Message from the Director of OLLI

No winter lasts forever. Soon enough spring and summer will be upon us. Here in Michigan, we generally can’t wait for the first blades of green to burst up through the muddy soil and the sunshine to grow warmer each day. Summertime might be the time for resting and relaxing, but don’t forget about OLLI! We’ve got several interesting things to offer you this semester, including more fabulous day trips and OLLI After Hours again, plus a selection of evening classes to pique the interest of those still working during the day. Let us know how you like them!

Established in 2001, we have grown to over 2,000 members from throughout the Great Lakes Bay region. We are constantly seeking to keep our members happy. This semester, check out those evening classes (shaded in green). As always, please let us know what classes and trips you’d like to see in future catalogs too!

INTEREST GROUPS Over the years we have learned that people join OLLI for two major reasons. The first is the opportunity to learn new things and travel; but a second — and sometimes more important — reason is the opportunity to meet new friends who have similar interests. Interest Groups bring together members who have similar interests or hope to meet others socially. From time to time we hear that our members would like to start a new Interest Group. The first step of the process is to find a group leader. This is the person who communicates with the group members and works with the OLLI office to secure a meeting place and a regular meeting time. If you are interested in leading a group, or want to learn more about the process, contact Katherine Ellison at (989) 964-4310 or by email at keelliso@svsu.edu.

MONTHLY MEETINGS Agenda for All Monthly Meetings

8:45 a.m. – Registration, Socializing and Light Refreshments 9:30-11:30 a.m. – Announcements and Program Sponsored in part by:

Wednesday May 9 — Climate Action: An Update Patrick Race, Dr. Jim Crissman, and Peter Sinclair Every week television brings us images of glaciers melting, devastating floods in some areas and creeping drought in others. Year after year, scientists present more and more evidence that climate disruption is accelerated by human activity. Yet one major party says it is a hoax while the other advocates for major changes in our energy policy barely able to cope with the worst of the climate crisis. Almost weekly some new way of generating or saving energy is announced and then not considered by the fossil fuel industry to be of much benefit to the overall problem. A world congress in December 2015 on climate change in Paris agrees to policies and programs that get us half way to where we need to be. Now we have a President who has said “climate change is a hoax from China.” This program features three of the leading local advocates, Patrick Race, Dr. Jim Crissman and Peter Sinclair, for using science as a way to work through the various positions on climate change and the ways that individuals can affect the changes that will surely need to come in the future. This meetings takes place at the Temple Theatre. Wednesday June 13 — Serve, Innovate and Empower: The Saginaw County School System Kathy Stewart, Ph.D. Saginaw county tax payers help fund the Saginaw ISD each year, but where does your money go? Saginaw Intermediate School District, one of 56 ISDs across the state of Michigan, serves the 12 local school districts across Saginaw County as well as a number of charter schools, public school academies and parochial schools. With over 650 team members, SISD services and support span across the county. Information shared at this session includes an overview of SISD services along with the pathway and vision the ISD has for expanding career technical education opportunities for all students. Superintendent Kathy Stewart plans to provide evidence on how SISD meets its mission to serve, innovate and empower. This meeting takes place at the Temple Theatre. Thursday August 9 — The Michigan Innocence Clinic: Freeing the Wrongfully Convicted Imran Syed Michigan Innocence Clinic Assistant Director Imran Syed will be speaking about the work of the MIC, which was the first exclusively non-DNA innocence clinic in the country. With the proliferation of DNA innocence projects at law schools across the country, many wrongfully convicted prisoners have been able to secure their freedom through DNA tests. However, DNA evidence is not available in the vast majority of crimes. For every person able to prove his/her innocence through DNA testing, there are many more who were wrongfully convicted of crimes who do not have the benefit of DNA evidence. These are the cases the MIC was founded to focus on. In its eight-year history, the MIC has secured the release from prison of 16 innocent men and women who had been convicted of crimes they did not commit. Imran Syed will discuss some recent cases that the MIC has handled and also speak about general factors leading to wrongful convictions and how such injustices can be prevented.

(33) The Summer King at the Detroit Opera House

The Summer King is a two-act opera, sung in English and composed by American composer Daniel Sonenberg. Its world premiere was held at the Pittsburgh Opera in April 2017. Its story follows the life of baseball legend Josh Gibson from his early days on Pittsburgh’s North Side to the Negro Leagues, and as the second Negro League player to be inducted in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Seen as a pioneer in the leap between segregation to integration in baseball, Gibson did not set out to break the color barrier and he wasn’t political. He was a ballplayer and he loved the game, according to Daniel Sonenberg. We’ll attend the dress rehearsal at 10 a.m, and following the opera we’ll head to Hockeytown Café for lunch. This restaurant, known as Detroit’s official sports bar, is located directly across from Comerica Park and displays a large collection of photos and memorabilia of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings. After lunch we have arranged for a tour of Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers! Your package includes ticket to the opera, lunch, Comerica Park tour and motorcoach transportation from SVSU. Thursday, May 10 • 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. • $125 for members • $145 for non-members

