SVSU-OLLI Interest Groups Over the years, we have learned that people join OLLI for two major reasons. The first is the opportunity to learn new things and travel; but a secondary, and sometimes more important reason, is the opportunity to meet new friends who have similar interests. Our Interest Groups bring together members who have similar interests or hope to meet others socially. From time to time we hear that our members would like to start a new Interest Group. The first step of the process is to find a group leader. This is the person who communicates with the group members, and works with the OLLI office to secure a meeting place and a regular meeting time. If you are interested in leading a group, or want to learn more about the process, contact Jo Brownlie at (989)964-4310 or email her at jap@svsu.edu.

Help Stop the Diabetes Epidemic

Presenter: Shahrukh Hashmi, MD, Family Medicine Physician Diabetes is serious, common and costly. But more importantly, it is controllable. The diabetes ‘epidemic’ is on the rise. Nearly 30 million Americans have diabetes. That’s about one out of every 11 people and of that number, one out of four do not even know they have it because diabetes is, often times, a silent thief. Physical symptoms are rarely noticeable until complications develop. If left untreated or uncontrolled, diabetes can lead to serious health complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness, and even lower-limb amputations. Dr. Hashmi, primary care physician with St. Mary’s of Michigan, will talk about the seriousness of this epidemic, and what you can do to reduce your risk of getting diabetes. He’ll discuss risk factors that increase the chances of developing diabetes, such as increased age; one third of those with diabetes are 65 years and older. As our population continues to age, gain weight, and become less physically active, Dr. Hashmi and his colleagues are working diligently to identify and respond effectively to people with diabetes to help improve their health outcomes.

There is GOOD News!

Presenter: Danielle Schmidt, RD, Wound Care Center Program Director However, there is good news. Scientific evidence now shows that treatment of diabetes with diet and physical activity can delay or even prevent much of the illness and complications associated with diabetes. Eating a healthy, balanced diet will not only help control diabetes, it will also boost your energy and improve your mood. Danielle Schmidt, registered dietitian and wound care program director will assure you that you don’t have to give up sweets entirely or resign yourself to a lifetime of bland food. She will share some helpful tips on how you can still take pleasure from your meals without feeling hungry or deprived. She’ll also provide myths and facts about diabetes and diet. As the director at the St. Mary’s of Michigan Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center, Danielle knows all too well that diabetes and wounds are a dangerous combination. She will discuss several reasons why people with diabetes are at increased risk for complications from wound healing and why feet are more at risk for diabetes wounds. She’ll have you checking your feet more often and give you hope that delicious healthy meals really do exist.

Bring a Friend!

This program is free for members and potential members – there is no need to pre-register. Guests may attend one monthly meeting without a charge. If guests come more than once they either need to join OLLI or pay a $10 fee per meeting. OLLI members who bring a guest will be put in a drawing to win a $10 voucher, and their guest will also win a free membership! Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Wednesday, February 10, 2016 Childhood Memories From WWII Presented by Anneke Burke-Kooistra

Anneke Burke-Kooistra was only four years old when her father, who had joined the underground movement when WWII began, started harboring Jews in their home in Ulrecht, Holland. She and her two sisters, one eight and the other one only a toddler, were never allowed to see the people living in their home, and never knew about their parents’ mission until after the war. For three years, from 1942 to 1945, the eight refugees lived in a hidden space which had been dug beneath the floorboards. Illegal radios and ammunition were also kept in that space. In 1945, the girls discovered the truth when Anneke’s father woke the children and introduced them to the refugees. Anneke currently resides in Mayville, where she spent 40 years with her husband Donald Burke. She continues to pass on the legacy of her family’s heroic efforts by telling the story as told to her.

Wednesday, March 9, 2016 The World of Coca-Cola Presented by Lee Scott

Our March meeting will include an interesting look at the development, history, facts and rumors about Coca-Cola and The Coca-Cola Company from its beginning in 1886 to present day. You’ll learn about Confederate Colonel John Pemberton, who was wounded in the Civil War and developed the prototype Coca-Cola recipe in a quest to find a substitute for the dangerous opiate morphine. You’ll also learn about the many variations which have been introduced throughout the years. Our presenter is Lee Scott, a retired Vice President of the company and a veteran of 50 years in the soft drink industry. Following his retirement in 2001, he has continued to work for The Coca-Cola Company, focusing his efforts in the government relations field and community affairs.

