround lunch in the Riviera clubhouse, which is guaranteed to make your taste buds happy, and
it’s the perfect, understated complement to the course. Off the course: After you finish lunch at The Riv, head to Daytona International Speedway for a mid-afternoon tour of the World Center of Racing. The 2.5 mile tri-oval has to be experienced to be properly appreciated; seeing the banked turns in the Speedway’s corners will give you a new appreciation for Jimmy Johnson and his seven NASCAR titles. The tour takes people onto the track and Victory Lane before the checkered flag waves in the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, which chronicles the history of all of forms of motorsports in America. After concluding the Speedway tour, take a stroll or, better yet, a drive on the beach before heading to Daytona Taproom, a leading member of the Daytona Beach Ale Trail, for dinner. The setting is spare with 50 craft brews on tap, a concrete floor and a long, single table for seating, but it’s outstanding. Located on Seabreeze Boulevard, the Daytona Taproom is long on character and it might be home to the area’s best hamburger - the Tijuana Peso Girl, which comes with bacon, fried jalapenos, pepper jack cheese and a sriracha mayo. If you want to conclude the day with a little spice, it’s the perfect entree.

DAY 2 - All LPGA International After a good night’s sleep, it’s time to head to Daytona Beach’s signature golf facility, LPGA International, for 36 holes at two of Florida’s premier public layouts. Start with The Hills Course, which challenges with fairways lined by beautiful magnolia trees and native pines, providing an experience that occasionally stirs echoes of Pinehurst. With no parallel fairways and hardly any homes to speak of, the Hills Course is a 4.5-star design worthy of building a golf trip around. The layout stretches to 6,954 yards, but plays a much more manageable 6,255 yards from the white tees, which are the most commonly utilized. With several forced carries and tree lines that punish wayward drives, the first shot on a hole is often the most important. The course is always in immaculate condition, highlighted by greens that are as fast and true as any along the Central Florida coast. On a layout full of memorable holes, the par 5 eighth stands above. Playing from the white tees, water runs up the left side of the 508yard challenge. Long hitters will have the option of going for the green in two, but the putting surface sticks out in the water, meaning there is no room to miss. A round on the Hills Course will present risk-reward decisions, challenge various aspects of your game, and deliver the type of experience one would expect at a facility that has hosted some of the game’s greatest women’s players. Next up is Rees Jones’ acclaimed layout. A links style design, the Jones Course has five sets of tees that stretch from 5,131 yards to 7,088 yards, providing the appropriate level of challenge for players of all skill levels. Strategic mounding, expansive bunkers, natural marsh areas and lakes provide unforgettable visuals and have helped make the course one of Florida’s most popular. The Jones Course installed new TifEagle Bermuda greens in the summer of 2017 and the putting surfaces are among the state’s best. It’s worth mentioning that another of Daytona Beach’s many attributes is its appeal, as a destination, to men and women. The courses at LPGA International are strong enough to challenge the best men’s players - the property annually hosts numerous men’s collegiate events - and as the former host of the LPGA Titleholders event, the likes of Annika Sorenstam and Karrie Webb, a two-time champion, have tested their games in Daytona Beach. The destination’s appeal to women doesn’t end at LPGA International. Volusia County’s courses are designed for players of all skill levels, which has certainly enhanced the area’s popularity.
Off the course: After 36 holes of championship golf, your group should reward itself with a relaxing, upscale evening at one of the area’s best Italian restaurants - The Cellar. The award-winning restaurant, which makes everything from scratch, is located in historic downtown Daytona Beach in the basement of the former seasonal home of President Warren G. Harding. The house was built in 1907 by Harding’s father-in-law Amos H. Kling and is now on the National Historic Registry. With a wine list as good as any and a menu that combines traditional Italian favorites and creative new entrees, The Cellar serves a delectable meal. DAY 3 - Returning to Golf ’s Roots After challenging the modern masterpieces at LPGA International, a round at one of Daytona Beach’s two Donald Ross courses provides golfers a reminder of the area’s deep historical ties to the game. Ross, widely regarded as America’s most important golf course architect, designed Pinehurst No. 2, Oakland Hills, East Lake Golf Club and Seminole Golf Club, among many other high profile layouts, and he left his mark in Daytona Beach. The South Course at Daytona Beach Golf Club and New Smyrna Golf Club are both Ross designs and should be near the top of your must-play list. Both layouts, in addition to Riviera, are part of the Florida Historic Golf Trail and are a delight. Golfers won’t go wrong at either course, but an opportunity to play a Ross design is one that should be taken advantage of. Off the course: After concluding your final round at one of the area’s historic layouts, enjoy lunch at Racing’s North Turn, which sits on the exact location where racing history began in Daytona Beach. You will enjoy a stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean and can imagine what it was like when cars began speeding around the property in the late 1930s, planting the seeds for Daytona Beach’s growth into an auto racing mecca. After enjoying lunch, make the trip to Ponce Inlet Lighthouse. It will require 203 steps to scale Florida’s tallest lighthouse but the view from the top of Florida’s tallest lighthouse makes the effort worthwhile. It’s the perfect cap to a trip. The challenge golfers face is that a threeday trip merely scratches the surface when it comes to Daytona Beach’s offerings. Fittingly named after its original designer and the game’s greatest legend, Arnold Palmer, the course changes were executed in consultation with the Arnold Palmer Design Company. the greens. The bunkers now possess dramatic visual character with sharp edges outlining the hazards and new glistening G-Angle Sand. The stunning look frames the holes brilliantly. Also, all 18 fairways were re-turfed with scientifically-advanced Celebration grass – a deep blue-green bermudagrass that has finished best in numerous university research studies for wear tolerance, recovery and drought resistance that insures prime playing conditions year-round. All the greens were re-built and regrassed to honor the shape and contours of Palmer’s original design. The renovation has added over half-an-acre to the total square-footage of the putting surfaces thus allowing for additional pin placements for both tournaments and everyday play. Multiple tee-boxes on all 18 holes were added to create greater playability. Providing even more eye candy, the waste areas have undergone a complete overhaul with the addition of fresh, natural-colored Coquina creating an appealing contrast to the new

The General. After “The King” oversaw a series of changes to the layout in 2006 that included lengthening the course to over 7,000 yards from the back tees and adding player-friendly forward tees, the 18 was fittingly renamed “The Palmer” to honor the game’s greatest legend. Long known as a thrilling shot-maker’s course and perfect complement to The Champion, the layout has gone through a comprehensive revitalization from tee to green this year that now makes Palmer’s creation even more fun to play. Just like The Champion with its famous Bear Trap, The Palmer is a “must play.” Executed in consultation with The Palmer Design team, the recent changes do a wonderful job of maintaining the core principals of the original design with a fresh architectural feel to meet the demands of the modern game. Most every aspect has been enhanced. Perhaps most notably, golfers will discover all 62 bunkers throughout have been modernized and reshaped to improve sight lines off the tee as well as on approach shots into

sand in the bunkers and vibrant turf on the fairways. “The overall goal was to build upon core principals of the original design while taking advantage of the opportunity to make key agronomic, strategic and aesthetic improvements to the course,” says Brandon Johnson, vice president and senior golf course architect of the Arnold Palmer Design Company. “The changes will meet the demands of the modern game and subtly reflect how our company’s design philosophy has evolved since originally opening the course in 1984.” “It was wonderful to work closely with Brandon and his team from the Arnold Palmer Design Company,” says Brad Nelson, PGA National’s director of agronomy. “Our members and guests are going to love the changes to The Palmer as a great course is now even better.” The “new” Palmer Course ensures the legend of The King will grow nothing but stronger for years to come at PGA National.
