Message from the Director of OLLI

Winter will soon set in, followed by Michigan’s landscape blanketed in snow and ice. Some of you are snowbirds and lucky to get away from the dropping temps and slippery scenes of our winter wonderland — while the rest of us tough it out with red noses and chapped lips. Here in the OLLI office, long before the first flake hits the ground, we’ve prepped a winterworthy list of classes and trips to keep you active and energized through the cold months.

Established in 2001, we have grown to over 2,000 members from throughout the Great Lakes Bay region. We are constantly seeking to keep our members happy. This semester, check out the plentiful assortment of cooking, history and exercise classes to feed your soul, mind and body during the drab winter days. As always, please let us know what classes and trips you’d like to see in future catalogs too!

Katherine Ellison, Ph.D., Director keelliso@svsu.edu

Join us at our 15th annual Winterfest Wednesday, Jan. 10

This meeting includes more than 20 different organization and vendor tables that may interest OLLI members. Come early to check them out! Bring a Friend! This program is free for members and potential members — there is no need to pre-register. Guests may attend one monthly meeting without a charge. If guests come more than once they either need to join OLLI or pay a $10 fee per meeting. OLLI members who bring a guest will be put in a drawing to win a $10 voucher, and their guest will also win a free membership!

INTEREST GROUPS Over the years we have learned that people join OLLI for two major reasons. The first is the opportunity to learn new things and travel; but a secondary — and sometimes more important reason — is the opportunity to meet new friends who have similar interests. Interest Groups bring together members who have similar interests or hope to meet others socially. From time to time we hear that our members would like to start a new Interest Group. The first step of the process is to find a group leader. This is the person who communicates with the group members and works with the OLLI office to secure a meeting place and a regular meeting time. If you are interested in leading a group, or want to learn more about the process, contact Katherine Ellison at (989) 964-4310 or by email at keelliso@svsu.edu.

TAI CHI/QiGONG FESTIVAL This gentle form of exercise can help maintain strength, flexibility, and balance. It could be the perfect activity for the rest of your life. Tai Chi is often described as “meditation in motion.” Transform our quality of life as millions of Chinese have. “The ancient art of Tai Chi uses gentle flowing movements to reduce the stress of today’s busy lifestyles and improves health,” according to the Mayo Clinic, per the Harvard Medical School. Students and teachers from around the state will explore the latest developments and techniques. This event will be hosted by OLLI’s Tai Chi teacher and founding member of Cloud Hands Michigan, Jim Bush. The sessions focus on interesting aspects of these arts, led by outstanding instructors from around Michigan.

MONTHLY MEETINGS Agenda for All Monthly Meetings

8:45 a.m. – Registration, Socializing and Light Refreshments 9:30-11:30 a.m. – Announcements and Program

Wednesday, Jan. 10 – Diversity Month and the 15th Annual Winterfest! “The Compassion and Complexities Behind Cultural Competency Education” Mamie Thorns, Ph.D. This address from Dr. Mamie Thorns, SVSU special assistant to the president for Diversity Programs, will explore the importance of educating the public on better understanding individuals with different backgrounds and lifestyles. Beginning this past year, SVSU — with Dr. Thorns’ guidance — began hosting a series of lectures and training sessions aimed at broadening the audience’s understanding of people of different genders, ethnicities, nationalities, religious affiliations and world views. Professional speakers, coaches, consultants, authors and experts from national organizations have been invited as keynote speakers to SVSU’s Cultural Competency Dialogue series, which also has involved interactive ice-breaker sessions and role-playing scenarios that have allowed attendees to better grasp the perspectives of others. In “The Compassion and Complexity of Cultural Competency Education,” Dr. Thorns outlines the relevance of this type of initiative during a time in which cultural misunderstandings often add fuel to contentious public discourse.

