MONTHLY MEETINGS Agenda for All Monthly Meetings
8:45 a.m. – Registration, Socializing and Light Refreshments 9:30 a.m. – Announcements and Program Begins Wednesday, May 13 – I Am Dying to Talk to You Dave Kampfschulte Dave Kampfschulte has worked in the hospice field for 24 years as a volunteer and educator. Spend a thoughtful and entertaining session with him as he relates his experiences of interacting and initiating conversations with patients at the end of life and their families. Stories range from the unusual to those that will bring tears to your eyes. You will leave with unexpected new insights about a subject that is usually avoided at all costs, but one we all must face. Get a glimpse of how others have handled it walking the path before you. You might just be pleasantly surprised. Join Dave after the meeting by signing up for class 353 “How to Hear What is Not Being Said.” Wednesday, June 10 – Women’s Contribution’s in WWI and WWII: Stories from the Home Front Tawny Ryan Nelb Whether it was serving soldiers at the local canteen, working in a local business, or canning vegetables for home consumption, women rolled up their sleeves to help support our troops and allies in the war effort. Women entered the workforce in huge numbers especially in World War II proving not only that they could do the work but for many, this was a springboard to take advantage of future employment and leadership opportunities closed to them previously. This talk will focus on Midland, Michigan as just one example of women’s participation in the war effort. Tawny Ryan Nelb is an archivist/historian based in Midland with 45 years of experience and has written over 50 articles and 5 books on local history and archival practice. She has provided archival management and preservation of historical and vital records for archives and museums and provides archival services for families and individuals. Wednesday, August 12 – Medicare Jae Oh Medicare is the cornerstone of retirement planning in the U.S. Retirement planning includes a number of components: controlling costs is vital, and healthcare costs can dominate the list, with recent estimates ranging between $130,000 and $150,000 for a person turning 65 years old. Jae Oh, author of Maximize Your Medicare, Certified Financial Planner™ explains why basic misunderstandings about Medicare lead to confusion, which create errors in controlling these costs. Advertisements, the general media and politics are combining to make understanding Medicare more difficult, as they distract people from correctly understanding Medicare and healthcare, in general. Mr. Oh will provide basic ideas on why these misunderstandings persist — and provide key takeaways — so that people can identify what is important in personal decision-making.

(364) Women in the Ancient World
Join us in a survey of the lives of women in Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. We’ll look at some of the stories involving famous women, like Hatshepsut, pharaoh of Egypt, Aspasia, wife of the Greek general Pericles, Livia, wife of Augustus, the first Roman Emperor and Agrippina, sister of Caligula and mother of Nero. We’ll also see what life was like for the average woman in these societies: the unnamed daughters, wives and mothers who helped to keep the great cities and societies going on a day-to-day level. From the highest of the upper classes to the most common of the commoners, we’ll see how things have changed (and what hasn’t) and how the lives of women who lived thousands of years ago still have an effect on our modern culture. Instructor: Christina Szilagyi, Veteran Instructor Thursdays • 6/18, 6/25, 7/2, 7/9 • 1:30-3:30 p.m. Location: C140 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members

This course will briefly discuss the organizations of both Resistance Fighters and Collaborators during WWII. SPRING/SUMMER 2020 CLASSES (367) From Trees to Lumber in the Saginaw Valley
The need for lumber lead to the development of the Saginaw Valley. The supply of timber was expected to be unlimited and was easy to get to market due to the Saginaw Bay Watershed. This class will look at the journey of cutting the trees through getting them to the sawmills and finally being loaded on ships and transported to markets. The “unlimited” supply of trees was soon logged over, helped along by new developments in sawmill technology and the lumber era ended by the 1890’s. The instructors will also discuss the life of a logger, the boom companies, the mills and the products the logs were used for. Instructor: Chris Eckerle & Don Comtois, OLLI Members Mondays 5/11, 5/18 • 10 a.m.-Noon Location: C129 Price: $18 for members • $22 for non-members
