Spring and summer can mean only one thing for Michigan — construction season! And here on campus things are no different than on Michigan’s roadways. You may have noticed that our offerings are condensed this semester and that many classes are located in Science East, around the corner from Starbucks Coffee. This is due to some impending construction on C130, right next to our OLLI classroom! However, it should be done by late summer along with significant progress on the new Scott L. Carmona College of Business & Management. We will be back to our regular space for a full fall semester. Be sure to check the campus map on Page 30 to find where you’re headed or give the friendly OLLI staff a call at (989) 964-4475.

Since his first book, Blood on the Mitten, was released in 2016, he has told stories of true crimes in all corners of both peninsulas, in print and in person. In Uzbekistan, you will live on boiled grass or broiled onions, and shiver with malaria. You will spend years in orphanages. When this is over you will wonder how a child with this background grows up to become a positive, creative, accomplished woman with a joy of living and love to share. Limited books will be available for purchase. Wednesday, August 14 – 100 Years of Michigan Parks Anna Sylvester, Field Operations Chief for northern Michigan With the transfer of Fort Michilimackinac (built by the French on the south shore of the Straits of Mackinac in approximately 1715) and parts of Mackinac Island from the federal government to the state of Michigan in 1885, Michigan became one of the first states in the nation to establish a state park. With generous donations from the Dodge Brothers, the hard work of the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the tireless work of Genevieve Gillette, Michigan parks bloomed into the expansive system of today. Join us for a discussion of the Michigan State Park system during its 100th anniversary! Anna Sylvester, Field Operations Chief for northern Michigan, will regale you with her knowledge of the Michigan parks, from Mackinac Island to Tahquamenon Falls.

INTEREST GROUPS Over the years we have learned that people join OLLI for two major reasons. The first is the opportunity to learn new things and travel; but a second — and sometimes more important — reason is the opportunity to meet new friends who have similar interests. Interest Groups bring together members who have similar interests or hope to meet others socially. From time to time we hear that our members would like to start a new Interest Group. The first step of the process is to find a group leader. This is the person who communicates with the group members and works with the OLLI office to secure a meeting place and a regular meeting time. If you are interested in leading a group, or want to learn more about the process, contact Katherine Ellison at (989) 964-4310 or by email at keelliso@svsu.edu.

SPRING/SUMMER 2019 CLASSES (336) Shakespeare, Einstein & the Bottom Line: How Higher Education in the U.S. has become an Expensive Commodity

Higher education in the United States expanded in both scope and dimension following WWII thanks in large part to the G.I. Bill. For the first time in history, higher education was available to the massive middle class. The nature and function of educational institutions was institutional-centric. In the decades which followed, institutes of higher education have added unnecessary layers of administrative bureaucracy, developed an intense reliance on adjunct faculty which in many cases impacts quality and have become student-centric. With the advent of the Internet and for-profit education, the number of degrees awarded annually has never been higher, while quality is frequently suspect, and the cost creates a non-sustainable burden on most students. This course will discuss how, when and where American higher education went wrong in recent decades and will explore the trajectory of the continued disfunction to come. Instructor: Jim Johnson, Veteran Instructor Tuesday and Wednesday • 8/27, 8/28 • 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Location: C129 Price: $47 for members • $74 for non-members

HEALTH (346) The Cause of Wellness

Getting old doesn’t have to mean getting sick. “Cause of Wellness” is based on the latest independently controlled science including the research of doctors Caldwell Esselstyn, John McDougall, Dean Ornish, Neal Barnard, and T. Colin Campbell (The China Study). Medical treatment is needed in some situations, but wellness is the responsibility of each person. Natural wellness for humans begins with a whole food plant based diet. The course introduces the whys and hows of clearing the body of toxic food and the mind of toxic thoughts. Learn the causes of most of the major diseases disabling Americans, including heart disease, diabetes, cancer and gastrointestinal problems. (348) The Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Explore a fresh way to eat, an alternate food pyramid and healthier ways to prepare familiar foods. “The Anti-Inflammatory Diet is not a diet in the popular sense – it is not intended as a weight-loss program (although people can and do lose weight on it), nor is the AFD an eating plan to stay on for a limited period. Rather, it is way of selecting and preparing foods based on scientific knowledge of how they can help your body maintain optimum health. Along with influencing inflammation, this natural anti-inflammatory diet will provide steady energy and ample vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, dietary fiber, and protective phytonutrients.” We will be holding discussions, exploring options and watching Foodmatters. HISTORY (352) Fugitive Slaves in Indian Country

Helen Hornbeck Tanner, a pioneering figure in Great Lakes Native American history, once observed that an “example of African and Indian cooperation was the Indian-operated Underground Railroad. Nothing about this activity appears in the historical literature.” Indeed, there is barely a mention of the Native American role in existing Underground Railroad studies. Nevertheless, Native Americans in the Midwest played a major part in helping fugitive slaves to either find sanctuary from slave catchers or to move through on their way to Canada. This talk will discuss several examples of Native American involvement in the Underground Railroad in the Midwest, focusing on northern Indiana, northwest Ohio, and southern Michigan between the late eighteenth century and Indian Removal in the 1830s and 1840s. (356) The Iran-Contra Affair: Crime and Punishment 30 years later

During the mid-1980s, against US law and Reagan administration policy, some government employees carried out a complex scheme of trading arms for hostages in the Middle East, in order to fund an unpopular war in Central America. When the operation grew out of control, it was exposed, and Congress authorized a special counsel to investigate. On March 4, 1987, US President Ronald Reagan admitted to the American people that his “heart and best intentions” told him he had not traded arms for hostages, but that “the facts and the evidence” proved he did. Five years later, then-president George H. W. Bush pardoned six colleagues for their roles in the Iran-Contra, ending the affair with many unanswered questions. Thirty years later, the Iran-Contra Affair serves as a model for post-Watergate executive scandal, with repercussions in the present. SCIENCE & NATURE (366) Where is Your Moon?

Most people are familiar with newspaper horoscopes and can name their “Sun Sign.” These 12 signs of the zodiac are based on constellations of fixed stars in the location of the Sun when they were born. Few people, however, can name their “Moon Sign,” shown in their natal chart, a unique map of the heavens based on their date, time and place of birth. Workshop participants will learn about the influence of Luna, that mysterious earthly satellite that makes a complete revolution every 28-29 days. The appearance of her ever-changing face, visible in the night sky, is based on lunar phases. Debra will present general information of the influence of the Moon through her 12 signs and 8 phases. Workshop participants will be asked to provide their date, place and time of birth (if known) at the time of registration. Each person will receive a copy of their natal chart and personalized written analysis of their moon sign and lunar phase, which they may or may not choose to share with the group. Discussion will follow with time for questions. Break snacks and beverages are provided. Instructor: Debra Rozek, M.A., M.P.H.
