SVSU-OLLI Interest Groups Over the years, we have learned that people join OLLI for two major reasons. The first is the opportunity to learn new things and travel; but a secondary, and sometimes more important reason, is the opportunity to meet new friends who have similar interests. Our Interest Groups bring together members who have similar interests or hope to meet others socially. From time to time we hear that our members would like to start a new Interest Group. The Current Interest Groups: first step of the process is to find a group leader. 14th Annual WinterFest Wednesday, January 11, 2017 SVSU - Curtiss Hall

Laugh ... and Let It Go: The Joy of Aging Presenter: Mike Kiefer, Retired Trainer, Businessman & OLLI Member Since early childhood, we’ve been told to “act your age.” While aging is beyond our control, how we age is up to us. Advancing in age brings new possibilities, fresh beginnings, a wealth of appreciation, and a depth of gratitude. The wondrous world around us and the special people in our life are all reasons to rejoice and be thankful. Adopting a lighter attitude and seeing the fun side of everyday situations increases our ability to creatively deal with ambiguous and constantly changing circumstances, regardless of our age. This presentation will be an exuberant and restorative experience that uses gentle humor to look beyond age markers to discover that we are so much more than our thoughts, beliefs, feelings and expectations. Our presenter is OLLI member Mike Kiefer. He has entertained, trained, energized and motivated local, state, and national audiences. He is also a former CEO of the Saginaw Chamber of Commerce, small business owner, and an active community volunteer.

Bring a Friend! This program is free for members and potential members – there is no need to pre-register. Guests may attend one monthly meeting without a charge. If guests come more than once they either need to join OLLI or pay a $10 fee per meeting. OLLI members who bring a guest will be put in a drawing to win a $10 voucher, and their guest will also win a free membership!

OLLI New Member Orientation Tuesday, March 28 from 1:30 - 3:30 This is your chance to learn more about OLLI and SVSU. You’ll meet the OLLI staff and advisory board members and also take a tour of the SVSU campus. Although there is no cost for the orientation and tour, you must register so we know how many to expect. Wednesday, February 8, 2017 OLLI Salutes Jo Brownlie Presenters: Past and Current OLLI Chairs SVSU introduced its new Institute for Learning in Retirement at a Fall Kick-Off Symposium in September, 2001. By the end of that first year the Institute had 250 members and offered 46 classes. Fast forward to 2017. Our organization is now approaching 2,000 members, we offer 250 classes a year, 50 trips, and 21 Interest Groups. At our February meeting we will review our many milestones and achievements under the innovative leadership of Jo Brownlie, our OLLI Director since day one. Since Jo will be retiring in February, this will be a good time to reflect and consider how OLLI has enriched the lives of hundreds of people throughout our region. Whether you are a new OLLI member, a charter member, or fall somewhere in between, please join us as we take this opportunity to celebrate and thank Jo for her contributions and passion for our OLLI.

Wednesday, March 8, 2017 A Place Called Presque Isle Presenter: Janet Young, Author Our March speaker, Janet Young, is the author of two books about Presque Isle, A Place Called Presque Isle and Grand Vintage Resorts. She began her writing journey by exploring the genealogy of Presque Isle’s inhabitants listed on the 1850 federal census, and a path to their stories was found. Descendants generously shared their family stories that have been passed down through generations, through centuries-old letters, personal journals, business ledgers and photographs. You will learn about the lives of those who came to this isolated peninsula in the late 1800s. You’ll hear stories about the first steamboat wooding station, early commercial fisherman, shipwrecks, wildfires, and the history of lighthouses and the light keepers. Janet will also share information about some of the vintage resorts built on Grand Lake, the earliest vacationers and its first shooting club. She will share photographs and illustrations from the books at the meeting.

Mindfulness Meditation (265)

Religion & Meditation

Mindfulness meditation helps us learn to live in the present moment with non-judgmental awareness and acceptance of what is. It helps us to flow more easily with the ups and downs of our lives. It is a practice which helps to create a more peaceful mind and heart open to deeper wisdom. Controlled clinical studies of mindfulness-based meditation have documented reduction of physical and emotional distress and an increase in greater health and well being. Our leader is Nan Spence, who for the past 11 years has studied mindfulness with respected teachers and has been authorized to teach it by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Nan holds a Master’s Degree in Theology with an emphasis in spirituality. The class maximum is 16.

History of God: Islam (263) As our world continues to shrink and all are required to embrace ways to co-exist with people of different cultures, religions, and government styles, we have decided to revisit our study of Islam from several years ago. The Great Courses video entitled, Great Religions: Islam, hosted by Professor John Esposito of Georgetown University will be our expert guide. Islam, the world’s second largest religion at some 1.5+ billion adherents and on track to pass Christianity by 2050, is a major force in the world’s future. The purpose of the course is to improve our knowledge so we can properly understand this significant cultural force. The class will be led by OLLI member Ron Taylor.

Centering Prayer: Introductory Workshop (266) Centering Prayer is a simple method in which we open ourselves to God and consent to God’s presence and action within us. This prepares our hearts and minds to receive the gift of contemplation. It is a way of paying attention to the Divine Indwelling Spirit who resides at the center of our being. It also helps us to develop a deeper relationship with the Divine. Nan Spence is uniquely qualified to teach Centering Prayer as she holds a master’s degree in counseling and theology and works as a psychotherapist and spiritual counselor in Saginaw. She studied Centering Prayer with Thomas Keating, a Cistercian monk who designed this form of prayer.

