DAVID CLINE, PH.D. A SCIENCE EDUCATION PROFESSOR BY DAY AND A GUITARIST BY NIGHT I am a teacher who challenges students to think about why those of us called to teaching do so. I want my students to be teachers who are able to reach students who enter a class hating a subject and leave with a new passion. I am a guitar player. Music is like good teaching – you have to love what you do and never stop learning. Whether education or music, it’s about a sense of wonder.
i am
DEB HUNTLEY, PH.D. A SCIENTIST AND A CYCLIST I am the dean of the College of Science, Engineering & Technology. I like to stay connected to students, and so I regularly teach a chemistry class. I am a former research scientist and am proud of my research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and my collaboration with Nobel-prize winning chemist and mentor Roald Hoffmann of Cornell University. I am a bicyclist who loves to ride every chance I get. I have toured upstate New York, the Pacific Northwest, the Canadian Maritimes, and, of course, Michigan by bicycle. Biking is like learning – it’s about focus, persistence and the desire to keep pushing yourself.

DANILO SIRIAS, PH.D. A PROFESSOR OF MANAGEMENT AND A CHESS MASTER
AVA LEWIS, PH.D. A HEALTHCARE ADVOCATE WHO BLEEDS CARDINAL RED PRIDE”
I am a teacher who wants students to think about solutions to management problems, not just read the text. My role is to create activities that enable students to think about solutions and create the knowledge themselves. I am also a two-time Nicaraguan National Chess champion who knows that thinking several steps ahead and being strategic is important, whether it’s for a chess game or an important career move.
I am a professor of nursing who believes in community service, so my students see service projects tied into their learning and preparation. I am a proud supporter of SVSU athletics who tries to be in the stands or courtside for our teams. To me, RED PRIDE isn’t just what I say, it’s who I am.

BRIAN THOMAS, PH.D. A GARBOLOGIST AND A GUTSY ULTRA-MARATHONER I am “brianthesociologist” (.com) who thinks learning should take place in – and outside – the classroom and around the world. I am passionate about sustainability issues, and my students have been involved in on-campus recycling projects like “Trash the Courtyard” and “The Great SVSU Dumpster Dive.” I am an ultra-marathoner, which means races of more than 26.2 miles. It’s grueling, takes a lot of discipline, but in the end, is a natural high like no other.

Master of Business Administration
A new program for freshmen and sophomores, CARDINAL BUSINESS EDGE, is an application and interviewbased program for no more than 25 students. It is a leadership development program that combines courses, extracurricular activities, mentoring, team building and an international travel experience – at no charge – to selected students. The College of Business & Management is accredited by the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). Nationally, only 25 percent of business colleges are so recognized. AACSB accreditation is a hallmark of excellence in management education. It means the delivery of a superior degree program, learning through relevant and rigorous curricula, and starting salaries that are higher than what graduates from non-AACSB accredited schools might earn.

Heidi Lang I am a snorkeler and a student-focused advisor I am happiest when I am doing one of two things: any family activity involving water, and advising students on health professions (pre-professional programs). I have 10 years advising experience and am well-connected to the health care industry and post-graduate possibilities. My goal is to help students figure out what they can be and must do to reach their dream. I don’t have a crystal ball, but I can help students figure out the steps to maximize the best opportunities for their future.
Robert (Bob) Lane I am a leader of pre-law field trips who loves biking, hiking and a woman named Sheryl I am a professor of political science and pre-law advisor. I enjoy my role as teacher, but I also like helping students make informed decisions about law school. One way they do that is through our annual law school trip to Chicago. I am also a hiker, rails-to-trails-biker, and reader who loves sharing it all with my wife.

Elyse Ledy Currently: Senior majoring in communication, minoring in management; expects to graduate in December 2012 “I love the fact that our peer advisors (for First Year Programs) really empower students to get the best education they can. For me, it’s really cool because I get to influence students by sharing with them my experiences of what it was like to change my major and struggling through different classes. I can talk to them about finding what was the best fit for me and where to find the resources on campus that can help. After talking with me, I hope students realize they have a lot of potential and they can do whatever they want instead of what others want for them. Helping students help themselves – that’s what I really like to do.” At SVSU: • President of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club • A member of the National Residence Hall Honorary • A mentor in the Living Leadership Program • A board member of “Forever Red” • An intramural volleyball player • A tutor in the Writing Center • A President’s Scholarship recipient • A member of the Music-n-Motion West Coast Swing RSO (Registered Student Organization)
