Hip to be Square (or not!)
Presenter: Tarek Taha, MD - Orthopedic Trauma Do you have pain in your hips? Are you having trouble sitting and watching a movie or going for a car ride? Do you roll from side to side at night because of the ache in your hips? Normally, all the parts of the knee or hip joint work together and the joint moves easily and without pain. However, disease or injury can disturb the normal functioning of a joint, which can result in hip pain, muscle weakness and limited movement. And with longer life expectancies and greater activity levels, Dr. Taha will offer information on treatments and prevention of hip pain to restore mobility and improve quality of life. Dr. Taha, fellowship trained orthopedic trauma surgeon, specializes in complex hip socket fractures and injuries.

The Status of Fracking in Michigan
Lee Smith, Certified Petroleum Geologist, Optimal Value Energy LLC “Fracking” refers to applying pressure to hydraulically fracture subsurface rock strata and inject proppants (sand or ceramic material) into the cracks to keep them open. High volume hydraulic fracturing (hvf) allows the recovery of hydrocarbons (gas, natural gas liquids, and oil) from rock strata that were previously considered unable to produce hydrocarbons in commercial quantities. At this meeting you will receive an historical overview of fracking technology and learn about current Michigan activity. You will also learn about the economic issues which surround the practice, the legal challenges that drilling companies face, and the current status of public policy efforts. Our speaker is Lee Smith, a Certified Petroleum Geologist and owner of the consulting firm, Optimal Value Energy LLC. Lee has written a series of articles on fracking for the Midland Daily News and has taught OLLI classes.

Despite Detroit’s recent bankruptcy, there are many efforts underway to redefine and revitalize the downtown area. Our speaker, John Gallagher, a veteran journalist and author, has written two books which provide many urban renewal strategies. He will discuss these strategies at our monthly meeting and also consider how Detroit’s challenges compare to other postindustrial cities in the nation. Gallagher’s book, Reimagining Detroit: Opportunities for Redefining an American City, was named by the Huffington Post as among the best social and political books of 2010. His most recent book is called Revolution Detroit: Strategies for Urban Reinvention. Born in New York City, he joined the Detroit Free Press in 1987 to cover urban and economic redevelopment efforts.
Wednesday, April 9, 2014 Understanding Islam: Overcoming Fear, Prejudice and Ignorance about the World's Second Largest Religion James Randall Johnson, SVSU & Northwood Professor and Attorney
Islam is the second largest world religion after Christianity. 23% of the population of the world today are Muslims, with 49 nations being now defined as Islamic or Muslim. Islam is a major religion in Michigan with Dearborn being the home of more Arab-Americans than any other city in the United States. In an increasingly global society we are linked to diverse populations around the world and the necessity of developing an understanding and appreciation of other cultures is critical. Why is it then that Americans seem to not only not understand Islam but increasingly take meaningless and sometimes unconstitutional measures against it? This discussion will explore the depth of prejudice and misunderstanding of Islam in the United States today and why we need to change. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Improving healthy behaviors and healthy living can play an important role in preventing and/or reducing the consequences of chronic diseases, and increasing life expectancy. We want to fill you in on the secrets to healthy living! Join Meghan Baruth, Becca Schlaff, and Renee MacMillian from the Health Science and Kinesiology departments at SVSU in learning how physical activity, proper diet, and other health behaviors can increase your quality of life now and in the many, many years to come.

Attracting Wildlife with Native Landscaping (203)
Four walls and a roof might constitute a house, but you don’t necessarily want to live in every house you see! Likewise, birds, butterflies and other wildlife might pass THROUGH your yard, but do they really want to spend much time there? This threesession class will give you the details you need for determining what native plants and natural features (water, rocks, shelter, housing, etc.) you could add to create a wildlife habitat in your backyard. Which specific trees, flowers, vines and shrubs are the best food sources for birds? Which ones create the best habitat for butterflies and other native pollinators? And really, is there ANYTHING a deer won’t eat?! (The short answer is “no”.) Naturalist Janea Little, of the private nature consulting firm Little’s Touch of Nature, will help you in making selections and plans for your native landscaping efforts, as well as provide helpful tips in removing or preventing certain wildlife you might not want to attract after all.
Fridays: January 31, February 7 & 14 • 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Price: $22 Members; $44 Non-Members Room: C140
Optimizing Brain Health (202)
These days we are often advised to exercise our bodies in order to stay fit, feel better, look younger and live longer. Wouldn’t it be wise to do the same for our brains so we could enjoy more years of sharp memory and high mental function? The class will focus on brain health -- how to nurture it, and how to prolong it. We will consider the advice of Dr. Richard Restak, Clinical Professor of Neurology at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, as he speaks on the topic of “Better Living” in the Great Courses videos we will use. In addition, we will draw upon other sources on brain health which have multiplied with recent scientific research on the brain and its function.

