SVSU-OLLI Interest Groups Over the years, we have learned that people join OLLI for two major reasons. The first is the opportunity to learn new things and travel; but a secondary, and sometimes more important reason, is the opportunity to meet new friends who have similar interests. Our Interest Groups bring together members who have similar interests or hope to meet others socially. From time to time we hear that our members would like to start a new Interest Group. The first step of the process is to find a group leader. This is the person who communicates with the group members, and works with the OLLI office to secure a meeting place and a regular meeting time. If you are interested in leading a group, or want to learn more about the process, contact Katherine Ellison at (989)964-4310 or email her at keelliso@SVSU.edu.

Saturday, September 30 from 9 am - 3 pm Life Force Energy--How It Impacts Our Daily Lives

Life force energy is known by many names in many cultures: prana, chi, universal life energy, ki, mana, orgone, vital, or subtle energy. It can affect us physically, emotionally, cognitively, and spiritually. Sometimes we have that energy in abundance, other times it is depleted. How do we deal with those times when energy is low? How can we activate our energy? How do we work with it - and WHY? Kaye Thomas-Hogan and guest speakers Jo and Jeff Currier return to OLLI with new techniques to help you experience fun and gentle ways to balance these energies for your highest good. Saturday: 9/30 • 9 am - 3 pm Location: Banquet Rooms Price: $60 Member/$70 Non-Member Price (after Sept. 20) for everyone $80 (Registration includes full-day program, buffet lunch and handouts)

Wednesday, September 13 Dave Kampfschulte, “Have I Got a Story to Tell You”

Finding meaning in our lives is an age old challenge. That meaning is found through the stories that are often hidden between the folds of everyday life. Join veteran educator and author, Dave Kampfschulte for this entertaining, interactive session as he relates his experiences in interviewing over 50 hospice patients for the My Life Story program. You will hear common life lessons, thoughts, and feelings that wind through our collective lives and the satisfaction of knowing one has had a life that matters. If you have a story – you have had a life!

Wednesday, October 11 Edwin A. Martini, “Agent Orange and the Legacies of the Vietnam War”

From 1961-1971 the United States and its allies sprayed nearly seventythree million liters of chemical agents over 2.5 million acres of southern and central Vietnam as part of an effort to defoliate the landscape and deny access to food supplies to enemy troops. About 62 percent of those chemicals consisted of Agent Orange, a mixture of the herbicides 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T later found to contain potentially dangerous levels of dioxin, one of the deadliest toxins ever created. While the use of Agent Orange was phased out in the early 1970s along with the rest of the herbicidal warfare program, the legacies of the chemical war continue to this day, with civilians and veterans from the United States, Vietnam, and elsewhere continuing to claim that Agent Orange is responsible for a variety of health concerns. This talk by Western Michigan University Professor Ed Martini, author of Agent Orange: History, Science, and the Politics of Uncertainty and Invisible Enemies: The American War on Vietnam 1975-2000, explores the history and legacies of Agent Orange and what they reveal about the ongoing impact of the Vietnam War.

Wednesday, November 8 Samantha McKenzie, “Adventures in Food Rescue”

How does good, healthy, nutritious food end up in landfills when there are so many people in need in our region? Find out what semi-truck accidents, already picked produce fields and thermometers have to do with creating opportunities for surplus food to be rescued. Over 150 programs exist in the Great Lakes Bay Region that are assisting people in meeting their most basic need… FOOD! Each of these agencies rely upon the generous support of our community and the efforts of Hidden Harvest to rescue food that would otherwise be wasted. Join us at the November meeting as Samantha McKenzie, President and CEO of Hidden Harvest tells the tale of how surplus food makes it to our neighbors in need. Find out about ways that you can support hunger solutions in the community, reduce your own food waste and the resources available for those dealing with food insecurity. History Depression Era Photography (162)

Perhaps the most iconic photograph of the Great Depression, if not the whole of 20th century American history, is best known as the “Migrant Mother,” taken by photographer Dorothea Lange. Working for the federal government, Lange and dozens of other photographers took over 250,000 images in support of the Resettlement Administration (1935-1937), Farm Security Administration (1937-1942), and the Office of War Information (1942-1943) to promote and support Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal policies. This course examines the creation of the New Deal agencies, how photographs served their goals and aims, the process of creating the images over nearly a decade, and how these images contribute to a better understanding of the Depression Era. Our goal is to examine the historical context in which these images were created to better understand the role of race, class, gender, ethnicity, regionalism, and the federal government on the experiences of average Americans during the Great Depression. Taught by SVSU adjunct faculty member Dr. Kathleen McGuire. Wednesdays: 10/4, 10/11, 10/18 • 11:30 am-1:30 pm Location: C129 Price: $23 Member/$46 Non-Member