Christianity, Cults & Other Religions (264) This class, led by OLLI member Louise Hendricks, will draw upon the video series Christianity, Cults & Religions by Paul Carden, a longtime specialist in the field of cults and new religions around the world. This study explains the history, background, and beliefs of the largest world religions and cults including Islam (Sunni & Shi’ite Muslims), Buddhism, Hinduism, Mormonism, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Spirituality, New Age and more. The Roles of Women in Early Christianity (267)

in the world, their introduction into America and into Michigan, and their earliest churches in Saginaw city and county. Some religious highlights from World, American, and Michigan history will be discussed.

Last winter, OLLI member Barb Mitchell taught a class entitled Mary Magdalene and the Women of Early Christianity. This winter she will be continuing her focus on those early Christian women, going beyond those named in the New Testament to women of the first three centuries. As Rome is now studying the possible return of women as deacons, this is a very timely as well as fascinating look back at the real origin of the Christian clergy, in both the East and the West.

History

Martin Luther and the Reformation: The First 100 Years (268) 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s nailing his 95 Theses on the door of the church in Wittenberg, traditionally seen as the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. But was the break from Rome inevitable? Luther’s opponents didn’t think so, claiming that he would burn within a month, and Luther himself claimed he did not intend to set up a rival church. This course explores how an obscure monk from a remote province of the Holy Roman Empire split the unity of the Christian world. After years of rebellions and religious wars the once unthinkable fragmentation of belief became accepted fact in 1648 with the Treaty of Westphalia. The class will be led by retired SVSU history professor, Bob Braddock.

Alexander Hamilton (270) Alexander Hamilton was one of the most significant Founders, arguably second only to George Washington as most influential in getting this country established on a solid, positive foundation. He served as the first secretary of the treasury, and was considered by some to have been, in effect, prime minister in Washington. Yet, he had enemies who regarded him as a dangerous man with Napoleonic ambitions and a self-centered threat to justice and freedom. This course will cover the early years and Revolutionary War experience; the establishment of the new country; the Washington Administration and the founding of the party system; and the last years and legacy. The class will be led by Northwood University history professor, John Pafford.

the Bay City area. We’ll discuss Bay City’s lumber rush, Bay City’s shipbuilding industry which played a significant role in military and scientific discovery, and the city’s industrial “heart” which contributed to some of the greatest architectural structures to the world. Brother Can You Spare a Dime?: How the Great Depression Changed America (271) “A chicken in every pot and a car in every garage” boasted campaign propaganda for Republican Presidential nominee Herbert Hoover in 1928, yet just a year later the U.S. would be plunged into its deepest economic recession ever, altering American society, economics, and politics. The U.S. had stood blissfully by throughout the 1920s before experiencing its own economic catastrophe as part of the global crises of post-war recession, wracking the basis for capitalism and causing a complete reformulation of American government and politics. In this course, focusing on the 1920s and 1930s, we will analyze the foundation, culmination, and resolution of the Great Depression Era and how it changed our country forever. Topics will include Isolationism, Republican laissezfaire government, the New Deal, the World War II neutrality policy, as well as the social impact of Depression Era life and its ramifications on American capitalism. The class will be led by SVSU adjunct history professor Katherine Ellison. Mondays: March 13, 20, 27 & April 3 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C129

Bay City’s Saginaw River (272) In 2016, Business Facilities’ 12th Annual Ranking of the Nation’s Logistics Leaders named Bay County in its top-ten list. We will explore photographs, artifacts, and documents that economically, socially, and culturally enrich Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Current Events & World Culture The Role of Religion in Middle East Politics (277) It is commonly assumed that both religion and politics are inextricably married and drive nation-state and asymmetric behavior in the Middle East. To what degree is this quantitatively accurate? How do various factions of religion influence Middle East conflict and politics? How has Western colonial involvement in the Middle East complicated the patchwork quilt of religion and governance in a highly complicated and volatile region of the world we must now address? The class will be led by attorney Jim Johnson, a political science professor at Ithaca College in New York. There will be a onehour break for lunch.

The Two Americas (279) In the summer of 2013 we offered a class which explored the issue of income inequality as it exists in the United States. Since that time, we have witnessed the fabric of American society delaminating and two completely different Americas emerging. Citizens living within miles of one another experience two different worlds and the distance between these worlds is increasing exponentially. In this course we will examine the nature of the Two Americas...the what, how, who and why America is developing fault-lines along the richness of diversity which was once our strength. The class will be led by attorney Jim Johnson, a political science professor at Ithaca College in New York. There will be a one-hour break for lunch.

A 15-20 minute video from TED.com will present one speaker’s view of the issue. Each talk will be followed by class discussion of that topic. TED talks don’t just present a summary of events and their causes, they tend to focus on innovative ideas and broad issues. The last 15-30 minutes of each class will be reserved for open discussion of any current issues that the class members wish to discuss. Exact topics and talks haven’t yet been chosen, but past topics have included income inequality, law enforcement issues, problems with the political system in the US, and assorted global issues. The class will be moderated by OLLI member Carol Gohm.