Beowulf: A Second Look at an Old English Saga (251)
Beowulf is the anchor for any serious study of Anglo-Saxon poetry. Composed around the 8th century, it survives in only one manuscript which was copied in West Saxon dialect around the 10th century. The 3,000+ line poem describes the battles of Beowulf, a Geatish hero against three powerful adversaries: the humanoid Grendel, his mother, and a dragon. Though pagan, a strong thread of Christianity runs through the poem to shade its compelling narrative. We will read Beowulf in modern English translation. Writing Your Life (254)
We live and experience the world through our own eyes, heart, and mind. No two chapters are the same. Whether it’s one small episode, or a lifetime of memories, personal writing is a great way to recall, reflect, and share. This five-week class will concentrate on developing ideas and writing in ways to engage both writer and reader. Writing prompts will be used, which will make the process fun and stress-free. Those who took this class in the fall are welcome to join us again and new participants are also welcome. The class will be led by Ron Brown, a Delta and SVSU composition instructor.

Religion, Meditation & Psychology History & Philosophy of God (255)
During the winter semester we will continue our discussion of comparative religion using The Teaching Company’s Dr. Kimball as our expert guide. Our focus will be on Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam as we explore the similarities and differences in ritual activities, sacrifices, goals of the different groups, response to sin and many other interesting aspects of this rich global topic. Our goal is to have a more complete knowledge of these five major faith systems as well as to better understand how crucial it is to reach outside our own belief system in order to recognize the vital role cross-cultural acceptance will have in the successful globalization of the planet. The class will be led by OLLI member Ron Taylor. Thursdays: January 16, 23, 30, February 6, 13 & 20 • 9:30 a.m. - Noon Price: $37 Members; $67 Non-Members Room: C129
En La Lucha: Seeking God Around the World (256)
If you asked a mujerista how she was doing on any given day, she would probably say “En la lucha” or “I’m hanging in there.” Theologian Ada Maria Isasi-Diaz would say the woman is making theology, forging an understanding of herself and her relationship to God in the experience of her every day life. Other cultures around the world have sought God in ways that are different from and, in some ways, the same as those familiar to us. Join us for a whirlwind tour as we meet Mercy Oduyoye in Ghana, A. Sung Park in Korea, Paul Persall in Hawaii, and Ada Maria Isasi-Diaz. At our final stop in New York City, we will ask Dorothy Day the question: “What would a ‘made in USA’ theology look like?” This class will be led by SVSU professor Judith Thompson. Fridays: January 31, February 7, 14, 21 & 28 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Price: $32 Members; $64 Non-Members Room: ES117

I Am - An Introspective Look at Who We Are, and How We Can Change the World (259)
The documentary I Am is the story of a successful Hollywood film director, Tom Shadyac, who experienced a life threatening head injury and his ensuing journey to try and answer how he as an individual, and we as a race, could improve the way we live and walk in the world. Join Linda Thomas, RN CBT QNRT, owner of Trinity Holistic Health as we watch the documentary and then relate the concept of this film to our own lives. We will be attempting to answer three main questions about ourselves: Who am I? What is wrong in the world? And what can I do about it? Through introspection and group discussion, we will attempt to answer these three questions as we discuss what gifts each of us possess that could impact the world around us in a positive way, leaving the world better than we found it.