Wednesday, Feb. 14 – “The Life and Times of the Lincolns” Abraham & Mary Todd Lincoln (John and Marian King) An odd couple, the Lincoln’s roamed the White House from 1861 through 1865, while the United States was torn apart amidst a great civil war. At this special Valentine’s/President’s Day Monthly Meeting, join 16th President Abraham Lincoln and his wife Mary Todd, portrayed by professional re-enactors John and Marian King, for a discussion of their life and how they met, as well as their time in the White House! The Lincolns will tell you stories about their education, law practice and the antics of their boys, as well as family sorrows. President Lincoln will also speak on the Civil War and his Gettysburg Address.

Wednesday, March 14 – “The Problem of Gerrymandering” Kevin Deegan-Krause, Ph.D. Gerrymandering — the drawing of district lines for partisan political advantage — is a practice that distorts democracy but one that has over time become deeply embedded in the American political system. This lecture and discussion will look first at the power that comes with drawing lines, then discuss the ways in which the partisan line-drawing has become both more powerful and less subject to checks and balances, then address the question of how this affects democratic representation, and finally discuss efforts that have been undertaken to restore balance in this important but often ignored area of American politics. Kevin Deegan-Krause is Associate Professor of Political Science at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. His research focuses on political parties and democracy in Europe with emphasis on Europe’s newer democracies and its newer parties. His ongoing research includes projects on party transformation, populism and the sources of electoral support for authoritarian leaders.

Wednesday, April 11 – “The Eastland Disaster” Caitlyn Perry Dial, Ph.D. In the summer of 1915, the passenger boat Eastland called St. Joseph, Michigan home. Owned by the St. Joseph-Chicago Steamship Company, Eastland transported passengers daily between the cities of St. Joseph and Chicago. On July 24, 1915, the Western Electric Company chartered the boat to transport 2,500 of their employees to a company picnic in Michigan City. Eastland capsized while still tied to the dock, killing 844 people. This presentation by Dr. Caitlyn Perry-Dial, from the Women’s Historical Center and Hall of Fame, will discuss the boat’s history, the events of that day, and how after a century the tragedy remains the Great Lakes’ greatest disaster in terms of loss of life. NOTE: Some of the images shown during the presentation are graphic.

WINTER 2018 CLASSES HEALTH

(255) Transitioning from Win/Lose to Win/Win Conflict Resolution

Conflict is a normal part of living. Choosing how to deal with it in a positive way is a lifelong challenge and our choices affect individuals and communities, including future generations. As kids we were taught how to work hard, to study well, to be responsible and to be respectful. Regarding conflict, were we taught to ignore, to deny, to be violent or nonviolent? Is nonviolent conflict resolution possible in most situations or simply a naïve idea? Martin Luther King Jr. said, “This is the unusual thing about nonviolence. Everyone shares in the victory.” Hands-on exercises and group discussions will examine and demonstrate how the wisdom of win/win solutions can be achieved in one-to-one situations as well as how facilitation with a nonpartisan mediator works. Presenters Jeanne Lound Schaller and Marlene Glinski are certified mediators with the Community Resolution Center. Jeanne also heads the Midland Chapter of the Nonviolent Peaceforce that helps “Transform the World’s Response to Conflict” by teaching win/win solutions in schools. Wednesdays • 2/7, 2/21, 2/28 • 9:30-11:30 a.m. Location: C140 Price: $23 for members • $46 for non-members

HISTORY

(261) Votes for Women! Women’s Equality and Historical Changes

In 1920 American women finally achieved the right to vote with the ratification of the 18th Amendment — but women continued to work hard at much more than just their political voice. This OLLI course will examine many of the significant historical changes in the lives of American women in the past 200 years. Women have struggled to enroll in colleges to gain certifications to be medical doctors, dentists, professors as well as voters, politicians, soldiers and other related fields that were forbidden them in previous decades. The class will utilize videos, PowerPoint and discussions. It will be led by Dr. Diana Garno, retired history professor and OLLI member. WINTER 2018 CLASSES (262) “Who is James K. Polk?” — America’s Little-known Presidents

