SVSU-OLLI Interest Groups Over the years, we have learned that people join OLLI for two major reasons. The first is the opportunity to learn new things and travel; but a secondary, and sometimes more important reason, is the opportunity to meet new friends who have similar interests. Our Interest Groups bring together members who have similar interests or hope to meet others socially. From time to time we hear that our members would like to start a new Interest Group. The first step of the process is to find a group leader. This is the person who communicates with the group members, and works with the OLLI office to secure a meeting place and a regular meeting time. If you are interested in leading a group, or want to learn more about the process, contact Jo Brownlie at (989)964-4310 or email her at jap@svsu.edu.

Welcome & Announcements What the Affiliation between Covenant Cancer Care Center and the MD Anderson Cancer Network Means to the Great Lakes Bay Area
Presenter: Jackie Tinnin Director of Covenant Cancer Care Center
Covenant HealthCare is Michigan’s first and only certified member of the MD Anderson Cancer Network, a program of the MD Anderson Cancer Center. A world-renowned leader in cancer care, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has been ranked in the top two cancer centers in the nation since the U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” survey began 25 years ago. By becoming a certified member of this network, Covenant can now offer new hope to local cancer patients. Access to treatment guidelines and best practices, along with second opinions available by worldrenowned cancer specialists allow patients to receive their cancer care close to home. The MD Anderson Cancer Network builds on Covenant’s strong successful history of cancer patient care. Together their mission is to eliminate cancer, but until that time comes, together they will advance cancer care giving new hope to the region. Jackie Tinnin, a registered respiratory therapist, has worked in the health care industry for 22 years and has been with Covenant HealthCare since 2010. Her areas of expertise include cancer care, wound healing & hyperbaric medicine, and chronic disease management, including asthma and diabetes. Break 10:45 a.m. 11:00 a.m. STAR (Survivorship Training and Rehabilitation Program): Enhancing Survivorship by Getting Your Best Self Back
Presenter: Shannon Kleinert Coordinator of the STAR Program
A key component of comprehensive survivorship services at Covenant Cancer Care Center is multidisciplinary cancer rehabilitation care that can help survivors improve their ability to function and their quality of life. Regardless of the stage of cancer or phase of treatment or recovery, survivors can benefit from participation in an evidence-based rehabilitation program. Yet, many cancer survivors who need cancer rehabilitation are not referred for services. For example, a study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology evaluated 163 women with metastatic breast cancer. Of these participants, 92% had at least one physical impairment and a total of 530 impairments were identified. This study found that more than 90% of patients need cancer rehabilitation, but fewer than 30% receive it. This unmet need may be in part due to a lack of understanding about what cancer rehabilitation can offer survivors. Shannon Kleinert is a graduate of the University of Michigan-Flint physical therapy program. She currently works at Covenant as the lead physical therapist and coordinator of the STAR program. She has taken additional classes at Oakland University in the care of patients with a cancer diagnosis as well as becoming a STAR certified clinician. Noon Program Concludes

Wednesday, October 14, 2015 An Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation Presenter: Nan Spence, Mindfulness Meditation teacher Too often we tend to focus on regret and grief about past experiences, or in fear of the future. Mindfulness is a form of meditation which teaches us to live in the present moment with non-judgmental awareness and acceptance of what is. It helps us to flow more easily with the ups and downs of our lives. It uses the power of the mind to help us to be present to our current life experiences. This can help to free our minds from negativity and open our hearts to deeper wisdom, love, joy, peace and compassion. This form of meditation is becoming popular in the medical, psychological, and education fields. Our presenter is Nan Spence, who has both educational preparation and experience to share as a mindfulness teacher. She holds master’s degrees in counseling and theology with an emphasis on spirituality. In addition, she has studied mindfulness with respected teachers, including Jon Kabat-Zinn.

