Guests are welcome to attend one OLLI monthly meeting without a charge. This gives a non-member a chance to check our program out. If an individual comes more than once they would need to join OLLI, or pay a $10 fee per meeting. Upcoming spring/summer programs are listed on page 5.

Message from the Director, According to Leo Tolstoy, “spring is the time of plans and projects.” As I look out over the courtyard amongst the drizzle and not yet budded trees, I can’t help but reflect on Tolstoy’s comments. Here in the OLLI office, we’ve been working hard to put together an exciting list of classes, trips, and meetings with some old favorites and some new options.

■ Interest Groups

A chance to get together on a regular basis with others who share your passion for a sport, social activity or interest. See page 4 for a list of our active groups.

Established in 2001, we have grown to over 2000 members from throughout the Great Lakes Bay region and are constantly seeking to keep our members happy. This semester, check out the OLLI After Hours events and new class selections in Legal Studies. As always, please let us know what classes and trips you’d like to see in future catalogs too!

SVSU-OLLI Interest Groups Over the years, we have learned that people join OLLI for two major reasons. The first is the opportunity to learn new things and travel; but a secondary, and sometimes more important reason, is the opportunity to meet new friends who have similar interests. Our Interest Groups bring together members who have similar interests or hope to meet others socially. From time to time we hear that our members would like to start a new Interest Group. The Current Interest Groups: first step of the process is to find a group leader. Qigong and Taiji For Everyone Tuesday, May 9, 2017 After last year’s successful class featuring the Ten Movement Taijiquan, Ming-Dao will return to teach the Twenty-Four Movement Yang Style Taijiquan. An expansion of the ten basic postures, this set is excellent for beginning and intermediate students. This is an exceptional method for relaxation, the healing of chronic illnesses, and the maintenance of balanced health. Come join the Taiji community and discover the wonders of Taijiquan. This workshop will work on teaching Taijiquan 24, and a Qigong set called “The Eight Pieces of Brocade.” The Eight Pieces of Brocade is one of the classic qigong (breath training) sets. It builds and circulates energy and brings calm. Taijiquan (T’ai Chi Ch’uan), an exercise that consists of slow, relaxed, and graceful movements, has been credited with improving health, promoting circulation and joint mobility, and enhancing longevity. Deng Ming-Dao is an author, marital artist, and Taoist. He is known nationally and internationally for nine books, including The Chronicles of Tao, a biography of his Taoist master; 365 Tao, a book of daily meditations; and Scholar Warrior, a book showing how exercises, meditations, and philosophy combine into a single spiritual path. His books have been translated into sixteen languages.

History of the Doll Named Barbie (327)

Doll collecting is one of the most well-loved crafts and hobbies in the world. It is a pastime enjoyed by both men and women, young and old. The type of doll collected varies from the costly antique to the newest doll on the toy shelf. In 1945, Ruth & Elliot Handler and a friend, Harold Matson, founded the Mattel Creations--MATT for Matson and EL for Elliot. This company began as a miniature photo frame business and became one of the most well-known and largest toy companies in history. The Handlers brought a new doll, BARBIE, to the toy shelf in 1959, and, as they say, the rest is history! Who is this doll named Barbie/Barbara Millicent Roberts? How did she get started, and where is she now? Barbie, her family, and friends have made Mattel, Inc., over a billion dollars since 1959. We will review Barbie’s beginnings, see how she became an icon, learn about her markings, and discuss her unique wardrobe and accessories. The last class session will be held at the instructor’s home (OLLI member Louise Hendricks), where we will indulge in a light snack and view her personal collection of more than 500 dolls. Many major decisions are made based on numbers, but can we trust them? What do they mean, and do they really apply to us? In this class we will explore what some of these numbers mean and how they are arrived at. We will investigate the measures of middle, such as the average and the median, and then look at how we measure numbers that are further from the middle. Percentages, when used to report on information (polling results), are subject to error and not as precise as they appear. We will look at research studies used to influence our behaviors. The results of these studies tend to be hyped in the news, but they may not apply to us and could possibly skew our decision-making. Major studies can also disagree (is butter good or bad?), so we will look at some of the reasons why. Class is taught by OLLI member Chris Eckerle. World Political Update (334) The world has changed much since our last iteration of this long-running course. A new president and his administration are creating “change” in diplomatic, political, and military environments around the globe. We appear to be closer to our foes than traditional allies. We will review the unusual relationship between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. What does this mean for the Ukraine? For our European allies? For the Balkans? What impacts will the “Trump Doctrine” have on the US/Asian military pivot? North Korea? Japan and South Korea? What of the Chinese response to the administration’s plans to ignore the “One China Plan”? While his unpolished brash approach appeals to the domestic Trump base, what is the potential blowback for the United States internationally? This class is taught by Jim Johnson. The Impact of Global Climate Change on the World’s Poor: The Moral and Ethical Considerations of Inaction (335)

