As summer fades into autumn, remember that OLLI is here for you with an exciting slate of fall classes, trips, and speakers. Why not try something new? With over 90 classes this semester and a dozen day trips, there is something for everyone. Established in 2001, we have grown to over 2,100 members from throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region. We are constantly trying to keep our members happy. This semester, check out our new instructors and let me know if you like them, and as always, let us know what classes and trips you’d like to see in future catalogs too.

Cancer Free with CyberKnife

SPONSORS Dr. V. Elayne Arterbery, Seton Cancer Institute Dr. V. Elayne Arterbery, radiation oncologist at Seton Cancer Institute, will lead a discussion into the current advances in cancer care for patients while highlighting the unique capabilities of the CyberKnife system. The St. Mary’s of Michigan CyberKnife, located in Saginaw, brings leadingedge technology and a highly sought-after treatment option to our local communities. This specialized system provides patients a pain-free, nonsurgical option for the treatment of tumors anywhere in the body, often with little to no recovery time or side effects. Dr. Arterbery will discuss current advances in treatment options and review a series of actual patient case studies. Taking a special interest herself in the treatment of cancer of the prostate and breast, Dr. Arterbery will also share the current research and advances being made to care for these patients less invasively in the future.

Wednesday, October 10 – Fast, Feast, and Fest: World Religions and their Holy Days David Nichols, Ph.D., SVSU One way to understand major world religions is through their holy days. In this talk, Dr. Nichols of SVSU’s philosophy department will use examples of annual religious events—major holidays, mostly—from around the world as a way of understanding religious traditions and their “sacred time.” We will see how holidays play a role within larger liturgical calendars and how they shape community identities. Sacred time is an extraordinary or transcendent experience of events, clearly distinguishable from the ordinary or mundane. Each religious tradition has a way of situating human beings into a deeper realization of what makes their time meaningful. Holidays have the power to transform how we think about the ordinary time of everyday life. Join Dr. Nichols to learn how there can be various kinds of religious orientation to time, not just a singular way of thinking about it. Wednesday, November 14 – Caring for Yourself While Caring for Another OLLI Member Jerry A. Willing, LMSW, LMFT November is National Family Caregivers Month. The emerging Alzheimer’s and dementia epidemic is making an unwelcome visit into the lives of our families. No one really expects it, but at some time or another, just about everyone has been—or will be—responsible for giving care, for a sustained period, to someone close to them. Unfortunately, the most devoted caregivers are at risk of dying first themselves unless they ask for help and strengthen their self-care skills when caring for loved ones. Jerry and June Willing became OLLI members when OLLI was founded, and he cared for her for ten years as they struggled with her Alzheimer’s. Jerry is a marriage counselor and he will present the eight stages of becoming a successful caregiver and avoiding burnout, sharing his own personal experiences: including the emotional roller coaster ride of shock, anxiety, confusion, depression, anger, guilt, and grief. You will discover your inner traits and strengths which will enable you to experience laughter and joy during this arduous caregiver journey. Join us beforehand for a performance by “OLLI’s Follies,” the singing interest group.

INTEREST GROUPS Over the years we have learned that people join OLLI for two major reasons. The first is the opportunity to learn new things and travel; but a second — and sometimes more important — reason is the opportunity to meet new friends who have similar interests. Interest Groups bring together members who have similar interests or hope to meet others socially. From time to time we hear that our members would like to start a new Interest Group. The first step of the process is to find a group leader. This is the person who communicates with the group members and works with the OLLI office to secure a meeting place and a regular meeting time. If you are interested in leading a group, or want to learn more about the process, contact Katherine Ellison at (989) 964-4310 or by email at keelliso@svsu.edu.

CURRENT EVENTS & WORLD CULTURE (142) Reality vs. Promises: Economic Growth, Full Employment, and Tax Policy — A Conversation

With the current economic environment, it is impossible to say what will be the “topic of the moment” in six months (weeks, days, etc.), so we’re going to leave this one a bit “up in the air.” The session will begin with a brief lecture explaining the economic concepts of full employment, strong economic growth rate, and their relationship to changes in taxing and spending policies by the federal government to address common misconceptions on these topics. We will then spend the majority of the time having a conversation on the topics as well as addressing questions from the class. FALL 2018 CLASSES (144) News with Numbers

Many major decisions are made based on numbers, but can we trust them? What do they mean, and do they really apply to us? In this class, we will explore what some of these numbers mean and how they are determined. We will view numbers used to give credibility to information such as margins of error, algorithms, and graphs. Percentages, when used to report on information (polling results), are subject to error and not as precise as they appear. We will look at research studies used to influence us and change our behaviors. The results of these studies tend to be hyped in the news, but they may not apply to us and may possibly hurt our decision making. Major studies can also influence numbers, so we will look at some of the reasons why. Instructor: Chris Eckerle, OLLI Member Tuesdays • 9/11, 9/18, 9/25 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C140 Price: $23 for members • $46 for non-members

