College is about preparation – academic, personal and professional. It’s about learning, inside and outside the classroom. It’s about internships and inquiry; hitting the books and sometimes hitting the wall; research and writing; digging an urban garden as a volunteer project and digging deeper to find answers. It’s about simple college “stuff” and complex studies. And it’s about opportunities. Lots of them. At SVSU, we like to say that there are more opportunities than there are students to take advantage of them.

Throughout this viewbook, you will see various “Points of Red Pride” that speak to many of the reasons why at SVSU you get to write the script that begins with “I am” and ends with the exceptional things you will learn, do and become.

SVSU is a regional teaching university with an emphasis on undergraduate programs and student engagement. Teaching is the priority. No classes are taught by teaching assistants so professors know you and are with you on your academic journey. Classes average 23 students, so learning is powerful – and personal.

05 For Fun: Dr. Pierce loves to knit and sew, everything from purses to iPad cases and home décor items. “It lets me express myself creatively,” she says.

College of Arts & Behavioral Sciences Amy Pierce, Ph.D. Communication “There’s a saying that the top two fears are death and public speaking,” Dr. Pierce says. “What would be worse is to die while delivering a speech.” It’s a joke, but Dr. Pierce is aware of the anxiety many students face enrolling in her public speaking course. Seeing her students persevere is one reason Pierce enjoys her role as teacher. “It’s satisfying to see a student who can barely deliver their first presentation, and by the end of the semester, they are confident and well organized.” Along with her classroom achievements, Dr. Pierce founded a forensics program that competes nationally and developed an annual SVSU-hosted public speaking event organized in part by her students, the Sims Public Speaking contest.

For Fun: Dr. Anekal is an avid fan of cricket, a baseball-like sport popular in his home country of India and the Commonwealth of Nations.

For Fun: With gardening as her hobby, Dr. Jones thinks that it’s the similarity between teaching and gardening that makes each an important part of her life. “I help plant seeds that celebrate beauty and uniqueness.”

College of Business & Management Prsahanth Anekal, Ph.D. Supply Chain Management

College of Education Barbara Jean Jones, Ph.D. Teacher Education

Assistant Professor Anekal specializes in supply chain management, taking products from conception to sale. The course work and new SVSU degree is perfectly suited for students looking for a career in the region or the Midwest at large. “There’s a lot of opportunity, in terms of jobs, in supply chain management,” Dr. Anekal notes. “This is one of the fastest-growing professions, and SVSU is connected to a lot of businesses in need of these employees.”

Dr. Jones was an educator in the Saginaw Public Schools for more than 10 years before she realized she wanted to make a larger impact and joined SVSU so she could teach the teachers of tomorrow. “I am passionate about working with education students so they may effectively teach all students, regardless of ethnicity or socio-economic status. It’s important to prepare our future teachers for content delivery, but in the global world we live in, it’s also imperative that we explore classroom management and diversity issues.”

College of Health & Human Services Elizabeth (Beth) Roe, Ph.D. Nursing

College of Science, Engineering & Technology Brooks Byam, Ph.D. Mechanical Engineering

When asked what makes SVSU’s nursing program unique, Dr. Roe is quick with answers: seats, simulation, study abroad and student support. Its 96 “seats” makes it the largest B.S.N. program in Michigan, and constant work in simulation labs imitates clinical settings. Faculty-led study abroad programs deal with global healthcare and students are supported through mentoring, networking and financial support for research projects. Dr. Roe describes her own teaching style as interactive rather than lecture-based. “I use my personal experiences and engage students through real life examples,” she says.

It’s difficult to pin down Professor Byam about what he loves most about teaching, but it likely occurs outside the classroom. “More than 80 percent of our engineering classes have a lab or hands-on component,” notes Dr. Byam. The focus of the ABET-accredited program is experiential learning, research, co-ops and internships. The results, says Byam, is an exceptional student learning experience. A profile of Professor Byam isn’t complete without a mention of his 1998 start-up of SVSU’s Cardinal Formula Racing program. Over the years, SVSU has been a part of the international competition that involves 120 college programs and has placed sixth in 2002, eigth in 2005, 14th in 2010, and finished first overall in the acceleration category in 2008 and 2014.