Wednesday, April 13, 2016 Alaska’s Denali National Park: Through a Camera Lens Presented by Kent Miller

Join Central Michigan University associate professor of photojournalism Kent Miller on an enjoyable photographic journey through Denali National Park. Miller has spent quite a bit of time at the park since 2008 when he volunteered to shoot photographs for the National Park Service. Since then, Miller has created an internship program with the National Parks Service. He wanted his students at CMU to have the same experience he had learning in what he calls “one of the most beautiful places on Earth.” He has been back many times over the past seven years and even taught a photography workshop for senior citizens in 2012 and 2013. His current undertaking is a commemorative photo exhibition for the 100-year anniversary of the Park in 2017. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

(20) The Tender Land, an Opera by Aaron Copeland

The Tender Land is the quintessential American opera composed by Aaron Copeland, the Dean of American composers. His music is readily recognizable and speaks of the American landscape. The opera is about a traditional, humble, rural 1930s family suspicious of outsiders and their morals. When two worldly drifters arrive seeking work on the Moss family farm, their daughter Laurie, about to graduate from high school, falls in love with one of them and is torn between her roots and her desire to explore the world. This production, presented by the Michigan Opera Theatre, will be held at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts. Our package includes seating at the 11 a.m. dress rehearsal performance, an expansive family-style lunch afterwards at Maggiano’s Little Italy in Troy, and deluxe motorcoach transportation from SVSU. Attracting Wildlife with Native Landscaping (201)

The Zoo Comes to OLLI (203)

Four walls and a roof might constitute a house, but you don’t necessarily want to live in every house you see! Likewise, birds, butterflies and other wildlife might pass THROUGH your yard, but do they really want to spend much time there? This threesession class will give you the details you need for determining what native plants and natural features (water, rocks, shelter, housing, etc.) you could add to create a wildlife habitat in your backyard. Which specific trees, flowers, vines and shrubs are the best food sources for birds? Which ones create the best habitat for butterflies and other native pollinators? And really, is there ANYTHING a deer won’t eat?! (The short answer is “no.”) Naturalist Janea Little, of the private nature consulting firm Little’s Touch of Nature, will help you in making selections and plans for your native landscaping efforts, as well as provide helpful tips in removing or preventing certain wildlife you might not want to attract after all.

The Children’s Zoo in Saginaw will be starting its 87th year of operation in 2016. The first two class sessions will be held at SVSU and feature visits from several non-human residents of the zoo. You’ll learn about the history of the zoo and carousel, and the future plans for one of the region’s best loved attractions. The third class will meet at the zoo where you will be given a guided tour which will include many “behind the scenes” stops known only to a few human staff members and perhaps a ride on the carousel at Celebration Square. The class will be led by zoo volunteer and OLLI member Roger Spann along with a zoo staff member. This is sure to be an enjoyable class, especially for animal-lovers. Thursdays: April 7, 14 & 21 • 1 - 3 p.m. Price: $23 Members; $43 Non-Members Room: C129/Off-Site

Fridays: March 11, 18 & 25 • 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Price: $23 Members; $46 Non-Members Room: C129

Geologic Wonders Continued (202)

In this class, we will rely on material from The World’s Greatest Geological Wonders: 36 Spectacular Sites, one of the Great Course programs. OLLI member and retired science teacher Bob Enszer will be your guide. Our destinations will include the Grand Canyon, the Himalayas, Bryce Canyon, Ayers Rock, Fiordland, Yellowstone, Iceland, the Dead Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Gender, Sex and Sexual Orientation 101 (208)

Prior to Caitlyn Jenner being interviewed by Diane Sawyer on network television in April 2015, most people in America had never seen a transgender person – as far as they knew. Two months later, the Supreme Court ruled that states could not ban same-sex marriage. When filling out a job application or school registration form you are often asked to provide your name, address, phone number, birth date, and sex or gender. But have you ever been asked to provide your sex AND gender? It may not have occurred to you that sex and gender are not the same. However, sociologists and most other social scientists view sex, sexual orientation, and gender as conceptually distinct. It’s a new world, and Charin Davenport, an activist and leader in the Transgender Community, will provide a tour of the basics of gender, sex, and sexual orientation. She will help you understand the differences between the three, as well as the issues, the terms, and the political and social challenges ahead.

