NEWS FROM THE CARMONA COLLEGE OF BUSINESS

Spring 2022

From the Dean Hello from the Scott L. Carmona College of Business (CCB). I'm pleased to update you about what CCB faculty, staff, students and alumni are doing. The CCB remains among the 5% of business schools worldwide to be accredited by AACSB International and with our new state-of-the-art facilities, the cutting-edge Wolohan Finance and Data Analytics Lab, the Strosacker Consumer Behavior Lab and the Product Innovation Lab, the CCB has had an exciting year despite the pandemic. In addition to the new building, which opened in spring of 2020, I am also excited to introduce myself as the new CCB dean. The mission of SVSU and the CCB inspired me to apply for the dean’s position. Much like SVSU, I believe in the value of an education with an emphasis on providing experiential learning opportunities for all students. With over 25 years of higher education experience at public and private institutions, I am a strong advocate of high-impact practices such as internships, cooperative education, global experiences, faculty-led research and service learning. All of these opportunities are made possible for today’s business students thanks to our dedicated faculty and staff as well as our alumni. While the opening of our new facility fell on the cusp of transitioning to an online learning format, we have been excited to be back on campus and fully utilizing all that’s available to us. Our classrooms, labs and study spaces are again filled with activity. The campus feels alive again and if you haven’t had a chance to see the new CCB facilities, I encourage you to stop by and see what our students get to experience every day. I hope to see you on campus soon. Jayati Ghosh Dean, Carmona College of Business

SCHOLARSHIP IMPACT Hannah Wickman is a logical thinker. So when she decided to pursue a degree in supply chain management, she researched colleges to determine which would offer her a positive academic experience, the opportunity to be exposed to different work environments and the ability to network and meet more people. Affordability and scholarship opportunities were also important considerations since Hannah would be funding college on her own. SVSU fit the bill. Hannah was excited about the Carmona College of Business, and she would be able to live with family in the area to save on housing costs. Even better: Hannah received scholarships that enabled her to attend college right out of high school rather than having to defer her dreams while she worked to earn more money. “I’ve paid all of my school so far on my own, without assistance from my family,” Hannah said, “so earning scholarships has eased the burden of working two to four part-time jobs while taking classes in order to pay tuition.” That scholarship support has also allowed Hannah to experience two internships that provided invaluable professional experienceand led to a co-op position in supply chain management at Dow. “This has reassured me of my love for my studies and opened up the door to a job opportunity after I graduate in May.” Hannah has accepted a full-time position with Dow in the Supply Chain Rotational Program beginning in May. Thanks to the generous support of donors, Hannah is on her way to a bright future.

“You are truly making a difference in people’s lives.”

HANNAH WICKMAN Hometown: Hartland Major: Supply Chain Management

“Earning scholarships has allowed me to attend college.”

Angelo Martinez dreams of helping people meet their financial goals. Thanks to scholarship support that made it possible for Angelo to attend SVSU, that dream is in sight. After discovering his affinity for accounting at Saginaw Township’s Heritage High School, Angelo enrolled at Delta College, working fulltime to pay for the classes he attended part-time. While Angelo’s large family provided a solid support network, he needed to look elsewhere for financial assistance. Transferring to SVSU opened up more opportunities. “I was finally able to qualify for more scholarships, enabling me to only need to work part-time while giving me enough time to study and join a variety of RSOs (registered student organizations) on campus,” Angelo said. At SVSU, Angelo was also able to complete two internships, which provided him with experience that has helped prepare him for his position with the Hantz Group, a company that offers a comprehensive range of financial services. He will begin working full-time following his graduation in May, when he will earn his Bachelor of Professional Accountancy degree. Thanks to the generosity of donors who provide scholarship support, Angelo has had the opportunity for a full “college experience” at SVSU. And through that experience, including participation in RSOs, events and community outreach, Angelo has built a network that will remain with him long after graduation.

SUPPORT FOR CARDINALS Help prepare Cardinals for successful careers Because of the transformative experience students receive through the Carmona College of Business, we want our graduates to be the first choice for employers. To help provide outstanding learning experiences through internships, cop-ops, study abroad, faculty research projects and service learning we need the support of our alumni and friends to help make these opportunities available to as many students as possible. Beyond support for student experiences, the College is seeking support for endowed positions, including an endowed chair position for the dean and endowed professorships in business analytics, marketing, finance, accounting and economics. A gift to the College of Business fund or to specific CCB scholarships can help provide needed financial assistance to today’s Cardinals to ensure they are prepared to meet the challenges of global business and be at the forefront of change in the ever-changing world economy. As a result of the total SVSU experience ― including careful selection of coursework outside of the College and participation in cultural and other campus events and activities ― students expect to gain a comprehensive, well-rounded education and develop a more global perspective of their environment.
