I AM A PROFESSOR AND A POLITICAL SCIENTIST WHO IS PASSIONATE ABOUT THE DETROIT TIGERS.
I AM A TOUGH TEACHER WHO PUSHES MY STUDENTS—TO WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN.
“I am confident when I say that I think SVSU’s political science department is the best in the state in teaching undergraduates about politics. At any given time, there are a dozen or more learning and engagement opportunities for our political science students: writing in our political science journal, attending a research conference, participating in a Lansing or Washington, D.C. internship, mentoring high school students, studying abroad, being a part of the Law Club or nationally recognized Moot Court and Model U.N. teams, or joining a peer academic club like Pi Sigma Alpha.
“I am a challenge-seeker and so when I was completing my Ph.D. at the University of Kentucky, I looked at the three job offers I had (the FDA, a research center, and SVSU) and decided hands-down on SVSU. Getting to interact with students at a teaching university like SVSU pushes you, and that’s what I wanted.
I am somebody who likes hard-working team players who give it their all—like SVSU students and my beloved Detroit Tigers.”
I am a runner. Like teaching, it motivates me to keep going and make myself better for the experience.”
I am a believer in finding incentives to help students who want to learn—that’s called ‘game theory economics.’ I want my students to apply what they learn in a meaningful way. Memorizing isn’t going to work in my classroom.

I AM A TEACHER, A COACH AND A ROCK CLIMBER.
I AM A RESEARCHER, TEACHER, MENTOR AND MOM.
I AM A GROWER OF MINDS AND GARDENS.
“I am a person who looks at life as an adventure. My classes are part of that journey, but my students don’t travel alone; we’re on the trip together. That can only happen at a school like SVSU because we know our students.
“I am proud of the chemistry department and the fact that we have such unique and talented faculty who care about what their students accomplish. They not only help prepare students for the next class, but for the next phase of their lives, whether it’s a career or on to grad school.
“I am passionate about working with education students so they may be able to effectively teach all students, regardless of ethnicity or socio-economic status. Certainly, it’s important to prepare our future teachers for content delivery, but in the global world we live in, it’s also imperative that we explore classroom management and diversity issues.
I am a hard, but fair teacher who holds my students to a higher expectation. I won’t have my students do something I wouldn’t do, so I am as serious about living a healthy lifestyle as I am about teaching it. I work out and rock and ice climb. I love the discipline, mental reward and rush that you get from climbing— and teaching.”
I am pleased that so many of our chemistry students get to be engaged in active research projects. Many also do industry-specific co-ops. Add to that the mentoring from our faculty and our chemistry students have a great experience. (And as their teachers, so do we). I am most proud of my role as a mom, and a close second is my role as a teacher.”

NEW! Fast Way M.B.A. is an advanced program for entering freshmen who can earn a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) in three years and a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) in one additional year. Eligible students must have a high school GPA of 3.5 or higher and a composite ACT score of 26 or higher.
ACCREDITATION The College of Business & Management is accredited by the AACSB-International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). Less than 5 percent of business colleges worldwide are so recognized. AACSB accreditation is a hallmark of excellence in management education. It means the delivery of a superior degree program, learning through relevant and rigorous curricula, and starting salaries that are higher than what graduates from non-AACSB accredited schools might earn.
Cate Yankley — Even though she has just one year under her belt, Cate has had an amazing college experience. She was in the first class of the Cardinal Business Edge, beginning in fall 2012. She’s looking forward to the CBE’s faculty-led international study abroad experience, but before that, she is planning a six-week foreign language immersion experience at the Sorbonne in Paris (she’ll earn six credit hours). Cate’s enjoyed living on campus and has taken some of the negotiation and teamwork skills she’s learned from CBE and applied them to her suite-mate relationships. “Making compromises, negotiating, being respectful—it’s all important.”

There are several academic support centers here to help you say, “I am a successful student.” These tutoring, support and lab services are paid for through your tuition, so there are no additional usage or tutoring fees.
The SVSU Writing Center

No matter what major you’ve chosen, communication skills are critical. The Writing Center helps students involved in every discipline. From freshman papers to graduate school applications, staff and student mentors are here to help.
A commitment SVSU makes to those incoming freshmen who want to complete a bachelor’s degree in four years. Beginning at freshman orientation (SOAR), students work closely with academic advising on course and credit hour selection to ensure completion of a degree in four years.

Zach Myers Zach Myers has never settled for “average” or “ordinary.” And so it should be no surprise that the NCAA Division II “National Player of the Year” (soccer) and All American completed his degree at SVSU in four years. Zach’s successes—on and off the field— have taught him valuable educational and life lessons. And though he completed his degree in four years, Zach feels that his college experience was whole, complete. “I never wanted to be the athlete who performs on the field and is never part of the campus life.” And so Zach—a Dean’s Scholarship recipient, peer advisor, “Forever Red” member (a “pre-alumni” student organization to engage students with alumni while building RED PRIDE tradition) and member of the Student Advisory Board for the College of Business & Management—made the very most of his four years. After graduating in May 2013, Zach is looking at graduate schools, with intentions of pursuing a master’s degree in sports administration and someday be a collegiate athletic director. That dream job is a bit more specific … to be SVSU’s athletic director.

Amanda Peterson Currently: Nursing major, expected to graduate May 2014. In spring 2013, Amanda participated in a faculty-led study abroad trip to Nepal. The trip was led by nursing faculty, Dr. Elizabeth Roe (professor of nursing) and Marcia Shannon (assistant professor of nursing). Students toured Nepalese healthcare settings, hiked in the lowlands of the Himalayan Mountains, interacted with nursing students at two universities and visited many cultural heritage sites to learn more about the people of Nepal. Regarding the value of learning, seeing and being a part of the global healthcare scene, professor Shannon says of the trips she has led to China, Cambodia, Vietnam, India, Indonesia and Nepal, “the students all agree that it is a life-changing experience.” Amanda agrees, noting that being out of her comfort zone and seeing other cultures will help her be a more sensitive, respectful and flexible healthcare provider. “It’s about connecting at a human level, not just at a ‘patient’ level,” she adds. At SVSU: • A President’s Scholarship recipient • Secretary of Student Nurses Association (SNA) • Captain of SNA Relay for Life

Currently: Cardinal wide receiver. Exercise Science/Health Science major. Intends to graduate December 2013 and plans to pursue chiropractic school.
A quarterback and his receiver need to be in sync to make the important plays happen. Jon and Jeff are great teammates on the football field and share similar feelings about their SVSU academic experience. Both agree that: • Faculty and coaches always go out of their way to help out • Learning isn’t just tests and textbooks, but “real world” • SVSU’s size is perfect: it’s a large university experience, but with a small college feel • To do it over again, they would still choose SVSU

I would be choosing one or the other. Having that support from the professors and the coaches is awesome. “There was no question in my mind when I visited SVSU. It fit me: the campus, the music department, the size of the school, the one-on-one connections to faculty. And with the scholarship support I received, it removed a lot of pressure on my family.” At SVSU: • Recipient of Dean’s Scholarship, Rhea Miller Music Scholarship, track and field scholarship • As a member of the track and field team, throws discus, shot put, hammer weight
