Dear Parents and Guardians: Thanks to a supportive community, highly qualified, committed teachers, dedicated staff, and engaged parents, Erie’s neighborhood schools are more robust and academically rigorous than ever. In this brochure, you will learn about each of Erie’s five neighborhood schools, their outstanding instructional focus programs and additional resources in career technical training and online learning available to our students. You will also learn about numerous state and national recognitions received by Erie schools and the growing number of corporate grants and partnerships that are further enriching our student’s learning experience. Erie’s schools also have the distinction of offering a Mandarin Chinese language program at each of its primary and secondary schools.

Since the passage of the 2008 capital Superintendent of Schools improvement bond, St. Vrain has built Erie’s newest neighborhood school, Red Hawk Elementary, and renovated Erie Elementary and Erie Middle Schools. All St. Vrain neighborhood schools including those in Erie are fully wireless and feature cutting edge technology tools such as laptop carts, overhead projectors, SmartBoards and document cameras. As Superintendent, I am extremely proud of the expanding network of Erie’s high-quality schools and highly engaging instructional programs. Instructional Focus Black Rock’s focus on World Languages and Gifted and Talented (GT) and is unique within the St. Vrain Valley Schools. Students in grades 3-5 receive weekly instruction in Spanish and all students K-5 receive instruction in Mandarin and Chinese culture. For Gifted and Talented students, we offer individualized programming to support student strengths. Using Total School Cluster Grouping, all Black Rock students are grouped by achievement levels. This model facilitates differentiation of curriculum and instruction and increases student achievement.

21st Century Technology The school is furnished with state-of-the-art technology. Every classroom is equipped with interactive white boards, document cameras, a voice amplification system and at least two computers. The school also has a Mac computer lab stocked with an abundance of instructional software.

Preschool We believe strong early childhood programs are the key to success in education. Black Rock offers tuition based preschool experience designed to enhance kindergarten readiness, social experience and enjoyment.

Instructional Focus Red Hawk promotes rigorous instruction in math, science and technology while integrating movement and exercise throughout the day. Creating a sense of environmental responsibility is equally important. Student progress is continually assessed and adjusted as needed. This assures each student is challenged at their level every day.

Pre-Advanced Placement Erie Middle School offers Springboard Pre-AP courses in language arts and math at every grade level to challenge and prepare our students for AP courses offered at Erie High School.

Each grade level has its very own computer lab, while classrooms have access to over 26 Smart Carts equipped with laptop computers. Through SVVSD’s 2013 Learning Technology Plan, every EMS student is issued an iPad Mini complete with instructional programming and academic tools and resources.

Newly Renovated Facilities Renovations to Erie Middle School were completed in the Summer of 2013. The number of classrooms was increased from 20 to 26 and its capacity was increased from 530 to 860 possible students. Our school features state-of-the-art science labs, wireless internet access, LCD projectors in every classroom, and an abundance of natural lighting; amenities conducive to a strong learning environment.

Concurrent Enrollment Juniors and Seniors can earn both high school and college credit for courses taken on the EHS campus. Students can earn up to two full years of college credit while attending EHS. Front Range Community College offers 13 credit hrs. of college each year.

This opportunity is made possible through a partnership with the Confucious Institute. The goal for elementary students is to develop an understanding of Chinese culture combined with converstaional Chinese. Skills are developed at the elementary level to create a strong foundation. Once students reach the middle and high school level Chinese instruction becomes more formalized.

• CDC programs provide job skills, while requiring students to maintain specific, rigorous academic standards • Career related training in language, math and science, along with experiential educational opportunities, provide students with necessary entry-level skills for employment or post-secondary options • Expose students to the latest technology and hands-on experiences in laboratory and real-world environments • To ensure the integrity of each program, the school’s focus is to coordinate programs with the post-secondary/ community college system. CDC also assists students in job placement and cooperative work experience • Any high school student from St. Vrain Valley Schools may attend the Career Development Center • Transportation is provided to and from each home high school and CDC