Hall served for 30 years in the military and then worked for General Motors for 10 years. In 1993, Hall left the corporate life to teach for Northwood University and later was Executive in Residence for the business school at SVSU. A Whole Lot of Shakin’ Goin’ On: Earthquakes 2015 (101)
Understanding Architecture (103)
On May 2, 2015, and again on June 30, 2015, earthquakes rattled Michigan. Earthquakes in Oklahoma and Texas have become an almost daily occurrence. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal in April 2015. This course will consider these questions: Do all earthquakes originate in the same way? Can we predict the locations, magnitudes, and timing of future earthquakes? Can hydraulic fracturing (fracking) in oil and gas wells cause earthquakes? Can the disposal of fluids in wells initiate earthquakes? The course will be led by Lee Smith, who has previously given OLLI courses on a variety of geological topics. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geology and is a Certified Petroleum Geologist.
This new class will explore the fundamental thinking that shapes the design and building of structures and buildings we use and live in. By focusing on some of the definitions and theories that have developed in various cultures and societies over time, we can move from a loose understanding to one that is more complete and helpful in forming the basis of our perceptions. This will allow us to have a more complete understanding of architecture today. The four sessions will cover understanding architecture, pure architecture, architectural style, and conclusions. Our instructor is Hugh Gershon, who holds a master’s degree in architecture from Columbia University. He has worked with many building types and has experience teaching design and a host of other architectural classes.

Oceans in Focus as Global Climate Alters (102)
The Earth’s surface is 71% covered by ocean and it is often described as the last great wilderness. Oceanography draws upon all of the natural sciences in an attempt to interpret the marine realm. In this class we will start by examining basic information about the oceans; then later we will explore how humankind in the 21st century is altering the seas. OLLI member Bob Enszer, retired chemistry and biology teacher, will introduce you to the basics of oceanography and then, the current thinking about how climate change and human activity are changing the marine environment. To help in this exploration, some material from Oceanography: Exploring Earth’s Final Wilderness, one of the Great Courses offerings, will be utilized. Geology, biology, physics, and chemistry will

Wildlife Grab Bag (104) This three-session class will provide information on the identity, behavior and natural history of a wide variety of (mostly Michigan) wildlife, from aquatic insects to birds, butterflies and mammals. Janea Little, of Little’s Touch of Nature, will begin with a look at both baby animals and animals we love to hate in session one. She will explore parental strategies employed by an assortment of wildlife species, and consider why we are so enamored by young critters while being terrified of others. Session two will focus on insects, including the life histories of aquatic insects well-known to fly-fisherman, as well as Michigan’s migrating butterfly species. The final session will feature birds – their physiological and behavioral adaptations to winter and, to give you hope for the return of spring, some “hot spot” birding locales in both Ohio and the Saginaw Bay Area. How to Track Your Activity with the FitBit
Tuesday, October 6
Tuesday, November 17
This presentation will take a walk through the beginning of the UAV technology and look into how the systems have been updated and used throughout the years. Today with drones being hyped in the media we will look at the commercial and military uses for UAVs along with rules and regulations. Other items that will be covered will include how a remote control model is different than a UAV, current and future uses of the technology inside U.S. airspace, and future uses for the technology from a commercial standpoint. Multiple UAVs will be on display during this session and there will be a demonstration of a Quad Rotor UAV. Our speaker is David Herald, a program manager with Merrill Aviation and Defense in Saginaw. He has 15 years of advanced composite experience and ten years aerodynamic experience in auto racing and UAS technology.
Have you heard people talking about their FitBit or have you seen one in a store and wondered how they work? A FitBit is a small, easy-to-use technological device worn on your wrist (or carried in your pocket) that tracks physical activity. Tracking physical activity has been shown to be effective for increasing and maintaining physical activity levels. This session will provide information about the FitBit, including how it works, what type of information it tracks, and how you can view and interpret the information. FitBit users will be on hand after the presentation to provide one-on-one assistance to attendees. This program will be led by Meghan Baruth, an assistant professor in the Department of Health Science at SVSU. to a hard bottom and rocks in place which we can call reality” (Walden, Chapter 2). Take a walk with us as we explore Walden, an American Classic. Basil Clark, Professor Emeritus of English, and James Hitt, Associate Professor of Philosophy, will be your guides. We’ll listen to Thoreau’s literary voice and peer behind his transcendentalism. Writing Your Life (157)
Sondheim Part I: Putting it Together (155)
We live and experience the world through our own eyes, heart, and mind. No two chapters are the same. Whether it’s one small episode, or a lifetime of memories, personal writing is a great way to recall, reflect, and share. This five-week class will concentrate on developing ideas and writing in ways to engage both writer and reader. Writing prompts will be used, which will make the process fun and stress-free. The class will be led by Ron Brown, a Delta and SVSU composition instructor.
Few in the theatre world would argue with Frank Rick of the New York Times who said that Stephen Sondheim is “now the greatest and perhaps best-known artist in the American musical theatre.” A protégée of Oscar Hammerstein II, this brilliant Broadway composer and lyricist has even surpassed his master by winning more Tony Awards than any other composer, including a special Tony for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre. Some of his most famous shows include West Side Story, Gypsy, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods. Keith Spaulding will be the usher for this investigation which will include productions from early in Sondheim’s career, through A Little Night Music (1973). The second part of Sondheim’s career will be covered in a future spring 2016 class.

Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey (161) Did Homer, the blind bard, really exist? Who wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey? Why was the story of Troy so important to the Greeks? Who were the heroes and where did they come from? These epics were so important they were studied in schools as early as 400 BC. They have remained an important part of the curriculum of Western education for almost 3,000 years! This brief foray into Homer and his contributions will be led by Barb Mitchell who is an OLLI member and a student of classical civilizations and literature. Tuesdays: October 13, 20, 27, November 3 & 10 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Price: $32 Members; $62 Non-Members Room: C129

It is the story of the Traveling Symphony, a troupe of Shakespearean actors orchestral musicians traveling the shores of the Great Lakes in a post-apocalyptic Michigan. It has been called the most positive post-apocalyptic book ever written. With time available, we will explore the genre of post-apocalyptic writing beyond this book. The publisher of the novel described it as “an ingenious blend of myth and history, humor and profundity; the sublime and the grotesque.” It starts with a young woman being abducted and whisked away in a black hot air balloon. Gradually, adventures of her four sisters unfold. Join Oates’ devotee Rose Kohut and explore this amazing saga, layer by mysterious layer. Please read section one (80 pages) for the first session. Religion, Meditation & Ethics Justice: What is the Right Thing to Do? Part 2 of 3 (165) Is murder ever right? How much is a life worth? Is redistribution taxation forced labor? Is it ever right to lie? These questions and more are the subject matter of Harvard professor Michael Sandel’s book and very popular course on the topic. This semester we will watch the second eight of his 24 lectures. Topics include the draft versus conscription, the free market system as it pertains to reproductive rights, fundamental duties and rights as the source of moral values, whether it is ever right to lie, how to design a fair society, the level playing field concept, and the fairness of modern pay distribution systems. Each 30 minute lecture will be followed by about 30 minutes of discussion. Though this class is the second in a series of three, each topic is interesting and worthwhile on its own so you may attend any combination of the three semesters. The class is moderated by OLLI member Carol Gohm.

My Life in the Foreign Service (164) What is life like as a U.S. Diplomat in Cuba, Brazil or Djibouti? In this class you will hear fascinating stories from OLLI member Dr. Kathleen List who spent 20 years as a U.S. Diplomat in these countries and others. Each session will focus on one of the countries. Now retired and living in Midland, List holds four degrees from the University of Michigan. She taught at the University of Michigan and at the American University of Paris. She received many awards during her career, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Meritorious Civilian Service Award, and a Medal of Valor for her service in Liberia. The Four Hallmarks of Buddhist Thought (166) This class will serve as an introduction to four essential Buddhist ideas that are commonly misunderstood by westerners. What is really meant by the following: all connected phenomena are impermanent; all contaminated phenomena are suffering; all phenomena are empty of inherent existence; and nirvana is peace? These topics will be discussed with regards to their relevance to the Buddhist path of perceptual, cognitive, and behavioral transformation. This class will be taught by Dr. Eric De Vos, Professor of Psychology at SVSU.

