College is about preparation — academic, personal and professional. It’s about learning — in the classroom — and gaining “real world” experiences. College is about meeting people — new friends, faculty who will help you find your academic and career passion, and community leaders who create a network of opportunities. The college you select is about the right fit, and its ability to offer unique and one-of-a-kind learning opportunities and experiences that will make you and your resume stand out.

Martin Arford with students on the Kawkawlin River doing water quality research. SVSU FACULTY

Dr. Arford is never far away from the soil. For fun, he is a lifelong organic gardener and certified master gardener and instructor.
College of Arts & Behavioral Sciences Martin (Marty) Arford, Ph.D. Geography “You can’t learn physical geography unless you get your hands dirty,” says Professor Arford. And he invites his students to do so with him, whether it’s being part of SVSU’s Adopt-aBeach program or studying climate change through research in the Saginaw Bay. “It makes learning real,” he adds. Dr. Arford also has played an important role in the creation of SVSU’s new agricultural studies minor. Dr. Arford says that what made him want to teach at SVSU was meeting other faculty who “truly liked their jobs, each other and this university. They were passionate about undergraduate teaching and that resonated with me.”
Racquetball, tennis and especially badminton are Professor Misra’s favorite pastimes.
With gardening as her hobby, Dr. Jones thinks it is the similarity between teaching and gardening that makes the two important parts of her life. “I help plant seeds that celebrate the beauty and uniqueness of us all.”
College of Business & Management Kaustav Misra, Ph.D. Economics
College of Education Barbara Jean Jones, Ph.D. Teacher Education
Though Professor Kaustav Misra is almost always engaged in a research project (many of which involve his students), he says teaching is his first priority. He admits that teaching economics is not always an easy task, but he is proud of the fact that his students (whether Econ 125 or senior-level classes) come away from the class with a greater understanding of economics. Dr. Misra’s research is in the areas of family business, public economics and international economics. His students have been published in scholarly journals, presented at national conferences and received funding for projects. Since Professor Misra considers SVSU his second family, it only stands to reason that he would also be involved in out-ofthe-classroom experiences. He serves as the advisor for the Intercultural Student Association.
“I am passionate about working with education students so they may be able to effectively teach all students, regardless of ethnicity or socio-economic status. It’s important to prepare our future teachers for content delivery, but in the global world we live in, it’s also imperative that we explore classroom management and diversity issues.” Dr. Jones was an educator in the Saginaw Public Schools for more than 10 years before she realized she wanted to make a larger impact and joined SVSU so that she could teach the teachers of tomorrow.

For fun, add another “s” to Dr. Roe’s story. She is a “Season” ticket holder for the Detroit Red Wings.
Though it’s not as fast as a race car, Dr. Byam picks wakeboarding for his personal sports interest.

College of Health & Human Services Elizabeth (Beth) Roe, Ph.D. Nursing
College of Science, Engineering & Technology Brooks Byam, Ph.D. Mechanical Engineering
Professor Beth Roe isn’t intentionally alliterative, but when she mentions four things that she thinks makes SVSU’s nursing program unique, it’s all about the letter “S”: seats (96 in the program), simulation (labs imitate clinical settings), study abroad (faculty-led programs deal with global healthcare) and student support. Dr. Roe describes her own teaching style as interactive rather than lecture-based. “I use my personal experiences and engage students through real life examples,” she adds. She also works to connect health care partners with students, whether through clinicals, research or networking.
It’s difficult to pin down exactly what is Professor Byam’s favorite thing about teaching, but it likely occurs outside the classroom. “More than 80 percent of our engineering classes have a lab or hands-on component,” notes Byam. The focus of the ABET-accredited program is experiential learning, research, co-ops and internships. The result, says Professor Byam, is that SVSU engineering students gain experience that is exceptional. A profile of Professor Byam isn’t complete without a mention of his 1998 start-up of SVSU’s Cardinal Formula Racing program. Over the years, SVSU has done well in the international competition that involves 120 college programs: sixth in 2002, eighth in 2005, 14th in 2010 and 2nd in 2013 in the category of “acceleration.”

SVSU’s College of Business & Management is one of only 20 colleges in the country that offers academic coursework in family business. 80-90% of all businesses in the U.S. are “family firms,” so odds are that graduates will work for a family business, ranging from small and local, to big and global like Ford or Walmart. SVSU business students who major in management can receive a Concentration in Family Business.

