Message from the Director of OLLI
With winter comes a new year and new goals! Some people rededicate themselves to a healthy lifestyle or give up a vice — here in Curtiss 111, we are no different. Over the next year the OLLI office will be making strides toward using less paper. We believe trees are better off keeping our environment healthy than ending up in recycle bins. Hopefully you will begin to notice less-cluttered desks and shelves as we transition toward a completely digital workspace. Wish us luck! Established in 2001, we have grown to more than 2,100 members from throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region. We are constantly trying to keep our members happy. This semester, check out our free offerings for members. As always, let us know what classes and trips you’d like to see in future catalogs too.

MONTHLY MEETINGS Agenda for All Monthly Meetings
8:45 a.m. – Registration, Socializing and Light Refreshments 9:30 a.m. – Announcements and Program Begins Curtiss Hall Banquet Room Wednesday, January 9 – WINTERFEST! The Saginaw Elite Big Band Visit our vendor tables before the meeting from 8:45-9:30 a.m. Join your OLLI friends to dance the morning away at this lively Winterfest meeting. We’ll be joined by the Saginaw Elite Big Band! The Saginaw Elite Big Band is comprised of musicians that are experienced veterans of local concert, variety and swing/ballroom dance bands that have performed in and around the Great Lakes Bay Region over the last 25 years. The Saginaw Elite Big Band will cover and perform music pieces ranging from jazz to high energy swing and ballroom dance standards. This band was formed with the intent to provide only the best arrangements of music – performed by the best musicians in the area! Wednesday, February 13 – Unearthing the African American Dream in the 19th Century Midwest Jennifer Stinson, Ph.D., SVSU Amid sweeping economic changes, rising immigration, and intensifying debates about slavery, white mid-nineteenth-century Americans looked to the West as their “manifest destiny.” They and the New York journalist John O’Sullivan who coined that phrase rarely acknowledged or welcomed the free African Americans who, like white settlers, put down roots and planted crops across the Upper Mississippi Valley. Yet rural families of color richly shaped the economies, cultures, and politics of the farm neighborhoods and small towns they helped to found. Jennifer Stinson, Associate Professor of History at SVSU, weaves together diverse documents written by and about nineteenth-century African American midwesterners to explore the successes and strains that marked men’s and women’s quests to realize the full rights and dignities of American citizenship in the West. Stinson’s presentation draws from her book project “They All Mixed in Together, the White and the Colored: Freedom, Family, and Race in the Rural Upper Midwest, 1820-1920.” Wednesday, March 13 – Cold War Polygraphs John Baesler, Ph.D., SVSU A person strapped to a polygraph machine. Nervous eyes, sweaty brow, the needle trembling up and down. Few images are more evocative of Cold War paranoia. In his history of the polygraph as a tool and symbol of American war policies, John Philipp Baesler, Associate Professor of History at SVSU, tells the story of a technology with weak scientific credentials that was nevertheless celebrated as a device that could expose both internal and external enemies. Considered the go-to technology to test agents’ and employees’ loyalty, the polygraph’s true power, Baesler argues, was to expose deep ideological and political fault lines among Americans.

INTEREST GROUPS Over the years we have learned that people join OLLI for two major reasons. The first is the opportunity to learn new things and travel; but a second — and sometimes more important — reason is the opportunity to meet new friends who have similar interests. Interest Groups bring together members who have similar interests or hope to meet others socially. From time to time we hear that our members would like to start a new Interest Group. The first step of the process is to find a group leader. This is the person who communicates with the group members and works with the OLLI office to secure a meeting place and a regular meeting time. If you are interested in leading a group, or want to learn more about the process, contact Katherine Ellison at (989) 964-4310 or by email at keelliso@svsu.edu.

