Your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) helps determine the financial assistance you may be eligible for and how much you will pay out of pocket.

Some scholarships, such as the Michigan Achievement Scholarship, are automatically awarded to in-state high school graduates, who can receive up to $5,500 per year for up to five years. Eligibility is determined by information provided in your FAFSA. The application for FAFSA opens in December.

Standard tuition for all out-of-state students is $28,550. Standard fees apply.

RED & WHITE SCHOLARSHIP

If you live out-of-state and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, you qualify for our Red & White Scholarship, which will provide you with a reduced tuition rate estimated at $13,650.

Don’t forget to add your social security number to your application so your FAFSA will be linked to your file.

GPA SCHOLARSHIPS

Students are guaranteed the top academic scholarship for which they qualify based on their cumulative high school GPA. SVSU will use your weighted GPA if your high school provides it on your transcript.

THE PRESIDENT’S SCHOLARSHIP COVERS 100% OF TUITION

Students with a 3.95+ GPA who apply and are admitted to SVSU before December 1 are automatically invited to compete for our most prestigious scholarship, which covers 120 credit hours toward your first degree. Final selections are made in February. Housing is not covered by the President’s Scholarship

Incoming freshmen with a 3.0+ GPA get an extra $1,500 to help pay for housing on campus. This is a renewable 4-year award.

Get an extra $1,500 Academic Excellence Scholarship for your freshman year with a 1380+ SAT or 31+ ACT. (President’s Scholarship recipients excluded).

DONOR-FUNDED SCHOLARSHIPS

By completing one online form, students will be considered, based upon their responses, for the hundreds of SVSU donor-funded scholarships for which they may qualify. Students may be asked additional questions to determine eligibility for other scholarships. Scholarships are awarded based on a number of criteria, including students’ community service, essay responses and financial need (based on information from the FAFSA).

Congratulations on your hard work and efforts to get ahead by starting your college degree while still enrolled in high school. SVSU rewards academic pursuits by giving credit earned through AP, IB, CLEP and dual enrollment.

At SVSU we accept AP, IB and CLEP exam scores as credits for classes. You can see what your test scores will equate to at svsu.edu/dualenrollment.

EARLY/MIDDLE COLLEGE or DUAL ENROLLMENT

When applying to SVSU, early/middle college or dual enrolled students are considered first-year students and should complete a freshman application. This has the added bonus of allowing you to qualify for freshman scholarships. Professor Wedge holds an MFA in directing and a BS in Theatre. He is a member of SDC, ATHE, and SAFD as an advanced actor combatant.

Twice nominated for the Mary H. Anderson Adjunct Faculty Award, he is a mentoring faculty member at SVSU.

Dr. Julie Keil, Associate Professor of Political Science

Professor Keil is the founder and a co-advisor of the SVSU Moot Court team, currently ranked #17 nationally and #1 in Michigan. SVSU’s Moot Court program has never missed a national championship qualification since she founded the group in 2010.

Ryan Pelletier is an entrepreneur at SVSU.

During high school, Ryan was passionate about both DECA and skateboarding. He knew early on that a business program was the right fit for him. While studying at SVSU, Ryan dedicated a significant amount of time to the Product Innovation Lab, working on a new product vision. He designed a longboard that can be stored in small spaces, such as a high school locker.

SVSU offers a 4+1 MBA program, enabling business students to earn an MBA in just one additional year after completing a bachelor’s degree.

Professor Sirias works with students to help improve the delivery of health services in Michigan. With a two-year, $245,000 grant from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund, Professor Sirias will partner with two clinics in the Great Lakes Bay Region: The Child & Family Services of Saginaw and Family & Children’s Services of MidMichigan.

REGIONAL SALES COMPETITION

SVSU hosted a two-day competition for regional university students to test their skills in a supportive environment while receiving guidance from sales professionals. On the first day, participating students received personalized training from the NBA Milwaukee Bucks inside-sales team. They then competed in a tournamentstyle role-play and elevator pitch competition, after which four SVSU business students took home cash prizes totaling nearly $2,000.

Dr. Anne Tapp Jaksa, Professor of Teacher Education

Professor Tapp is chair-elect of the American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE) Board of Directors and is past-chair of the AACTE Advisory Council of State Representatives (ACSR) Executive Committee. She serves as a director for the University of Michigan Center for Digital Curricula and a co-director of the SVSU Center for Experience Research & Design and Usability Research Team.

Teacher education students complete 500 hours in preK–12 classrooms so that they are fully prepared to lead.

Morgan Esch loved working in K–12 classrooms and planning lessons while pursuing a College of Education major at SVSU. Dr. Cline was her favorite teacher in her program.