People like Dr. Mamie Thorns (special assistant to the president for diversity programs), who has been in my corner and still inspires me. Dr. Eric Gardner (professor of English) has opened doors and opportunities for me. Dr. Kenneth Jolly (professor of history) always gave me opportunities to participate in events that would enhance my education, and Dr. Dawn Hinton (professor of sociology) is the epitome of the type of professor I want to be.” At SVSU: • Member and various officer roles, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Rho Mu Chapter • Founder, “EXPRESSIONS,” a poetry society featuring open mic nights and poetry slams • Participant, various community service projects • Member and co-founder, Black @ SVSU

I knew no English and started in SVSU’s ‘English as a Second Language’ program and within eight months was a student of the College of Business & Management. I had an amazing experience at SVSU. Professor of Accounting Mark McCartney encouraged me to get my B.P.A. It was great advice and I passed the CPA exam the first time. Assistant Professor of English Chris Giroux encouraged me as a writer, which was helpful with all of my classes. In oncology (where I now work), you are a caregiver not only for the patient but in many ways, for the patient’s family. I love that aspect of my job. At SVSU, the simulations really help you build confidence and learn how to deal with stress. The nursing professors are awesome. I could go to them and they would help me find answers. Dan Weller

2014, B.S., chemical physics, minor in mathematics Currently: a doctoral candidate at MSU in material science and engineering. Ultimate goal is to be a professor and help motivate students to consider careers in science. “I was a partner in research at SVSU doing work normally reserved for graduate students. Research at SVSU is one-on-one. You’re not part of a team of 10 or 20; it’s a more personal approach to research. That personal attention is the same in the classroom, not just the lab. Many of my classes had 10-12 students. Professors at SVSU have a student’s education as a top priority. Their research is important but it’s all about the student. These professors know you. That’s part of the reason I received an internship at Iowa State in 2013 and 2014 doing work for the U.S. Department of Energy. It was all due to my SVSU experiences and professors.” At SVSU: • President’s Scholarship • Member of “Encore,” a singing/performing student organization • Member, Chemistry Club • Member, Physics Club • Honors Program • Presenter, Michigan Academy of Science, Arts & Letters • Researcher • Tutor, Center for Academic Achievement • Resident, Living Center South and University Village

I am studying in Chicago to obtain my master’s degree in prosthetics and orthotics.

“My preparation for grad school was about all of the experiences I had at SVSU. Certainly, I had great academic opportunities. I traveled abroad to China to study their healthcare system and presented my research at the Midwest Conference of the American College of Sports Medicine. My internship is what steered me to my graduate studies, but the opportunities for leadership were equally important. I had opportunities to network and join and lead organizations. That boosted my confidence tremendously. When I think about it … from Bad Axe to Chicago and now living downtown, overlooking Navy Pier … it’s all because of SVSU.” At SVSU: • Resident Assistant, South East Community • Homecoming committee • Director, Forever Red • Peer Advisor • Secretary, Student Exercise Association • Member, National Residence Hall Honorary Member, National Society for Leadership and Success • Participant, Alternative Breaks   PREPROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS

Ariel Simms

2012, B.A. psychology and French double major, criminal justice minor

19

Currently: Third year law student at Harvard Law School. After finishing law school, Ariel hopes to pursue a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. She might consider a career in public policy reform, targeting mental health and disability advocacy and how to influence reform on a national level. Ultimately, she may return to academia as a law professor to educate attorneys about mental health issues and how essential psychology is in the practice of law. “The education I had at SVSU was phenomenal. I think what SVSU did was help me learn to reach out to others, interact as a professional and network with professors. Working as a researcher and an assistant in the psychology department, I gained experience with research subjects and learned how to write grants for research funding. And I was able to use my honors thesis (on the neurobiology of posttraumatic stress disorder) in my grad school applications. I think it showed that I’m willing to do research and put in the time and effort to make a really good academic product.” At SVSU: • President’s Scholarship • Honors Program • Recipient, Outstanding Senior in French award • Member, Psi Chi • Member, La Societe Francais (French Club) • Member, Alpha Mu Gamma (national foreign language honor society) • Participant in Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF), teaching English in French school for seven months

I am an Ivy League law student.

