The fall schedule is always the busiest at OLLI. As the weather starts to cool down, more members are attending classes or going on day trips instead of braving the roads themselves. I think you’ll enjoy what we have to offer this fall semester. Day trips include several adventures and great performances, and classes include a number of new fitness choices to keep you in shape all year long. Don’t forget the great monthly meeting opportunities too — including our fall kickoff meeting in September. It is a great place to learn about what the Great Lakes Bay Region has to offer older people, while meeting new friends and learning something new too. Don’t forget that you can bring a friend to any monthly meeting as a guest for the first time free. Hopefully, they enjoy what they see and decide to join. With over 2,000 members for the third year in a row, OLLI’s offerings continue to grow with a little something for everyone.

The 55-foot brick tower is built into the keeper’s quarters and painted white. For the next 84 years the light guided vessels from Saginaw Bay in Lake Huron to the entrance of the Saginaw River. Range lights were built in pairs to allow ships to align themselves with the center of a channel. When the two lights were in line, a ships crew knew they were safely in the center of the channel. The light was deactivated in 1960 and abandoned by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1980. The building was left to deteriorate at the hands of vandals. In 1989 the Dow Chemical Company bought the lighthouse and is working with the Saginaw River Marine Historical Society to restore the structure. Following the tour of the lighthouse we will visit the Maritime Museum inside the Bay City Mall. Your host for this tour is OLLI member Cheryl Revard. INTEREST GROUPS Over the years we have learned that people join OLLI for two major reasons. The first is the opportunity to learn new things and travel; but a second — and sometimes more important — reason is the opportunity to meet new friends who have similar interests. Interest Groups bring together members who have similar interests or hope to meet others socially. From time to time we hear that our members would like to start a new Interest Group. The first step of the process is to find a group leader. This is the person who communicates with the group members and works with the OLLI office to secure a meeting place and a regular meeting time. If you are interested in leading a group, or want to learn more about the process, contact Katherine Ellison at (989) 964-4310 or by email at keelliso@svsu.edu.

FALL 2019 CLASSES (179) Grant & Lee: Two Americans, Two Americas

Yes! Yes! Slavery was the immediate and obvious cause of the Civil War, but there might have been a war between the North and the South if slavery had never happened. What did the fisherman on the coast of Maine have in common with the tobacco farmer in Tennessee? What gave the South the idea that it could be an independent nation? Why did the South stay in the union as long as it did? What finally drove it to secede? The issues are far larger than slavery. This course will look at General Grant and General Lee as representatives, metaphors of the very different worlds that existed in the America of their time. Their differences as men and as fighters are striking, even startling, but not surprising in view of their origins, their values and their world views. Their biographies tell only a part of the story. Anecdotes will tell much more. Instructor: Thomas Donahue, Veteran Instructor Tuesdays • 9/17, 9/24 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C129 Price: $18 for members • $36 for non-members

Finally, we will look at how each side was supplied for the war by their respective homelands. Instructor: Jim Reha, OLLI Member Thursdays • 10/31, 11/ 7, 11/14, 11/21 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C140 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

FALL 2019 CLASSES (183) Non-Fiction “Historical” Book Club: Romanovs 1613-1918

Most book clubs discuss fictional novels. Those novels are usually filled with adventure, family problems, ethical dilemmas, and life-changing events. This is a non-fiction history of the rise and fall of a family dynasty. The story, however, is surprisingly similar to soap opera fiction or the “Game of Thrones.” It has lots of family intrigue, deceit, degeneracy, adultery, favoritism, graft, exile, revolt, revolution, and murder. Due to the book’s length (657 pages), it has been broken up by week. Please read the prologue, Act I, and Act II Scene 1 (to page 133) for the first week’s discussion. The cost of the book is included in this course and you may pick up your copy in the OLLI office after August 16. Instructor: Leonard Lukshaitis, OLLI Member Thursdays • 9/5, 9/12, 9/19, 9/26 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C140 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

(184) Saginaw’s African American History

Saginaw had a rich African American history in the 1800s — even with a small community. In 1855, Joshua James (JJ) Richardson was the first “documented” African American who lived in Saginaw but he mostly lived in Bay City. Born a slave, William Quincy Atwood became a successful timber real estate agent and became one of most wealthy African Americans in the state. Dr. Charles W. Ellis was Saginaw’s first African American physician at St. Mary’s Hospital in 1889. William “Will” Robinson was the first Saginaw-born African American attorney and graduated from Howard University in 1893. Learn about other local and national African Americans in Saginaw. Instructor: Leo Romo, Retired School Teacher Thursday • 9/26 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C129 Price: $12 for members • $24 for non-members

(185) George Washington: Founding Father

George Washington stands by himself above all other great Americans, acknowledged as the most significant figure in the history of this country. Yet, the qualities which made him great are too little appreciated; we need to renew our understanding of his accomplishments on the battlefield, in the political arena, and in establishing historical precedents. Still, there are those who think he has been overrated. Their views too will be considered. Instructor: John Pafford, Ph.D., Veteran Instructor Wednesdays 10/2, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C129 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

(190) Hamlet

By far Shakespeare’s most popular play, Hamlet is also one of his most perplexing. More than a simple revenge play, Shakespeare presents issues of identity, justice, madness, infidelity, and even the nature of acting itself. Come join us for an in depth look at this timeless and fascinating play. In addition to the discussion, we will provide you with a variety of tools that will assist in understanding Shakespeare’s plays both on the page and on the stage. We’ll also view selected clips of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival’s 2016 production. Because this will be a discussion-based class, it is essential that you read the play prior to class and bring a copy with you for reference during the discussion. If you don’t have a copy, the Folger Library paperback edition is recommended. It is inexpensive and readily available at Barnes & Noble and any number of online sources. It is also available in audio and eBook formats. Instructor: Don Sugg, OLLI Member Thursday • 8/29 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C129 Price: $12 for members • $24 for non-members

FALL 2019 CLASSES (200) Human Nature: What Bioresearch Reveals*

What is so special about being human? Recent researches about human behavior and neural physiology compared to those attributes of our animal relatives shed some light but pose as many questions as provide answers. This class will explore human nature in the context of recent studies of brain chemistry and mammalian behavior. The springboard for discussion will be a series of talks by Dr. Robert Sapolsky, award winning professor of neurology at Stanford University, who also has researched social behavior of primates in East Africa for many years. Some of the topics included will be brain chemicals, aggression, hunger, pleasure and pain, stress, sleep and dreams, and mood swings. Our goal will be to become more aware of our kinship with other animal species and gain a better perspective on the quirky, complex nature of human beings.