Emerging Technologies and YOU: Securely Navigating the Virtual World

Tuesday: April 19 from 4 - 5 p.m. Room: Banquet C

Tuesday: February 23 from 4 - 5 p.m. Room: Banquet C

The Emergency Medical Service (EMS) industry has seen a tremendous amount of technological advancements in the last few years. This includes electronic patient care records, computer-aided dispatch or CAD, call-predictability software, prearrival instructions, statewide radio system, automatic vehicle locators and more. Steve Myers, MMR’s Director of Patient Access, will discuss these technology advancements and give a history of how and where the industry began. He will also discuss technology and equipment inside the ambulance and the technology used in their fleet maintenance program. MMR’s Medical Communications Center was the first in the state of Michigan to earn accreditation by the International Academy of Emergency Dispatch.

It’s often said that “There are two types of technology: prototype and obsolete.” It seems that we just get used to one device, then another newer model arrives. New devices are emerging constantly. Are you stymied by the security and privacy setting offered? Are you afraid to plug-in? Are you vulnerable? Michigan’s Chief Security Officer, Christian Kopacsi, will offer insights into emerging technology and provide key steps to take to protect yourself in the virtual world. He’ll answer questions and provide real-life examples to help you make informed decisions about technology and its expanding role in our lives.

Possible selections may be drawn from Robert Root, Postscripts: Retrospections on Time and Place; Margaret Drabble, The Pattern in the Carpet: A Personal History of Jigsaws; Kathleen Dean Moore, Holdfast: At Home in the Natural Worlds; and Tony Judt, The Memory Chalet. The class will be led by Dr. Kay Harley, a retired SVSU Professor of English. There is not a reading assignment for the first session.

Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman: The Enigma That is Atticus Finch (257)

The great Southern author, Flannery O’Connor, once wrote of To Kill a Mockingbird, “for a child’s book it does all right. It’s interesting that all the folks that are buying it don’t know they’re reading a child’s book.” This discussion-based course will provide an opportunity to revisit these characters from adult perspectives and determine whether or not we agree with O’Connor’s assessment. We will also be discussing Lee’s controversial

History & Philosophy of God (260)

During this semester we will continue our review of the Learning Company’s series entitled How Jesus Became God, by Bart Ehram. In the previous session we focused on the early years of Christianity and the many conflicting views of Christ’s relationship to God. We reviewed first-century beliefs of gods becoming human and the idea of humans obtaining a position in the divine world, as well as the struggle of Christianity to bring competing theologies into a coherent story. We will continue on this process through the first several centuries of the common era until we reach the defining creed of the young church, written in 325 CE at the council of Nicea. The class discussion will be led by OLLI member Ron Taylor.

Writing Your Life, One Piece at a Time (258)

You’ll learn ways to build a compelling narrative and examples of forms that the stories might take. The class is led by Marylou Bugh, an OLLI member who holds an MFA from Goddard College in Vermont and has 30 years of teaching, from elementary to college students. She has had several short stories and nonfiction pieces published. The class fee includes her book, Writing Your Life, One Piece at a Time.