While even the weakest history buff may be familiar with the achievements of Abraham Lincoln or Franklin Roosevelt, few relish the administrative triumphs of James K. Polk, Millard Fillmore or Warren G. Harding. These and other little-known presidents are often lost to history, overshadowed by their more glamorous counterparts — but why have they been forgotten? Were their administrations devoid of achievement or simply a victim of the times—leaving important accomplishments to flounder amidst a rapidly changing era, quickly dismissed? Did their personalities or management styles show them to be more wallflower than world leader? Or have their positions of importance simply lessened over time as others outshone them with their presidential prowess? In this class, taught by Dr. Katherine Ellison, OLLI director and presidential historian, students will explore and discuss those presidents whom have fallen into the folds of the history books, discerning just why they have landed there. Wednesdays • 4/11, 4/18, 4/25 • 2-4 p.m. Location: C129 Price: $23 for members • $46 for non-members

(263) Discussions of Howard Zinn’s “A People’s History of the United States,” Part II

First published in 1980, Howard Zinn’s review of American history, titled “A People’s History of the United States,” instantly caught the attention of both historians and the public. The book reframes the narrative of American history, seeking to tell the story from the perspective of the “people,” instead of the “great men” whom he had felt disproportionately dominated the mythology and memory of the American past. While Zinn’s efforts have undoubtedly proved successful in introducing American audiences to a different version of a familiar story, his work has not been without detractors – both inside and outside of academia. This course will provide context for the creation of Zinn’s seminal work and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of his approach to American history, while examining the views and arguments he presents in the book. This is a continuation of the fall class offered by Dr. Brad Jarvis of the SVSU History Department and is based on the 2009 edition of “A People’s History of the United States.” Dr. Kathleen McGuire will lead this class and provide a variety of perspectives on both the eras discussed and the questions that arise from Zinn’s approach to American history. Thursdays • 2/8, 2/15, 2/22 • 1-3 p.m. Location: C129 Price: $23 for members • $46 for non-members

(264) But Not in Shame: The First Six Months of WWII in the Pacific

Though World War II most often conjures up images of Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich, an even more vehement campaign was fought by the Empire of Japan in the Pacific, which concluded when the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb. This class will look at the first six months of this struggle against Japan, including disasters from Pearl Harbor, the fall of Guam, Wake Island, Hong Kong, Malaya and Singapore, the Dutch East Indies and the Philippines. A discussion will also include the Triumph of MacArthur’s escape and the Doolittle Raid. Finally,

(266) Underground Railroad in the Detroit Borderlands

In the decades prior to the Civil War, the Detroit River borderland became the foremost crossing point for fugitive slaves seeking freedom in Canada. This talk will explore how and why the borderland became a destination for runaway slaves from Kentucky, western Virginia, Missouri and other slave states; how the community in Detroit, Monroe and elsewhere rallied to protect runaways in so-called “slave riots” and rescues during the 1830s; and how institutions such as churches, Masonic organizations and the militant Colored Vigilant Committee of Detroit developed more systematic forms of assistance in the 1840s and 1850s. The last runaway was helped through the borderland in 1862 and the Underground Railroad passed into memory. Dr. Roy Finkenbine, professor of history, University of Detroit Mercy, will lead this class. Thursday • 3/22 • 1-3 p.m. Location: C129 Price: $12 for members • $24 for non-members

(267) The Islamic Golden Age, Part II

In the fall semester, OLLI member Barb Mitchell began the study of Islam’s Golden Age using the Great Courses Lecture Series. Eamonn Gearon, lecturer at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, presents a fascinating look into the center of the world’s learning in the Middle East when the West was going through the Dark Ages. It’s an eye- and mind-opening look at the preservation and advancement of knowledge during a 500-year period that Westerners almost never hear or read about. Christine Szilagyi, an adjunct instructor at SVSU and Delta College, teaches this course. (271) The Pilgrims

