Pope Francis: Who is He Really?
Judith Thompson, SVSU Adjunct Professor of Sociology
Last March Jorge Mario Bergoglio became the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church and chose the name Francis. Since then, he has captured the public imagination worldwide in a way that few religious figures have. Both Catholics and non-Catholics have responded to his decisions and actions with surprise and wondered how he became Pope. In fact, Pope Francis is a moderate who does not stray from traditional Catholic teachings, but his simpler and less formal approach to the papacy resonates with diverse people around the world. At this monthly meeting, SVSU Sociology Professor Judith Thompson will take a closer look at the leader of the Catholic faith. She currently teaches anthropology and global cultures for SVSU and holds master’s degrees in Education and Social Foundations and Cross Cultural Theology from a Catholic seminary.

Through inspirational stories from active seniors, supported by the latest research in the fields of psychology and neuro-science, Peter shows how to build an enriching lifestyle on the foundation of favorite activities. He is Senior Vice President at Boston-based Road Scholar where he is responsible for strategic planning, marketing and communications, and research. Prior to joining Road Scholar, he worked for 17 years at Rodale, Inc. as publisher, group publisher, and vice president for strategic planning.

Ancient Peking is the backdrop for the myth of the beautiful and bloodthirsty Princess Turandot. Resolved to never let any man possess her, she decrees that any suitor must answer three riddles or die. Many believe that Puccini’s final opera is also his most musically adventurous. Our package includes seats to the 11 a.m. dress rehearsal, a threecourse late lunch at Sinbad’s after the show, and motorcoach transportation from SVSU. It also includes a pre-trip opera overview led by Greg Largent, Director Music Ministries at First Presbyterian Church in Saginaw. Pre-Trip Lecture: Thursday, May 1 3-4:30 p.m. in Curtiss 129. West Side Story at the Fisher Theatre (29)
More than fifty years ago one musical changed theater forever. Now it’s back and mesmerizing audiences once again. From the first note to the final breath, West Side Story soars as the greatest love story of all time. This revival, based on Tony Award-winning librettist Arthur Laurents’ Broadway direction, remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The Bernstein and Sondheim score is considered to be one of Broadway’s finest and features such classics of the American musical theatre as “Tonight,” “America,” “I Feel Pretty” and “Somewhere.” As the Associated Press says, West Side Story remains Broadways best dance-driven musical. Our package includes main floor tickets to the 2 p.m. matinee, a family-style lunch beforehand at Fishbones, and motorcoach transportation from SVSU. Saturday: May 17 from 9:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. Price: $119 Members; $139 Non-Members

Book of Mormon at the Wharton Center in East Lansing (32)
With nine 2011 Tony Awards, most would agree that the Book of Mormon was the best musical that year. In fact, The New York Times called it the best musical of the century. From the witty creators of TV’s South Park and the Tony-winning composer of Avenue Q comes the Book of Mormon, a musical parody that follows the hilarious adventures of two dim-witted Mormon boys out on a mission in a far-flung community in Uganda where beliefs, customs, and traditions are worlds apart from what they know. Expect raucous laughter and entertainingly good show music. Please note that the show contains very explicit language. Our package includes main floor tickets to the 2 p.m. matinee, a three-course lunch before the show at the MSU Kellogg Conference Center, and motorcoach transportation. Date: Saturday, June 14 from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Price: $139 Members; $159 Non-Members

WWII: Part II (353)
This class begins in 1942 where our WWII: Part I class left off in February, and continues through the end of the war. The advance of the Axis powers was halted and the long battle to reverse their gains began. Victory over Axis tyranny brought great rejoicing which, however, soon gave way to the harsh reality that the world had not moved to sunlit uplands where order, justice and freedom prevailed. Now the menace of Soviet and Chinese imperialism had to be confronted. This class will be led by Northwood University history professor John Pafford.

A Century of Progress: The 1933 World’s Fair (356)
1933 might easily have been one of the darkest years in the history of mankind. Hitler came to power and the Depression was at its deepest point. Still, hope loomed for a brighter future. Forty million people found the money and the time to visit “A Century of Progress” on the waterfront just south of Navy Pier in Chicago. There, science aided by industry and government predicted a better tomorrow. Our tomorrow was modeled for all to see. Cars would drive themselves, homes would be transformed, pictures would come through the airwaves into every home, and trains would get you from Denver to Chicago in one day. This will be a riveting class with media to add to the excitement. The class, led by OLLI member Fred Welsh, will be a follow-up to his previous class on the Columbian Exposition.
Income Inequality: What if Nothing is Done? (358)
Thursdays: August 7, 14, 21 & 28 • 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C129
This course will examine three distinct aspects of a topic which has risen to higher levels in the common discourse: income inequality. The first session will define income inequality and examine the degree to which it exists in the United States. What are the causes? Why is it a problem? Session two will examine the historical legacy of societies which have experienced income inequality and done nothing about it (spoiler alert: it is not a pretty outcome). Session three will explore possible manners in which the United States could address income inequality. What solutions exist? The class will be led by Jim Johnson, an adjunct political science professor and attorney.
Current Events War Crimes (357)
As Americans we are raised to believe that war crimes are terrible offenses committed by “lesser nations” and rogue dictators. As Americans it is OUR responsibility to use our military might to rid the world of those who commit war crimes. We are ethical and we adhere to the “rule of the law.” But what if that was only partially true? This course will explore American war crimes. We will review multiple conflicts throughout our history and examine where and when America has committed the very same atrocities we believe others are only capable of. The class will be led by Jim Johnson, an adjunct political science professor and attorney.