The multi-Tony Award winning The King and I dances its way out of New York for a much-anticipated national tour in 2018. Part love story and part culture clash comedy, the show contains some of musical theatre’s greatest numbers, from Shall We Dance and Getting to Know You, to I Whistle A Happy Tune. The latest revival of Rogers and Hammerstein’s classic musical captures all the old-school Broadway magic of the original, while draping it in a whole new level of opulent finery. It’s a brilliant new staging that is guaranteed to sweep you off your feet! Prior to the 2 p.m. performance, we’ll enjoy lunch at Granite City Food & Brewery in the Renaissance Center. Your package includes ticket to the performance, lunch, and motorcoach transportation from SVSU. Saturday, May 12 • 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. • $129 for members • $149 for non-members

(35) Doo Wop Project at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra

The Doo Wop Project begins at the beginning, tracing the evolution of Doo Wop from the classic sound of five guys singing tight harmonies on a street corner to the biggest hits on the radio today. In their epic show, DWP takes audiences on a journey from foundational tunes of groups like the Crests, Belmonts and Flamingos through their influences on the sounds of Smokey Robinson, The Temptations and The Four Seasons all the way to Doo Wopified versions of modern musicians like Michael Jackson, Jason Mraz and Maroon 5. Featuring stars of Broadway’s smash hits Jersey Boys and Motown: The Musical, the Doo Wop Project brings unparalleled authenticity of sound and vocal excellence to recreate—and in some cases entirely reimagine—some of the greatest music in American pop and rock history! Prior to the 3 p.m. performance, we’ll have lunch at Peagasus in Greektown, serving traditional Greek cuisine, and named the best

(346) How Democracies Die

Aristotle wrote that of the six forms of government during his life, democracy was without question the worst. He questioned the relationship of economics and democracy, the stability of democracy and the predilection of democracy and income inequality. Of the forms of governance, democracy dies differently. In some parts of the world, non-violent social reform is the catalyst of the death of democracy. In others, military coups bring the demise. In yet other nations, economic inequality has brought violent revolution and change. This course will conduct an “autopsy” of various democracies which have met their death. What can these lessons teach us about our future? At some point as a government, we too shall die. Class led by Jim Johnson. Wednesday and Thursday • 5/23, 5/24 • 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Location: B109 Price: $37 for members • $64 for non-members

(347) Polarized Politics: Jackson, Lincoln, and Trump

Only three times in the history of our nation have presidents faced political and cultural polarization as severe as the three above-mentioned presidents. Two were largely due to their personality flaws and lack of social gravitas (Jackson and Trump). Lincoln faced a nation divided by war. Yet despite the manner in which they obtained the presidency, they all shared a unique path to the Oval Office and behavior thereafter. This course will compare and contrast the personality, the mannerisms and the outcome of how three interesting presidents dealt with a most fractious and divided nation. With respect to Trump, we will use his history prior to elected office (as with Lincoln and Jackson) and his first year in office to project the future we all will share. Class led by Jim Johnson. (370) Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher is widely considered the most constructively effective leader so far in the post-World War II era. During the years she was prime minister (1979-1990), the United Kingdom recovered substantially from the doldrums of the previous several decades. Economic conditions revived with lower taxes, fewer government restrictions on private enterprise, and better control of private sector spending. In addition, the British victory over Argentina in the Falklands War enhanced British prestige. Yet, despite these triumphs, she fell from power. There are some interesting parallels to the defeat of Winston Churchill in the July 1945 election after he led the U.K. to victory in World War II. Course taught by John Pafford, Ph.D. Wednesdays • 6/20, 6/27, 7/11, 7/18 • 9:30-11:30 a.m. Location: C129 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

In a time of rapid westward expansion and growing international influence, the American people found themselves at a crossroads in the 1850s. As Abraham Lincoln famously noted, “A house divided cannot stand. We will become all one thing, or all the other.” This course is an exploration of the causes, course and aftermath of the Civil War. LEGAL STUDIES

(375) Theft of the Innocent: The Controversy of Civil Asset Forfeiture

In 2010 the Saginaw County Sheriff appeared in local papers posed alongside a 2007 Ford Mustang GT re-lettered with the Sheriff’s Department name and the phrase “Taken from a Local Drug Dealer.” The highly controversial act of police seizing property from suspected criminals for government use or sale for profit is known as “civil asset forfeiture.” Assets taken from criminals and resold for the benefit of the community or its police force are applauded, but what happens when innocent people are caught up in police seizure? Join attorneys Philip L. Ellison of Outside Legal Counsel and Matthew Gronda in this session to learn more about civil asset forfeiture and the controversy surrounding it. They will discuss a real-life case involving this questionable police practice. Thursday • 5/3 • 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Location: C129 Price: $Free for members • $28 for non-members