More than just as symbol of Thanksgiving, the Pilgrims and their life in the New World served as a building block to what would become the United States. Plymouth never numbered more than 10,000 people during its slightly over 70 years as a separate colony before being absorbed by Massachusetts Bay. Yet, during this short span of years, it laid the foundation for the future United States with four key principles: 1 – Christian Foundation; 2 – Representative Government; 3 – Market Economics; and 4 – Military Defense. In governing their colony, the Pilgrims made some false starts and some policies had to be corrected. In economics, for example, they learned, grew and continue to inspire those who study them. Join Dr. John Pafford for this in-depth look at the Pilgrims and their role in American history. Ellison, MBA, JD, for a look into the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and how to use it to your advantage to access records. The class includes an in-depth look at government access available to the public, government secrecy issues, recordkeeping and data collection. Participants will receive a copy of “Redacted,” a publication of Outside Legal Counsel, and work on and send their very own FOIA requests with the help of Attorney Ellison. WINTER 2018 CLASSES LITERATURE

(274) The Great American Novel: Huck Finn

In 1884, Mark Twain wrote “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” — what many call “The Great American Novel.” Of course, the novel is set in a much earlier era of American history, one in which slavery still existed — a fact that plays a very important role as Huck and his friend Jim, the slave, push off on a log raft onto the Mississippi, both on the run from circumstances that are too oppressive to tolerate any longer. Huck and Jim are American prototypes, innocent people facing challenges that must be overcome in the context in which they are found, rather than in abstract philosophical or moral criteria; and with a deep sense of practical compromise, a virtue that has come to define the American people throughout our history. The novel presents us with a host of characters who run the gamut from complete innocents to utter scoundrels. It is an excellent snapshot of the society of the time, perhaps any time, and a wonderful introduction to the American people. It is little wonder that the novel continues to be read — here and abroad — by those who wish to know us at a very basic level. Thomas Donahue will lead this class. Tuesdays • 1/23, 1/30, 2/6 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C129 Price: $23 for members • $46 for non-members

(275) Book Club

Curl up with some good books this winter! Our first selection, “The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper” by Phaedra Patrick, is a poignant novel about a lovable widower who embarks on a life-changing adventure. Our second book is the classic “All Passion Spent” by Vita SackvilleWest. It is the story of a woman who discovers who she is before it’s too late. Our third book, “Just Mercy” by Bryan Stevenson, is a non-fiction work that is a clarion call to fix our broken system of justice. And the fourth book, “The Nazi Officer’s Wife” by Edith Hahn Beer, details how one Jewish woman survived the Holocaust. OLLI member Kathy McAllister leads the class. Book discussions will be led by OLLI members Virginia Hughes, Margy Lee, Leslie Sanders and Alice Buchalter. Wednesdays • 1/24, 2/28, 3/28, 4/25 • 1:30-3:30 p.m. Location: C140 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

(276) “The Moonstone” by Wilkie Collins

“The Moonstone” is usually regarded as the first full-length detective novel in the English language. Its complex plot focuses on a large Indian diamond that a young woman receives on her 18th birthday. After the diamond is stolen, turmoil and misunderstandings abound. Various efforts to identify the thief and recover the diamond are told in a masterly fashion. Rose Kohut, an obsessed reader and OLLI member, leads the class. Kohut previously taught Collins’ “The Woman in White.” Please read the First Narrative for the opening class. WINTER 2018 CLASSES (277) Pious Pipes of Saginaw

MUSIC

The organ is the oldest keyboard instrument with examples attested to 300 BC. While the most famous historic organs reside in Europe, there are some notable instruments in our area. This course will consist of a small sample of significant church organs in Saginaw. Class participants will see and hear the organs at Bethlehem Lutheran, Resurrection Lutheran, First Congregational, and First Presbyterian churches at 10 a.m. on March 24, April 7, April 14 and April 21 (all dates are Saturdays). Along with the resident organists who will provide some history and their favorite stops (sounds) of the instrument, long-time organist James Gladstone will lead the class, which will highlight some demonstrative music to show the differences and similarities between the various instruments. OLLI member and organ technician Helmut Schick will provide additional commentary. Class attendees may bring well-behaved children 8 years old or older for free (must pre-register by calling the OLLI office) and will have to supply their own transportation. You’ll receive two sing-a-long booklets per class (these include Beautiful Melodies, The Beatles, Show Tunes, Songs of Love and Lamentation, Songs of War and Peace and Country Classics). (279) Bruce Springsteen: The Boss