WINTER 2019 CLASSES HISTORY
(282) England after Elizabeth
Although each of the Tudor monarchs faced a major rebellion, it was their Stuart successors who experienced revolutionary challenges: a bloody civil war followed by the public execution of the king and abolition of the monarchy. After a series of failed experiments in government without a king, the Stuarts were restored and sent into exile in another revolution. Despite this chaos, England emerged from the 1600s as a major European power. Instructor: Bob Braddock, Ph.D., SVSU Tuesdays • 1/15, 1/22, 1/29 • Noon-2 p.m. Location: C129 Price: $23 for members • $46 for non-members
(283) Politics and Sports
In arenas from ancient Greece and Rome to the modern stadia of the 19th and 20th centuries to the media spectacles we know in contemporary times, sports have ritualized, dramatized, and challenged the prevailing political orders of all societies. One of the most iconic and controversial recent narrative created within American sport has been the NFL players’ protests of police brutality and social injustice. The response to this form of protest has reflected the strictly polarized political spectrum in the US. One of the most strident strains of counterprotest has maintained that sports and politics should remain segregated. This course explores the long tradition of the sports-politics nexus to better contextualize the highly contentious contemporary moment in the U.S. Instructor: Steven Pope, Ph.D., New Instructor Mondays • 1/7, 1/14, 1/28, 2/4, 2/11, 2/18 • 9-11 a.m. Location: C129 Price: $32 for members • $64 for non-members
(284) The Effects and Roles of War
This course offers a fresh and challenging insight into human societies through a look at the effects and roles of war. This panoramic series is not the history of battles or military campaigns, but the story of the intimate interconnections of war with human cultures and societies and how these connections have shaped history. As a penetrating view of the many contexts and meanings of warfare, this course is for anyone interested in understanding the effects and roles of war on the evolution of our civilization, past and present. Instructor: Zane Rybkowski, OLLI Member Thursdays • 2/14, 2/21, 2/28, 3/7 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C129 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

