For students at Saginaw Valley State University, scholarship support can make the difference between deferring a dream and completing a degree. Thanks to private scholarship support from alumni and friends, SVSU was able to award more than 1,400 scholarships during the 2020-2021 academic year. WHY ARE SCHOLARSHIPS IMPORTANT? • Even though SVSU has the most affordable tuition of all of Michigan’s public universities, the cost of a college education continues to rise. • Scholarships help provide access to higher education for students of all income levels. • Students who receive financial aid and work to help finance their education are still often left with gaps between their resources and their college expenses. • Scholarships may allow students “working their way through college” to work a manageable number of hours and still devote the necessary attention to their education. • Scholarships help students reduce the debt they will face after graduation. • Scholarships recognize and reward excellence and encourage continued achievement.

WHY ESTABLISH A SCHOLARSHIP? • You will contribute to the future success of our region by helping students complete their education and build a strong talent pipeline. • Named scholarships may recognize your achievements or honor a loved one’s achievements or special occasions. • You may memorialize a family member, friend or colleague by establishing a scholarship in their name.

HOW DO I ESTABLISH A SCHOLARSHIP? • Choose the option that’s right for you: • Annual Scholarships: Your gift each year determines the number and amount of scholarship awards made available. Or, you may make a single gift to fund scholarships annually until the original amount is depleted. • Endowed Scholarships: Your investment of $25,000 or more (in a single gift or through a multi-year pledge) establishes a named scholarship of $1,000 or more per year in perpetuity. • Contact the SVSU Foundation at (989) 964-4052 or foundation@svsu.edu so we can answer your questions and help you design a scholarship program that meets your philanthropic goals and reflects your vision. • Once your scholarship is ready to award, students will apply online, where your scholarship is listed year-round on our scholarship site, visible to prospective students, parents and other visitors.

GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND Gifts at any level are gratefully accepted and applied toward a fund that provides needand merit-based scholarship opportunities for SVSU students! 2

ENGINEERING A SUCCESSFUL FUTURE AT SVSU DON C. LAW MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ALUMNI LEGACY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

MacKenzie Miller As an engineering student, Don C. Law worked to pay his way through college for his engineering degree and founded a company, the Standish-based Magline, Inc., that has served our region for over 70 years as a manufacturer of aluminum material handling equipment. He never forgot those college years and despite his own success, remained sympathetic to those who were in the same position he once was. Don Law likely would have admired MacKenzie Miller’s drive and determination to succeed. Diagnosed with dyslexia at 14, MacKenzie recalls her parents giving her some life-changing advice. “My parents told me I had two choices: I could either sit around content with failing and whine about being terrible at what I am doing, or I could turn around and use it to my advantage.” She chose the latter, capitalizing on her strengths in STEM subjects to earn 40 college credits while still in high school and to pursue a dual major in mechanical engineering and management at SVSU. “Don was a big believer in personal accountability and wanted 8

to help those who were committed to accomplishing their goals,” says Greg Ecker, president and COO of Magline. “The Don C. Law Memorial Scholarship was created as an appropriate way to memorialize Don and to support those who were committed to helping themselves achieve success in the engineering field.” MacKenzie’s path to SVSU wasn’t clear-cut early on, even with the encouragement of her mother, Angie, a 2014 graduate of SVSU’s Master of Science in Nursing program and past recipient of the Patricia A. Hansel Memorial Scholarship. MacKenzie’s status as a “legacy” student also led to her receiving the Alumni Legacy Endowed Scholarship. “My mom wanted me to come (to SVSU) so badly. Being a stubborn teenager, I wanted to do the exact opposite of what she suggested. My original plan for college had a wrinkle in it and I had to pick a new school in two weeks. I had another buddy in a very similar situation to me, and we decided we were coming to SVSU. I do not know why I fought my mom so much, because I honestly love Saginaw Valley. The campus feels like home to me. I like that the engineering department is not super huge, so I get to know my classmates and professors. There are also quite a few great study spots on campus, which to me is huge.”

MacKenzie, a graduate of Coleman High School, began working as a high school co-op for Corteva Agriscience and continued as a college co-op, working part-time during the academic year and full-time in the summer. Looking to the future, she would like to pursue a career in the chemical industry and to advance into management. Engineering has proven to be a good fit for her skills and the way her mind works. “My brain is constantly working; it never shuts off. I will think about something until I can make sense of it. With engineering, you have to think outside of what is normal. You want those off-the-wall ideas, the random questions and thoughts, anything that mentally sets you apart from the guy next to you. I have always fit this bill. I found my advantage, and I plan to use it.” Greg Ecker and the team at Magline recognize the value in MacKenzie’s kind of thinking. Company leadership including Greg and members of the Law family are actively involved in the scholarship program and enjoy meeting with the students and their families. The company also offers internship and full-time career opportunities that contribute to the success of both aspiring engineers and the company. “Business growth driven through engineering and innovation remains a core foundation of Magline’s business,” Greg says. Taking personal accountability to set and obtain career goals while always striving to exceed your personal best was a guiding principle of Don Law’s life and remains at the heart of the scholarship criteria. “The scholarships are only awarded to students who are committed to and excel in SVSU’s engineering program. It is rewarding to help students who take responsibility and are focused on successfully obtaining their goals through personal drive, passion and enthusiasm.” MacKenzie is grateful to be the beneficiary of private scholarship support. “I want to genuinely thank them [donors] for taking such a weight off my shoulders. I know how many hours it would have taken to earn that amount on my own. That kind of generosity motivates me through school so that hopefully one day I can also afford to give back to my community.”