If you aren’t familiar with the exquisite writing of Anita Brookner, join this class! Brookner, whose first book appeared in print when she was 53, is known for her introspective books about loners. These individuals, who often work in bookish surroundings, take lengthy walks as they mull over their situations in life. For the first session, read her best-known work, Hotel du Lac. The book relates the story of a romance author who has been banished by her friends to a stately hotel in Switzerland. Move on to A Friend From England for the second meeting. It features a woman named Rachel who becomes closely aligned with a friend’s parents. Mindfulness meditation helps us learn to live in the present moment with non-judgmental awareness and acceptance of what is. It helps us to flow more easily with the ups and downs of our lives. It is a practice which helps to create a more peaceful mind and heart open to deeper wisdom. Controlled clinical studies of mindfulness-based meditation have documented reduction of physical and emotional distress and an increase in greater health and well being. Our leader is Nan Spence, who for the past 11 years has studied mindfulness with respected teachers and has been authorized to teach it by Jon Kabat-Zinn. “Lost” Bay County History Revealed (267)

History

How many of you remember using the phrase, “Do you remember when...” Many people, places, and things from our history have been “lost” to time, disaster, or the inevitable advance of progress. Some of this history still resides in our collective memory, while the physical part has been all but wiped away. Others are hiding in plain sight while their unique story has been forgotten. Like an archaeologist seeks to unearth physical remnants of the past, historians seek to uncover photographs, documents, oral histories and other resources to help us remember these “lost” pieces of our collective history. Join Ron Bloomfield, Chief Historian of the Bay County Historical Society, as he uncovers a sampling of Bay County’s rich history, from pioneers to shipbuilders, world-class businesses to unique coincidences, and many other items from the “Do you remember...” files.

A Centennial Assessment of the Causes and Consequences of World War I

Saturday, April 9: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Grace A. Dow Memorial Library 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the second full year of WWI. The causes of the war remain mysterious, its consequences ambiguous, and its effects on race, gender, civil liberties, and social morals profound. In remembrance of “The Great War,” the Midland County Historical Society, the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library, and SVSU are sponsoring a one-day conference devoted to the many facets of the era. Talks, displays, and discussions by local historians and members of the SVSU history department will present ways in which the war intersected with the Midland Community. For a listing of speakers and the agenda visit www.mcfta.org and click on “special events” and then “lectures.” The cost is $10 for adults and $8 for students and includes lunch. You may register online or call the MCFTA Box Office at 989-631-8250.

The American Civil War (268)

The Civil War conflict led to cultural and political changes that have reverberated to the present. There were more deaths in it than any other war in U.S. history. Yet out of it came, over time, an overall increase in freedom, a more unified nation, and remarkable economic growth. Within several decades, the U.S. became the most powerful nation in the world. The class will be led by Northwood University history professor, John Pafford.

History and Evolution of American Police (266)

During this course you will become acquainted with the history of policing in America and learn how the police system evolved from English law enforcement to the policestyle we are familiar with today. The development of police reform and professionalism will be discussed with an introduction to how police departments are organized and managed in order to carry out law enforcement functions. There will be a focus on police discretion and methods used to enforce laws. The class will be led by Zane Rybkowski, an SVSU adjunct criminal justice instructor and OLLI member. He was a police officer for 29 years.

American Women and the Great War (269)

On the centennial anniversary of the First World War, it is valuable to reflect back on a period that created so much upheaval around the world. For American women, WWI provided interesting challenges and new opportunities for engagement on both the national and international stage. This course will discuss the role women played in the peace movement during the early years of WWI, the types of work women engaged with during the war, and how the fight for women’s suffrage saw increased attention and relevance in the context of the Great War. We will also see that American women’s experiences during WWI were as much a reflection of traditional attitudes towards women as they were about opening up new doors and opportunities. The class will be led by SVSU adjunct history instructor, Kathleen McGuire. Thursdays: February 11, 18 & 25 • 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Price: $23 Members; $46 Non-Members Room: C129

Shaking Hands and Kissing Babies: America’s Historic Campaigns and Elections (270) “Pigasus for President” could be heard amongst the crowd in Chicago in 1968, but what did it mean? Join historian Dr. Katherine Ellison, adjunct history professor at SVSU and managing director of History Geek Consulting, for an insider’s look at historic elections. Election season brings with it a tidal wave of political advertising, slogans, television spots, and speeches that most Americans are all too willing to see disappear after November, but have you ever wondered how some of America’s best and worst candidates made it all the way to the White House? This class will focus on the American presidential election cycle, centering on historic campaigns, conventions, and elections from George Washington to Barack Obama. An examination of the art of politicking as seen through campaign strategies, slogans, advertising, and media manipulation will lead to discussion on both exceptional and disgraceful election cycles. Finally, this course will illustrate how strong third party candidates might alter an election result. Great Battles (271)