(368) Give ‘Em Hell! The Life and Presidency of Harry S Truman Just a farm boy from Missouri, Harry Truman would rise to political fame as the man who decided to drop the first atomic bomb on Japan and desegregate the military. In this course, peek into Truman’s life as a Missourian, a politician and a president. Learn about his hot temper, hobbies and unique ability to cross the political aisle in order to get things done. Truman’s presidency may have been overshadowed by Franklin Roosevelt’s domination of the country in the 1930s and 40s, but his legacy is one worthy of the history books. Instructor: Katherine Ellison, Ph.D. OLLI Director Thursdays • 8/20, 8/27 • 2-4 p.m. Location: C129 Price: Free for members • $22 for non-members
LEGAL STUDIES (369) Tooting the Wrong Horn: The Michigan Whistleblowers and False Claim Acts
Are you fascinated by people like Daniel Ellsberg or Edward Snowden and the idea of whistleblowing—revealing illicit acts by government agencies or organizations? Have you ever wondered what the ramifications could be for whistleblowing and if the law will protect these agents of truth? Whistleblowers revealed the Watergate Affair that led to Nixon’s resignation, the Monica Lewinsky affair and Whitewater investigation that led to Clinton’s impeachment and the more recent WikiLeaks scandal along with countless other truths that exposed government corruption and corporate crimes. Join OLLI’s favorite attorneys for a discussion of the laws that protect whistleblowers and the process of revealing high crimes. Either way, you are invited to join us for this, the most recent in our ongoing series of courses on Shakespeare’s greatest plays. Learn how to play an instrument that is small in size, yet big in sound. The instructor will take you step-by-step through the fundamentals of playing harmonica, arguably the most soulful of all instruments. Among other things, you will learn how to play chords, single notes, simple rhythms and songs, as well as how to make the harmonica “talk.” Music theory and the ability to read music are not required, only the desire to make and share music with other aspiring harmonica players. You will need a 10-hole diatonic harmonica in the Key of C major, which can be purchased from online music retailers such as Guitar Center, Musicians Friend and Amazon.com. The instructor recommends either the Hohner Special 20 harmonica , or the Lee Oskar major diatonic harmonica, both in the key of C-major. SPRING/SUMMER 2020 CLASSES (374) Jazz Journey
To today’s music listeners, smooth jazz is a much-maligned genre and it doesn’t look like the situation is going to change anytime soon. That’s unfortunate because many of the key artists and performers are supremely gifted instrumentalists and vocalists whose talents deserve recognition. This class will utilize PowerPoint slides, videos and handouts to describe the reasons that the grooves these musicians make are denigrated as “dinner jazz,” why ardent jazz purists look down upon smooth jazz music and list those outlets where smooth jazz fans can still enjoy the music. Instructor: Kelly Currie, Veteran Instructor Mondays • 7/6, 7/13, 7/20, 7/27 • 6-8 p.m. Location: C129 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members
RELIGION (375) Impact of Doraster on Monotheism (History of God)
As we have studied the tenets and rituals of the three monotheistic religions we have crossed many areas that suggest they are intricately connected. This was again confirmed as we recently reviewed each religion’s rituals concerning death, dying and concepts of the afterlife. For this session we will review three courses from past sessions to bring the history of the Zoroastrian (Iran) in the period around 1,000 BCE into focus. We will look at the exposure to these ideas by the Jewish people’s during their exile to Babylonia in 585 BCE which in turn filtrated the Christian faith in the first century CE. The third part brings the Islamic faith as it developed in the early 600’s CE, from their Jewish/Christian exposure. Instructor: Ron Taylor, OLLI Member Thursdays 5/21, 5/28, 6/4 • 9:30 a.m.-Noon Location: C129 Price: $23 for members • $46 for non-members
SCIENCE & NATURE (376) See Yellow…Save Green!
Are you driving a flexible-fuel vehicle and don’t know it? If you aren’t sure, then you’re not alone! Although there are millions of flexible-fuel vehicles on the road today, most owners are unaware that they have one. Flexible fuel vehicles can operate using gasoline and ethanol. Ethanol is currently produced in Michigan, which positively impacts this state’s economy. This class will utilize PowerPoint slides and handouts to discuss the methods to determine whether your vehicle is a flexible-fuel vehicle; discuss the operational, health and environmental advantages of using ethanol over gasoline; describe how using ethanol could save drivers hundreds of dollars annually in fuel costs; and introduce the Yellow Hose campaign along with those participating locations where you can purchase ethanol for at least seventy cents per gallon less than gasoline in Michigan. Class will be led by Kelly Currie, an adjunct mathematics instructor and alumnus of SVSU, published author and previous flexible-fuel vehicle owner. Instructor: Kelly Currie, Veteran Instructor Wednesdays • 7/8, 7/15, 7/22, 7/29 • 6-8 p.m. Location: C129 Price: $27 for members • $54 for non-members