Don Law Don Law is remembered by his family and colleagues as a man who believed success was about more than receiving a college degree and excelling in the engineering field. If Don could offer recipients of his scholarship some advice, Magline President and COO Greg Ecker and his team believe it would include encouraging a balanced and generous approach to life. “Success incorporates a wellbalanced life with family, friends, personal interests, and a commitment to always giving back to society. Don was interested in helping students achieve their dreams. His legacy would ultimately be fulfilled if those who benefit from his vision and generosity would do the same and pay it forward in their lives.”

CONTINUING A MOTHER’S LEGACY OF HELPING STUDENTS SUCCEED THE TENA S. BARUTH BASKETBALL SCHOLARSHIP

The Baruth Men Born July 7, 1942, in Tzum, Netherlands, Tena Boomsma immigrated with her parents and her five siblings to the United States in 1948 and settled near Hitchcock, South Dakota, on a family dairy farm. Upon graduation from college, Tena taught at Carthage High School in South Dakota, where she became the first female basketball coach in the school’s history. She married Roger Baruth on May 27, 1967 and paused her career to be a stay-at-home mom while her children were young. Roger gives his wife, who passed away in 2011, much credit for that, as he had his hands full running the family farm. “She raised five boys and every one turned out to be a good person.” In addition to her priority on bringing the family together for daily meals, they all shared a common passion: basketball. “Basketball was our thing away from the farm,” Roger said. Tena applied her coaching skills to helping their sons excel, and Roger says it all started when one of them came home discouraged with his results in a hoop shoot.

Tena Baruth

“They would be out on the court shooting free throws when the games were over and everyone else was going home. It was not unusual for them to shoot up to 200 free throws in one night.” She was soon traveling with her sons all the way to competitions in Colorado and Montana. Roger recalls that one of their sons barely missed nationals, but for the ball rolling around the hoop.

Tena resumed her career, earning her master’s degree in school counseling from South Dakota State University in 1994 and serving in the Huron School system for 13 years as an elementary and middle school guidance counselor. Tena had a positive impact on thousands of children during her career and instilled a commitment to education and a hard work ethic into her own children. All five of the Baruth sons have college degrees. Her youngest son, Randy, serves as SVSU’s head basketball coach. Randy spotted a need among student-athletes in the basketball program for financial assistance for spring/summer tuition or to carry them through to getting their degrees once they completed their athletic scholarship eligibility. He talked with his father about establishing a scholarship in Tena’s name, and Roger immediately agreed that was the right way to honor her memory. “My wife loved working with kids and she was a teacher. That’s what she loved.” When asked what advice he thought Tena might offer to scholarship recipients, he said, “Appreciate what you’re getting and work hard for it.” Darnell “D.J.” Hoskins, Jr., a recipient of the Tena S. Baruth Basketball Scholarship, appreciates it immensely. When asked what he’d like to say to his scholarship donors, he replied, “You are greatly appreciated; the thought of even giving out a scholarship of this magnitude is doing people in need a great service. As a recipient of a scholarship, I am extremely grateful that others are willing to assist me in paying for my college degree and helping change my life.”

season was in jeopardy of being cancelled, but thankfully we were able to have some resemblance of a season, although nothing about it was normal.” D.J. took from the pandemic experience an important life lesson about change and adaptability, something with which the young immigrant Tena could have likely identified as she adapted to a new life in a new country, and achieved success with her education, career, and family. “Honestly, the pandemic has taught me that adapting to the way the world has changed is very important to continue being successful and realizing just how big of a part it all is in our world’s history,” D.J. said. While D.J. has a solid backup plan to pursue a career in the corporate world with his SVSU degree, his dream is to continue his basketball career. “If I am fortunate enough to extend my basketball career after college and play professionally, that would be a dream come true.” Damon Bozeman, a Detroit native and 2016 graduate of SVSU’s basketball program and former scholarship recipient, is living the dream as he trains to begin his fourth year playing professional basketball in Australia. “I decided to attend SVSU because of the great coaching staff. I felt that the coaches had my best interest (at heart) and they were going to help me succeed on and off the floor. My favorite memory of all time is winning the GLIAC conference. Being able to win something like that is special. It was also special for all teammates because we all worked so hard to achieve that goal!”