This class will take an in-depth look at a number of important WWII conflicts. We will look at the leaders, the battles themselves, the outcomes of the conflicts, and the results of each on history. We may also look at the “what if,” of the battles on history. The first series we will cover are from World War II: the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Battle of Midway, the D-Day Invasion, and the Battle of the Bulge. OLLI member and retired school teacher Jim Reha will lead the class. Mondays: February 15, 22, 29 & March 7 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C129

Wicked Bay City (272)

Tim Younkman, retired Bay City Times crime reporter, is back with more interesting local murder stories. This class will delve into Hell’s Half Mile and offer a more in-depth look at that entire Bay City district. He’ll consider what was there, who was there, and interestingly what went on there, including a horrendous murder. He will also share the story of “The Murdering Mogul,” a well-todo Bay City publisher caught in a dual life that led to the death of a young woman. Another story involves the abuses of child labor nationally and locally, including the death of an 11-year-old who was working on the construction of City Hall. There is also the story of a man named Newkirk, alias Thayer, who embezzled thousands from a local bank and fled with his wife to Los Angeles; Bay City’s police chief chased them down on horseback before they could reach the Mexican border. Pretty wicked, eh? Tuesdays: February 23, March 1 & 8 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Price: $23 Members; $46 Non-Members Room: C129

Best of Behind Closed Doors (274)

The GOP has held control of the Michigan Legislature since 2010, President Obama can’t run for re-election and there are major issues being debated in both Washington DC and Lansing. Major changes will take place in 2016, but what will they be? How might they affect you? This class will talk about the major legislation that has been signed into law in 2015, possible actions during the 2016 legislative session, and will begin discussions about the 2016 election. OLLI members and current SVSU students will have the chance to discuss each topic during the class. The class will be led by SVSU Director of Governmental Affairs, John Kaczynski.

Issues in the News (277)

The Rise of the Corporate State: The Demise of the Nation-State (279)

This class will discuss various issues currently in the news. There will be two topics discussed in each of the four class periods. A 15-20 minute video from TED.com will present one speaker’s view of the issue. Each talk will be followed by class discussion of that topic. TED talks don’t just present a summary of events and their causes. They tend to focus on innovative ideas and broad issues. The last 15-30 minutes of each class will be reserved for open discussion of any current issues that the class members wish to discuss. Exact topics and talks haven’t been chosen, but past topics have included income inequality, law enforcement issues, problems with the political system in the U.S., and assorted global issues. The class will be moderated by OLLI member Carol Gohm.

Twenty-five years ago, Harvard professor David Korten warned us about the rise of corporate power which one day might rival governmental power in his book When Corporations Rule the World. The predictions made by Korten have proven quite accurate. This course will combine an analysis of the declining of the nation-state (a condition we have been witnessing for two decades) with an analysis of what may well replace it ... the multi-national corporate entity. Nations are less capable of governance in the emerging world while corporate power, accountable and loyal to no one, has never been stronger. We will draw upon the recently released and updated 25th anniversary of the seminal work of Dr. Korten. The class will be led by Jim Johnson, an adjunct political science professor and attorney.

World and United States Political Update (278)

It is once again time for our recurring course, World Political Update. In this course we will analyze recently trending developments such as ISIL, the disturbing behavior of Russia in Syria, the collapse of Iraq, and the explosion of violence in Jerusalem and the West Bank which may portend the Third Intifada, as well as other issues which continue to destabilize world order. Given the timing of this course, we will also review the foreign policy positions of the major presidential candidates to become cognizant of how they would handle foreign relations. The class will be led by Jim Johnson, an adjunct political science professor and attorney.