(145) Midterm Political Update

Midterm congressional elections tend to follow a predictable trajectory. The party in power loses seats in the House and Senate, and we have our first informal referendum on the popularity of the president. 2018 presents a somewhat more dynamic perspective to the normal mid-term cycle; the Republican Party has held control of both houses of the legislative branch and controlled the presidency as well. A loss of the House may give rise to symbolic draft of articles of impeachment, while a loss of both the House and the Senate may yield something far more historic. This course will closely analyze key House and Senate races around the nation and make predictions. Instructor: Jim Johnson, Veteran OLLI Instructor Wednesday and Thursday • 10/24, 10/25 • 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Location: Curtiss Hall Seminar F&G Price: $47 for members • $74 for non-members

(146) Constructive Insurgency

Without question, the American political system is not delivering for the American people. Partisan gridlock and the use of archaic rules which govern the House and Senate ensure that little meaningful legislation ever passes, and annual governmental shutdowns are a certainty. This course will explore a concept known as “constructive insurgency”—the strategies and tactics that present the current duopoly with meaningful competition, forcing them to perform or be replaced. Students will be exposed to the work of Michael Porter and Katherine Gehl of the Harvard Business School while drawing on their own experience, contributing new knowledge as to how we might escape our current political malaise. Instructor: Jim Johnson, Veteran OLLI Instructor Tuesday and Wednesday • 11/13, 11/14 • 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Location: Curtiss Seminar F&G Price: $47 for members • $74 for non-members

(175) The Columbian Exchange

They gave us tomatoes, potatoes, beans, corn, bell peppers, and turkeys. We gave them cholera, smallpox, yellow fever, malaria, and despair. There has been no cataclysm in history to equal the impact of the arrival of Europeans on the American continent. How is it possible that the overwhelming majority of the region from what is now Mexico to the southern reaches of what are now Argentina and Chile could fall to European conquest so quickly and so totally? Societies of dramatic complexity, highly sophisticated political and religious structures, truly remarkable capacities in mathematics and architecture and agriculture simply disintegrated. It wasn’t a conquest; it was a disaster of immeasurable dimensions. Why did it happen? How did it happen? How does it influence us even today? Its roots lie deep in Europe’s history. Its victims lie in America. Instructor: Thomas Donahue, OLLI Member Tuesdays • 10/23, 10/30, 11/6 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C129 Price: $23 for members • $46 for non-members

Consideration will be given to the beliefs, influences, and experiences that formed him and explain the direction of his administration. We’ll begin with the early years, Hollywood, and pre-presidential political activity. From here, we’ll move on to the election of 1980, Reagan’s domestic and foreign policies, and national security. We’ll complete the course with his last years and legacy. Instructor: John Pafford, Ph.D., Veteran OLLI Instructor Tuesdays • 9/18, 9/25, 10/2, 10/9 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C129 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

(179) Discussions of Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the American People, Part III

First published in 1980, Howard Zinn’s review of American history, titled A People’s History of the United States, instantly caught the attention of both historians and the public. The book reframes the narrative of American history, seeking to tell the story from the perspective of the “people,” instead of the “great men” whom he had felt disproportionately dominated the mythology and memory of the American past. While Zinn’s efforts have undoubtedly proved successful in introducing American audiences to a different version of a familiar story, his work has not been without detractors — both inside and outside of academia. This course will provide context for the creation of Zinn’s seminal work and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of his approach to American history, while examining the views and arguments he presents in the book. Based on the 2009 edition of A People’s History of the United States, this course is a continuation of that offered by Drs. Brad Jarvis and Kathleen McGuire of the SVSU History Department. Instructor: John Baesler, SVSU Thursdays • 9/13, 9/20, 9/27, 10/4, 10/11 • 2:30-4:30 p.m. Location: Curtiss Hall Alumni Lounge Price: $32 for members • $62 for non-members

(180) Saginaw’s Early History: 1850s-1870s

Cork and white pine once decorated the Saginaw Valley to the north, creating a blanket of green as far as the eye could see. After lumber was commercialized in 1847, both East Saginaw and Saginaw City experienced exceptional growth during the 1850s to 1870s period. The post-Civil War era was one of the most prosperous growth periods in Saginaw history. In fact, the lumber and salt industries obtained their labor from the large immigration to the Saginaw Valley. This course will cover three decades of local history along with some events from the recently published book, Saginaw Adventures With Georg. Instructor: Rose Ederer, Author Tuesdays • 11/6, 11/13 • 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Location: C140 Price: $18 for members • $36 for non-members

FALL 2018 CLASSES (182) Much Apu About Nothing: What Caused the Civil War?