Your participation is encouraged, but not required. Topics to be discussed include Robert E. Lee, U.S. Grant, Custer, and other people and events. Was this great Civil War really necessary? What about the impact of religion? How do we determine the winners and losers? Did we get the desired outcome? Join this course and find out. WINTER 2019 CLASSES (286) Airborne Warfare: The Paratrooper in World War II
Since man first flew in an airplane the military started planning on how to use the airplane in war. The Second World War instituted the development of airborne warfare. All the major powers decided to use the airborne concept. The Germans started in Poland and continued to use them in major operations through Crete. The British and the Americans used them in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Holland, and Germany. The Japanese, Italians, and Russians used them but on a much smaller scale. We will look at the plans, strategies, and tactics of airborne warfare. (287) Technology on the Saginaw River
There is much talk about STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) and how these skills will help with the economic development of our area. Many people approach science and engineering skills as if they are new to the Saginaw Bay Area, but these talents and competencies built this region. The skills and knowledge of the logging industry led to the shipbuilding and chemical industry along with smaller industries such as kit homes and boats. The major shipbuilders such as Davidson, Wheeler, and Defoe used and added to the STEAM techniques of their day. Some of the largest Great Lakes ships were built using the most innovative techniques of their time in Bay City. (288) The Tangled Roots of English
The English language has become dominant on the world’s stage at a time when three things have happened: print, widespread literacy, and an omnipresent media. New findings about the history of English show that it is more tangled and interesting than often supposed. This class will look at the heritage of modern English from its roots as Old English (5th to 11th century) through Middle English (late 11th to the end of the 15th century) to its tangled modern formation. Celtic, Anglo-Saxon (Frisian), Viking (old Norse), French (Latin) and colonial British all have been influences. While we gather an appreciation of our fascinating English, we will explore the very nature of human language itself—oral and written, ever changing. Instructor: Bob Enszer, OLLI Member Wednesdays • 2/20, 2/27, 3/6, 3/20 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C129 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members
(289) The Era of Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson served two terms as president of the United States, elected in November 1828 and leaving office in March 1837. During these years, he established himself as one of the strongest and most consequential individuals in our political history. He has been castigated as a slave owner and for his Indian policy, but also lauded as a proponent of expanding the vote and ending the domination of government by Eastern elites. He was one of the most powerful presidents, yet promoted states’ rights. Jackson’s Administration eliminated the national debt, the only time in our history when this would be true. What led thousands of men and women in Europe to accuse their neighbors of practicing witchcraft? What led to the deaths of thousands of women who were midwives and apothecaries at a time when “doctors” had no real expertise? What led to the Salem witch trials? What was going on in the minds of men and women that they could not only accuse their neighbors, but actually take part in their murders? In this course participants will explore the witch craze from its origins in the 1400s in Europe to, hopefully, its end in Salem, Massachusetts in the late 1600s. In this class, we will discuss the medical marijuana regulations, the different chemicals inside marijuana, methods of ingestion, and how they act inside the body. If Proposal 1 (recreational marijuana) passes in November, laws related to that will also be presented. The information will allow students to make informed decisions about marijuana. The February book is Border Child. Michel Stone writes with confident authority about the heart wrenching experiences of a young Mexican couple desperately seeking their baby lost in the crossing. Bob Dylan made a seismic impact on international pop culture as he fused folk tradition, rock and roll rebellion, political insight and poetic ability into a personalized, myth-making style that still resonates today. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s, when he became a reluctant “voice of a generation” with songs such as “Blowin’ In The Wind” and “The Times They Are A-Changin,’” which became anthems for the Civil Rights Movement and anti-war protests. Discover how Dylan has been scrutinized, acclaimed, assailed and debated by critics, detractors, defenders, and fans with more fervor and attention than any other post-war musician. WINTER 2019 CLASSES RELIGION
(305) History of God
Over the years in our discussions including everything from the world’s major religions to evolutionary psychology, there is one constant—a history of violence. Using the course guide from the Great Courses, “Thinking about Religion and Violence” by Dr. Bivins of North Carolina State University, we will look at religious violence historically as well at look at violence generically in other areas, such as politics, tribalism, economics etc. Is it worse in religion or are we, sadly, just a violent species? There should be something for everyone and as usual a lively and diverse discussion. Instructor: Ron Taylor, OLLI Member Thursdays • 1/10, 1/17, 1/24, 1/31, 2/7 • 9:30 a.m.-Noon Location: C129 Price: $36 for members • $66 for non-members
(306) Aristotle’s Fix-it Shop
This course is a conversational exploration of personal worldviews. A worldview is a “belief system” behind all of a person’s actions, feelings, and attitudes. Often, we are not aware of all parts of this “philosophy of life.” Participants will have a chance to map out their own worldview, analyze it, compare it to other participants’ views, check it for consistency, and seek ways to improve it if they so desire. A Socratic dialogue will be led by the instructor. Six common subcategories of worldviews will be examined: mankind, god, ethics, nature, death, and society. The discussion leader’s focus will be on philosophical methods, not ideologies nor personal values. Instructor: Larry Kammer, Ph.D., New Instructor Thursdays • 3/28, 4/4, 4/11, 4/18, 4/25 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C129 Price: $30 for members • $60 for non-members

WINTER 2019 CLASSES SCIENCE & NATURE
(308) Personalities II
This course will look at the nature of personality and the fundamental psychological characteristics that contribute to differences in how people think, feel, and behave. Hopefully, the course will lead to a better understanding of ourselves and to a greater understanding and tolerance for individual differences. A number of scales assessing personality traits will be presented. This second part of the course will cover beliefs about the world (e.g., authoritarianism), the consistency and stability of personality, how culture influences personality, and nonconscious aspects of personality. Instructor: Carol Gohm, Ph.D., OLLI Member Tuesdays • 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 3/26 • 9-11 a.m. Location: C129 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members
(309) The Science Behind Your DNA
Scientists from the University of Michigan will present a hands-on lesson on the topic of Genetics. Participants will learn the ins and outs of the human genome, including what makes us each unique, how traits are inherited, and how Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) help identify genes responsible for complex human disease. Hands-on activities include DNA isolation from saliva, where participants see what DNA looks like and how scientists isolate it, and a GWAS activity, where participants work together to identify a genetic marker contributing to human disease. A final discussion will touch on the use of commercialized genetic tests for ancestry, personalized medicine, and will be open for questions to the scientists. See our sister course on the legal ramifications of giving up your DNA as well (293) “Stolen Blood.” Instructor: Bailey Peck, Ph.D., University of Michigan Monday • 3/25 • Noon-2 p.m. Location: C140 Price: $18 for members • $36 for non-members