D.J. plans to graduate in May 2022 with his degree in business administration. “This scholarship helped me significantly (to) pay for a summer class that I needed for my athletic eligibility and academic progress headed into my final year so I can stay on track to graduate. I am proud of making it this far, and the even better part is that I am going to finish what I set out to do when I stepped foot on campus, and that was to earn my degree and make my family proud.”

Damon also credits his time at SVSU, while earning his degree in health science, with preparing him for his international career experience. “Life after college was an easy transition because of SVSU. Attending SVSU showed me how to work and communicate with people from all different ethnicities. Also, while living in Australia I was able to meet many different people from all over the world. Because of SVSU, I had no problem transitioning from America to Australia.”

D.J. seems like a perfect fit for a scholarship inspired by family ties. When asked why he chose SVSU, he replied, “The family atmosphere attracted me to SVSU. Academically, socially, and athletically, the university has allowed me to grow and become a better individual.”

Scholarship donors hold a special place in his heart as people who make more than just a huge financial impact on students. “If I could talk to SVSU scholarship donors I would say, please continue to support our program because we appreciate all of the love and support!”

The 2020-2021 academic year was challenging and required personal growth for a lot of students, and student-athletes had a more unusual year than most. “Athletically, our entire

That sentiment sums up the focus of Tena Baruth’s life and career: loving, supporting and inspiring young people to succeed.

ON AN UPWARD TRAJECTORY AT SVSU

AMERICAN LEGION POST 22 LEGION RIDERS SCHOLARSHIP SCOTT AND NANCY CARMONA ENDOWED BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP

Gabriel Villarreal, III Gabriel Villarreal, III has been on an upward trajectory, from his graduation from Freeland High School until his present status as a senior at SVSU, on target to graduate in May 2022. When asked what achievement in college made him the proudest, Gabe explained, “My GPA is the highest at SVSU than ever before. I have come so far since high school. I left Freeland High School with a 2.545 GPA. I graduated Delta College with somewhere around a 3.2-3.3. Now, I have a 3.6. I also am in an international economics honor society, Omicron Delta Epsilon, and was recently inducted as a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, a political science honor society.” This most recent honor required Gabe to be in the top 1/3 of his class. Gabe’s achievements at SVSU have been recognized with the American Legion Post 22 Legion Riders Scholarship and the Scott and Nancy Carmona Endowed Business Scholarship. An economics and political science major, Gabe’s future plans include law school with a focus on medical malpractice, and possibly service in the U.S. Army. With his bachelor’s degree from SVSU, he would be eligible to serve as an officer, continuing a long-standing family tradition of military service. His mother served in the U.S. Air Force, 24

his father in the Army, his maternal grandfather in the Army Air Corps and his paternal great-grandfather fought in Papua, New Guinea, during World War II. His interest in the law also stemmed from his connection to family, having seen his grandparents cope with nursing home issues that inspired his choice of medical malpractice as a focus for his legal studies. The American Legion Post 22 in Saginaw was established in 1919. The post serves a variety of needs for the community and veterans including Honor Guard for funerals, participation in flag lines with the Michigan Patriot Guard, and supplying equipment such as canes, walkers, and crutches for veterans and their families. The Legion provides youth programs and is involved in many other service activities throughout the year. The SVSU scholarship is funded with money raised by the Legion Riders and the Sons of the American Legion to assist veterans and their families. Scott (B.S., 1981) and Nancy Carmona established endowed scholarship programs in both engineering and business, and have provided strong support to SVSU, Scott’s alma mater, for many years. Most recently, they made the leadership

gift to the expansion and enhancement of SVSU’s business school, recognized by the naming of the Scott L. Carmona College of Business in 2020. The Scott and Nancy Carmona Endowed Business Scholarship assists full-time College of Business majors in their second year or later who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership.

Though Gabe receives benefits through the Veterans Administration, works to help finance his education and has taken out loans, that still doesn’t cover the full cost of his college education. He credits scholarship support with making the essential difference. “It has helped tremendously. There is no way I could have afforded college without it.”

Gabe’s decision to attend SVSU was based on the smooth transfer process from Delta and Gabe’s choice to remain close to home, where he puts a priority on family time with his girlfriend and their son. They are looking forward to welcoming a new daughter in the near future, and Gabe plans to spend some time after graduation focusing on his role as a father before starting the next phase of his educational and career journey.

Gabe expressed his gratitude for scholarship support and his hope to make a similar impact on future generations. “Thank you so much. This money is the only thing that kept me in school. Without you (donors) I wouldn’t be where I am today. Regardless of how hard someone works, financial struggles can really take the wind out of your sails. Someday, hopefully, I am able to pay it forward and grant scholarships myself.”