What caused the Civil War? Most historians argue convincingly, based on a wealth of evidence, that slavery was the primary cause of the conflict. But many Americans tell pollsters that the war was a product of constitutional questions, states’ rights, even economic differences. Who is right and what difference does it make? In this presentation, a professor of history at the University of Detroit Mercy, will explore the competing causes that Americans have suggested for the Civil War, explain how slavery led to the conflict, and discuss why getting this right is important to our identity as Americans and our understanding of current racial questions. Instructor: Roy Finkenbine, Ph.D., University of Detroit Mercy Thursday • 10/18 • 1-3 p.m. Location: C129 Price: $12 for members • $24 for non-members

(183) The Cuban Missile Crisis: A Lesson for All Time

Speaking to the United Nations in September 1961, President Kennedy warned, “Every man, woman and child lives under a nuclear sword of Damocles, hanging by the slenderest of threads, capable of being cut at any moment by accident or miscalculation or by madness.” The potential for accident, miscalculation, and madness still exists today. This potential has been heightened most recently in the Middle East and the Korean Peninsula. In looking for ways to de-escalate the present crises, it is worth looking back to a previous time when the world held its collective breath during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962, which this class will focus on along with the early Cold War. Instructor: William Watson, Western Michigan University Tuesday • 10/16 • Noon-2:30 p.m. Location: C129 Price: $15 for members • $25 for non-members

(184) Mid-Century Modern Saginaw: Saginaw Architects and Architecture, 1945-1976

This three-session class will explore Saginaw architecture in the years following World War II — an era of profound architectural and technological change. The period’s distinctive designs are often referred to as Mid-Century Modern. As an important industrial center, Saginaw had many innovative architectural firms. The structures they designed redefined the community and remain identifiable landmarks. The first class will be held at SVSU, with the other two classes held at the Castle Museum of Saginaw County History. Classes at the museum will provide an opportunity to use the museum’s extensive collection of architectural drawings and will include a chance to tour buildings within a few blocks of the museum that are discussed in the classes. This “class” will give you the opportunity to relax and savor the beauty that surrounds you and learn about the ecology and history of one of Michigan’s largest watersheds. You’ll take a trip through the “Everglades” of Michigan, and you’ll travel through one of the largest bald eagle habitats and migratory flyways in the Midwest. Hufton has explored the ecology of this region for over 40 years and has a first-hand understanding of what is happening to our watershed. Sign up quickly; each cruise is limited to 10 participants. Both trips depart from the Saginaw Marina off Lee Street in Saginaw. You will receive a letter with logistical information one week prior to the trip. Instructor: Wil Hufton III, Johnny Panther Quests Thursday • 9/27 • Session One (200): 8-11 a.m. Session Two (201): 4-7 p.m. Location: Offsite at Saginaw Marina Price: $42 for members • $62 for non-members

(202) Personalities

This course will look at the nature of personality and the fundamental psychological characteristics that contribute to differences in how people think, feel, and behave. Hopefully, the course will lead to a better understanding of ourselves and to a greater understanding and tolerance for individual differences. A number of scales assessing personality traits will be presented. Part one of the course (Fall 2018) will look at the five most important traits (extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, & openness), motives, positive and negative emotionality, differences in emotional experience, values and moral character, and traits that shape how you think. Instructor: Carol Gohm, OLLI Member Mondays • 9/10, 9/17, 9/24, 10/1 • 1-3 p.m. Location: C129 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

(203) New Member Orientation

This is your chance to learn more about OLLI and SVSU. While not required for membership or to register for classes and trips, this orientation will give you an inside look at all the details of OLLI membership. You will meet the OLLI staff and advisory board members and take a tour of the SVSU campus. Although there is no cost for the orientation and tour, you must register so we know how many to expect. The orientation will be held in C129 (the OLLI classroom). Instructor: Shelley Wegner, Associate Director of OLLI Wednesday • 9/5 • Noon-2 p.m. Location: C129 Price: Free for all but must pre-register

FALL – TECHNOLOGY TUESDAY (204) Technology Tuesday: REAL ID and Enhanced Licenses in Michigan

Michigan is privileged to share a border with Canada, making it just a short trip for a weekend in another country; however, this close connection can also cause confusion over what Michigan residents need to visit our northern neighbors. Join an employee of the Michigan Department of State for this useful Technology Tuesday session to learn about the history and implementation of REAL ID as well as how to obtain REAL ID, enhanced driver’s licenses, and ID cards. Call the OLLI office to register: (989) 964-4475. Instructor: John Strodtbeck, Michigan Department of State Tuesday • 9/11 • 9-10 a.m. Location: C129 Price: Free for members • $15 for non-members