While the vast responsible majority of the scientific community acknowledges the reality of global climate change, the nations of the world struggle to work through the political ramifications of the Kyoto Protocol Extensions and the Paris Agreement. One thing remains largely clear-- global climate change will significantly impact the world’s poorest citizens far more disproportionately than it will those with means and the nationstates who represent their interests. What does the impact appear to be on the poor? Who represents their interests? How do we reconcile the parochial discussion of doing what is best for “us” while ignoring the reality that our behavior will severely impact the most vulnerable among us? With the 2016 presidential election, we have all witnessed power gambits that may change the country drastically. We often think of power as the property of politicians and the wealthy. As a result, it may come as a surprise to understand how each of us uses and is affected by power in our everyday lives. In this simulation, led by OLLI member Norm Sterchele, students will participate and explore relationships and discuss the emotions and results of our interactions with authority. women like Hatshepsut, pharaoh of Egypt; Aspasia, wife of the Greek general Pericles; Livia, wife of Augustus, the first Roman Emperor; and Agrippina, sister of Caligula and mother of Nero. We’ll also see what life was like for the average woman in these societies: the unnamed daughters, wives, and mothers who helped to keep the great cities and societies going on a day-to-day level. From the highest of the upper classes to the most common of the commoners, we’ll see how things have changed (and what hasn’t) and how the lives of women who lived thousands of years ago still have an effect on our modern culture. Mysterious burial mounds of the Hopewell Indians and lingering legends will be explored. In the second class, students will hear how as Northern Michigan developed, thriving lumber towns became ghost towns, and some morphed into high-toned vacation spots. We will study how famed novelist Ernest Hemingway explored the Petoskey area and based his Nick Adams stories on his interaction with the Indians. Brady Hill and Forest Lawn Cemeteries (356)

Exploring Two Cemeteries: Brady Hill and Forest Lawn with Tom Trombley, Vice President and Chief Historian with the Historical Society of Saginaw County. The story of Saginaw is chronicled in its cemeteries, and this tour will afford participants an opportunity to explore the interconnected histories of Brady Hill and Forest Lawn Cemeteries. Both were developed by the city of East Saginaw. The first recorded burial at Brady Hill was in 1855, and Forest Lawn opened in 1881. Together, they afford a unique opportunity to explore the history of the community, changing attitudes toward cemeteries, and the evolution of nineteenth century landscape architecture. While their monuments and mausoleums commemorate the people who made Saginaw the Lumber Capital of the World and transformed it into an industrial city, their park-like grounds include work by noted landscape designers. As we explore these historic places, we will study markers from the 1850s, monuments from famed Tiffany Studios, and discuss the histories of Forest Lawn’s 1901 chapel and a building that was originally a station for the Interurban. This class includes about 1.5 miles of walking over uneven terrain. Thursday: 8/3, 8/10 • 10 am - 12 pm Location: Off-Site, first class at Brady Hill Cemetery Price: $18 members; $36 non-members