The Age of Theodore Roosevelt (163)

Theodore Roosevelt (he disliked being called “Teddy”) is one of America’s favorite public figures. A man of faith and letters and a man of action, he is held in high esteem and affection by both conservatives and liberals. Why? We will study the major influences in his life, the choices he made, and how he affected the course of this country by examining the early years; his role as a soldier, governor, vice president, and president; as well as his last years and legacy. Course taught by Dr. John Pafford of Northwood University. Tuesdays: 9/12, 9/19, 9/26, 10/3 • 10 am-Noon Location: C129 Price: $27 Member/$54 Non-Member

Discussions of Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States (164)

First published in 1980, Howard Zinn’s review of American history, entitled A People’s History of the United States, instantly caught the attention of both historians and the public. The book reframes the narrative of American history, seeking to tell the story from the perspective of the “people,” instead of the “great men” whom he had felt disproportionately dominated the mythology and memory of the American past. While Zinn’s efforts have undoubtedly proved successful in introducing American audiences to a different version of a familiar story, his work has not been without detractors – both inside and outside of academia. This course will provide context for the creation of Zinn’s seminal work and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of his approach to American history, while examining the views and arguments he presents in the book. Based on the 2009 edition of A People’s History of the United States and broken into two sessions--fall & winter. This course will be taught by two members of the SVSU History Department, Dr. Brad Jarvis (F17) and Dr. Kathleen McGuire (W18), to provide a variety of perspectives on both the eras discussed and the questions that arise from Zinn’s approach to American history. The Westward Movement and the Indian Wars of the United States (166)

The history of the United States from its earliest colonial years until the end of the nineteenth century is one of nearly relentless conflict with the Native Americans. From the Pequot War in the 1630s through Custer’s “Last Stand” to the agony of Wounded Knee, the tortured relationship between the original people and the European emigrants presents a backstory, sometimes muted, sometimes fiery, to our development as a people. This course will outline the origins of this long struggle, touching on its most well-known points and illustrating how other regions of the New World managed to develop with less overt conflicts and lasting pain. This class is taught by OLLI member Thomas Donahue. Tuesdays: 11/7, 11/14, 11/21 • 9-11 am Location: C140 Price: $23 Member/$46 Non-Member

This class will cover the fighting on land and sea of not only the doomed Campaign at Gallipoli but also the Battle of Jutland and the Somme Offensive of 1916. These were some of the highest casualty battles of the war, all of which took place before the United States entered the war in 1917. After being rebuffed by Saginaw City leaders when he arrived in 1849, Jesse Hoyt bought 2,000 acres of swampland in East Saginaw. He set about to develop a city. He built the infrastructure--plank road, hotel, ship building, flour mill, banking, salt manufacturing, railroads, street railroad, and prominent business block. His legacy gave the park and library. His investments helped East Saginaw to become one of Michigan’s leading and important cities. Local author and historian Roselynn Ederer will discuss his development, gift, and impact on East Saginaw. Books will be available for purchase. Women’s Suffrage and the Iroquois (170)

Lucretia Mott and husband James visited the Iroquois living in New York and Canada in June of 1848, just prior to the first women’s voting rights convention in Seneca, New York. They learned that in the Iroquois Nation there was no such thing as women’s rights. Women’s equality was accepted in their society; in fact, women were leaders and revered as sources of wisdom. Ben Franklin’s influence on the development of our constitution included his observations that if a bunch of savages can have such a democracy, maybe we can learn something from them. Discussed will be the overriding psychological processes involved in the above struggles that took until 1920 to achieve. Class leader is Gary Hornfeld, LMSW, LMFT, DIPLOMATE, psychotherapist, marriage counselor in practice 45 years. Fridays: 10/6, 10/13 • 12-2 pm Location: C127 Price: $18 Member/$36 Non-Member

Literature The Art of Memoir: Capturing Watershed Moments (173)

A watershed moment is defined as a turning point in our lives, a moment that rises from all the other moments and impacts who we are. We collect these fascinating moments as we journey through life, but we are often puzzled when faced with the challenge of recording them. This workshop, led by SVSU Writing Center and Saginaw Community Writing Center tutors Alexa Foor and Madison Martin, will provide participants with the opportunity to learn about the art of memoir writing through open and creative dialogue while exploring the life events that have shaped who they are. Participants will have the chance to study memoir as well as express themselves creatively while receiving feedback on their work. A peer-review approach will be used. Wise Blood, Flannery O’Connor’s first novel (she wrote only two), concerns a World War II vet who resolves to form an anti-religious ministry in an eccentric Southern town. Diagramming: Grammar’s Secret Weapon (178)