Assistant Professor of Social Work

Professor McDowell recently received the Joy Award through the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation. He won the award in the Integrative Health & Wellness Champion category for his psychotherapy and expressive mental health work, along with his work conducted through his agency, the McDowell Healing Arts Center.

Dr. Rachel Darr, PhD, RD, CSSD

Assistant Professor of Kinesiology

Professor Darr holds a BS in dietetics and an MS and PhD in exercise science. A registered dietitian with over 10 years’ experience, she founded SVSU Sports Nutrition, which provides comprehensive nutrition services to athletes. Kinesiology students assist in promoting a balanced lifestyle for optimal performance.

SVSU nursing students achieved a 98% pass rate in licensing exams in 2024; the program ranks among the top 10% nationally for careers.

Dr. Rajani Muraleedharan, Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering

Professor Muraleedharan passionately volunteers in the community, mentors SVSU engineering students and promotes STEM education, especially for women. She advises SVSU’s Robotics Club, Society of Women Engineers and the IEEE Student Branch, and she guides the annual GoBabyGo project, in which students create specialized ride-on cars for children with physical limitations.

Dr. Art Martin, Professor of Biology

Professor Martin received the 2023 Michigan Distinguished Professor of the Year award from the Michigan Association of State Universities.

“Dr. Arthur Martin exemplifies the qualities that make a professor stand out from their peers,” said Dr. Daniel J. Hurley, CEO of the Michigan Association of State Universities.

SVSU’s Department of Chemistry is certified by the American Chemical Society. Our modern chemistry labs are equipped with state-of-the-art tools for separation and analysis, spectroscopy, surface analysis and more.

The SVSU Cardinal Formula SAE Racing Team has twice built the fastest college race car in the world and has placed among the top 20 teams several times at the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers Collegiate Design Series. In 2023, SVSU placed No. 31, ahead of Duke (No. 58) and Michigan Tech (No. 62).

Heidi Lang, SVSU’s advisor for pre-health students, is a former president of the Central Association of Advisors for the Health Profession. Her experience allows her to connect students nationwide. If you want a community of students who challenge your thinking and inspire passionate conversation, the Honors Program at SVSU welcomes up to 80 incoming freshmen each year for a rigorous academic experience. Honors students participate in specialized seminars, get extra financial support for studying abroad and shape their learning through personal research. In addition, many honors students choose to live in SVSU’s Honors Housing. The community provides a foundation for collaboration and building friendships.

Applicants must have a minimum 3.90 cumulative high school GPA to be eligible.

GLOBAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARS

This program will help you discover the important impact of gaining a global perspective in relation to your studies. SVSU Global Foundation Scholars have the chance to take specialized courses and live together in the same residential community. The goal of this program is to help you engage in discussions on global topics, gain essential leadership skills and build relationships across the campus community.

Applicants must have a minimum 3.50 cumulative high school GPA and must have demonstrated leadership and service in their schools and/or communities to be eligible.

Autonomous Asian Carp Deterrent System

Engineering students and faculty worked together on a research project and worked to create an autonomous drone designed to help keep an invasive species of Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes.

GARBER CARDINAL BUSINESS EDGE

This two-year program in the Scott L. Carmona College of Business provides exciting co-curricular travel experiences, faculty mentors and regular exposure to senior executives and business professionals.

Applicants must pursue a business degree and have a minimum 3.20 cumulative high school GPA to be eligible.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH (UGRP)

The Undergraduate Research Program (UGRP) at SVSU allows students to apply to research with faculty from any major starting as early as freshman year.

Katie Nixon from Byron, Michigan, is using her UGRP study grant to search for evidence of improved overall balance in recreational runners after using the “DuneStepper” exercise device.

Similarly, Erica L. Behnfeldt from Fenton, Michigan, is investigating how microplastics in the environment can affect single-celled organisms as part of her UGRP project.

STUDY ABROAD SPREAD YOUR CARDINAL WINGS

SVSU study abroad programs offer students unique experiences in which they can learn to be truly independent while exploring the world. These opportunities allow students to immerse themselves in new cultures with the reassurance of a strong support system, ensuring that assistance is available whenever needed.

FACULTY-LED

Students travel as a group with faculty leaders to study abroad. The destinations and courses taught vary year to year. Programs and destinations are announced by the beginning of the fall semester.

STUDENT TEACHING

The Study Abroad Office has teamed up with the College of Education to offer future teachers the opportunity to complete part of their student teaching semester abroad.

EXCHANGE PROGRAM

SVSU has relationships with many universities overseas that allow the exchange of students. Participants may live on campus and study alongside local students.

PROVIDER PROGRAM

We work with our provider partners to help coordinate your study abroad experience, including logistics with on-site orientations, housing, course registration, in-country support, cultural activities, excursions ‘and more.