FIELD-BASED LEARNING

84% of SVSU students have engaged with community employers and agencies in internships, field placement and course-based community service by their senior year.

SVSU promotes field-based studies, internships and other types of applied learning experiences

Without a doubt, SVSU has the kind of classrooms you’d expect for a modern campus. They are wireless with all sorts of technology tools for teachers. But that’s only where some of the learning happens:

LEARNING IS ON CAMPUS

LEARNING IS IN THE REGION

LEARNING IS IN THE WORLD

Such as at an international food festival or at a late evening meeting of one of the more than 150 registered student organizations where students learn about leadership and teamwork.

With an internship, a community service project, or a class outing to a university business partner.

With study abroad and travel opportunities offered by several selective, competitive leadership programs.

SVSU marketing students spend a semester working on a “real” project that is client-funded. They produce a marketing plan, help bring a product to market, analyze audiences and develop budgets.

SVSU political science and public administration majors participate in internships in Lansing and Washington, D.C.

Keshara Mumford Currently: social work major and criminal justice minor. She has worked for the last two years with the United Way of Saginaw County’s Healthy Futures Partnership AmeriCorps program, designed to help improve the lives of Saginaw youths. “I truly believe in the expression ‘one person can make a difference.’ I may not be able to fix every issue that a community or child faces, but I can help.” At SVSU: • Participant, Alternative Breaks • Member, Delta Sigma Theta • Member, Criminal Justice Society • Member, Social Work Club • Member, Red and White Brigade

PROGRAMS OF DISTINCTION

Courtney Seamon Currently: Senior marketing major, management minor. Plans to graduate May 2016. Goal is to join an experiential marketing agency. “Going into the Roberts Fellows Program, I thought it was ‘just’ about leadership. In hindsight, I see that the subject of leadership was really indirectly learned. The program is more about personal growth and self-discovery. We set goals at the beginning and mine focused on areas of improvement, ways I can be a better leader. I’ve gained so much confidence and learned that I can handle just about anything. The best lessons I took away were learning to be comfortable and that all of learning is a process.” At SVSU: • President’s Scholar • Member, Cardinal Business Edge “Faculty mentoring advice was incredible. I learned never be afraid of making a mistake; you can fix things. So work hard…that’s what matters.” • Researcher, working with the dean of the College, a nationally renowned researcher on Super Bowl ad likeability. • Co-presenter of research at Marketing Management Association Conference in Chicago, 2015 • Foundation Scholar • Member, National Society of Collegiate Scholars • Member, Beta Gamma Sigma, business honors club • Orientation Leader

I am a goal setter focused on becoming a better leader.

A recent Gallup poll suggests that students who attend “prestigious” colleges are no more likely to be “engaged” with their work or “thriving” in their lives than those students who attended a regional state school.

I am studying a “Top 10” Major.

SVSU is a public university with personal attention usually found at much smaller institutions, and offering a great value.

The Princeton Review’s Top 10 Majors are all available at SVSU 1. Business Administration and Management 2. Psychology 3. Nursing 4. Biology 5. Education 6. English Language/Literature 7. Economics 8. Communication/Rhetoric 9. Political Science 10. Computer Information Science This list of the top 10 majors by the Princeton Review is either directly associated with careers or degrees that are applicable to various careers.

From the May 2014 Gallup poll “Graduates who said they had a ‘mentor who encouraged my hopes and dreams,’ ‘professors who cared about me,’ and at least one professor who ‘made me excited about learning’ are three times more likely to be thriving at work. In a similar vein, grads who did long-term projects and internships and were heavily into extracurricular activities are twice as likely to be engaged in their careers.”

It also helps you navigate campus, connect to successful alumni and become familiarized with university resources and “help” centers.

This is a student engagement and success program where upper-class students help answer questions about majors, course registration and learning how to best manage college life.

No matter what major you’ve chosen, communication skills are critical. The Writing Center helps students studying any discipline. From freshman papers to graduate school applications, staff and student mentors are available to help.

Undergraduate Research Program is available to all students and is designed to enhance research experiences. Both faculty and student-led research projects can be funded and funding includes materials, supplies, travel and participation in academic and professional conferences. The student-led Herbert H. & Grace A. Dow Science & Creativity Institute funds projects up to $5,000.

