SVSU SCHOOL/UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIP OFFICE

Letter from the Director

On behalf of the School/University Partnership Office (SUPO) at Saginaw Valley State University, we present our 2015-16 Annual Report publication. This annual report is not just a compilation of data, it is also the story of each school, comprised of great children, educated and led by great people. We are proud to be a partner in this legacy and look forward to providing continuing support for our academies….

“student success is our passion!” In 2015 our office celebrated 20 years as an authorizer in the State of Michigan. We currently serve more than 11,200 students in 18 academies across the state. Our mission remains the same: to ensure high academic achievement for all our public school academy students. As we continue to evolve, we will remain responsive to our academies’ needs in order to ensure that they continue to foster a culture of learning and success. Oversight is a vast responsibility that we at the Partnership Office take very seriously. Our goal is that any form of support that we provide will ultimately effect student achievement in ways that show gains in student learning. Support ranges from continual evaluation of academy performance, providing teachers and school leaders with research-based and prescriptive

professional development, to offering school board training and guidance. We are committed to make our authorized academies the best option for the families within the communities they serve. SUPO has a long tradition of offering college scholarships to students, leaders and teachers, thereby reducing barriers to make learning more accessible. Teachers and building leaders are able to enhance their knowledge base in ways that positively impact student achievement. For students, these scholarships can be the key to making college a reality while preparing them to become part of an educated workforce. We thank you for taking the time to read our report and see the great things our academies are accomplishing! Their success is truly our passion! Sincerely,

Dave Lewis, Director School/University Partnership Office Saginaw Valley State University

Board Training The School/University Partnership Office has developed a two pronged approach to Board Training. We are providing prospective training for those academies in need of specific support. Additionally we are offering a comprehensive training in Spring 2017 for all 18 of our academies. Both trainings include: Charter School Board Legal Issues, Board Budget/Finance, Management Company Relationships, Legal Requirements/FOIA/OMA, Budget Building & Monitoring, Curriculum Assessments, and more. Board training is also available at the academy by request.

Transition Program In efforts to increase University graduation and retention rates, SUPO developed the Public School Academy Transition Program. Founded in the fall of 2011, the PSA Transition Program works in partnership with SVSU's enrollment management and student service offices to: 1. recruit students from SVSU's Public School Academies, 2. provide financial support through the PSA Scholarship, and 3. provide the academic supports needed to retain and graduate students. Students who receive a PSA scholarship enter the Transition Program and are placed into an intense college readiness program that provides supports in and outside of the classroom. Some of the supports include one-on-one tutoring through the Center for Academic Achievement, volunteer experiences, leadership experience, employment, and academic advising.

Letter from The Dean of The College of Education It was a privilege to become the fifth Director of Saginaw Valley State University’s School/University Partnership Office in July 2014. I became enthusiastic about the work being done in each of our public school academies right from the start of my tenure. I remember the visits to the campuses that summer, seeing so much activity in each of the settings. I was struck by the dedication in each school leader’s eyes. For example, at Woodland Academy, I first met with Nathan Tarsa when he was gowned in painter’s clothes, busy in a remodel of classrooms during the summer months. I wondered how he arrived at this place, where he would toil during his “summer off” that we all read about in the news.... And at Cesar Chavez Academy that same month, touring the high school and seeing juniors and seniors in pre-calculus class in the heat of a July morning sun... where did they get the resilience to stay put for such a long set of lessons? The truth is, of course, in the dedication to the love of learning and the quest to find out “one more thing” to make the world a better place. During my tenure as Director, I was most proud of the work we accepted in helping our schools adapt to the new set of state tests (M-STEP). We were all in a similar place, wondering how to plan and prepare for the new tests on new equipment. Together we figured out readiness strategies that helped teachers and students embrace the new challenges found in M-STEP testing. I am pleased that this work has continued, including the use of SVSU’s Macomb campus, and I am proud of the leadership exhibited by my successor, David Lewis, and the team he has lead.

I accepted the position of “Dean” of the College of Education starting July 2015. In this role I still rejoice in the opportunity to work with the fine leadership found in the School/University Partnership Office. It is my honor to still connect with the staff, students, and school leaders of our public school academies. My personal mission is to connect with these individuals in a variety of settings. The School/ University Partnership Office is a favorite of mine due to the diverse challenges each of our public school academies face and overcome. One day~ soon, I hope~ I foresee our faculty in the College of Education out in the field visiting our academies and working with teachers and students “on location.” One day, again soon, I foresee us welcoming graduates from our academies into the College of Education to be trained as teachers. We often say, “Your success is our passion.” It is so very true, and when a student from say, Chandler Park, is successful, we feel it here (and we want all of our public school academies to feel it, too). Congratulations to David Lewis and the team in the School/University Partnership Office for making “success” a routine word in our work.

Sincerely,

Craig Douglas, Dean College of Education Saginaw Valley State University