Many people consider using correct grammar a threat. While they might be aware that a term such as “ain’t” or a phrase along the lines of “I seen” should be avoided, they are a bit hazy as to why. Diagramming can remove those clouds. This basic grammar course with OLLI member Rose Kohut incorporates the art of diagramming to help explain many sticky grammar rules. Even if you have a good grasp on the mechanics of the English language, diagramming can also be—incredibly—a pleasure! Try this non-threatening system of helping your speaking and writing. Hello, Jerry! The Story of Jerry Herman (182)

Though the composer is a winner of a Kennedy Center Honor, three Tony Awards, two Grammys and an Emmy, there might be those who wouldn’t immediately recognize Jerry Herman’s name. That quandary could be solved by supplying only two of the musician’s works: Hello, Dolly, and Mame. Although those two claim the honor of being his best-known shows, Herman in fact composed the scores for a dozen Broadway musicals. The OLLI class “Hello, Jerry!” will be an investigation of the life and works of the prolific Broadway composer, with the usher for the challenge being Frankenmuth’s own Keith Spaulding. Religion Martin Luther and the Reformation: The First 100 Years (183)

2017 marks the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his 95 Theses on the door of the church in Wittenberg, traditionally seen as the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. But was the break from Rome inevitable? Luther’s opponents didn’t think so, claiming that he would burn within a month, and Luther himself claimed he did not intend to set up a rival church. This course explores how an obscure monk from a remote province of the Holy Roman Empire split the unity of the Christian world. After years of rebellions and religious wars, the once unthinkable fragmentation of belief became accepted fact in 1648 with the Treaty of Westphalia. The class will be led by retired SVSU history professor, Bob Braddock. Tuesdays: 10/24, 10/31, 11/7 • 12-2 pm Location: C140 Price: $23 Member/$46 Non-Member

History of God (184)

During the spring session, we took a test drive of the Learning Co. course entitled “The Meaning of Life: Perspectives from the World’s Great Intellectual Traditions.” Professor Garfield took us on an entertaining as well as challenging venture through the general discussion of meaning as well as a view of meaning in the Indian Bhagavad-Gita and the Hebrew Book of Job. This initial taste left us wanting more. This fall we will continue this journey and focus on the ancient world with Aristotle, Confucius, Buddhism, and Zen, for example. New people should not fear coming into this ongoing class since each unit of the course brings great insight and discussion, and especially since we have not yet found the answer to the meaning of life!!! We could use your help! The class will be led by OLLI member Ron Taylor. Intro to Philosophy I (186)

This course will focus on the core areas of philosophy (such as ethics, metaphysics, philosophy of religion, etc.), and we will consider some of the problems that arise within these areas. Things we will explore include “the big questions” like: Are there any moral truths? What is the nature of reality? Do we have free will? Does God exist? etc. Many people have very strong beliefs on these issues, but most have not questioned what they believe or thought about why they think what they do. The goals of this course are (1) to make people question their beliefs and determine if they have good reason to believe what they do and (2) to develop an understanding of what philosophy is and hopefully develop an appreciation for the discipline. Taught by SVSU adjunct faculty member Alex Gromak. Thursdays: 9/7, 9/14, 9/21, 9/28, 10/5 • 12:30-2:30 pm Location: C140 Price: $36 Member/$66 Non-Member

See Yellow, Save Green (188)

Are you driving a flexible-fuel vehicle and don’t know it? If you aren’t sure, then you’re not alone! Although there are millions of flexible-fuel vehicles on the road today, most owners are unaware that they have one. Flexible-fuel vehicles can operate using either gasoline or ethanol. Ethanol is now made in Michigan, which positively impacts this state’s economy. Human Impact on Mother Earth (192)

We are living in the midst of a revolution. It is a dizzying experience, a difficult time to have a clear focus. What will be the consequences of current decision-making? The technology revolution is causing rapid changes in communication and transport, increasing the amount of accessible information both in depth and scope. Most importantly, it is altering the fabric of social relationships and the economic destinies of people on a global scale. Human geography and human culture are two broad areas of study that can bring clarity and insight into how humankind has gotten into this bold and brash 21st century. We will use selected lectures from Understanding Cultural and Human Geography by Professor Paul Robbins of the University of Wisconsin as a guide to our discussion. Class led by OLLI member Bob Enszer, retired science teacher. Thursdays: 9/7, 9/14, 9/21, 9/28 • 1-3 pm Location: C129 Price: $27 Member/$54 Non-Member
