STUDY ABROAD MYTHS
Study abroad participants must speak another language.
Studying abroad is not relevant to my future career.
Students are NOT required to speak a second language to study abroad. Most programs offer English-taught courses even in non-English speaking countries.
Employers are increasingly realizing the value of candidates with the maturity, flexibility, and inter-cultural competence developed during studying abroad. In our global economy, international experience will help students be competitive in the job market.
Study abroad is not affordable. Many programs are similar in cost to a semester at SVSU. Some programs are more affordable while others are considerably more expensive. Financial aid, scholarships, loans, and grants can help cover the cost of study abroad programs.
Studying abroad will delay my graduation.
Study abroad is not for non-traditional students. OGE is committed to helping students find a program that accommodates time constraints and family/professional obligations. Many non-traditional students choose to participate in faculty-led programs, which range from two to three weeks in duration.
Careful program and course selection allow a student to stay on track with degree progress. Students should talk to their study abroad advisor and an academic advisor about making an academic plan.
WORDS OF WISDOM Renee Okenka
Senior, BA – English Japan, Spring & Summer 2017: Shikoku University “I think that everyone should study abroad at least once, even if it’s just for a few weeks. It’s not a small world, it’s actually quite large; the different cultures and sceneries that it contains are all unique and beautiful and I believe that everyone would benefit by learning and exploring in a new corner of the Earth.“

Saginaw Valley State University • 2015 - 2016
Cassidy Spendlove
Senior, BA – Art Italy, Spring 2017: Faculty-Led “I made countless memories and some new friends! I would definitely suggest studying abroad to anyone because it will be the trip of a lifetime no matter where you go and you won’t always have opportunities like these! Don’t be afraid to try something totally new and crazy because I promise you’ll end up loving it and really growing as a person, especially in your college years!”
CHOOSING A PROGRAM There are a number of program features to consider when browsing through program options. Although students are responsible for choosing their study abroad program, staff and peer advisors are available to offer guidance. Visit SVSU Study Abroad for an advising session. Appointments recommended.
To help narrow things down, consider what the program package offers, based on: • Program Type • Destination • Language of Instruction • Housing Options • Excursions • Academic Fit • Service-Learning Opportunities • Internship Opportunities
DeQuan Hill
Senior, BA – Communication The Netherlands, Spring Break 2017: Faculty-Led “Studying abroad means getting outside of your comfort zone and understanding how other cultures operate. Students should study abroad because it’s a once in a lifetime experience. College is a pivotal moment in the foundation of young professionals and there is no better time to expand your horizons than Saginaw Valley now. Go forState it!“University • svsu.edu/studyabroad
6
Emma Hondzinski
Senior, BBA – Marketing Spain, Winter 2017: ISA “Studying abroad is hands-down the best decision you will make in your college career. Even if it’s for a week or a whole semester, studying abroad will allow you to see the world in a new perspective. I learned to be extremely independent, responsible, and open-minded. The skills I learned while studying abroad will transfer to my professional life and future career. Studying abroad was the best experience of my life. I would recommend studying abroad to anyone and everyone. You will fall in love with a new country, city, and culture!”
WORDS OF Nancy Haddad
Sophomore, BA – Communication Greece, Summer 2017: Athena “Going abroad allowed for so much personal growth. I feel like the bubble I have grown up in has been popped and I can really open my mind and my heart to the multitude of differences that surround me. I was also able to learn how to be more independent by traveling alone and figuring out life in a different country with all new people. It has taught me that I’ll be fine on my own!”
7
Hannah Doederlein
Junior, BS – Biology Ghana, Spring 2017: USAC
“I encourage other students to study abroad if they want to challenge themselves. It may not be easy to leave all that you know behind to explore a new country full of unknowns, but it is well worth it. The growth and learning that you will be able to experience will help shape you as a more understanding, knowledgeable, and empathetic human being.“
WISDOM
Lindsey Weber
Senior BSN – Nursing Ireland, Spring Break 2017: Faculty-Led “The benefits of study abroad are endless! Personally, I believe it provides an opportunity to travel to another country to broaden one’s cultural insight. There are multiple scholarships available which makes the opportunity seem more realistic. It is an opportunity I would suggest to anyone who wants to experience a new culture and discover new things and interests in themselves!”
8
ACADEMICS ABROAD OGE encourages and recommends that students talk to their academic advisor and study abroad advisor about how study abroad fits into their academic plan. Students should not limit themselves to English-speaking destinations! Most programs offer courses taught in English even in countries where English is not the primary language.
SVSU Faculty-Led Programs
What requirements can I fulfill abroad?

FUNDING STUDY ABROAD
How do I fund my program? Students typically fund study abroad through a combination of financial aid, scholarships, grants, loans, and personal funds. Study abroad costs vary depending on the program a student selects. While some programs are more expensive, the majority of programs are similar to what you would spend at SVSU and some may even be less. With research and early planning, study abroad can be affordable. For detailed information about program costs, visit svsu.edu/studyabroad. Students can use their SVSU financial aid award toward the cost of a study abroad program. Please contact your study abroad advisor or financial aid for more information.

Student teaching abroad offers SVSU student teachers the option of adding a cross-cultural learning and teaching experience to their resumé. Student teachers typically spend the first eight weeks of teaching in Michigan and the second eight weeks at an English-medium school abroad.
STUDENT TEACHING ABROAD
You can choose placement in the following countries:
37
INDIA
Student Teaching Placement In English-speaking countries, you can expect to teach classes in your licensing areas (elementary education, secondary mathematics, visual arts, and so on). In non-English speaking countries, your focus will be working with your school’s foreign language teachers to provide instruction in conversational and written English. If you happen to be fluent in your host country’s native language, you may have the opportunity to teach classes in your licensing area. Most participating schools, however, value the program because they want to expose students to native English speakers.