Olivia Halabicky Currently: Fourth year nursing student. Will graduate in December 2015. Ultimate career goal: nurse midwife or women’s health nurse practitioner.

STUDENT SUCCESS

29

“I am paying for my education, so it was very important for me to receive financial support and be able to finish school in a timely way. I received the President’s Scholarship (full tuition covered) and was admitted into the nursing program my freshman year. I have been a student research assistant for Dr. Elizabeth Roe and was able to co-present our findings at a national conference in May 2015. I’ve also been a wellness intern for Peer Health Educators and a student mentor in the nursing lab. And, I was able to use my Foundation Scholar’s stipend to study abroad in London.”

At SVSU: • President’s Scholar • Foundation Scholar • Research Assistant • Student Mentor, nursing lab • Senior orientation leader, Academic Advising • Studied Abroad • Student Representative for nursing program’s accreditation task force • Member, Student Nurses Association • Member, Sigma Theta Tau, nursing honors society

I am a nursing student, researcher and wellness intern.

SVSU is small enough for personal relationships but big enough for choices.

I am proud to represent “opportunities and choices” — my experiences have been awesome!

Marianna Cuevas Currently: Fourth year social work major, psychology minor with plans to graduate in May 2016 and attend grad school. “At SVSU, you don’t have to go looking for opportunities; the opportunities find you. Before I came to SVSU, I never viewed myself as a leader but when I pursued opportunities based on my passions, I was suddenly a leader.” At SVSU: • Participant in Alternative Breaks to Nicaragua, environmental restoration • Site Leader, Alternative Breaks to North Carolina, youth development • Media and PR chair – e-board • Study Abroad to India • Member, Phi Alpha Honor Society, Delta Omega chapter • Peer Advisor, Academic Advising • Teacher, Zumba, SVSU Campus Recreation • Club Red Ambassador • Member, National Society of Leadership and Success • Member, National Society of Collegiate Scholars • Orientation Leader • Intern for Student Wellness Program in Peer Health Educators program • Intern, summer of 2015 at the Arnold Center, Midland • Intern, Student Life

SVSU REGISTERED STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS Research overwhelmingly indicates that extracurricular activities clearly benefit students’ academic achievements. There is a positive correlation between student engagement and student learning and “persistence to graduation.” That’s why learning at SVSU doesn’t stop when the class is over.

Alyssa Briolat

Currently: Third year student, elementary education, special education with Autism Spectrum Disorder endorsement. Ultimate goal is to teach pre-school through second grade. “I always knew it was SVSU for me. It’s far enough away (home is Ubly, MI) but close to home and it has such a highly regarded education program. In my freshman year, I lived in Living Center South as part of the Foundation Scholars program. It was immediately like a family with a real sense of community. Living on campus, you learn about yourself, gain confidence and make great friends. And the SVSU residential facilities are the best. I’ll be a Resident Assistant in 2015-2016 and it’s just a great chance to help others feel the way I did when I started at SVSU.” At SVSU: • President’s Scholarship • Member, Student Michigan Education Association • Intramural Volleyball • Foundation Scholar “I want to use the stipend to go to SVSU’s sister school in India” • Resident Assistant • Participant in Alternative Breaks, 2014 • Recipient of National Residence Hall Honorary Student of the HOUSING Month, January 2015 • Works in the housing department • Volunteer, Cardinals for Special Olympics • Southeast Community Council President, 2014-2015 • Member, Forever Red

If you have an open mind and high expectations, you will really enjoy the Living Leadership Program.” At SVSU: • Selected as one of 1,000 summer interns (2014) for Quicken Loans • Campus Ambassador for Quicken Loans • Special events chair, public relations chair for Alpha Sigma Alpha • Member, Delta Sigma Pi • Manager, SVSU women’s basketball team • Fellow, Vitito Global Leadership Institute, an SVSU Program of Distinction • Member, Living Leadership Program

As a site-leader for Alternative Breaks, it’s your project and your team. You are in charge of arranging it all: interviewing and selecting your team, getting your group to bond, creating a budget, fundraising and learning about the social issue of your project.” Mike and Alternative Breaks: • 2012-2013 • 2013-2014 • 2014-2015

I am becoming a global citizen, and I will never be the same. Study Abroad programs at SVSU range from 10-day, faculty-led trips to full semester and yearlong programs. Study Abroad scholarships are available.