Chemical Warfare: A Formula for Disaster (262)
During the summer of 1918, a group of scientists, physicians and militarists converged on Midland, Michigan. The outcomes of that meeting have been cloaked in secrecy for nearly a century. Dave Rogers, Bay City author of a new book on the production of chemical weapons in the United States, tells how a feisty red-haired Irish nurse brought the drama to a head, and how incidents in a first aid clinic, and deaths of soldiers, led to misguided decisions in Washington that threatened the defense capability of the nation in World War I. We will consider how policies shaped by U.S. leaders nearly 100 years ago, declaring chemical weapons “more humane” than explosives, contributed to today’s poison gas dilemma in Syria and how disposal blunders left environmental time bombs in the ocean. Fact of fiction? Judge for yourself! The class is based on Dave’s new book, The G-34 Paradox: Inside Army Mustard Gas Scandals at Dow Chemical in World War I.
WWII: Part I (264)
Anyone knowing history could have looked at the settlements imposed in 1919, after the end of World War I, and foreseen the likelihood that another war would ensure. Just over 20 years later, the Second World War began, a war in which over 46 million people would die. In this class, the first in a twopart series, we will explore: the factors which fueled the war, including the rise and spread of dictatorships in Italy, Japan, the Soviet Union and Germany; the beginning of the war in 1939-40 in Poland, Finland, Denmark and Norway; the spread of the war in 1940 to Western Europe, the Balkans and Africa; and the period of 1941-June 1942, when Pearl Harbor brings in the U.S., and the tide turns. This class will be led by Northwood University professor John Pafford.

Experiencing Rome: A Visual Exploration of Antiquity’s Greatest Empire (266)
The ancient Roman world, which lasted more than 1,000 years, and spanned three continents at its height has left us enduring images of its power and influence. Working on the premise that Rome needed to “impress” its mostly illiterate subjects, Dr. Stephen Tuck, a professor of classics, guides us through that ancient culture’s cultural and practical contributions to its far flung empire. OLLI member Barb Mitchell will be your facilitator for this fifth exploration of the Great Courses series which will examine imperial forums and monuments, the immense bath structures, Roman engineering and the contributions (beyond fighting) of the Roman military. You need not have taken any of the previous classes to enjoy this segment. You will have access to previously viewed DVDs. Current Events The Intelligence Community II: PSYOPS (267)
As a continuation of our examination of the Intelligence Community, we will examine the little known or understood world of “PSYOPS.” Psychological Operations is the process whereby our government intentionally communicates selected (usually wrong) information to targeted audiences designed to influence their emotions, motives and reasoning, with the goal of thereby altering the behavior of individuals, groups, organizations, and governments. PSYOPS represents to a large degree the “dark side” of intelligence work. It is critical in both peace and war time. We will examine how various U.S. intelligence agencies use PSYOPS to achieve their objectives. The class will be led by Jim Johnson, an adjunct political science professor and attorney.
World Update (268)
The global political landscape changes more often than the weather. Political, economic and policy strategies evolve daily, if not more often. The class will be led by Jim Johnson, an adjunct political science professor and attorney. Fridays: March 28, April 4 & 11 • 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Price: $22 Members; $44 Non-Members Room: C224

Class & Trip Cancellation Policy
Best of Behind Closed Doors (273)
Due to the fact that quite a few members register for classes and trips and then change their mind and cancel, we have instituted this cancellation policy. This policy has been approved by the advisory board. We hope this will reduce the amount of time OLLI staff spends processing cancellations, and contacting members on waiting lists.
Over the years, our Behind Closed Doors class has visited some especially interesting organizations. This class includes visits to four of these including: the Dow Event Center, built in 1972, which currently hosts the Saginaw Spirit, a Broadway Series, and many other public and private events; Billy’s Contracting of Saginaw, which offers complete sitework and excavating services, roll-off and storage containers and dumpster rentals; Nagel Paper & Box of Saginaw, established in 1924, this family-owned company offers a wide variety of paper products including tubes, cans and cores; and Delta College Public Broadcasting, where we will tour the television and radio stations. After each tour, you will have an opportunity to join the class for lunch at a nearby restaurant. Your hosts are OLLI members Dan and Maggie Kempf. This class is held off campus and you are responsible for your own transportation.
