Wednesday, May 11, 2016 Climate Action: The Latest Scientific Evidence
Every week television brings us images of glaciers melting, devastating floods in some areas, and creeping droughts in others. Year after year scientists present more and more evidence that climate disruption is accelerated by human activity. This meeting will feature three of the leading local advocates for using science as a way to work through the various positions on climate change and the ways that individuals can affect changes that will surely need to come in the future. Our moderator will be Patrick Race, founder of the Lone Tree Council and inventor of the Climate Stick. Peter Sinclair, who has been deeply involved in issues of environment and energy since the 1980s, and has given countless presentations on climate change at schools, universities, churches and civic groups, will speak. Dr. Jim Crissman, a research toxicologic veterinary pathologist who has worked in chemical safety and drug development for more than 30 years and founding leader of the Midland chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby, will also present.
Wednesday, June 29, 2016 (afternoon meeting)
The Pigeon Creek Shakespeare Company’s The School for Scandal
The intrigues of such aptly named characters as Lady Sneerwell, Sir Joseph Surface, Landy Candour, and Sir Benjamin Backbite have amused theater audiences for more than two centuries. They are the invention of the Irish-born playwright Richard Brinseley Sheridan, and they unfold, collide, and backfire hilariously in this masterpiece. The School of Scandal is still considered by many to be the best comedy of manners in English. OLLI is pleased to offer this amusing play performed by the talented Pigeon Creek Shakespeare Company as our monthly meeting in June. Founded in 1998, the Grand Haven-based Company is Michigan’s only year-round, touring Shakespeare company.
Tuesday, August 9, 2016 Michigan’s Passenger Pigeon: Gone Forever
From the 1830s and through the 1890s, the passenger pigeon was the most beautiful bird and the dominate species in the state of Michigan. It was also the most hunted bird from April into September, depending on its roosting patterns. Professional hunters and game dealers came from New York, Texas, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Ohio to get in on the hunt. This program will follow a time line of historic events in Michigan’s history which led to the extinction of the passenger pigeon. Al and David Eicher with Program Sources International created this unique lecture and visual presentation about this 70-year event in Michigan’s history. It features beautiful artwork, specimens from the Cranbrook Institute of Sciences, plus sounds of nature as it was in the middle of the 1800s.

In many of our earlier sessions on religion and related philosophies we have experienced situations in which we have seen what appears to be the human brain generating false observations, distorted memories and beliefs based on unreliable data. Brain science has advanced to the point that we are aware that our minds are very deceptive and we need to be aware of its little “tricks.” In this course, we will use the Teaching Company course, “Your Deceptive Mind: A Science Guide to Critical Thinking Skills” by Professor Steven Novella, to help us understand this new science so we can better evaluate our course material in future classes. Join us for a critical look at this fascinating three-pound lump we carry on our shoulders. The class will be led by OLLI member Ron Taylor Thursdays: May 26, June 2 & 9 9:30 a.m. - Noon Price: $23 Members; $46 Non-Members Room: C129

Meeting Mr. Roosevelt (358)
Franklin Roosevelt was one of the best-liked Presidents of the twentieth century and is ranked within the top three Presidents in all of American history, yet the political shell revealed little of the man himself. Famous for his complex New Deal that restructured the American economy post-Great Depression and for leading the United States through World War II, Roosevelt’s true character remained a mystery to other politicians, as well as his staff, friends and even family. Coming from a privileged background with an overbearing mother, scandalous love life, and devastating illness, Roosevelt carried on his political ambitions under the guise of a virile and jovial man, shadowing the complexities of his true inner personality. Despite this conundrum, Roosevelt created the ideal of the modern American presidency that serves as a model even today. The class will be led by historian and SVSU adjunct professor Dr. Katherine Ellison. Tuesdays: June 28, July 5, 12 & 19 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C129

For centuries people have taken action against valid laws of sovereign nations, states, cities, and localities. They have through the process of civil disobedience intentionally violated laws in order to generate public opinion sufficient to ultimately mandate change. Civil disobedience played a significant role in India during British Rule, in the United States during the anti-war movement surrounding Vietnam, with the trial of Daniel Ellsberg, the civil rights movement of the 1960s, in South Africa during apartheid and in countless other settings. In this course we will analyze civil disobedience from a legal, moral, ethical, academic and social perspective. This is both a “history of” and a “how to” course. (Being arrested is an optional activity!) The class is led by Jim Johnson, a political science professor and attorney. There will be a one-hour break for lunch. Tuesday & Wednesday: May 17 & 18 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Price: $27 Members: $54 Non-Members Room: C224
The American Civil War (360)
The Civil War conflict led to cultural and political changes that have reverberated to the present. There were more deaths in it than any other war in U.S. history. The class will be led by Northwood University history professor, John Pafford. Tuesdays: May 31, June 7, 14 & 21 10 a.m. - Noon Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C129

Myths of the Lost Cause (362)
Days of Rage (364)
At the close of the American Civil War much writing emerged from Southern pens explaining why the South lost the war. There was a purpose to these writings and this class will explain what they were and will investigate them to determine if they constituted “good” history or were merely falsifications of what actually transpired. You will be invited after each class to share some of your own ideas for further discussion. We will touch upon slavery, R.E. Lee, U.S. Grant, veteran reunions and many other topics. The class will be led by retired school teacher and OLLI member Dan Marino. Thursdays: July 7, 14, 21 & 28 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C129
From 1968 - 1974 hundreds of thousands of American youth took to the streets of America to protest the war in Vietnam and U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia. The movement evolved from passive campus sit-ins to violent confrontations with police, National Guard and other forces. The Students for a Democratic Society, Weather Underground, and smaller but incredibly militant groups engaged in massive protests throughout the nation including bombings, and acts of intense violence. While controversial, the movement ultimately changed the direction of the American populace with respect to the Vietnam War. Not since the Civil War had the nation faced internal struggle in the form of the antiwar movement. This course will study what truly was “The Days of Rage.” The class will be led by Jim Johnson, a political science professor and attorney. There will be a one-hour break for lunch. Thursday & Friday: August 4 & 5 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C224

Al and David Eicher, research historians and television producers, spent a year and a half researching and gathering photographs about the Orphan Train Riders in Michigan. This class will feature the lecture and video documentary about this event in Michigan history. You will learn about the selection process and what it was like to be an Orphan Train rider. Tuesday: August 9 • 1:30 - 3 p.m. Price: $8 Members; $16 Non-Members Room: C129