Mindfulness Meditation (167) Mindfulness meditation helps us learn to live in the present moment with non-judgmental awareness and acceptance of what is. It helps us to flow more easily with the ups and downs of our lives. It is a practice which helps to create a more peaceful mind and heart open to deeper wisdom. Controlled clinical studies of mindfulness-based meditation have documented reduction of physical and emotional distress and an increase in greater health and well being. Our leader is Nan Spence, who for the past 11 years has studied mindfulness with respected teachers and has been authorized to teach it by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Nan holds a Master’s Degree in Theology with an emphasis in spirituality. The class maximum is 16. Wednesdays: October 21, 28, November 4, 11, 18, December 2, 9 & 16 • 11 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. Price: $139 Members; $169 Non-Members Room: C140
Introduction to Western Esotericism (169) The Western esoteric traditions have their roots in a religious way of thinking, which reaches back to Gnosticism, Hermeticism, and Neoplatonism in the Hellenistic world during the first centuries AD. This class is meant to serve as an introduction to this growing field of study. The class will be convened by OLLI member Wayne O’Brien, a long-time student of esoteric topics. Wayne has convened a bi-monthly Esoteric Cosmology Group on campus for the past several years. If you are considering this class, please download the free pdf book, The Western Esoteric Traditions: A Historical Introduction by Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke and read the author’s introduction of an overview of this area of study before deciding to enroll. History & Philosophy of God (168) During this semester we will use the Learning Company’s study guide entitled How Jesus Became God by Bart Ehrman, from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. This is one of the more intriguing traditions/ theologies debated and developed in the early years of the Christian Church. The relationship of Jesus to God was a theological hot button and dominated the early Church debate for over three hundred years, as well as determining the final fate of a plethora of “different” interpretations of the young faith. Ehrman will guide us through the early period, when the followers of Jesus, known as the “Followers of the Way,” was a sect within the Jewish faith, to the period after the Jewish Synagogue banned them in 88 CE (beginning of Christianity), through the sorting out period of the Council of Nicea in 325 CE and the creed that declared Jesus as God. This is a very powerful program that will bring the latest academic thoughts concerning the early church, and in doing so may challenge your understanding of Christian doctrine. The class discussion will be led by OLLI member Ron Taylor. Thursdays: October 29, November 5, 12, December 3 & 10 • 9:30 a.m. - Noon Price: $32 Members; $62 Non-Members Room: C129

History
More Murder by the Bay and Other Dastardly Crimes (170) Tim Younkman, retired Bay City Times crime reporter, is back with more interesting local murder stories. One involves a 1937 bank robbery-murder in Midland in which a Bay City man was gunned down and one of the gunmen, Anthony Chebatoris, was convicted in federal court in Bay City and hanged for the crime, the only person to be executed in the State of Michigan. Another story deals with the 1885 attempted murder and robbery of an elderly woman who was the toll person at the toll house on the Tuscola Plank Road. Others include “The Mark of Cain” brother