Bruce Springsteen has been America’s most important and successful rock and roll artist during the past four decades. Renowned for his poetic lyrics and energetic stage shows, Springsteen’s unique and cinematic songs have managed to capture both the hearts and the travails of common everyday people. “The Boss” has sold over 120 million records worldwide and has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In a time of national mourning, Springsteen was the artist America relied on to best address the events of 9/11. Using a wealth of performance footage, videos and hundreds of PowerPoint slides, the course will cover Springsteen’s life in New Jersey and beyond, his rise to fame and the music that has been the key to his remarkable career. Gary Johnson will lead this class. Mondays • 1/29, 2/5, 2/12, 2/19 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C129 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

WINTER 2018 CLASSES SCIENCE & NATURE

(280) Mother Earth in the Decades Ahead

Geography and culture are two broad areas of study that help clarify and bring insight into what may lie ahead for humankind of the years remaining in the 21st century. Using a series of lectures titled “Understanding Cultural and Human Geography” by Professor Paul Robbins of the University of Wisconsin as a guide, we will discuss the following topics: 1 – Restless Humanity, the Migration Conundrum; 2 – Urbanization: The Rise of World Cities; 3 – Understanding Cultural Geography, the Importance of Place; 4 – Regionalism and the Rise of New States; and 5 – Supranationalism and the Taking On of Big Problems. Finally, we will consider what geography may foretell about future economic and global power. If these are concerns that might interest you, join us in our quest for more understanding of these topics. Bob Enszer, OLLI member and retired science teacher, will facilitate deliberations. (281) Pruning Trees and Shrubs

This class provides advice on how and when to prune your trees and shrubs to ensure beautiful bloom, good shape, manageable size and healthy plants. Garden designer and writer Janet Macunovich covers simple and proven techniques for keeping plants within the bounds you set and how well and how long popular landscape plants hold up to pruning. Macunovich encourages you to “bring a branch!” (i.e., clip a limb from each plant you want to trim and bring them with you to be sure they are included in the “how to”). Janet is an author and educator who as a professional gardener has been designing, planting and maintaining gardens and landscapes for more than 30 years. She has authored nine books and is recognized for her no-nonsense practicality, humor and ability to take the mystery out of gardening topics. She is co-founder of the Michigan School of Gardening (1996-2008) and the Association of Professional Gardeners. WORLD CULTURE

(282) The Myth of America

For a disproportionately large percentage of Americans, the United States as a haven of opportunity, for upward mobility, for progress predicated on merit is not merely a tortured myth but rather a blatant lie. Millions of our “equal” compatriots live in conditions normally found in emerging nations — a world of food insecurity, a nation which systematically and intentionally disenfranchises and dilutes their very presence as a meaningful part of the political process. They are an illness away from losing what little they have and are subjected to a form of healthcare so poor in quality it frequently harms as much as it cures. Many, including an unfortunate number of veterans, find chaos and homelessness to be the only constant in their lives. This course will enter the world of the 15-20% of Americans who are forced to live with the myth of opportunity and the lie of equality. Jim Johnson will lead this class. WINTER 2018 CLASSES (283) Political Update

Our most popular course is offered in a slightly different form. While we will still examine global events and affairs, we will also continue our most recent discussion with respect to the impact of the presidency of Donald J. Trump. In particular we will continue to discuss the destruction his brief tenure is having on the gravitas and national reputation of the United States. The daily presence of his incoherence and incompetence are damaging the Executive Branch in a manner that will far outlive his tenure in office as well as erode the ability of America to exist as a unipolar hegemon with respect throughout the world. Jim Johnson will lead this class. Wednesday & Thursday • 4/4, 4/5 • 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Location: Seminar F & G Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members
