STUDY ABROAD MYTHS
Study abroad participants must speak another language.
Studying abroad is not relevant to my future career.
Students are NOT required to speak a second language to study abroad. Most programs offer English-taught courses even in non-English speaking countries.
Employers are increasingly realizing the value of candidates with the maturity, flexibility, and inter-cultural competence developed during studying abroad. In our global economy, international experience will help students be competitive in the job market.
Study abroad is not affordable.
Sam Hudson
Many programs are similar in cost to a semester at SVSU. Some programs are more affordable while others are considerably more expensive. Financial aid, scholarships, loans, and grants can help cover the cost of study abroad programs.
Senior, BA – English Education Costa Rica, Summer 2014: USAC
Studying abroad will delay my graduation.
“My study abroad trip really gave me a new perspective on the world. Regardless of where you decide to go, your trip will teach you something incredible that you had probably never thought of before your journey.”
Careful program and course selection allow a student to stay on track with degree progress. Students should talk to their study abroad advisor and an academic advisor about making an academic plan.
5
Study abroad is not for non-traditional students. OIAS is committed to helping students find a program that accommodates time constraints and family/professional obligations. Many non-traditional students choose to participate in faculty-led programs, which range from two to three weeks in duration.
WORDS OF WISDOM
Saginaw Valley State University • 2015 - 2016
Nina Dulek
Sophomore, BBA – International Business Italy, Fall 2014: Athena Study Abroad “I feel that going out of my comfort zone has prepared me for the world. It has opened my eyes and many doors to my future. My advice– Don’t ever miss an opportunity. If you have it, if you can make it happen, do it.”
DnZell Teague
Alumna, BA – Theatre Ghana, Winter Break 2012: Faculty-led Program Taiwan, Spring 2013: Ming Chuan University Europe, Spring 2015: Faculty-led Program “Take thoughtful risks and a leap of faith. Prior to the trip, get to know the people who are going on the same trip if possible. When I think of my last study abroad, the first things that come to mind are so many new friendships. “
CHOOSING A PROGRAM There are a number of program features to consider when browsing through program options. Although students are responsible for choosing their study abroad program, staff and peer advisors are available to offer guidance. Visit SVSU Study Abroad for an advising session. Appointments recommended.
To help narrow things down, consider what the program package offers, based on: • Program Type • Destination • Language of Instruction • Housing Options • Excursions • Academic Fit • Service-Learning Opportunities • Internship Opportunities
WORDS OF WISDOM Lizzi Radosa
Charlotte Norfleet
“Even if you do have to take out a small loan like me, it is totally worth it. I have had so many people tell me the only thing they regret from college is not studying abroad. Don’t let that be you!“
“The trip not only changed the way I perceive the world around me, but it gave me a remarkable desire to improve what I see. This experience has taught me the meaning of ‘if you don’t like it, change it’ in the most meaningful way imaginable.”

ACADEMICS ABROAD OIAS encourages and recommends that students talk to their academic advisor and study abroad advisor about how study abroad fits into their academic plan. Students should not limit themselves to English-speaking destinations! Most programs offer courses taught in English even in countries where English is not the primary language.
SVSU Faculty-Led Programs
What requirements can I fulfill abroad?
SVSU Partnerships/ Non-SVSU Programs
Students participating in a faculty-led program will register for SVSU courses. Students will earn a grade and courses will appear on their SVSU transcript immediately upon completion of the program.
While abroad, students are able to take courses that will fulfill: • Major requirements • Minor requirements • General Education requirements • University requirements • Electives
Students participating in a partnership or non-SVSU program will either register for courses that have been approved or will go through a course approval process. This process involves having courses evaluated and approved by the appropriate departments.

FUNDING STUDY ABROAD
How do I fund my program? Students typically fund study abroad through a combination of financial aid, scholarships, grants, loans, and personal funds. Study abroad costs vary depending on the program a student selects. While some programs are more expensive, the majority of programs are similar to what you would spend at SVSU and some may even be less. With research and early planning, study abroad can be affordable. For detailed information about program costs, visit svsu.edu/studyabroad. Students can use their SVSU financial aid award toward the cost of a study abroad program. Please contact your study abroad advisor or financial aid for more information.

Student teaching abroad offers SVSU student teachers the option of adding a cross-cultural learning and teaching experience to their resumé. Student teachers typically spend the first eight weeks of teaching in Michigan and the second eight weeks at an English-medium school abroad.
STUDENT TEACHING ABROAD
You can choose placement in the following countries:
37
INDIA
Student Teaching Placement In English-speaking countries, you can expect to teach classes in your licensing areas (elementary education, secondary mathematics, visual arts, and so on). In non-English speaking countries, your focus will be working with your school’s foreign language teachers to provide instruction in conversational and written English. If you happen to be fluent in your host country’s native language, you may have the opportunity to teach classes in your licensing area. Most participating schools, however, value the program because they want to expose students to native English speakers.