killing a brother, a “child bride” murder case, and the murder of Bay City police officer Frank Kowalkowski in 1923. He will also consider whether Bonnie and Clyde had their eyes set on robbing a Bay City bank. Thursdays: September 10, 17 & 24 • 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Price: $23 Members; $46 Non-Members Room: C129
WWI: Part Two (1917 - 1918) (171) The United States entered the war on April 17, 1917, tipping the scales decisively for a victory by the Allied powers. Germany’s 1918 offensive was a desperate attempt to win before the weight of American power doomed the Central Powers. The military victory by the Allies was impressive, but the securing of a just, peaceful world much less so. Before long, freedom and peace were threatened by Fascist Italy, Imperial Japan, and Nazi Germany. Week one will cover the opening months of 1917, in week two we consider the U.S. entering the war, week three explores the German offensive of 1918 and the Allied counter offensive, and in the final week we discuss the end of the war and the results. The class will be led by Northwood University history professor, John Pafford.
Custer and the Civil War (173) When most people recall George Armstrong Custer, they picture him standing in the midst of terrible violence and destruction with his troops surrounding him at the Battle of Little Big Horn. In this class, we will meet one of the boldest officers of the Civil War. We’ll follow Custer as he leaves his boyhood home in Michigan to attend West Point, and then meet him again later in his natural element on the battlefields of the Civil War. We will meet Libby Custer and learn about the role she played as the wife of this famous general. Finally, we’ll meet the Midwest boys and men who were Custer’s and Stuart’s troops and learn about their equipment, mission, and fears as they rode through the bloodiest years of American History. The class will be led by Fred Welsh, a former industrial engineer and volunteer for the Bay County Historical Museum.

Thursdays: October 1, 8, 15 & 22 • 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C129
Viewers of PBS’s acclaimed series, Wolf Hall which was based on Hilary Mantel’s awardwinning novel, may have been surprised at the depiction of its main characters. Thomas Cromwell, the bully of Robert Bolt’s Osarwinning, A Man For All Season, was transformed into a humane servant, while Bolt’s saintly More is portrayed as a bitter torturer. Even more surprising is that the larger than life Henry VIII was relegated to the sidelines. This course explores which author got it right, and what these interpretations of 16th century men say about us in the 21st century. This class will be led by SVSU retired history professor Bob Braddock.
Saginaw’s Early History: 1850s to 1870s (174) After lumber was discovered in 1847, both Saginaws experienced exceptional growth during the 1850s to 1870s. The post-Civil War era was one of the most prosperous growth periods in Saginaw history. The lumber and salt industries obtained their labor from the large immigration to the Saginaw Valley. Local author Roselynn Ederer will discuss these three decades of history along with some events from her just published book, Saginaw Adventures With Georg.

Similarly to other courses led by Eric Gilbertson, course discussion will focus on rulings from recent cases decided by the United States Supreme Court in the 2014-15 term. These will include cases involving capital punishment, congressional redistricting, freedom of speech, the Affordable Care Act, same-sex marriages and others. China Rising... (185) The United States became a unipolar hegemon by default in December 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Unipolar hegemons have limited life spans for a number of reasons. Since the creation of the nation-state with the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648, the world has seen many hegemons – Spain, France and England are now former hegemons. The United States, at some point, will also become a former hegemon as our ability to dominate world affairs declines. The most likely candidate to replace the United States at present is China. This course will explore China rising. The class will be led by Jim Johnson, an adjunct political science professor and attorney.
World and United States Political Update (183) This course will combine our frequent global political update of trends and political events which shape our world with an in-depth look at the status of candidates and issues one year out from the 2016 presidential election. The first primaries will occur in a matter of weeks from this course and we will analyze which candidates are best positioned to make it through the maze of presidential politics. The class will be led by Jim Johnson, an adjunct political science professor and attorney.

Issues in the News (184) This class will discuss various issues currently in the news. There will be two topics in each of the four class periods. A 15-20 minute video from TED.com will present one speaker’s view of the issue. Each talk will be followed by class discussion of that topic. TED talks don’t just present a summary of events and their causes. They tend to focus on innovative ideas and broad issues. Topics include: how we’re priming kids for college versus prison; lack of law enforcement as a hidden reason for world poverty; people of Muslim heritage challenging fundamentalism; fighting injustice with hidden cameras; which country does the most good for the world; how not to be ignorant about the world; how equal do we want income to be worldwide; and the workforce crisis of 2030. The class will be moderated by OLLI member Carol Gohm.