LITERATURE (377) Boarding School Novels

Are you one of those people who always sort of envied students attending boarding school? Spend the warmer days ahead immersing yourself in a number of intriguing plots whose settings are various British and New England schools. We’ll be starting on May 8 with John Williams’ Stoner. The main character is born into a dirt-poor Missouri farming family. When he goes to the state university to study agriculture, he gets drawn into the area of English literature. Next is R.F. Delderfield’s To Serve Them All My Days. After enduring shell shock during World War I, David Powlette-Jones is trying to get his life back in order by teaching in an isolated British school. Marisha Pessl’s Special Topics in Calamity Physics is our next selection. This brilliant book is about a clever young woman who has a wide grasp on science, literature, and music (these small details greatly enrich the texture of the book), but who doesn’t have many friends. Our final book will be Donna Tartt’s The Secret History. A charismatic classics professor attracts a group of misfit students whose lives wind up going beyond the boundaries of normal morality. Although the books are on the hefty side, they are compelling to read! Class led by OLLI member Rose Kohut. Tuesdays • 5/8, 6/12, 7/10, 8/14 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C101 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

(380) The Everly Brothers: Heartaches and Harmonies (Revised)

Among the first 10 inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Everly Brothers were the artists most closely associated with country music. The Kentucky-bred duo grew up performing on the family country radio show all over the South and Midwest in the 1940s before becoming early rock and roll stars in 1957 with their classic recordings on the Cadence label. Don and Phil Everly’s main musical contribution was their keening, knife-like harmonies that would become important models for later harmony-based rock and roll acts such as Simon and Garfunkel, the Beatles, the Bee Gees and the Hollies. This fun and informative four-session course will use a wealth of vintage video, photos, and even some early radio broadcasts to examine the amazing career of Don and Phil Everly. The class will also examine the rise of country music in America during the 20th century and its impact on the Everly Brothers, one of the most important country-based recording artists in the history of rock and roll. Instructor is Gary Johnson. Wednesdays • 5/9, 5/16, 5/23, 5/30 • 1:30-3:30 p.m. Location: C129 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

Join us for an exciting discussion of the historic Bay City Auto Company and Michigan Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in this unique OLLI After Hours event. The Bay City Auto Company became the world’s first Cadillac store and distributorship in 1904, changing its name to Mitchell Cadillac in the 1960s and was sold to Labadie in 1979. In 2005, Mitchell family descendants focused their automotive interests, and began selling classic and exotic collector cars across the globe through the revived Bay City Auto Company and its sister organization, the Bay City Motor Company. Additionally, a display of photos and memorabilia for the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Internet Hall of Fame has been displayed at the Bay City Motor Company since 2005. SCIENCE & NATURE (384) STEM on the Saginaw River

There is much talk about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and how these skills will help with the economic development of our area. Many people approach science and engineering skills as if they are new to the Saginaw Bay Area but these talents and competencies built this region. The skills and knowledge of the logging industry led to the shipbuilding and chemical industry along with smaller industries such as kit homes and boats. The major shipbuilders such as Davidson, Wheeler, and Defoe used and added to the STEM techniques of their day. Some of the largest Great Lakes ships were built using the most innovative techniques of their time in Bay City. This class will highlight the STEM proficiencies of the major shipbuilders in Bay City. This class will also showcase how they have laid the groundwork from the 1800s on for what Bay City has become today. Course led by OLLI member Chris Eckerle. Tuesdays • 6/12, 6/19 • 1-3 p.m. Location: C130 Price: $18 for members • $22 for non-members

(385) Language Matters from A to Z

Walking and talking come naturally but learning a language is another matter. The language we acquire in childhood serves us well enough for communication. Only later do we become sensitive to the nuances of vocabulary, master grammar and realize that our mother tongue is one of many. In this class we will explore the realm of language with all its diversity and then amuse ourselves with the rich complexity of English. We will consider the status of English as one of the world’s nine dominant languages and become aware of the dynamic nature of words and language itself. The goal of this class is not only to inform but also to enjoy and ultimately to appreciate the luxuriance and illogic of everyday English. Leaning on the lore of lots of lexicon experts, Bob Enszer, retired teacher and longtime lover of lex, will try to lead lucidly. Wednesday • 8/1, 8/8, 8/15 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C129 Price: $23 for members • $46 for non-members

(386) What is a Monster? The Philosophy of Art/Aesthetics

What is art? What makes “good” art? It is often said that, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” So perhaps “good art” is subjective. But is what counts as art and what doesn’t also subjective? Does the viewer (through interpretation, emotional engagement, etc.) add to, or even complete the art? This course will focus on questions like these as well as others that arise in aesthetics and the philosophy of art. In addition, similar questions relating to music and film will be explored. For example, what makes a song or film “good”? Special attention will also be given to the horror genre: What makes a horror film a horror film? What is a monster? Is there something morally wrong with enjoying a film that depicts people being killed by a maniac,