SVSU PROMOTES FIELD-BASED STUDIES, INTERNSHIPS AND OTHER TYPES OF APPLIED LEARNING EXPERIENCES.
Without a doubt, SVSU has the kind of classrooms you’d expect for a modern campus. They are wireless with all sorts of technology tools for teachers. But that’s only where some of the learning happens. Learning is on-campus — possibly at a food festival where SVSU international students teach us about their homeland culture. Or it might be a late evening meeting of one of the 150 registered student organizations on campus where students learn about teamwork and leadership. And of course, learning is in the greater community. It’s an internship, a community service project, a co-op job, or a class outing to a regional business. And it’s traveling to another part of the country (or world) to engage in service learning related to a social issue that’s been studied for the semester.
Research indicates there is a correlation between engagement and enrollment. “Engagement” is defined as volunteerism, service learning and community outreach; 75 percent of SVSU’s incoming freshmen wish to participate in community-based learning and co-curricular activities.
In Sociology 101, students design, budget and implement a project for cases they designate, such as a local animal shelter, food pantry, women’s shelter or a community park.
Nursing, kinesiology and health services students engage in clinical rotations with hospitals and clinics.
Communication majors are involved in public relations for broadcast stations, chambers of commerce and non-profit organizations.
84%
Social work students complete fieldwork in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, youth service agencies and mental health facilities.
FIELD BASED LEARNING
of SVSU students engage in coursebased service with the community by their senior year.
23 In 2012-13, Student Life reported that 577 students logged almost 8,500 hours of volunteer service.
Geography 101 assesses local environmental issues such as the effect of climate change on the Saginaw Bay Watershed.
Political science and public administration majors regularly participate in internships in Lansing and Washington, D.C.
Marketing students spend a semester working on a “real project that is client-funded; students work in teams to create marketing plans, help bring a product to market, analyze audiences and develop budgets.

SVSU IS A PUBLIC UNIVERSITY WITH PERSONAL ATTENTION USUALLY FOUND AT MUCH SMALLER INSTITUTIONS, AND OFFERING A GREAT VALUE. I am a very smart SVSU Cardinal.
A recent Gallup poll suggests that students who attend “prestigious” colleges are no more likely to be “engaged” with their work or “thriving” in their lives than those students who attended a regional state school. Other studies indicated no link between expensive schools and later salary for graduates (income is more closely tied to the choice of major).
I am studying a “Top 10” Major.

The Princeton Review’s Top 10 Majors are all available at SVSU
1. Business Administration and Management 2. Psychology 3. Nursing 4. Biology 5. Education This list of the top 10 6. English Language/Literature majors by the Princeton 7. Economics Review is either directly 8. Communication/Rhetoric associated with careers or 9. Political Science degrees that are applicable 10. Computer Information Science to various careers.
“Graduates who said they had a ‘mentor who encouraged my hopes and dreams,’ ‘professors who cared about me,’ and at least one professor who ‘made me excited about learning’ are three times more likely to be thriving at work. In a similar vein, grads who did long-term projects and internships and were heavily into extracurricular activities are twice as likely to be engaged in their careers.”

Pathfinder: Mapping My SVSU Experience
Ninety incoming freshmen are selected to be a part of this “bridge” program (transitioning from high school to college). Pathfinder begins prior to the start of classes and is a three-day program that introduces you to students, staff and faculty; it also helps you navigate campus, connects you to successful alumni, and familiarizes you with university resources.

I was able to complete my degree in four years.” At SVSU: • 2013 NCAA Division II “National Player of the Year” (soccer) • 2013 All American • Recipient, Dean’s Scholarship • Peer advisor • Club Red Ambassador (tour guide) • Member, Forever Red (pre-alumni group) • Member, Student Advisory Board for the College of Business & Management

Graduate student at Nova Southeastern University, Tampa campus, in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program. “Coming to SVSU was the right choice for me. It worked on so many levels: living on campus for two years was a great experience and having professors like Dr. Charles Weaver (assistant professor of health sciences) who want you to learn, not memorize, was great. On top of all of that, I had great scholarship support that helped me make the decision to go to graduate school so much easier.”

Emerald Joiner Currently: Third-year music and voice major and member of the track and field team. Intends to graduate in spring 2016 with a career goal to be a music teacher in a middle or high school, and for pure enjoyment, to be an accompanist for an orchestra. “I don’t believe that at another university I would be able to do the two things I love (music plus track and field). I would be choosing one or the other. Having that support from the professors and the coaches is awesome. There was no question in my mind when I visited SVSU. It fit me: the campus, the music department, the size of the school, the one-onone connections to faculty. And with the scholarship support I received, it removed a lot of pressure on my family.” At SVSU: • Recipient of Dean’s Scholarship, Rhea Miller Music Scholarship, track and field scholarship • Member, Track and Field team (discus, shot put, hammer weight)

“When I was a senior in high school, I took a tour of SVSU. I fell in love and knew I would come here. That was my first best decision. The second was getting involved with the Living Leadership Program. It’s such a great way to really understand who you are. With the LLP ‘camp,’ I started classes knowing 33 students. In my second year of LLP, I was a mentor, a resource for freshmen who are learning to navigate college life. And this past year (201314), I was the R.A. for LLP. LLP has been the greatest experience for me.” At SVSU: • Resident Assistant • Member and communications coordinator for RHA (Residence Hall Association); also, SVSU representative at RHA regional and national conferences • Member, director for MORHA (Michigan Organization for Residence Hall Associations) • Co-chair of 2014 regional RHA conference held at SVSU (RHAs from Michigan, Ontario, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois)