STUDY ABROAD

Brendan Tully 2014, B.B.A., international business. Proficiency in Chinese Currently: owner, “Everywhere You Go Advertising” “I guess I’ve always been about exploring new paths. A lot of my friends were going to another school and I wanted new experiences and new friends, and so I chose SVSU. My first Study Abroad was a faculty-led program to Bulgaria. It was the first time I was exposed to a different culture, on top of which it is a post-Soviet society. It made me want more. In 2012, I studied for a full semester in Taiwan at SVSU’s sister university and taught English. In the winter of 2014, I went to India and in spring of 2014, I visited Prague as part of the Vitito Fellows program. Why study abroad? You don’t have your social norm and you can’t blend in, so you really become the person you are. You see yourself – and others – differently. You become more open to ‘different’ and learn to be less judgmental.” At SVSU: • Member and Vice President, AIESEC (organization developing global leadership opportunities)

It’s a real glance at leadership, off and on the field, as you have to fundraise, book locations, and oversee try-outs. In high school, I played three sports but didn’t do a lot more. Here, I was encouraged to study hard and get involved and it’s been great.” At SVSU: • Dodgeball team (club sports) • Flag football (intramural sports) • Honors Program • Member, National Society of Leadership & Success • Representative, Student Association • Member, National Residence Hall Honorary and Residence Hall Association • Orientation Leader • University Affairs Chair for the Student Association of Michigan

(Athletic Director) Mike Watson asked me to visit schools to share with younger students the message ‘education before athletics.’ It’s been an honor. Athletics and academics work together. They both require discipline. It’s the same discipline to wake up at 5 a.m. to lift weights as it is to study for a class at 5 p.m. or practice piano at 8 p.m. “ At SVSU: • Three-time National All-Academic Team • Athletic focus: hammer, weight, discus, shot • Cardinal Scholarship • Rhea Miller Music Scholarship • Track and Field Scholarship

Accepted to the University of Denver’s Master of Arts in international human rights. “The quality education and opportunities I received from SVSU are hard to describe. Getting my bachelor’s degree was something important to me but once I was here, it was less about a degree obligation and more about a meaningful part of my story. I have worked full-time and have a range of loans. All have been manageable and now I am headed to graduate school. My dream job would be working for the United Nations or a faith-based non-profit organization, likely in southeast Asia or Nepal.” At SVSU: • Member, CJ Society • Member, Law Club • Member, Moot Court • Member, Roberts Fellows Program • Internship with Saginaw’s Underground Railroad

Natalie Schneider Currently: Third year business management major, with French minor. Ultimate goal is to be a college professor. “Having such great scholarship support has enabled me to take advantage of so many opportunities at SVSU. With my plans to attend grad school, I will be able to do so with very little debt. I’ve received the Dean’s Scholarship, Foundation Scholarship, Don C. Law Memorial Scholarship (for business majors) and been accepted into the Wolohan Fellows Program. The Fellows opportunity has been exceptional and I’ve learned so much about teamwork, pride in our region and the value of making connections. I view my education as my responsibility and getting scholarship support has enabled me to ‘own’ that. I don’t have to worry. I can focus on classes and getting involved.” At SVSU: • Recipient, multiple scholarships • University Village West resident • Member, La Societe Francais (French Club) • Member, Alpha Mu Gamma (Foreign Language Society) • Pledge for Delta Sigma Pi (business fraternity) • Club Red Tour Guide • Peer Advisor, Academic Advisement Center • Studied Abroad, London (using Foundation Scholar’s stipend)

The Dean’s Scholarship has helped tremendously and as a Resident Assistant, I earn full room and board. I have had incredible opportunities (already) to do research with Dr. Lang (professor of biology) and will soon begin writing my Honors thesis; it is a study of sexual development/differentiation in mammals. With Dr. Nakamura (assistant professor of physics), I am working on a psychology study regarding why students do or don’t choose to study the sciences.” At SVSU: • Honors Program • Resident Assistant, Living Center South • E-board member, Honors Corp • Club Tennis • Member, Optimist Club • Researcher
